5 phone charging myths debunked
If you want to make the most of your smartphone battery, it’s important to know which advice is fact and which is fiction when it comes to charging it up.
Myth 1: You should only use the same brand of charger as your phone
You can get off-brand chargers, and while they don’t work quite as well as the brand name charger, they are still fine. The ones to avoid are the cheap knockoffs from discount stores. Not only do these sometimes not work at all, they can cause issues with your battery.
Myth 2: You shouldn't talk on your phone when it’s charging
In fact, so long as you aren’t using a cheap and nasty knockoff charger you can use it however you like. Some people have said that your phone can explode or electrocute you, but if you are using a charger and battery that is approved by the manufacturer you can rest easy.
Myth 3: Don’t charge your phone all night
Luckily the smartphone is smart – once it is at 100 per cent battery life it knows to stop charging. In fact the battery isn’t even in use you’re your phone is fully charged. However it’s not ideal to do this every night, in fact it’s been found that you can extend the life of your battery if you keep your phone charged to between 40 per cent and 80 per cent.
Myth 4: There’s no need to ever turn your phone off
Even machines need to take a break, and to maximise the life of your battery it’s a good idea to turn your phone off at least once a week.
Myth 5: Don't recharge your phone until the battery is completely dead
It’s better for your battery to be charged each day than to have it charge up from zero per cent on a regular basis. When the battery often gets down to 0% it can cause it to become unstable. Each battery has a limited amount of charge cycles, so don’t let it die too often and this will keep it in good shape.
