10 clever tips to keep produce fresher, longer

No one likes spending money on fresh produce only to have it go off before you can use it. With these tips, avoid that problem by keeping your food fresher for longer.

1. Wrap the stem of your banana bunch to keep them from ripening as quickly.

2. Put an apple in your bag of potatoes to stop them from sprouting.

3. Line your vegetable crisper with paper towel to absorb excess moisture and prevent sogginess.

4. Keep apples, which contain ethylene gas, away from other fruit to help the rest keep longer.

5. Prevent strawberry mould by washing them in water and vinegar, one part vinegar to three parts water.

6. If you don’t live in a very hot climate, don’t refrigerate your tomatoes to keep their flavour and texture ideal.

7. Store mushrooms in a paper bag to prevent sliminess.

8. Bring new life to limp lettuce by soaking it in ice water.

9. If you only need a bit of lemon juice, skewer a hole into the lemon and squeeze out the juice to avoid prematurely dry lemons.

10. Prolong the life of asparagus by keeping the ends in cold water.
