How to eat well and stay active while travelling
After a holiday you might find yourself coming home with extra baggage, and we’re not talking about souvenirs. It’s true that you only live once, but it’s also true that you want to be able to fit into your trousers once the trip is over. Here are five tips for healthier travel.
Because a spare tyre is the last souvenir you want to bring home.
1. When you’re on a plane
Particularly for shorter connections, it’s not the worst idea to have some healthy snack like bananas, apples, nuts or carrots on hand. Not only will this be a way to avoid the unhealthy (and not to mention expensive) dining options at the airport, you’ll also have something nice to munch on when you’re mid-air and won’t have to resort to dreaded peanuts.
2. When you’re on a long road journey
Long road journeys whether they be by car, bus or campervan can be quite enjoyable, but they can also wreak havoc on your diet if you’re only stopping at fast food joints along the way. So if you’ve got a long car ride coming up, make sure you prepack some snacks. It’s also a good idea to get up and stop regularly to stretch your legs every so often.
3. When you’re at the hotel
Many hotels offer reasonable fitness amenities that are worth taking advantage of when you’re on holidays. It’s also worth booking a hotel room with a kitchenette that lets you do your own cooking. Not only will this let you save money on food, it will also allow you to take more control of your own diet so you’re not wasting money on restaurant meals.
4. When you’re on a cruise
This is probably the most difficult one out of them all, but if you’re mindful on a cruise you don’t need to come home with a waistline the size of the iceberg that sunk the Titanic. It’s simply a matter of being smart about your food options, as many lines offer healthy alternatives, avoiding the urge to over-indulge and taking advantage of the fitness amenities at sea.
5. Consider a travel concierge service
If you’ve got mobility issues or any other health concerns, and are worried about eating healthy and staying active while on holidays, a travel concierge service is just the thing. Companies like Medical Travel Companions can provide you with access to a registered nurse for the entire course of your journey which can assist with movement and meal preparation.
