10 ways to save when booking a hotel

It’s strange – the reason we travel is to experience the world, yet somehow we end up spending more money on our accommodation than anything else. And that’s alright, if that’s your thing, but this is money you could be far better spent! Here are 10 tips to help you save money when booking a hotel room. And while they won’t always work, they’re all definitely worth a red hot try.

1. Book the room through the hotel’s website

Hotel compariosn websites are great resources in terms of figuring out which hotel you should stay at, but they might not be advertising the best price available. Simply by double-checking the hotels website you could find a better price (or even discounts offered by the hotel).

2. Have a flexible calendar

If timing isn’t of the essence consider booking your holiday during the quiet season. While this might not be the most optimum time to visit your destination (and this is in and of itself a matter of opinion) you are still getting to visit the same place and you won’t be paying nearly as much.

3. Ask if your hotel has an airport shuttle

Taxis taking you to and from the airport can be a huge drain on your wallet, so when you’re booking check if your hotel offers a free airport shuttle. The money you save could go towards a batter room!

4. Book last minute (if you’re feeling brave!)

This is only one for the adventurous and is probably not a good idea if you’re travelling during peak period but if the hotel is trying to get rid of rooms you can save a lot of money by booking late.

5. Stay in a newer hotel

Many hotels offer introductory offers and discounted rates when they first open before the word has spread about how great they are. Keep your ear to the ground and research any opportunities.

6. Sign up for rewards programs

Some hotels offer rewards programs that can access a bunch of nice perks including free Wi-Fi and spa discounts, but can also see you paying less when you’re booking your next room!

7. Find out what is and isn’t included

When you’re choosing a hotel, it’s a good idea to factor amenities into your budget. Complimentary breakfast saves you having to go out and pools and games rooms offer entertainment.

8. Don’t be afraid to haggle in low seasons

Again this is only something that works during low season but if you’re calling up to book a hotel room a little bit of gentle haggling might go a long way, and may even see some free perks!

9. Avoid room service and the minibar

While these are part of the joys of staying in a hotel, room service and your hotel minibar can rack up the expenses very quickly. Avoid these at all costs and spend more money on your trip.

10. Simply ask for an upgrade

Sometimes in life all you have to do is ask. This is particularly useful if it’s someone’s “birthday” or “anniversary” during your stay, and might just see you be able to access some cool perks!
