1. Japan

Of course, there’s never a bad time to visit the modern-yet-ancient Japan. But 2016 may well be one of the best years to plan a trip to the land of the rising sun. The country will soon be busy planning for Tokyo’s successful bid for the 2020 Olympics, so get in now before it gets too crowded.

2. USA

Maybe our Aussie dollar isn’t stacking up quite as well against the greenback as it did in previous years, but that doesn’t make the US any less of a fantastic location this year. 2016 marks 100 years of America’s National Park Service so it’s the perfect time to visit Yosemite, Yellowstone or Badlands.

3. Fiji

With an upgrade to the country’s Nadi International Airport well in the works there’s never been easier to access the island paradise that is Fiji. Dive your way through the various reefs, try some Kava or simply sit back and relax in your resort and let all of life’s worries pass you by.

4. Uruguay

More like underrated! Sandwiched nicely between Brazil and Argentina, Uruguay offers a passage to South America that is unique as it is exciting. While you’re there you can explore Montevideo, the nation’s vibrant capital, act out a gaucho (cowboy) fantasy, or simply just enjoy the nightlife.

5. Botswana

Named Lonely Planet’s number one country to visit in 2016, Botswana is becoming a very exciting destination for people wishing to explore Africa via a democratic, progressive and enlightened society. Botswana turns 50 in 2016 and is still a jaw-droopingly beautiful country.

6. Cuba

Change is a coming to Cuba, a country that finds itself sitting on the brink of a cultural revolution that will see its individuality forever altered. So don’t wait until it’s gone forever! Book a trip to Cuba in 2016 and experience the individual culture of the land of salsa and cigars, rum and rebellion.

7. Poland

8. Greenland

Greenland may have one of the world’s lowest population densities, but that doesn’t make it any less of a fantastic place to visit, particularly in 2016 that will see the region host the Arctic Winter Games. Travellers can expect to enjoy an extravagant festival of song, food and dance.

9. Palau

If you’re a diver or a snorkeler you simply can’t go past Palau as a destination in 2016. To preserve the regions unique sea life Palau recently turned 100% of its marine territory into a sanctuary in a bid to protect the unique, beautiful natural wildlife. Visit this place next year!

10. Nepal

This is a country that depends heavily on income generated form tourists, with locals still devastated after the earthquake that hit last April. Accommodation is increasingly reopening and there are still things for travellers to do.
