Original Bee Gees star passes away aged 78

Colin ‘Smiley’ Petersen has passed away aged 78. News of his death was posted on the official Facebook page of tribute band Best of the Bee Gees. “It is with a heavy heart we announce the passing of our dear friend Colin ‘Smiley’ Petersen,” they began. “He enriched our lives and bound our group with love, care and respect. “Not sure how we can go on without his glowing smile and deep friendship. We love you Col. Rest in Peace.” Petersen who was one of the original members of Australian band Bee Gees was born in Kingaroy, Queensland, has been credited for contributing to the band's rise to global superstardom. He was the band's first drummer and performed some of their most beloved songs including Massachusetts, To Love Somebody and Words. Petersen attended the same school in Redcliffe, Queensland as bandmates and brothers Barry Robin and Maurice Gibb, where he first developed an interest in music. After graduating, Petersen moved to the UK to break into the film industry, before he joined the Bee Gees in the 60's becoming the first non-Gibb brother to join the group. “There was an understanding that when the Gibbs’ arrived in England, that if the film thing didn’t work out, I’d join their band,” Petersen told Geelong Independent in 2022. “So I became the fourth Bee Gee, and that was obviously a big turning point in my life.” He left the band after the first phase of their career, just before they reached peak stardom in the '70s disco era, due to conflicts with the group's then-manager Robert Stigwood. Petersen moved back to Australia with his family in 1974, and in 2019 he joined the tribute group Best of the Bee Gees. His death comes after Maurice's sudden death in 2003, which prompted the Bee Gees to retire after 45 years. Robin later died in 2012 aged 62, leaving Barry, Vince Melouney and Geoff Bridgford as the last surviving members of the group. Beloved Friends, Tootsie and Mr Mom star passes away

Teri Garr, the beloved actress known for her iconic roles in classic films such as Young Frankenstein and Tootsie and her appearances on Friends, has passed away at the age of 79. Her death, confirmed by her publicist Heidi Schaeffer, occurred on Tuesday in Los Angeles, surrounded by family and friends. Garr's passing follows a long battle with multiple sclerosis, a condition she publicly disclosed in 2002 to raise awareness about the disease and its impact on daily life. Born Terry Ann Garr in Lakewood, Ohio, in 1944, Teri grew up in a theatrical family; her father was a vaudeville performer and her mother a Rockette. One Direction star passes away aged 31

Former One Direction star Liam Payne has reportedly been found dead outside a hotel in Buenos Aires, in Argentina, according to local newspaper La Nacion. The 31-year-old is believed to have fallen from the third floor of a hotel at around 5pm local time the newspaper said, citing emergency services. According to La Nacion the local police station was called by the hotel manager who reported "an aggressive man who could be under the influence of drugs or alcohol". It is reported that Payne fell from around 13 or 14 metres and suffered "very serious injuries incompatible with life." Alberto Crescenti, head of the state emergency medical system SAME (El Sistema de Atención Médica de Emergencias), told local TV that Payne had fallen into a courtyard of the Casa Sur Hotel in the Palermo neighbourhood. “At 17.11, a SAME team arrived and confirmed the man’s death. We later learned that he was a singer in a musical group. “Unfortunately, he had injuries incompatible with life as a result of his fall, so we had to confirm his death. There was no possibility of resuscitation.” Payne was one of the founding members of One Direction, one of the most loved boy bands of the past decade. He auditioned first as a solo act for the UK reality series The X Factor in 2008, before being eliminated. Cal Wilson's husband shares heartfelt tribute one year after her passing

It's been one year since Cal Wilson tragically passed away, and now her husband has shared a moving tribute in her memory. Chris Woods took to Instagram to reflect on life since his wife's passing, and looked back on all "the little things" that made her special. “It’s hard to believe it’s been a year since you left us. Some days feel endless without you, while others rush by in a blur, reminding me just how quickly time passes. Not a moment goes by that I don’t miss you and feel a pang of sadness for all that you’ve missed,” he began. “You’d be so proud of Mr. Bear; he’s blossomed into an amazing person, full of resilience and kindness. Your love and warmth are woven into him, things I worried might fade but have only grown stronger. “Today, we’re focusing on all the good memories—the joy, laughter, and love you brought into our lives. We want to embrace the balance of a little sadness with a lot of joy, just as you would have wanted. “As we slowly move forward towards the next chapter, your people have been our rock, showing us all the love and kindness that you embodied. We are so fortunate to have them by our side. Heartbreaking final message as world's oldest woman passes away

Maria Branyas Morera, the world's oldest woman, has died aged 117. The centurion, who has lived through two world wars and a global pandemic, passed away “peacefully and without pain”, according to her family members who announced her tragic passing on X, formerly Twitter. “Maria Branyas has left us. “She died as she wished: in her sleep, peacefully and without pain. “We will always remember her for her advice and her kindness.” In a heartbreaking final message shared to X on Tuesday, Morera shared that she felt "weak" and that the "time is near". “The time is near. Don’t cry, I don’t like tears. And above all, don’t suffer for me," she wrote. “Wherever I go, I will be happy.” Morera became the world's oldest living person after French nun Lucile Randon passed away aged 118 in January last year. Before her death, Morera agreed to undergo scientific testing by researchers who collected samples of her saliva, blood and urine, in hopes to gain insight into the secrets to a long life. They will compare them with those of her 80-year-old daughter and hope that by studying her genes they may develop drugs which could combat diseases associated with ageing. Shannen Doherty's powerful final act before passing

Shannen Doherty agreed to settle her divorce with ex-husband Kurt Iswarienko just one day before her death. According to court documents obtained by Page Six on Monday, the former 90210 star agreed to waive spousal support and to a "default or uncontested dissolution" of their marriage, indicating that the former couple settled their split outside of court. While Doherty signed the agreement on Friday, July 12, her ex-husband signed it on Saturday July 13 - the day the actress lost her nine-year-long battle with <a href="https://www.oversixty.co.nz/health/caring/force-of-nature-tributes-flow-for-shannen-doherty" target="_blank" rel="noopener">breast cancer</a>. “It is the mutual wish and desire of the parties to effect a full, complete, and final settlement of all their respective property interests, future and present, by this Judgement, and … completely resolve any and all issues relating to division of property, reimbursement claims and/or credits, spousal support, and attorneys’ fees and costs,” the documents reportedly state. Not long after Doherty passed away, her friend Tara Furiani called out Iswarienko for his lack of "humanity" during his and Doherty's bitter divorce battle which began in April 2023. She claimed that he was "dragging his feet” so he wouldn’t have to pay her. “Life is so hard … life is extra hard with cancer and without the support you thought you’d have,” Furiani shared. “If you have the opportunity to be a decent person, take it. You have no idea what people are dealing with and going through.” Iswarienko's lawyer has previously rejected all claims that Iswarienko was delaying the divorce alleging that he wanted to finalise it in September 2023 with a settlement deal, which she denied because he “skirted around” how much he earned in the early aughts of their marriage. Shelley Duvall passes away at 75

Shelley Duvall who starred in Stanley Kubrick's iconic horror film The Shining has passed away aged 75. Duvall died in her sleep on Thursday at her home in Bianco, Texas, after diabetes complications according to her friend and publicist Gary Springer. Her longtime partner, Dan Gilroy shared a heartbreaking statement. "My dear, sweet, wonderful life, partner, and friend left us last night," he said. "Too much suffering lately, now she's free. Fly away beautiful Shelley." Known for her thin physique, large expressive eyes and powerful performances, Duvall was remembered for her standout roles alongside Jack Nicholson in The Shining and Robin Williams in the comedy Popeye. She became Robert Altman's protégé after she was spotted by his staff members at a party in Houston, Texas in 1970, where she attended junior college, and Altman was preparing to film Brewster McCloud at the time. She also played memorable roles in some of his other films, including Nashville in 1975 and 3 Women in 1977, which won her the Cannes Best Actress Award. "He offers me damn good roles," Duvall said about Altman for The New York Times in 1977. "None of them have been alike. He has a great confidence in me, and a trust and respect for me, and he doesn't put any restrictions on me or intimidate me, and I love him. I remember the first advice he ever gave me: 'Don't take yourself seriously.'" Despite The Shining being one of her greatest roles, filming it took an emotional toll on her, after having to be in hysterics during long days of filming, with one scene reportedly requiring 127 takes, By the 1990s she began retiring from acting and retreated from public life. "How would you feel if people were really nice, and then, suddenly, on a dime, they turn on you?" Duvall told the Times earlier this year. "You would never believe it unless it happens to you. Young and the Restless star passes away after cancer battle

Veteran soap opera actress Meg Bennett has died at the of 75 after a lengthy battle with cancer. According to <a href="https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/tv/tv-news/meg-bennett-dead-young-and-restless-1235878548/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Hollywood Reporter</a>, Bennett's family announced that she passed away on April 11th. Bennett had a prolific career in the world of soap operas as both a writer and actress, after working on high profile shows such as The Young and the Restless, General Hospital, Santa Barbara and many more. She became most known for her role on The Young and the Restless, appearing on 52 episodes from 1980–2020 playing the role of Julia Martin/Julia Newman, the spouse of Eric Braeden’s character Victor Newman. Bennett also had a stellar career on Broadway, appearing in the initial run of the musical Grease in 1972 playing the role of Marty Maraschino for more than two years. She also racked up a significant credit as a writer on a number of soaps, stepping behind the camera on The Young and the Restless after her character was phased out. In the interview in 1985, Bennett opened up about the differences in her approach to acting and writing. She said, "I'll admit, acting makes me a little crazy sometimes: You wait to audition. You wait for the part. When you're writing, you're in control. I can initiate things on my own when I'm writing." BBC presenter passes away at just 32

BBC Scotland presenter Nick Sheridan has passed away at the age of 32, with heartfelt tributes pouring in from his devastated colleagues. Sheridan reportedly "collapsed while running" for the second time in recent weeks, after suffering a brain aneurysm. After several days in intensive care, the journalist died on Wednesday surrounded by loved ones. Head of News at BBC Scotland shared an emotional tribute to Sheridan, saying Nick had been a "wonderful colleague to those of us who have worked with him". He added, "He was a hugely talented journalist, presenter and author - and one of those rare people who light up the lives of everyone around them. Funny, clever, kind. A lovely man. "Our hearts go out to his parents, who have been with him over the past ten days, to his partner, Lewis, and to all the rest of his family and friends." First Minister Humza Yousaf also paid tribute to Sheridan in the Scottish Parliament chamber, describing him as an "extremely talented journalist and author". "My thoughts are with his family, his many friends and indeed his colleagues. It will undoubtedly be a very sad time for them," he said. Since joining the corporation in 2018, Sheridan presented programmes including Reporting Scotland, Drivetime, the Nine and Seven Days, before dialling back his time on screen to pursue his passion of writing children's books. In one of her latest videos, she answered one of her follower's question asking whether it was true that if cruise staff started giving away ice cream, it meant that they needed more freezer space for a body. “This is unfortunately often true,” she said. “If the crew suddenly makes a bunch of ice cream available to passengers, ‘Free ice cream party’, it is often because more people have died on the ship than they have room for in the morgue.” She said that most large ships are legally required to maintain a morgue and carry body bags in the event a passenger dies mid-journey and added that she “thankfully” didn't have to deal with the "morbid stuff". “But we were friends with some crew members who did deal with it and they said maybe four to 10 people die every cruise,” she claimed. “There are a lot of older people on ships, and often (out of) a ship that carried maybe 2500 to 3000 passengers on a typical cruise, four to 10 people would die. “So the morgue, I believe they said held about seven people, and if more than seven people died on that particular ship, they would have to start moving bodies to the freezer.” She claimed that if employees would have to "make room for the extra bodies" in the freezer, they would have to take out everything including ice cream. Casey McIntyre, 38, has announced her own death in a heartbreaking post shared on Instagram. The mother-of-one from New York, passed away after a battle with stage four ovarian cancer on November 12. Casey's death was announced on Tuesday via <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/CzmnPArO37i/?img_index=1" target="_blank" rel="noopener">a post</a> that she had penned before her passing, which was shared by her husband Andrew. The post showed a carousel of images highlighting special moments of Casey's life, including her childhood, their wedding and a few photos with their 18-month old daughter. The statement began: "A note to my friends: if you’re reading this it means I have passed away. I'm so sorry, it's horses*** and we both know it." "The cause was a recurrence of my previously diagnosed stage four ovarian cancer. "I loved each and every one of you with my whole heart and I promise you, I knew how deeply I was loved. "The five months in home hospice that I got to spend with my family and friends in Virginia, Rhode Island, and New York were magical." Tragically, Casey did not have the chance to finish her post, with her husband adding a tribute to his wife in an "editors note" which read: "Casey meant to finish this post with a list of things that were a comfort & a joy to her during her life, and I am heartbroken that I will never see that list.
