5 expert tips for summer skincare
Summer’s scorching sun and hot humidity can wreak havoc on our skin but not if you follow these top tips.
1. Slather on the sunscreen
It should go without saying but sunscreen is your skins best defence against the sun. David Khoo, Olay skincare scientist, says: “UV damage alone is responsible for up to 80 per cent of how our skin looks as we age”. So keep your skin well protected with regular applications of sunscreen.
2. Introduce an exfoliating cleanser
If you don’t have an exfoliator in your beauty routine, summer is the time to start. As Mr Khoo explains, “Introducing an exfoliating cleanser into your routine will help remove dead skin cells to reveal smoother, brighter skin.” Stick to a gentle exfoliator though as you don’t want to strip your skin either.
3. Don’t skip the moisturiser
Moisturiser in summer can make your skin feel greasy, but it’s actually important to keep skin well-hydrated in the heat. The key is to look for a lightweight formula that doesn’t feel heavy on your face. Mr Khoo says to look for ingredients like hyaluronic acid in your moisturisers, which are both hydrating and lightweight.
4. Keep well hydrated
As our bodies sweat much more in summer, it’s important to keep well hydrated. Drink plenty of water and indulge in water-rich foods like watermelon – it’s 91 per cent water!
5. Soothe sunburns
You forgot the sunscreen or didn’t apply enough and disaster, you’re burnt. Unfortunately the damage is done but you can reduce the redness and prevent peeling with cool compresses or cooling gels.
