How exercise can impact your mood

We all know a bit of exercise every now and then can make you healthier. But science is also showing us that it’s a great way to make you happier as well.

We’re going to take a look at the significant ways exercise can impact your mood and get you on the right track to a healthier, happier life. Once you have a look at the benefits you’ll see there’s no reason not to go on that jog every now and then.

1. Helps boost production of the feel good chemicals

Exercise helps increase the levels of endorphins and serotonin in your body, which can lead to a more positive outlook and brighter perspective on things.

2. Helps distract you from anxious thoughts

Exercise requires you to focus on the job at hand (walking, swimming, running) giving you some much-needed relief from whatever’s bothering you.

3. Helps improve your sleep levels

Lack of sleep is a key contributor to stress which can increase the risk of suffering from depression. Regular exercise makes it easier to get a bit of shut eye.

4. Helps achieve a higher self-esteem

Regular activity is an investment in your mind, body and soul and when it becomes a regular habit will have you feeling stronger than you’ve ever been. Even just by showing up and meeting small exercise goals, you’ll get a valuable sense of achievement.

5. Increased levels of concentration

The same endorphins that are improving your mood can also help you concentrate and feel mentally sharper, with the added bonus of stimulating growth of new brain cells.

6. A better resilience

When faced with mental and emotional challenges in life often we turn to unhealthy coping mechanisms like alcohol, drugs and other types of negative behaviour. Exercise is a positive way to deal with problems and blow off some steam.

What do you think of our list? Are you a regular exerciser, and if so what’s your favourite type of exercise? Share your thoughts in the comments.
