5 things to do on the Gold Coast
It’s our original beach holiday destination and the Gold Coast still has plenty to offer for fun in the sun.
1. Hit the beaches
It’s not called the Gold Coast for nothing. Your first order of business should be to get yourself down to one of the beautiful gold sand beaches along the region’s 57 kilometres of coastline. You can take it easy and relax in the sun, or try some more adventurous pursuits like surfing, stand up paddleboarding or kayaking. There are plenty of operators offering lessons if you want to learn.
2. Meet the natives
The waters off southeast Queensland are some of the best in the world for spotting humpback whales. Up to 20,000 of these majestic creatures make their way past the coast from June to October during their annual migration. Take a cruise to spot one of these gentle giants at play – if you’re lucky they’ll pop up right beside the boat. If you fancy something a little fluffier, head to the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary to cuddle a koala or hand feed a kangaroo.
3. Spills and thrills
You’re never too old to get your heart racing on a good old-fashioned roller coaster or waterslide. There are four huge theme parks on the Gold Coast – Dreamworld, Seaworld, Warner Bros. Movie World and Wet’n’Wild. We’ll warn you, it's a huge day, though there are also plenty of more tame activities and shows to enjoy while sitting down. Pace yourself and have a blast.
4. Into the jungle
The Gold Coast is most famous for its beaches, but inland the lush landscapes are just as impressive. The World Heritage listed Lamington and Springbrook National Parks are some of the most diverse and valuable areas of rainforest in the world. Extensive walking tracks run throughout the parks, winding through ancient trees, rocky escarpments and powerful waterfalls. Keep an eye out for pademelons, small rainforest wallabies.
5. Enjoy some R&R
Whatever your definition of “down time”, you’ll probably find it on the Gold Coast. Book a tee time at any one of half a dozen world class golf courses scattered around the region. Settle in for an afternoon in the spa, many of which are attached to five-star resorts. Or hit one of the local designer boutiques, art and crafts markets or big name shopping malls for a little retail therapy.
