5 questions to ask before you change your hair
We all get stuck in a rut with our hair. What worked 10, 20 or even 30 years ago might no longer be what makes you look, and more importantly, feel your best. Fear not, these five tips will help you make a change you love.
Embrace change
You’ve decided to take the plunge and make a change, so actually do it! You’re probably not even wearing the same clothes, so why have the same hair? Don’t fool yourself into thinking a trim will change the way you feel. The bigger the change the better.
Is it too long?
Hair past the shoulders is a tough look for a sophisticated woman. Some call the effect “1661”, because a sixteen-year-old can look like a teenager from behind. A cut that grazes the collar and has face-framing layers draws attention away from an aging neck but lends itself to a classier look.
Or is it too short?
There is no rule when it comes to how short your hair can be. Just keep in mind that the end point of the cut emphasises the facial feature next to it. So if you're concerned about a sagging jawline, don't ask for a chin-length bob. What’s your favourite facial feature? Just don’t make the mistake of thinking that short hair is easy, because in many cases it can be harder to style than a longer mane.
Do you have a fringe?
Rather than an entire style over-haul, consider simply changing up the front. Fringes and bangs can camouflage lines on the forehead but different styles have different effects. The most flattering cut is usually a side swept fringe with layers that blends into the rest of your hair. Already have them but you’re getting over them? Consider how you might look with a front fringe or nothing at all.
How are you feeling about the colour?
It’s a tough decision whether or not you can embrace grey hair. Before ditching the dye, determine if grey will be flattering. "When a brunette turns grey, it looks silvery and pretty. But blondes tend to go white, which can make them look pale. Additionally, make sure you invest in some quality smoothing serums if your hair isn’t in the best condition. Grey hair is usually wiry and frizzy but smooth strands make the colour look vibrant.
