How to allergy-proof your home

If you or those close to you suffer from allergies, you’ll know that the home can be a minefield for mould and dust. Follow Mayo Clinic’s simple steps to allergy-proof your home, stat!

Tip 1: Wash bedding in hot water

Keep all bedding material like pillows and mattresses in washable cases. Be sure to wash fabric in a hot machine cycle once a week- water temperature should be at least 54 degrees Celcius.

Tip 2: Avoid upholstered furniture

Opt for furniture with an easy-to-clean cover and avoid upholstered furniture with a fixed casing. A high-temperature steam mop is a great way to clean furniture.

Tip 3: Use air filtration

Choose an air filter that has a small-particle filter. If you suffer from allergies at night, try to adjust the filter so that it directs clean air towards your head as you sleep.

Tip 4: Move plants outdoors

The soil in potted indoor plants is a haven for mould. Either move pot plants outside or spread aquarium gravel over the dirt to help contain mould.

Tip 5: Use a gas fireplace

Wood-burning fireplaces or gas stoves can worsen respiratory allergies. Opt for a natural gas fireplace instead, as most won’t cause this problem.

Tip 6: Replace rubber fridge seals

Have regular fridge clean-out dates and be sure to replace any mouldy rubber seals around the fridge door.
