Sinéad O'Connor passes away at just 56

Sinéad O'Connor, the exceptionally talented Irish singer-songwriter who skyrocketed to fame in her mid-20s, has tragically passed away at the age of 56.

While she was celebrated for her powerful and emotive music, she was equally known for her personal struggles and provocative actions throughout her life. The news of her death was announced by her family, who requested privacy during this difficult time. The cause of her passing has not been disclosed.

"It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Sinéad. Her family and friends are devastated and have requested privacy at this very difficult time," the singer's family said in a statement.

O'Connor courageously shared her battle with mental illness, revealing that she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. In 2017, she posted a poignant video on Facebook while staying in a New Jersey motel, expressing that she was holding on for the sake of others and admitting her own struggles.

In 2022, she faced immense heartache when her teenage son, Shane, died by suicide. O'Connor's emotional response on Twitter at the time – that there was "no point living without him" – led to her hospitalisation.

From humble beginnings singing on the streets of Dublin, O'Connor rose to international stardom with her debut album "The Lion and the Cobra" in 1987. However, her most iconic hit came in 1990 with her rendition of Prince's "Nothing Compares 2 U," which resonated with audiences worldwide. The accompanying music video, featuring O'Connor's intense close-up, further cemented her status as a sensation.

Despite her undeniable talent, O'Connor's career was often overshadowed by her unconventional nature, outspoken political views, and troubled personal life. She became a vocal critic of the Catholic Church long before sexual abuse allegations surfaced widely. Notably, she caused controversy in 1992 by tearing up a photo of Pope John Paul II during a live appearance on NBC's "Saturday Night Live."

Throughout her career, she engaged in feuds with several prominent figures, including Frank Sinatra and Prince. Her support for the Irish Republican Army and her affiliation with the Latin Tridentine Church also sparked public outcry.

In 2018, O'Connor announced her conversion to Islam, adopting the name Shuhada' Davitt (later changed to Shuhada Sadaqat), while continuing to use her professional name.

Born on December 8, 1966, O'Connor had a challenging childhood marred by alleged abuse from her mother. Despite the hardships, music provided an escape, and she began performing on the streets of Dublin, drawing inspiration from artists like Bob Dylan and Siouxsie and the Banshees.

Her debut album, "The Lion and the Cobra," propelled her to fame, and subsequent albums like "I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got" solidified her reputation as an artist with substance and integrity. O'Connor received multiple Grammy nominations and won in 1991 for best alternative musical performance.

In 2003, she announced her retirement from music, but later returned to the studio to release new material, including the album "I'm Not Bossy, I'm the Boss" in 2014. She remained active in the music industry, even contributing to the theme song of "Outlander" season seven.

Throughout her life, O'Connor experienced several marriages and had four children.

In her passing, Sinéad O'Connor leaves behind a legacy of extraordinary musical talent and a life marked by challenges, triumphs, and the unwavering spirit of an artist who refused to compromise. Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar expressed his condolences, praising her unmatched talent and global impact.

Sinéad O'Connor's extraordinary journey may have come to an end, but her music and influence will undoubtedly endure for generations to come.

Images: Instagram

56 and still got it! Demi Moore strips down for stunning photoshoot

Actress Demi Moore has posed nude for the US October issue of Harper’s Bazaar, only wearing a diamond bracelet and an oversized pink hat.

“Baring all for the October issue of @harpersbazaarus,” Moore, 56, captioned the cover photo.

In the magazine, Moore opens up to interviewer Lena Dunham about her mother and father’s addiction issues, as well as her own.

“The next thing I remember is using my fingers, the small fingers of a child, to dig the pills my mother had tried to swallow out of her mouth while my father held it open and told me what to do,” Moore recalled, according to news.com.au.

“Something very deep inside me shifted then, and it never shifted back. My childhood was over.”

Moore also reflected over her time of being a mother-of-three and revealed that she suffered a miscarriage in 2004 whilst being married to Ashton Kutcher.

The pair were married in 2005, and the couple had planned to call their baby Chaplin Rose.

After the miscarriage, Moore started drinking again and blamed herself.

“In retrospect, what I realised is that when I opened the door [again], it was just giving my power away,” she admitted.

“I guess I would think of it like this: It was really important to me to have natural childbirth because I didn’t want to miss a moment. And with that I experienced pain. So part of being sober is, I don’t want to miss a moment of life, of that texture, even if that means being in — some pain.”

Scroll through the gallery to see Demi Moore's stunning photoshoot with Harper's Bazaar.

Great Barrier Reef valued at $56 billion

A new Deloitte Access Economics report has found the total asset value of the Great Barrier Reef to be $56 billion.

The economists calculated the World Heritage site’s economic, social and iconic brand value to reach the staggering figure.

Many Australians believe the reef is priceless but Deloitte arrived at the figure after a six-month analysis that drew on economic and scientific sources as well as international surveys.

At $29 billion, tourism was found to be the greatest contributor to the overall value. $23.8 billion of the reef’s value came from “indirect or non-use value” which means people who haven’t yet visited the reef but value knowing it exists. $3.2 billion of its value was attributed to recreational users such as weekend divers.

Commissioned by the Great Barrier Reef Foundation, the report found the reef added $6.4 billion of economic value to the Australian economy in 2015-16.

The reef employs 39,000 people directly but there are also 64,000 jobs linked to it nationally. In comparison, National Australia Bank creates 34,000 direct jobs, Telstra 33,000 and Qantas 26,000.

Great Barrier Reef Foundation director Steve Sargent said no other Australian asset contributed as much value to “Brand Australia”.

"At $56 billion, the reef is valued at more than 12 Sydney Opera Houses," he said.

"This report sends a clear message that the Great Barrier Reef – as an ecosystem, as an economic driver, as a global treasure – is too big to fail."

Former US vice-president Al Gore deemed the report as a necessary look at the reef’s value.

"Any failure to protect this indispensable natural resource would have profound impacts not only to Australia but around the world," he said.

Deloitte Access Economics partner and report author John O’Mahony labelled the reef as irreplaceable.

"With the reef under threat, our report is a major step in looking to value nature's significance in monetary terms and using this information to help inform what we do to protect and save important natural assets."

The study used various economic techniques including input-output tables, econometrics, willingness to pay analysis, sensitivity and the Brand Asset Valuator.

In the past two years, two-thirds of the reef have been impacted by unprecedented coral bleaching.

Woman receives late father’s message in a bottle 56 years later

A US woman has been given a message in a bottle written by her father almost six decades earlier.

Paula Pierce, of New Hampshire, was recently contacted by a Utah man, Cliff Buffington, after he found the bottle while on holidays in the Turks and Caicos Islands in the Atlantic Ocean.

"(I found) this coke bottle half buried in the sand – looked like it had been there since the beginning of time,” Cliff told local broadcaster WMUR.

“On the paper, there was something written in pencil – like handwriting. It said, ‘Look inside’.”

Although some of the writing on the note was illegible, Cliff managed to read: "Return to 419 Ocean Blvd. and receive a reward of $150 from Tina, owner of the Beachcomber.”

Paula’s father had penned the message as a joke after purchasing the motel.

Cliff soon learnt that Beachcomber was a reference to the Beachcomber Motel in Hampton, which was purchased by Paula’s parents in 1960.

After getting in touch with Paula, Cliff returned the message by hand. As promised, Paula handed over the reward of US$150 (A$196).

Paula has praised Cliff for not only recognising the importance of the bottle’s message but also his willingness to travel interstate to deliver the item.

“This is special because it brings back a piece of my father, a piece of my mother, a piece of my childhood, a piece of the Beachcomber,” Paula said.

“All of these things are very hard to lose.”

Related links;

Why friendships are important in your 60s

Great conversation starters for any situation

Over60 Catch-ups are a great way to make new friends

Couple relive 60’s road trip in 56-year-old Volkswagen Beetle

When Ivan and Beth Hodge were bitten by the travel bug 56 years ago, they went out and bought a Beetle.

It was 1960 when the newlywed couple, who were living in London at the time, purchased the Volkswagen for £439 ($840), and decided to drive it all the way home to New Zealand.

"We were just adventurous," Ivan said.

"It was what we could afford. The car was perfect for us."

With their possessions strapped to the roof-racks, they set off across Europe, the Middle East, and into the Asian subcontinent, before hopping on a cargo ship in Kolkata, India, bound for Auckland.

For much of the journey, they were travelling into the unknown. Their only form of communication with family back home was through letters, which they collected at post offices in Istanbul, Tehran and Pakistan.

"We weren't up to date with the news because we didn't have a telephone. We didn't really know what the hell was going on in the world," Ivan said.

"We were conscious of communism. We were fearful of it. We really didn't need to be as fearful, but that's the way it had been built up."

Beth added: "I think a lot was based on what we had read or heard, and a lot was unfounded. Really, it was a very easy trip for us."

Thirty-five years later, Ivan and Beth dusted off the Beetle to retrace their original journey, which has been documented in a book, For Love and a Beetle.

This time they had a different perspective of the world, as well as a mobile phone and a laptop.

"Driving into Eastern Turkey was a risky area because there was a war," Ivan said.

"We were warned not to drive at night, in case we broke down and were taken hostage.

"The Embassy said 'don't go', but they always say that, don't they?"

Once again, the trusty old Beetle delivered Ivan and Beth safely home.

Since then there has been no stopping the couple, who are based in Sydney and, now in their 80s, continue to travel regularly.

"Every year we're away somewhere. We just love travelling anywhere," said Beth.

Ivan said: "It's not high-class travel. It's travel with the best available. Modest transport, self-catering - we're not going to fancy restaurants. It's all affordable stuff. Anyone can do it."

The pair are now embarking on one last expedition in the Beetle - a trip around the North Island, before the car will retire at Auckland's Museum of Transport and Technology.

"It was a concern to us what we were going to do with it, but it's lovely to have a good home for it," said Beth.

Ivan said it was the "end of an era" for the car, which has been in their lives almost as long as they have been married.

"The thing about the Beetle is it's been going for so long and it identifies with so many people," he said.

"For many, it's their first car. Many of them have lovely experiences in the Beetle, as we have.

"It's been the third person in our marriage."

Written by Siobhan Davis. Curvy 56-year-old model proves you get better with age

Nicola Griffin, a 56-year-old single mother of two from Nottingham, is making waves in the fashion industry by embracing her all-natural image.

A buxom size 16, the baby boomer just become the latest pin-up for changing beauty standards.

“It’s not all about being 20 and 5’10!" Nicola says. "We are all different ages and sizes and that’s the beauty of it. We’re real women”.

Mature models have been around for some time, with brands such as Celine, American Apparel and J. Crew recently opting for models over 50 years of age. Nicola herself got her start modelling for an English hair brand.

The grey-haird beauty’s bold mission to change perceptions about beauty and age started on a regular day, in line at the bank. A woman from a hair product company asked Griffin, who at the time ran a business organising student exchange trips, if she would be interested modelling for the brand. Her twin daughters, Tabitha and Elly, had recently left home. Griffin told The Cut “I was so worried about the empty nest…and I thought, Oh, why not?”

Three years later, the single mother is an in-demand model, and says she has nothing to prove. In a glorious riposte to those who believe that over-60s should shy away into lawn bowels and conservatism, Nicola flaunts her flaws. She told The Daily Mail "I have a big tummy, but I gave birth to two 7lb babies at the same time," she says. "It is not a flat stomach, it is rounded. This is me.”

Nicola is using her new found body confidence for revolutionising more than beauty standards, but asserting over-60 women's presence in a youth obsessed culture.

"I have had wonderful feedback from normal ladies, who are saying this is a breakthrough," she says. "They think, 'Great, I am not invisible any more. I too can look good – 56, 66, 76, it doesn't matter'."

On her new career, the model says she "feels a new freedom," proving that it’s never too late to aspire to change and development.

“It's funny. I don't think 56 is old. I think 86 is possibly old. Ninety-six is pretty old. I don't feel it — maybe I should. In fact, I feel the best I've ever felt."

Related links:

These six women prove you can be sexy at any age

The best looks from the advances style blog

The most interesting person on Australian TV

Couple married for 56 years perfectly describe love without using the word love

We all know love when we feel it but saying “I love you” is the easy part. After all, it’s only three little words. Truly expressing how you feel is a little harder – especially without using the world “love” itself.

As part of a Valentine’s Day campaign earlier this year, Hallmark asked real-life couples to describe their relationships without using the world “love”. In this video, Bob and Kim, a couple who’ve been married for over 56 years, are asked separately about each other. They then come together to watch their answers and well, things start to get a bit teary for them (and for us). It’s clear their feelings are so perfectly in sync that these two not only truly love each other but belong together.

“They say two become one and that really has happened,” Bob says.

“He's a part of me... I can't imagine life without him,” Kim says.

Related links:

People aged 0 to 100 define what is love

Old school dating expressions that have different meanings now

83-year-old couple prove it's never too late to tie the knot
