Why squinting helps you see better
If you ever had trouble with your eyesight you might have found yourself squinting in order to see something more clearly. Why do we do this though? And why does squinting work?
The short answer: squinting changes the shape of your eye, allowing light to be focused better, and thus helping things appear more clearly.
The long answer? We’ll let the expert Craig Benzine from Mental Floss explain the details of how the eyes changes shape above. It really is quite incredible when you think about it!
Interestingly, Benzine debunks the popular belief that squinting damages vision.
“It might give you a headache, but that’s because of the muscle contraction in your face,” he explains.
