Man insists fiancée isn’t pregnant moments before baby is born
A man who called emergency services because his fiancée was suffering severe stomach cramp had no idea he was about to become a dad.
Gareth Williams, from Pontnewynydd in South Wales, called for an ambulance when his partner Rhiannon Oldham experience extreme pain.
The couple had no idea Oldham was pregnant. Instead, they had simply assumed she had gained a bit of weight over the Christmas holidays.
When speaking to emergency service, Williams described how a “large lump” seemed to be coming out of her.
“She’s in a lot of pain, it’s like she’s trying to give birth to something but she’s not pregnant,” Williams told operator Chelsie Holbrook.
“She’s actually got this large lump coming out, it’s just coming out. She’s not pregnant.”
But a few moment later, William had to concede what was going on.
“Oh no. No, she’s actually giving birth,” Williams said.
“What do I do? The baby is crying and moving and everything.”
A midwife was sent to the couple’s home, but their son had already arrived safely, weighing around 2.2kg.
Holbrook told Wales Online this birth was one of the most dramatic she’d encountered as a emergency operator.
“The alarm bells started to ring for me when Gareth said that Rhiannon had a large lump and before we knew it she had actually given birth,” she said.
“The adrenaline was well and truly pumping at that point.
“I’ve delivered five babies in my time as a call handler and this one’s definitely up there in terms of the most dramatic.”
Despite the baby’s unexpected arrival, the couple told ITV News they were “over the moon” to suddenly become parents.
“It was a huge shock because we had absolutely no idea that she was pregnant,” Mr Williams told the news program.
“The last couple of weeks have been a blur,” Ms Oldham added.
“One minute we were planning for a wedding — now we’re planning for a nursery.”
