When Camilla met . . . Camilla!

Duchess Camilla had an interesting guest attend the reception held at Clarence House to mark International Women’s Day - the woman who plays her on The Crown.

Emerald Fennell, who portrayed a younger, fictional version of the Duchess of Cornwall on the Netflix series between 2019 and 2020, was seen chatting and laughing with Camilla at the London event.

“It was particularly nice to meet her today on International Women’s Day because, you know, she does so much for so many, particularly female charities,” Fennell told journalist Georgie Prodromou of her meeting with the Duchess.

The actress joked: “I was nervous I might be thrown in the Tower - but so far, so good.”

Fennell also praised Camilla’s ability to deal with fame and pressure over the years.

“She’s been in the spotlight for a long time and has always weathered it with grace,” she said.

The Duchess also shared a few jokes of her own during her speech to the women in attendance.

“For me, it’s very reassuring that if I should fall off my perch at any moment, my fictional alter ego is here to take over,” she joked to laughter from the audience.

“So Emerald - be prepared!”

The event also saw Inna Prystaiko, the wife to the Ukrainian ambassador to the UK, give a moving speech about the experience of women during the Russian invasion.

“Today there are no smiles and no peace, just horror and sorrow in the eyes of every Ukrainian woman, mother and wife,” she said while fighting back tears.

“Now we have to count the death toll of our people and watch their frightened, crying children who are forced to flee their native land with their mothers and sisters, leaving their fathers to defend our country.”

Camilla isn’t the first to share her opinion on the hugely popular series, with Prince Harry previously admitting it gave viewers a “rough idea” of the pressures that come with royal life.

“They don’t pretend to be news. It’s fiction … But it’s loosely based on the truth,” he said.

“It gives you a rough idea about what that lifestyle, what the pressures of putting duty and service above family and everything else, what can come from that.”
