AI recruitment tools are “automated pseudoscience” says Cambridge researchers

<p>AI is set to bring in a whole new world in a huge range of industries. Everything from art to medicine is being overhauled by machine learning.</p> <p>But researchers from the University of Cambridge have published a paper in <a href="https://link.springer.com/journal/13347" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><em>Philosophy &amp; Technology</em></a> to call out AI used to recruit people for jobs and boost workplace diversity – going so far as to call them an “automated pseudoscience”.</p> <p>“We are concerned that some vendors are wrapping ‘snake oil’ products in a shiny package and selling them to unsuspecting customers,” said co-author Dr Eleanor Drage, a researcher in AI ethics.</p> <p>“By claiming that racism, sexism and other forms of discrimination can be stripped away from the hiring process using artificial intelligence, these companies reduce race and gender down to insignificant data points, rather than systems of power that shape how we move through the world.”</p> <p>Recent years have seen the emergence of AI tools marketed as an answer to lack of diversity in the workforce. This can be anything from use of chatbots and resume scrapers, to line up prospective candidates, through to analysis software for video interviews.</p> <p>Those behind the technology claim it cancels out human biases against gender and ethnicity during recruitment, instead using algorithms that read vocabulary, speech patterns, and even facial micro-expressions, to assess huge pools of job applicants for the right personality type and ‘culture fit’.</p> <p>But AI isn’t very good at removing human biases. To train a machine-learning algorithm, you have to first put in lots and lots of past data. In the past for example, AI tools have discounted women all together in fields where more men were traditionally hired. <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2018/oct/10/amazon-hiring-ai-gender-bias-recruiting-engine" target="_blank" rel="noopener">In a system created by Amazon</a>, resumes were discounted if they included the word ‘women’s’ – like in a “women’s debating team” and downgraded graduates of two all-women colleges. Similar problems occur with race.</p> <div class="newsletter-box"> <div id="wpcf7-f6-p218666-o1" class="wpcf7" dir="ltr" lang="en-US" role="form"> </div> </div> <p>The Cambridge researchers suggest that even if you remove ‘gender’ or ‘race’ as distinct categories, the use of AI may ultimately increase uniformity in the workforce. This is because the technology is calibrated to search for the employer’s fantasy ‘ideal candidate’, which is likely based on demographically exclusive past results.</p> <p>The researchers actually went a step further, and worked with a team of Cambridge computer science undergraduates, to build an AI tool modelled on the technology. You can check it out <a href="https://personal-ambiguator-frontend.vercel.app/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">here</a>.</p> <p>The tool demonstrates how arbitrary changes in facial expression, clothing, lighting and background can give radically different personality readings – and so could make the difference between rejection and progression.</p> <p>“While companies may not be acting in bad faith, there is little accountability for how these products are built or tested,” said Drage.</p> <p>“As such, this technology, and the way it is marketed, could end up as dangerous sources of misinformation about how recruitment can be ‘de-biased’ and made fairer.”</p> <p>The researchers suggest that these programs are a dangerous example of ‘technosolutionism’: turning to technology to provide quick fixes for deep-rooted discrimination issues that require investment and changes to company culture.</p> <p>“Industry practitioners developing hiring AI technologies must shift from trying to correct individualized instances of ’bias’ to considering the broader inequalities that shape recruitment processes,” <a href="https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s13347-022-00543-1" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the team write in their paper.</a></p> <p>“This requires abandoning the ‘veneer of objectivity’ that is grafted onto AI systems, so that technologists can better understand their implication — and that of the corporations within which they work — in the hiring process.”</p> <p><img id="cosmos-post-tracker" style="opacity: 0; height: 1px!important; width: 1px!important; border: 0!important; position: absolute!important; z-index: -1!important;" src="https://syndication.cosmosmagazine.com/?id=218666&amp;title=AI+recruitment+tools+are+%E2%80%9Cautomated+pseudoscience%E2%80%9D+says+Cambridge+researchers" width="1" height="1" /></p> <p><em>Written by Jacinta Bowler. Duchess of Cambridge wears $3.80 earrings for her first royal engagement of the year

<p><em>Image: 9Honey </em></p> <p>The Duchess of Cambridge stepped out showcasing her signature mix of high and low end fashion in a chic return to work for the new year.</p> <p>Kate Middleton visited The Foundling Museum in London on Wednesday wearing a teal blue coat over the top of an all-navy ensemble. </p> <p>But her standout accessory was the royal's $3.80 gold earrings from UK store Accessorize.</p> <p>The mini hammered doorknocker hoop earrings from the high street chain (similar to Lovisa) were originally £7 ($13.20) but were in the recent sale, dropping in price to £2.10 ($3.80) — needless to say, they're now sold out.</p> <p>The only other jewels that Kate could be seen wearing was her heirloom sapphire and diamond engagement ring, which previously belonged to Princess Diana, and her wedding band.</p> <p>The Duchess, who celebrated her 40th birthday earlier this month, wasn't just cost-efficient in her jewellery department. Even the tailored blue coat has been seen before, with the Duchess last wearing it in January 2020, during a visit to LEYF Stockwell Gardens Nursery &amp; Pre-School in London.</p> <p>The Duchess also sported a turtle neck knit and navy suede heels, both of which are understood to be items worn to previous engagements and events.</p> <p>Kate's return to work for the new year wouldn't be complete without her signature bouncy blowdry, which bobbed as the royal arrived at The Foundling Museum with husband Prince William.</p>

Queen enjoys a week with the grandchildren at Balmoral

<p>The Queen has spent a very special week with Prince William, Kate Middleton and their children at Balmoral - a place which holds many fond memories for the Queen of all the times she visited with Prince Philip at her side.</p> <p>Over the week, the Queen and her extended family enjoyed fishing, riding horses and hiking according to a royal insider.</p> <p>Prince William, 38, and Kate Middleton, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis all attended. It was a time for the Cambridges to spend some 'special time' with the monarch.</p> <p>It’s thought this special week at the Queen’s Scottish estate in Aberdeenshire over the Bank Holiday weekend would have 'lifted the monarch's spirits.'</p> <p>But at the same time, it would be ‘bittersweet’ for the Queen as it’s the first time she’ll be hosting a family gathering at Balmoral without Prince Philip.</p> <p><strong>First time the family has visited since Prince Philip’s death</strong></p> <p>Writing in <em>Vanity Fair</em>, Katie Nicholl revealed the occasion marked the first time the family had been able to come together for a trip since Prince Philip's death in April.</p> <p>Meanwhile another insider revealed the annual trip over the last week of August had become a tradition for the family, with the monarch reserving the Bank Holiday weekend for time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.</p> <p>They said: 'In the past it has turned into one big sleepover with lots of the Queen's grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her Majesty enjoys it immensely.'</p> <p>The royal expert also reported the Queen has been known to leave gifts for her grandchildren on their beds during their stay at Balmoral.</p> <p>The monarch arrived at the Aberdeenshire estate in late July and typically remains until early October.</p> <p>It comes after a source claimed the Queen was 'itching for things to get back to normal' during her annual break and she hoped to host a BBQ for the royal family at the castle.</p> <p><strong>Fergie and Prince Andrew are coming as well</strong></p> <p>It was also revealed Fergie was invited to stay at the Queen's Scottish retreat this summer as well.</p> <p>‘Sarah Ferguson is coming,' the source said. 'She will be here with Andrew.' It's not clear whether Fergie and Andrew will be joined by their daughters, Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie.</p> <p><strong><img style="width: 500px; height: 281.10047846889955px;" src="https://oversixtydev.blob.core.windows.net/media/7843650/prince-philip-and-queen-um.jpg" alt="" data-udi="umb://media/ea6723b72c024dc5904081bbe490f301" /></strong></p> <p><strong>No doubt this holiday will be bittersweet</strong></p> <p>The stay at Balmoral will no doubt be bittersweet for the Queen, who has many fond memories of her time spent at the estate with her late husband.</p> <p>While never truly off duty it was the closest the Queen and Prince Philip would come to a real holiday.</p> <p>There have been reports of raucous, drink-fuelled evenings and jovial house parties, and quiet days with old-fashioned parlour games by the fire.</p> <p>In April, the Queen released a very special photograph of herself and Prince Philip in the hills near Balmoral, giving us another special insight into how much they enjoyed their time at the estate.</p> <p><em>Image: Instagram</em></p>

Meghan Markle releases rare statement about Archie

Duchess of Cambridge reveals the one celebrity who leaves her starstruck

Touching moment 90-year-old superfan kisses the Duchess of Cambridge’s hand

Royal carpool! Cambridge family roll up for Queen’s Christmas lunch

<p>Prince Andrew has joined the Queen and the rest of the royal family for a pre-Christmas lunch at Buckingham Palace.</p> <p>The Duke of York was seen driving into Buckingham Palace on Wednesday after what one may describe as a rough few weeks that saw him stripped of his royal duties due to his friendship with convicted paedophile Jeffrey Epstein.</p> <p>The Prince made an effort to clear his name by appearing in a<span> </span><em>Newsnight</em><span> </span>interview, but it completely backfired after he failed to express support for the victims.</p> <p>Also in attendance was the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge along with their three children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.</p> <p>Kate was in the holiday spirit as she sported a tartan outfit, while Prince Louis had visibly longer hair than his most recent public appearance.</p> <p>Prince Charles was also spotted driving in for what would most likely be a tense encounter after it was revealed that he had been the driving force into Andrew stepping down.</p> <p>Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie as well as Princess Anne, Vice Admiral Sir Tim Laurence, Mike and Zara Tindall were in attendance.</p>

The flight alone is said to have costed approximately AU$36,000 (NZD$38,000). </p> <p>Media outlets and critical members of the public took turns lambasting the new royal parents for their four flights on private jets in two weeks, in the wake of Prince Harry’s recent climate change comments. </p> <p>The retaliation involved a number of high profile figures coming to the defense of the royal’s including Elton John, Ellen DeGeneres and Pink. </p> <p>John and a close friend both said Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan both flew private for security purposes - a claim which may not hold up to some considering the second and third-in-line-to-the-throne were photographed doing the opposite. </p> <p>However,<span> </span>ITV’s<span> </span>royal editor, Chris Ship suggests the photos of the Cambridge family just confirms all the more that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex made a wise decision. </p> <p>"The Royals are always at risk of having their privacy invaded by camera phones in the hands of other passengers," Ship wrote about the pictures taken by those on-board.</p> <p>"A smarter interpretation might be this: these images - which first found their way onto the Mail Online - support Harry and Meghan's decision to accept offers of private jets to protect the privacy they so crave when they're not on duty."</p>

How the Duchess of Cambridge celebrated her 36th birthday

<p><span>The Duchess of Cambridge was able to start her week by seeing Princess Charlotte off on her first day at nursery and snapping a few images of </span><a href="http://www.oversixty.com.au/entertainment/art/2018/01/princess-charlotte-starts-first-day-of-pre-school/" target="_blank"><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">her little girl on the milestone day.</span></strong></a></p> <p><span>Now, the festivities have continued as Kate, who is pregnant with her third child, is celebrating her 36th birthday privately at Kensington Palace.</span></p> <p><span>She is believed to be spending her special day with a party of eight before officially resuming her royal duties tomorrow.</span></p> <p><span>The party is believed to include Prince Harry and his fiancee Meghan Markle, who have just become neighbours of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge after officially moving into Harry’s Nottingham Cottage.</span></p> <p><span>A Kensington Palace spokesperson confirmed Kate was celebrating “privately” while an insider told the Daily Star Online, “Catherine has got a small birthday party of eight today."</span></p> <p><span>They added, “But she is not drinking any alcohol and she is being careful with her food too. It will be quite a low-key party.”</span></p> <p><span>It is also expected that her sister Pippa and brother-in-law James will be celebrating her birthday with her.</span></p> <p><span>Kate has just returned from Sandringham after enjoying an extended Christmas break with the royal family.</span></p> <p><span>On Monday, Princess Charlotte attended her first day at Willcocks Nursery School.</span></p> <p><span>The two-year-old, who is fourth in line to the throne, is attending a different nursery school to Prince George.</span></p> <p><span>George attended Westacre Montessori School due to its closeness to Anmer Hall, where the family were previously based. </span></p>

Duchess of Cambridge shows off growing baby bump

<p>The Duke and Duchess, currently expecting their third child, were all smiles as they hit the soccer field yesterday, with Kate showing off her growing baby bump and that pregnancy glow to match.</p> <p>The royal couple started their adventurous day of duties by taking an off-road ride in a Land Rover at a factory in Birmingham, where they met with mountain rescue workers running training exercises with the vehicles.</p> <p>And just look at the grin on Prince William’s face – he was clearly enjoying himself!</p> <p><img width="600" height="295" src="https://oversixtydev.blob.core.windows.net/media/7264717/lr_600x295.jpg" alt="LR" style="display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"/></p> <p>The parents-of-two then headed to Aston Villa’s soccer ground – yet another exciting experience for William, who has been a lifelong supporter of the team and last visited the stadium to watch a game four years ago.</p> <p>“Welcome back to the home of one of your husband’s other passions,” Aston Villa CEO Keith Wyness greeted Kate, to which she replied, “Yes, he’s very excited by it!”</p> <p>All eyes, however, were on the Duchess’ burgeoning bump, which she highlighted in a casual all-black outfit with a red puffer jacket. To see the exciting pics, <strong>scroll through the gallery above</strong>.</p>
