Rock icon Gregg Allman dies at 69

Music legend Gregg Allman has died at the age of 69 due to liver cancer complications.

The founding member of the Allman Brothers Band overcame tragedy, drug addiction and health issues to become a rock icon.

Allman passed away at his home in Savannah, Georgia, "surrounded by his family and friends," Michael Lehman, Allman's longtime manager and close friend, told CNN.

His official website read: "It is with deep sadness that we announce that Gregg Allman, a founding member of The Allman Brothers Band, passed away peacefully at his home in Savannah, Georgia.”

Allman played his last concert in October last year. At the time, he said health problems had forced him to cancel the rest of his 2016 shows and 2017 tours. He announced on August 5 that he was "under his doctor's care at the Mayo Clinic" due to "serious health issues."

Music icons have been quick to pay tribute to the legend.

Cher, whom Allman was briefly to in the 1970s, wrote, “I've tried ... words are impossible.”

Beatles drummer Ringo Starr tweeted: “Rest in peace Greg Allman peace and love to all the family.”

Our thoughts are with his family and friends.
