"Absolute breakthrough": New hope in search for Motor Neurone Disease cure

Melbourne researchers are one step closer to finding a cure for Motor Neurone Disease, with the help technology and stem cell research.

Scientists at The Florey Institute of Neuroscience and Mental Health have developed a world-first technology that will speed up the drug testing process to help find an effective treatment and maybe even a cure for the disease.

New machines at the institute can now help determine whether drugs on the market could be used to treat MND in just weeks, a process which previously took decades.

"This is an absolute breakthrough, it's at the cutting edge of technology," Florey MND researcher Professor Brad Turner said.

Animal cells were previously used to test the efficacy of MND drugs, but now thanks to more than 100 MND patients who donated their skin cells to the institute, researchers have a library of stem cells to work with.

The human stem cells can provide scientists with the full scope of the disease, something that they were previously unable to do with just animal cells.

"This is really a game-changer in that we can use their own cells, and we can test drugs directly on their own cells," Florey MND researcher and neurologist Dr Thanuja Dharmadasa said.

Large scale screening will commence thanks to a $5 million grant from the Australian Medical Research Future Fund.

The research is expected to help people like Phil Camden who has been living with the disease for 10 years.

"That's the key to all of us living with MND... we want to do what we can while we can," Camden said.

"We know we're not doing it to find a cure for us. We're doing it for those in the future, my grandkids and their children."

Scientists believe that medication or a cocktail of drugs tailored specifically to a patient is the way forward when it comes to treating the disease.

"Therefore your drug treatments are tailed back to the clinical makeup in the dish and we call that personalised medical treatment," Turner said.

Image: Nine News

“Absolutely livid”: Woman discovers she’s been fired via text on her wedding day

A woman has recalled the moment she discovered she had lost her job after her boss delivered the news via text on the woman’s wedding day.

The bride shared that she got the message from her boss just 30 minutes after she walked down the aisle.

The woman shared the story with Ben Askins, who regularly shares stories online of toxic employers, as she read out the messages she received on what was supposed to be the happiest day of her life.

“On my wedding day, half an hour after the ceremony, I got a text from my boss to let me know I had been fired,” she said.

The message from her boss read, “Hey, I hope your wedding went well and that you had a nice time away. I just wanted to let you know that the decision has been made to unfortunately let you go.”

“An email has been sent to your personal email address detailing this. I'm really sorry that it didn't work out and wish you all the best moving forward x.”

As she was surrounded by loved ones, the bride struggled to contain her emotions as she quickly checked her emails.

“I hope your wedding went well and you had a good time. This email is to inform you that your employment will be terminated effective the 20th of May,” the email read.

“Your employment has been terminated as we unfortunately feel your performance doesn't meet the expectations that we require for the role.”

The woman explained how she felt her manager's email was a “coward's way” of letting her go while she wasn't at work, and was unable to defend herself.

“I wasn't going to let it go but what they did... I was really angry at them,” she said.

“They had the opportunity to do it in person. Everyone was let go in person except for me.”

Askins said the woman’s story was one of the “worst things” he's ever heard a boss do to an employee.

“It's meant to be one of the best, most amazing days ever and they've done that to you,” he told the woman. “You have every right to be absolutely livid with them.”

Askins' video of the woman’s story has been viewed more than 600,000 times, with many taking particular issue on the bride's boss for being “petty” and “inappropriate”.

“This person could have waited a day. It's done on purpose to ruin your special day. Only narcissists would do that,” one said.

Another added, “The fact that she texted her to let her know about the email is so petty. She wanted her to know on her wedding day.”

Bride slammed for “absolutely ridiculous” dress code rules

A bride-to-be has gone viral for all the wrong reasons after her exhaustive list of wedding day dress code rules has divided the internet.

A wedding guest took to a wedding shaming facebook group to share the list of attire rules she received alongside her invitation to the nuptials, sparking a heated debate over the “absolutely ridiculous” dress code.

The specific dress code nitpicks at colour, fabric, length, print, and even the “vibe” clothes give off.

The invite read: “Dress code: Formal (non-black tie) wear. Suits (preferably dark blue or dark grey, no tuxedos), ties, and dress shoes for men. No need to get creative!”

“Linen is better suited for our welcome party; please wear a traditional fabric for the wedding.”

“For women, tea-length dresses are great. Knee-length also works, but make sure it is not too casual (no summer floral dresses, for example) and floor-length is fine but make sure it is not an evening gala gown.”

“Avoid any outrageous necklines, cut-outs, or sparkles. The idea is to be formal and glam, but not like you are on the way to a black-tie gala. Solid jewel tones generally work better than florals. No black please!”

“Most importantly, please make sure to cover your shoulders and back with a cardigan or light scarf!”

The huge list sparked a debate online, with some people claiming the bride is “controlling” and “entitled”, while others defended the bride and groom.

“When in the hell did we start telling guests what to wear?” one person commented, “This is utterly ridiculous and if I received this invitation, it would go directly into the bin.”

Another person wrote, “What is 'traditional fabric'? Am I supposed to show up in undyed wool? If we're being pedantic here, linen is pretty much the most traditional fabric in terms of historic use.”

“They should just pick a uniform for the guests,” another said, while one wrote, “I honestly don't know if this type of dress or outfit exists?”

Some claimed they would go against the dress code on purpose, as one person wrote, “I'd show up in an above-the-knee black floral number with cold shoulder cut outs and a sparkling neckline. For fun, it would be made out of linen.”

However, a few people were quick to defend the bride and groom.

“They could be getting married in a church, mosque, or synagogue - where this is a requirement. I would rather an invite tell me this than show up and not have known. Telling people gives people the opportunity to RSVP no if it's an issue,” one wrote.

“To me this isn't exactly unreasonable,” another said. “It's not some huge list of dos and don'ts or very specific colours that must be adhered to or avoided. It helps guests who have no idea what to wear.”

“Absolute monster”: Bridezilla slammed for unreasonable bridesmaid rules

A woman has shared the reason she quit her best friend’s bridal party, after she was presented with a 14-page contract to be a bridesmaid.

The woman was excited to celebrate her friend Laura’s wedding to the love of her life James, and shared how Laura was a very regimented bride.

“We began planning everything, having multiple meetings to make sure we all are up to date on all plans,” the bridesmaid said in a Reddit thread.

“She is a bit of a neat person and very organised. She made all five bridesmaids and her maid of honour a binder of our duties... We keep track of appointments, vendors — pretty standard stuff.”

“But that’s not all that’s in there.”

The bridesmaid then shared an extensive list of rules the bridal party had to follow for the big day in relation to their physical appearance.

The list included 12 bizarre rules about how they were to look on the big day, saying everyone must wear size-eight dresses, tattoos must be covered or removed and brown eyes are banned.

“No visible tattoos. Must be removed or covered with makeup. No jackets or long sleeves to cover them,” the bride began in the extensive list.

“Full head of hair. No shaved sides or back. Must have a professional wig on if a haircut is not acceptable.”

“Hair can not be too short. It must be able to be braided. Also if your hair is too long like to your waist, it will need to be cut. Hair must be blonde or black. I will tell you what colour is best for you.

“You must fit into a size eight dress. I don’t want to see tents (too big) or rolls (too tight). Dresses have been ordered at size eight only.”

“No brown eyes. That’s James’ and my eye colour so you will need to get contacts. Blue is required.”

Other things banned in the bridal party are “harsh tans”, visible scars and eyeglasses.

“Get contacts or go without for the day,” the bride added.

The bridesmaid felt the rules were directed at her, as she was furious with her friend and decided to leave the bridal party.

“Here is where I started to backpedal and want to walk away,” she said.

“I have very thick but fine hair. I keep the sides shaved down and the top and back long like halfway down my back which helps my migraines.”

“I also have an Eeyore tattoo and a bear paw print tattoo that shows. I also just had bariatric (gastric sleeve) surgery so I’m working on losing weight. I also have glasses.”

Upon looking through the contract, she was mortified to see what the bride expected of her bridesmaids.

“The final kick in the pants was the contract — 14 pages front and back of everything we are required to do. Like not getting pregnant, attend meetings and events, as well as constantly communicate,” the bridesmaid said.

Along with the demands, the bridesmaids were each required to gift the bride and groom a minimum of $150 and “some type of expensive alcohol”, along with a $400 fee to be a bridesmaid.

“I tried to explain I can’t afford this and she told me I had to figure it out. I figured she lost a bridesmaid, me.”

In a follow-up post, the bridesmaid confirmed she was no longer in the bridal party after she quit.

“I am not doing the wedding. The bride is mad but I don’t care,” she said.

Her post has been met with more than 640 comments, with many describing the bride as an “absolute monster”, “cruel” and a “bully” over her outrageous demands.

Image credits: Getty Images / Reddit

“Absolute agony”: Beauty therapist left housebound from steroid cream withdrawal

Beauty therapist and mother Karyn Flett said she has been “addicted” to steroid creams for over 40 years.

In an attempt to ease her painful eczema, Flett revealed she had to wear a balaclava to contain her weeping skin.

She began suffering from eczema patches on her face, hands and joints at age 11 and was prescribed topical steroid creams.

Flett, 52, has used the medication for decades to soothe her itchy and inflamed skin, but she claims she decided to quit using it after experiencing sweats and rashes similar to menopause symptoms.

The mum-of-three, from Fife, Scotland, said she was in “agony” when she went cold turkey and stopped using the medical cream in September 2022.

She revealed she went into topical steroid withdrawal and developed a burning rash all over her body and experienced shakes and sweats.

Flett was housebound for six months and unable to work due to her condition.

She said water felt like acid on her skin and it was so itchy she felt like she could “tear herself to the bone”.

The 52-year-old resorted to wearing a balaclava and full upper-body bandages for three months in order to keep her weeping skin from sticking to her pillow and sheets and to ease the pain of the relentless itching.

She shared that at 45 she began to worry about one of the risks she knew of steroids - that they thin the skin.

“I started thinking, ‘Right, I need to use these less’,” Flett said.

“I was going into bouts of withdrawal and getting these severe symptoms, such as shakes and sweats. I had symptoms similar to menopause.

“I went away in September and decided not to take my steroid cream, and went into full-blown withdrawal.”

Flett explained she had a burning rash from her feet to her entire body.

“My face was on fire, it was swollen. My eyes were really hard to open, they were swollen,” she said.

”I went off my food, and then I started going into full-blown shakes.

“When I travelled home, my clothes stuck to my skin.

“I blistered from my calf up to the back of my thigh and I could feel fluid running down my leg.”

When she arrived home, her husband had to help her into the shower and she had to rip the clothing off her skin.

“When I first got it, I couldn’t bathe all the time, it was just too painful. The water was like acid,” she said.

“I’ve always been a mum who likes to do my hair, makeup, get my lashes done, nails and look my best on a night out.

“That just left me. You lose all your self confidence, and you don’t know how you ever get back to the person you were.”

Flett described the first four to six months of withdrawal as being the worst.

“It’s been likened to being worse than a heroin addiction,” she said.

“You get a deep, absolute bone itch with topical steroid withdrawal.

“It’s absolute agony, you feel like you can tear yourself down to the bone.”

Why Absolutely Fabulous would not work today

Jennifer Saunders has long been gracing the screens in movies, on television and on the stage, entertaining audiences with her wit for over four decades.

The comedy veteran is perhaps best known for starring and co-creating the hit ‘90s series Absolutely Fabulous.

The series follows a dysfunctional relationship between a self-obsessed PR boss and her daughter, and it has been brought back with new episodes various times over the years, even spawning a movie in 2016.

The show, which covered several risqué topics, would likely not get the green light if it were pitched today, Saunders told Today.

"It is not because of cancel culture, it's just you have to jump through so many hoops," she said.

"There's lots more people to make a decision - 20 or 30 years ago people would commission it and you wrote it and it went on telly - I don't think it was the content, the content would seem dated nowadays.

"It is not the cancel culture or the wokeness, there is just an age where you turn into the old farts and you back the old establishment and the new people come up and take over.”

Although we might not see Saunders’ witty Edina Monsoon or Jennifer Lumley’s Patsy stone return to the screens, Saunders shows no signs of leaving the entertainment industry.

The comedy queen has continued to make audiences laugh, working on a number of projects over the recent years and will be starring in a new drama Allelujah with Dame Judy Dench, which will be released on April 6.

“Absolute lie": Furious Charlie Teo hits back at 60 Minutes piece

Neurosurgeon Dr Charlie Teo has slammed 60 Minutes for claims that he charged hefty prices for futile operations that left patients severely injured and families with false hope.

In a one-on-one interview with A Current Affair’s Tracy Grimshaw, Dr Teo responded to a “comprehensive” story aired by the program last weekend, in which multiple families shared their upset about the large financial burdens placed on them and feeling that they had been given false hope by the acclaimed surgeon.

Dr Teo dubbed the report as “abhorrent and disgusting”, and while he admitted he had made mistakes in his career, he said the idea that he was simply in it for the money was false.

“For some outsiders not sitting in the room with you having a discussion with the patient, it‘s so wrong for them to judge you on what’s going on in the room,” he said.

“If someone is trying to portray me as some money-hungry bastard that was operating and hurting children based on money, that’s what I want to correct. It’s not that case.”

The surgeon, who is currently under investigation by the Health Care Complaints Commission, told 2GB host Ben Fordham on Wednesday that he does have regrets about mistakes he’s made.

“But I deny the accusation that it means nothing to me,” Dr Teo said.

“I treat all my patients like a member of my own family.”

When asked if he was sorry about the mistakes he’s made, Dr Teo said he was and that “you would have to be a sociopath” not to be sorry.

“You’d have to be a sociopath not to be sorry because every mistake means some sort of bad outcome for the patient which means quality of life issues, sometimes even death, or paralysis, inability to speak,” he added.

“I mean, if that didn’t affect you, you’d be like Dr Death, you’d be some sort of a psychopath.”

During his 60 Minutes interview, Dr Teo responded to the case of one patient who lost their vision, explaining that he never gave 100 percent certainty that the procedure wouldn’t result in blindness.

“If I had guaranteed that there was no chance of blindness, that is me saying the wrong thing, that’s misinformation,” he said.

“I don’t do that, you can’t do that and not get sued, someone will sue you one day and after 11,000 cases, you don’t think if I have set out to a handful of patients I’d be sued by those patients?

“In that case, I thought the chance of blindness was almost zero, but I never give a guarantee. They are claiming I said that I guarantee you won’t be blind, that is absolute lie, I did not say that I would never say that you be foolish to say that.”

Dr Teo revealed that he has photos of his patients on his phone to remind him of the importance of his job, saying that he carried the devastation of failed operations with him every day.

“There is a French vascular surgeon who wrote a book on the philosophy of surgery, and I don’t think you can put in any better words when he said ‘every surgeon carries with himself a small cemetery’,” he said.

“My cemetery is not small, it’s a significant sized cemetery. (I have) pictures of my patients on my phone to remind me every day I’ve got to do it better.”

While some of his former patients have been critical of the neurosurgeon, others have leapt to his defence, including 24-year-old Monica Lopresti.

After she began to lose her memory in early 2021 but her blood tests returned normal results, it wasn’t until she received the results of an MRI in 2022 that it was discovered that she had a benign cystic tumour in the middle of her brain.

Seven neurosurgeons turned her away, but Dr Teo agreed to perform surgery on her.

Ms Lopresti said Dr Teo explained the risks, which included death, paralysis and being left in a vegetative state, and that she agreed to proceed with the knowledge of the risks.

She added that “it just isn’t true” that the surgeon gave people false hope.

“I wasn’t living a life. I was always calling in sick and I wasn’t having the quality of life that I wanted,” she told news.com.au.

Since August 2021, Dr Teo has been banned from performing operations in Australia but still receives daily requests for help, telling the podcast The Soda Room that he estimates that nine patients a week are left without lifesaving care as a result.

“So the sadness of the situation is that my entire practice was mostly taking out tumours that other people called inoperable, so that was 90 per cent of my practice,” he said.

“That’s 10 tumours a week. So that means, quite conceivably, that there are nine patients a week, who are missing out on either extension of life or cure from a condition that I know that I can help. Now that’s sad.”

Images: A Current Affair

Fabulous at 40, fit at 50 and sexy at 60 – age does not define your health

It’s quite natural to feel a twinge of jealously when you see celebrities like Cher and Jennifer Lopez looking gorgeous and glamourous at red carpet events.

After all, Cher is 76 and J-Lo 53 – how do they look so good when many of us at the same age are either struggling with the horrors of menopause or ailments we put down to our increasing age?

The secret is it’s much more than the way they look. It’s their confidence, vibrance and calm sense of knowing about good health that gives them that extra glow.

And the great news is you can do the same – you can absolutely be healthy at any age – and, like Cher and J-Lo, enjoy the glow and confidence which comes with it.

Accepting sore joints, an aching back, fatigue and extra kilos as inevitable in your forties, fifties and sixties is the first mistake.

Some ailments are common but they’re not normal. We place limitations on ourselves because of our age – which, after all, is just a number - missing a lot of opportunities in life.

Sure, there are plenty of physical changes that start to develop in those middle years but they can be minimised with extra diligence.

I’m proud to say that I haven’t gained any weight since I first began working in the health and fitness industry 30 years ago.

I don’t spend countless hours in the gym, or starve and deprive myself. But I do make sure I exercise, do strength conditioning and have a healthy diet.

Should you walk an average of 8000 steps a day? Yes, at any age. Should you do strength training three times a week? Yes, for bone density and muscle tissue – and it can be as simple as doing a body weight workout at home, going to the gym or playing a game of tennis. The trick to exercise is being consistent – you’re not training for a marathon, just keeping your body healthy!

You also need to be diligent about including a good source of protein with every meal, more in fact than what you ate when you were younger. Protein helps repair cells in our body which in turn facilitates muscle repair and improves our skin. (That helps give you that enviable celebrity glow!)

I’m not saying these years aren’t without challenges such as arthritis, menopause, high cholesterol, and blood pressure that often start to emerge in the 40s and continue through the ensuing decades.

But the answer is to not blame age for everything. Maybe you’re drinking too much alcohol, not being as active as you should be and choosing to let your diet slide. You need to be honest with yourself.

Take some of that hard earned wisdom that we love about getting older and use it maintain your best, vibrant self. You can do it!

This article was written by Donna Aston. Donna is one of Australia’s top nutritionists. "Absolutely ridiculous": Aussie grandma charged after exposing sex offender

Content warning: This article includes mentions of Child Sexual Abuse (CSA).

A grandmother-of-seven has been charged and hit with a hefty fine after going to great lengths to expose a convicted paedophile who moved to her community.

Maxine Davey held up signs reading, ‘Keep children safe from peodophiles (sic)’, along a busy stretch of road to warn residents of the Central Queensland neighbourhood of Calliope that the man had moved there after being released from prison.

However, the 59-year-old landed in hot water when she filmed the outside of the man’s home and shared the footage - which included vision of his property and vehicles that could be identified - on Facebook, prompting angry locals to comment and make threats.

Ms Davey was found guilty of one count of unlawful stalking, which comes with a potential five-year jail term.

“I just wanted to hold up a sign, publicise the fact that other parents (need) to be aware, but then I stepped over the line and broke the law,” she told A Current Affair.

“I crossed the line by posting [the video]. I didn’t know at the time I’d broken the law, but obviously [the police] told me.”

Ms Davey was able to avoid prison time after the magistrate ruled that she pay a $2200 fine instead. Her phone was also confiscated and a conviction was recorded.

“I’m really devastated by it all,” Ms Davey said of the conviction. “I’ve never considered myself a criminal and I’ll have this charge against me for the rest of my life.”

Since the legal action, sexual assault survivors who were victims of the man Ms Davey exposed have rallied behind her, saying she should be treated as a “hero”, not a criminal.

“It is absolutely ridiculous how the justice system works. She shouldn't be put through this. This is not fair,” one victim said.

“I believe she is honestly like a hero. It absolutely breaks my heart that she's trying to do the right thing (as) a human and she's absolutely being torn apart for it,” another victim said.

The 41-year-old was convicted of rape and multiple counts of indecent treatment of children under the age of 16 and sentenced to two years and nine months of jail time last year.

According to the Queensland Government’s website, confidential details about a sex offender can be released by the chief executive of Corrective Services when individual community members need to know information about the offender, such as their employment.

Unlike in the US, where Megan’s Law requires police to release information about registered sex offenders to the public, individuals who request confidential information in Australia must sign a confidentiality agreement first.

If you or someone you know is in need of support as a result of sexual assault or child sexual abuse, contact the Blue Knot Helpline and Redress Support Service on 1300 657 380, or LifeLine on 13 11 14 for immediate support.

Image: Nine

“I’m still absolutely certain”: William Tyrrell neighbour speaks

Image: NSW Police

A man who claims to have seen William Tyrrell in the back seat of a speeding car on the day of his disappearance is still as confident as ever about what he witnessed that fateful day in 2014.

Ronald Chapman, a man waiting for his delivery of plants on the morning of September the 12th 2014, says “two cars gunned it” around the corner of his street about a kilometre away from William’s foster grandmother’s home in Kendall on the NSW Mid-North coast.

He claims the little boy was unrestrained in the back seat of the Landcruiser and still wearing a Spider-Man suit.

'I may be an old man, but I'm not a blind man,' Mr Chapman, who is due to turn 83 next month, told the Daily Mail.

'I'm still absolutely certain it was him. September 12 2014 is a day I will never forget.'

The retiree, who was born and raised in Kendall, told an inquest into William's disappearance and presumed death he was in the back seat of the gold or brown Landcruiser when it sped past his home about 10:45 am the morning he vanished.

A second car was a short distance behind.

In the seven years since William's disappearance, Mr Chapman claims he's 'never seen either car again'.

In a town as small as Kendall, home to just 1,141 residents, that is strange in and of itself.

'Everybody knows everybody here,' he said. 'I would've seen the cars again [if it was unrelated].'

He recalled seeing the face of a boy in the back seat of the Landcruiser, unrestrained but not distressed, while windows in the second car were too tinted to see inside.

Mr Chapman shared this information with police years after he vanished, initially under the impression police were doing the rounds to speak with locals and would get to him when they had a chance.

In total, he gave detectives three detailed interviews sharing what he saw and a further two at a coronial inquiry in 2019.

On Tuesday authorities crossed Batar Creek Road into new territory at the behest of professional body finder and water science expert Jon Olley. Within hours at the site, police have uncovered a large yellow bag which contains evidence that is being sent for forensic testing. Two more items were uncovered in a similar area.

“An absolute disaster”: Prince William calls out billionaires’ space race

“Absolutely heartbreaking”: Geronimo the alpaca put down amid public outcry

A British alpaca named Geronimo has been put down after making headlines around the world as supporters battled to overturn a court warrant for his death.

The court issued a warrant for Geronimo to be put down after the alpaca returned a positive test result for bovine tuberculosis.

Geronimo was put down on Wednesday at his owner’s Gloucestershire farm by vets, after the Department of Food, Environment and Rural Affairs (Defra) confirmed he had tested positive a second time.

Helen MacDonal, Geronimo’s owner, had previously told A Current Affair that she didn’t believe her eight-year-old alpaca had the disease.

The 50-year-old went on to say the decision to put him down was “absolutely heartbreaking”.

“They are assassinating him, it’s like an execution and there’s no foundation that’s the horror of it,” Ms MacDonald said at the time.

National disgrace #geronimo pic.twitter.com/8jHjysF9Zn
— dominic dyer (@domdyer70) August 31, 2021

Geronimo was born in Australia and grew up in New Zealand, where tested negative to the disease prior to Helen importing him to her farm.

However, he was tested once again upon arrival to the UK in 2017, where he received two positive results.

Ms MacDonald, a veterinary nurse, appealed to Defra to allow Geronimo to take a third test or allow him to live to help with research into the disease.

She argued that the test was flawed and that he had previously tested positive because of repeated priming with a purified protein derivative of bovine tuberculosis bacteria called tuberculin.

In a last-ditch effort to save the animal, Ms MacDonald took her case to the High Court.

However, she lost on August 18, with the court issuing a warrant giving Defra until September 4 to euthanise Geronimo.

More than 140,000 people have signed a petition to save the alpaca, while Ms MacDonald has invested over $100,000 in the cause.

Protestors took to the streets in early August to demonstrate against the ruling, with about 30 campaigners marching from Defra’s headquarters to Number 10 Downing Street.

<img style="width: 0px;
