5 natural remedies for a peaceful night's sleep

We all know how important a good, restful night sleep is for our health and wellbeing. Unfortunately, it can sometimes be tricky to nod off. Stress in our daily lives, too much caffeine, an overly indulgent dinner or too much pre-bed screen time can all impact our ability to fall, and stay, asleep. Fortunately, there are a number of natural solutions you can employ to help promote a snuggly slumber.

  1. Chamomile – Chamomile flowers have long been purported to have sleep inducing benefits. Sipping a cup of chamomile tea of an evening if the perfect pre-bed sleep ritual. Not only is the herb itself slumber inducing but research has found that warm beverages can assist in the soothing and unwinding process.
  2. Valerian – Another herb that’s slightly less well known than chamomile, valerian tea or tablets can help promote a deep sleep. Not to be confused with the similar sounding Valium, valerian is a naturally occurring substance that most people can use without issue. If you’re currently taking medication, make sure you discuss any interaction possibilities with your doctor or pharmacist.
  3. Vitamin D – Whether it’s the naturally occurring variety from the sun, or stuff you take in tablet form, adequate levels of vitamin D are essential for good sleep. Make sure you get enough unfiltered sunlight during the day and if you’re worried about your levels, speak to your doctor. If you need to take a supplement, make sure you take it of a morning to promote good night time sleep.
  4. Bananas – If you’re looking for something to pair with your cup of chamomile, try a banana. Our favourite yellow fruit contains tryptophan and potassium both of which are muscle relaxants.
  5. Asoothing soak – A warm bath is one of the best ways to relax the body and induce a sleepy state. When our body goes from cool to warm and back to cool, we often begin to feel tired. Up the relaxation levels by adding a scoop of Epsom salts and a few drops of lavender essential oil for a fragrant, soothing soak.
