New lead in Madeleine McCann case: looking for "woman in purple"

Police investigating the disappearance of Madeleine McCann are in Bulgaria trying to find a female waitress they hope can lead them to an unidentified "woman in purple".

The "woman in purple" is a potential person of interest as she was spotted near apartment 5A, the McCann holiday flat in Portugal, the night Madeleine vanished in 2007, The Sun reports.

The waitress is believed to have worked at the Tapas bar where Madeleine’s parents dined with friends before returning to find their daughter had vanished from the apartment in Portugal’s Algarve.

A British woman claimed to have observed the "woman in purple" standing alone and close to apartment 5A.

"I don't know who she was but she caught my eye because she was dressed in purple-plum clothes," Jenny Murat said.

"It struck me as strange because it's so unusual for anyone, particularly a woman, to be standing alone on the street in our resort."

At the end of September it was announced that the investigation into Madeleine’s disappearance, codename Operation Grange, would be getting a NZD$226,000 funding boost.

More than £11 million (NZD$21 million) has been spent on the search for the child, who vanished when she was just three years old.
