Adorable couple in their 90s celebrate 76 years together
At a time when around half of all marriages end in divorce, it’s incredibly heartening to learn there is still true love out there. Stan and Nancy Nicholls, both 91 years old, have just celebrated 76 years together – 70 of those married – and their story is what many of us aspire to.
They first met back in 1941 at a dance. “This friend of mine said he knew this girl who liked a bit of fun, and he’ll bring her if I’ll bring my sister, ‘cause he’d like to meet my sister,” Stan told The Project.
That girl turned out to be Nancy, and after dancing all night, they quickly realised there was something special between them. “We stuck together evermore after that.”
Nancy even admits she “fell [in love] straight away,” without even realising. “He was so funny, full of jokes, and a very nice person.”
But it wasn’t always smooth sailing for the couple. Stan was conscripted into the Navy during WWII, in the very early days of their relationship, and their romance was put on hold after he told Nancy not to wait for him. However, when he returned home, she immediately broke up with her boyfriend and reunited with Stan. Soon after, they were engaged.
At first, Nancy’s mother wasn’t thrilled about her daughter’s engagement to a “common sailor,” but soon came around. “Years later we heard about what a wonderful husband and wonderful he was with his children,” Nancy explained. “She didn’t tell me, but she told all her friends, so in the end she’d found out he was okay.”
Nowadays, the great-grandparents are just as in love as ever, living happily ever after in the Gold Coast.
