5 things you didn’t know you could do with lemons

Ah, the humble lemon. So fragrant in cooking, and refreshing in beverages – it holds a special place in our hearts. But did you know that lemons have uses beyond the edible? It’s true. Let’s take a closer look at just how remarkable this citrus is with five things you can do with lemons around your home.

Safe stain remover for linens

If you have a stain in a delicate fabric, lemon is a great way to get rid of it. Make up a mixture of lemon juice and salt to treat the stain. Let this sit on the stain for 30 minutes, and then rinse away using vinegar and warm water.

Shine up the brass

If you’ve got brass that’s tarnished, sprinkle a little salt on top, then rub lightly with a lemon juice-dampened sponge. Rinse the brass with water and dry thoroughly.

De-stain cutting boards

Cut a lemon in half and rub the cut side over your cutting board or butcher’s block to get rid of any stains of lingering smells. For stubborn stains, sprinkle the board with a little salt or bicarb soda first. You can leave the lemon juice on the board overnight before rinsing with water. If your board is wooden, wipe it down with a mineral oil to seal it afterwards.

Shiny chrome

Chrome can lose its shine over time, but it’s nothing a trusty lemon can’t fix. Rub the cut side of a lemon over taps, drains, and pipes to remove mineral deposits that are dulling your chrome’s sparkle. Make sure to rinse and dry thoroughly afterwards.

Kill pesky weeds

Use a little lemon juice to banish offensive weeds from your pristine garden. Just spray a little lemon juice on the weeds, but be careful with your aim – the lemon’s acidity could damage or even kill your flowers and other bushes.
