"My heart is broken": Mariah Carey reveals sad double tragedy

Mariah Carey has revealed a devastating double tragedy, as both her mother and sister passed away on the same day.

In a heartbreaking statement to People, the singer announced the deaths of her mum Patricia, 87, and sister Alison, 63, who died over the weekend.

Carey's statement read, "My heart is broken that I've lost my mother this past weekend. Sadly, in a tragic turn of events, my sister lost her life on the same day."

"I feel blessed that I was able to spend the last week with my mom before she passed."

"I appreciate everyone's love and support and respect for my privacy during this impossible time."

No cause of death has been revealed for either member of the family.

Carey famously had a turbulent relationship with her mother and sister over the years, and was estranged from Alison for three decades before her untimely death.

In 2016, Alison, who was a recovering drug addict, made a plea to her famous sister through the Daily Mail to ask for support, saying, "Mariah I love you, I desperately need your help."

As well as substance abuse, Alison endured homelessness throughout her life and tested positive for the HIV virus.

Mariah opened up about complicated relationships with her mom and sister in her 2020 memoir, The Meaning Of Mariah Carey.

"Like many aspects of my life, my journey with my mother has been full of contradictions and competing realities. It's never been only black-and-white — it's been a whole rainbow of emotions," she explained.

She said their relationship was a "prickly rope of pride, pain, shame, gratitude, jealousy, admiration, and disappointment", however the book was still dedicated to Patricia.

"And to Pat, my mother, who, through it all, I do believe actually did the best she could," the singer penned in the dedication. "I will love you the best I can, always."

Some skincare rules were made to be broken

Beauty influencer Natalie O’Neill has gained quite the following on TikTok with her honest beauty advice, and has now shared her three least favourite - and most overrated - pieces of skincare advice.

As anyone with sensitive skin knows, there’s no one-size-fits-all solution, though it doesn’t stop us from trying every new hack and ‘groundbreaking’ product to hit the market.

But according to Natalie, that in itself can be causing half the trouble. Her answer? Focus on the basics - cleansing, toning, and moisturising - and stop following these three popular but probably doomed-to-failed ‘rules’.

Exfoliating

“The first one is exfoliation,” she said. “Ask any dermatologist, they will tell you you don’t need to exfoliate every day. Skin care brands have exfoliating products that they want to sell to you, and you will use them up quicker if you exfoliate every day.

“The only thing is, your skin doesn’t need to be exfoliated every day. And if you do that you probably will have worse skin. We are conditioned to feel like skin needs exfoliation, but it actually exfoliates itself. It has its own natural turnover, it doesn’t need you to interact with it all the time.”

Natalie suggested instead just protecting skin, keeping it hydrated, and exfoliating maybe once every one to two weeks at most.

Vitamin C

“In at number two is vitamin C,” Natalie continued. “I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again, several dermatologists that I follow don’t use vitamin C. It’s not that necessary, and it can actually be one of the most irritating ‘actives’ available.”

After going on to list some popular online dermatologists that she knows don’t consider it important either, Natalie said that “again, it’s the brands telling you that you need to use it every day. And actually, you don’t.

“And you might find that if you stop using it you would have much calmer skin. That’s what I found.”

Skin cycling

Skin cycling is a skincare routine that calls for ‘rest days’, where the skin is given time to ‘repair’ itself after using products. Supposedly, this has the added benefit of preventing the likes of irritation and inflammation.

“I know that the person who invented it is on this app [TikTok], I know that, I respect her,” Natalie began for her third take. “In a way, skin cycling has helped lots of people, and that’s a good thing.

“But let me ask you this - if those people weren’t using chemical exfoliants and retinoids prior to doing skin cycling, it would therefore make sense that they are now experiencing good results after using chemical exfoliants and retinoids.

“On one hand I do understand why people do skin cycling, because it makes a complicated subject a lot easier to absorb and implement in your daily life. But on the other hand, it’s not really anything new.”

Her answer? “Use your retinoid or your chemical exfoliant more consistently” to see better results.

Images: TikTok

Heart broken widow speaks following the death of her husband

A heartbroken widow has opened up about her husband dying in her warms, while the couple waited over 40 minutes for an ambulance to arrive.

Stewart Grant, aged 82, suffered breathing difficulties at 12:30 pm on January 29 at his Phillip Island home in Victoria, but paramedics were not dispatched immediately despite his family calling triple-zero.

His wife of more than 50 years, Carol Grant, said she was initially told no one was coming.

But a short time later, Mr Grant stopped breathing.

An operator called back 12 minutes after the initial conversation and counted with Ms Grant while she performed CPR on her husband.

“She asked me to get him out of bed, and put him on the floor, lie him on his back and to start CPR,” she said.

After the ambulance was finally dispatched, an alert system to find trained volunteers was initiated and three locals came to help.

“I’d just like to thank them for everything they tried to do. I’m just so grateful for their help as I couldn’t have continued (performing CPR),” Ms Grant said.

“Even though it wasn’t successful, I’m just so grateful to them for trying.”

Health Minister Martin Foley said the case was tragic, and told reporters on Thursday that there were issues with how the call was prioritised by the triple-zero call service ESTA.

“As I understand, the issue wasn’t so much the dispatch of the ambulance. The paramedics were there, other volunteers in the nearby community were there, once the call was distributed,” he said.

State Opposition Leader Matthew Guy said the case was horrifying and demanded an explanation from the government.

“If it’s the call-out and dispatch system, then it’s the government’s to manage ... It’s just not good enough to say it’s someone else’s fault. How the hell can this happen in Victoria in 2022?” he asked.

Premier Daniel Andrews sent his condolences and said the coroner would examine the tragedy.

“This pandemic has made the job of our ambos really tough, they’re all working as hard as they can and any time that a patient dies I know that that’s carried by our paramedics; they feel it very heavily,” he told reporters.

Ambulance Victoria has also sent its sincere condolences to the Grant family and said it had undertaken a review of the case.

Mr Grant’s case is not the only recent death in Victoria following a long wait for paramedics.

Victorian paramedics experienced their busiest quarter on record in the last three months of 2021. Data shows ambulances were called to 91,397 code-one cases during that period, a 16% increase on the same time in 2020.

Images: 7News

Search for missing campers unearths tragic allegations

New evidence suggests that the bodies believed to be that of missing campers Carol Clay and Russell Hill may have allegedly been burned before they were buried.

According to reports from the Herald Sun, the pair of bodies allegedly may have been set on fire within metres of where the remains were found in dense bushland in the remote area of East Gippsland in Victoria.

On November 30th, human remains were uncovered in the Grants Historical Area near the remote town of Dargo, 320km northeast of Melbourne.

The discovery was made almost two years after Carol and Russell went missing.

The remains have yet to be formally identified, with DNA testing results expected to take some time.

Detectives from the missing persons squad combed through the scene meticulously last week, using the same methods and relying on the same arson chemist who originally examined Mr Hill and Ms Clay’s campsite when they disappeared in 2020.

Police are currently waiting for the forensic testing results of a Nissan Patrol vehicle that was recently seized during the investigation.

Victoria Police are also searching for a trailer that was resold on Gumtree, which may assist the investigation.

Russell Hill and Carol Clay were last heard from on March 20th 2020 when they embarked on their camping trip.

Days later, campers found Russell's car that had been destroyed by fire near the campsite.

A 55-year-old Caroline Springs man, Greg Lynn, has been charged with two counts of murder.

Mr Lynn remains in police custody and is expected to face court on May 31th next year.

According to 7NEWS, more details are now known about the vehicle.

Image: 7NEWS

The car is a blue ‘GU’ model Nissan Patrol wagon, and the five-door car is a Series 1 which would have been built between 1997 and 2001.

But the biggest clue to help narrow down the search is that the car has an awning on one side with the name “KINGS” on it, as well as a PVC water pipe attached to the driver’s side.

Image: 7NEWS

Police have said they want to speak to the driver or anyone who may have seen the vehicle at the time.

“We can’t eliminate this vehicle. The person driving this vehicle is a person of interest,” Detective Inspector Andrew Stamper said last week.

Police also released images of charred items that were found inside the campers’ burnt-out tent, with authorities believing it unlikely that they would have put the items there.

“The only reason we can assume that Russell didn’t camp in the best spot, was potentially there was somebody already there,” Detective Stamper said.

“There’s been some sort of argument and maybe it’s escalated from there.

“It’s a theory, but it’s probably the best theory we’ve got at the moment.”

Image: Victoria Police

One that Russell was missing and two, he was camping with someone else.”

Mr Hill and Ms Clay were last seen on March 20, 2020, and police have conducted extensive searches since.

Detective Inspector Andrew Stamper believes the bodies of Mr Hill, 74, and Ms Clay, 73, are still within Wonnangatta Valley.

On Sunday, police released an image of a blue mid-late 1990s Nissan Patrol towing a trailer that they believe could be crucial in discovering what happened to the couple.

Inspector Stamper said witness statements placed the vehicle in Wonnangatta Valley - and near the campsite - at the same time as Ms Clay and Mr Hill.

Police are calling for the driver or any witnesses who may have seen the vehicle to come forward and speak with them.

Image: Victoria Police

Why living in an Instagram hotspot isn’t picture perfect

Alice Johnston, a longtime resident of the London neighbourhood of Notting Hill, which is the setting for the Julia Roberts film of the same name, has found its growing popularity as a tourist hotspot comes with highs and lows.

With its pastel-painted row houses, the area has become a popular destination as a background for Instagram pics, and Johnston has seen all kinds of crazy behaviour as visitors snap their photos.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Callista DeGraw (@callistagoesabroad)

Johnston says there are some good stories, like the day she and a friend were walking his French bulldog.
