It may have been Father’s Day around the country on the weekend, but it was a bittersweet day for the Irwin family, marking the 16th anniversary of the passing of beloved icon Steve Irwin on September 4, 2006.
In a heart-warming tribute shared on Instagram, 24-year-old Bindi Irwin remembered her wildlife warrior dad who would’ve been 60 years old this year.
"Grandpa Crocodile, I know you would've been the most incredible grandfather because you were such an extraordinary dad," Bindi wrote alongside a throwback photo of herself and her late father.
"Thank you for being an amazing guardian angel for Grace," she added, referring to her 17-month-old daughter.
Robert Irwin, Bindi’s brother, also paid tribute to his late dad, sharing a photo of the pair together when he was just a baby.
"It's Father's Day today in Australia, and I am sending my love to those who are missing their dad today," the 18-year-old captioned the photo. "I cherish all the good times with my dad and feel grateful to be able to keep his memory and legacy alive ❤️.
Terri Irwin took to Twitter, explaining alongside his many achievements, his biggest was his children.
"The part of Steve's life that he loved the most was being a dad. He would be so very proud," she tweeted of her two children.
The Irwin family have had a huge year announcing a brand new luxurious wildlife experience at Australia Zoo. It also marks what would’ve been Steve and Terri’s 30th wedding anniversary.
