6 tips to survive divorce after 60

It’s unfortunate, but people do change and divorce after 60 is something a lot of us will have to deal with. In the emotions that come with the situation your financial affairs are probably the last thing you’re thinking about, but you need to protect your assets.

We’re going to take a look at six things you must do to survive divorce after 60. These measures will help numb the sting, as you start to put your life back together.

1. Contact your bank

If have a joint account then there’s a risk your now ex-partner could make off with your money. Contact your bank and they can recommend how to structure the account. It may be necessary to freeze funds or implement a joint signature withdrawal process.

2. Update your will

Don’t wait a moment to update your will, especially if your ex-partner is named as a beneficiary. If you don’t have a will drawn up, now’s the time to do so.

3. Take care of any outlying debts

It’s also a good opportunity to see if you can clear the slate financially. You have a responsibility for any joint debts in your name, any if your ex-partner stops paying it could affect your credit rating. Try to resolve this as amicably as possible.

4. Cancel any joint credit cards

The same is true for any joint credit cards that are in both of your names. As with the above measure, you need to figure out how you’ll clear any outstanding debt.

5. Protect your assets

It’s vital too, to protect the things you own. If your ex-partner is not being cooperative, it may be necessary to apply for a court order to prevent them from selling assets.

6. Get back out there

After going through this experience you’re well within your rights to feel down in the dumps, but as they safe life does go on. Try to keep your mind off things by taking up a new hobby, booking a holiday or doing something you’ve never done before.
