Airline using cooking oil to fuel flights

Singapore Airlines has launched the world’s first “green package” flights in an attempt to reduce international aviation emissions.

The green package flights will be powered by sustainable biofuel which has been produced from used cooking oil.

Over the next three months, the sustainable biofuel will be mixed with the usual jet fuel in a series of 12 flights on the Airbus A350-900.

The airline has described the Airbus A350-900 as their “most fuel-efficient aircraft” in a press release.

The first flight using the sustainable fuel on the SQ31, arrived in Singapore from San Francisco with 206 passengers after a 17-hour flight.

Singapore Airline’s chief executive officer hopes the green package flights with fuel-efficient aircrafts and optimised flight operations, will reduce the company’s carbo emissions.

Singapore Airlines chief executive officer Goh Choon Phong said, “We now want to push ourselves further and are embarking on this initiative to help promote the use of sustainable biofuel in an operationally and commercially viable manner.”

The biofuel-powered flights are in collaboration with the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore. Which will offer efficient flight operations such as rerouting a flight’s lateral profile by looking at weather forecasts to save fuel.
