Where’s the best place to get coffee in Australia?
Australians take their coffee very seriously and they’re proud that they make some of the best in the world. Here’s where to find it.
1. Boatero Roastery & Café, Maclean
The tiny town of Maclean on the Clarence River in New South Wales has a population of just 2,600, yet serves up arguably the best coffee in the country. You can have your standard latte or cappuccino, or you can try a trendy single origin filter coffee served in an of-the-minute glass pot. Plus they roast their own beans on site.
2. Coffee Anthology, Brisbane
This industrial chic café next to Brisbane’s Botanical Gardens was just named Australia’s best café by ratings website Beanhunter. There’s a daily rotating menu of different coffee beans brought in from roasters around the country so regular customers can taste something different every day. Have your coffee with a delicious Nutella tart.
3. Single Origin Roasters, Sydney
This Surry Hills institution has been open for more than 13 years and is still one of the coolest coffee spots in the Sydney. It’s a tiny little café with a focus on single origin coffee (obviously), espresso, filter and special house-crafted blends. There’s also a good chance you’ll bump into a local celebrity, stopping by for their morning caffeine fix.
4. Epic Espresso, Perth
This is more than just a coffee shop. There’s a barista school attached to the café, so you can guarantee that you’ll get a perfect flat white or machiatto every time. The staff are friendly, the coffee is fantastic and the only real downside is that there’s almost always a huge line.
5. Proud Mary, Melbourne
At least three baristas are on duty at any one time at the buzzing café in the back streets of Collingwood. The coffee itself is roasted at the café’s own roasting house around the corner and served up here in espresso, cold drip or brewed through a number of fancy presses. Even the café staple of avocado on toast is extra special here with the innovative addition of crunchy sprouts.
6. Please Say Please, Adelaide
A tiny space that sits somewhere between hole in the wall and café, Please Say Please uses coffee from Melbourne’s Proud Mary – owner Daniel Freer thinks they make the best beans in the country. The staff are ridiculously knowledgeable and will be able to recommend exactly the drink you’re after, even if you don’t know it yourself.
