5 tips to find a good charity to help out

There are so many charities and causes to support nowadays that it can be difficult to figure out which one is most deserving of your attention. So we’ve put together a handy guide to choosing a charity, which makes sure your time and money is being used in the best way possible.

Research before you give

If you really want to know where your money is going, make sure you do a little bit of research and figure out how much of each of your dollars will actually make it through to the cause you’re supporting. Remember, every organisation has overheads that need to be covered.

Consider local charities and causes

Charity starts at home, as they say, and if you aim to give locally you can really see the effect your donation is having on your community. Smaller, community-based organisations can often use their resources more effectively and are often in more need of contributions than bigger ones.

Ask for the charity’s annual report

It’s worth looking at the annual report each charity puts out and examining it carefully. Not just looking at the figures, but trying to get a sense of what the business is and what it’s going for. Does it have a sense of mission, bravery and boldness or does it seem cautious and formulaic?

Does it have ways you can get personally involved?

If you’re just giving a sum at the end of each month then there’s probably going to be a sense of disconnect with what you’re giving and the sense of accomplishment you have upon achieving it. By choosing a charity where you can get personally involved you’ll feel a bigger part of the picture.

Watch out for any red flags

While most charities have the best interest of their causes at heart, not every charity is working as ethically as you would like. Reporting and accounting for charities can be incomplete, and suspicious activity can be hidden, so make sure you’re wary of the charity’s activities.
