How to start running at any age
Running may not be the easiest of exercises, but it can also be one of the most rewarding. As we know it can be daunting to start if you don’t know where to begin, we spoke to Australian-based fitness instructor Sam Wood for his top tips on how to get started on your trail-blazing journey.
“If done properly running can be a great choice of activity for the over 60's,” Sam shared with us.
“Running keeps excess body fat to a minimum, is sensational for sustaining healthy bone density, and of course is perfect for your heart and lungs.”
“The key for older runners is to listen to your body, minimise impact where possible, and allow proper low impact recovery sessions between runs.”
In order for you to get the most out of your exercise experience, Sam has provided us with three tips to keep in mind while you ease into running.
- Listen to your body: “Running is great for bone density but it can put load on your joints. If you are sore, opt for a low impact cycle or swim between runs to aid blood flow and recovery without adding pressure to vulnerable joints.”
- Choose the right shoe: “Wear a runner with good support and cushioning and change regularly. Your runner shouldn't be older than you are. Again – look after those joints.”
- Be mindful of your terrain: “Run on grass or walk on soft sand to still get a great workout without having to pound the pavement.”
