Canberra takes out bronze in worldwide healthy city rankings

Drones are now delivering groceries in Canberra – how does it work?

Major Australian supermarket Coles yesterday announced the launch of its partnership with drone delivery service Wing to bring drone-delivered groceries to customers in Canberra.

The battery-powered drones have a one-metre wingspan, weigh about 4.8 kilograms, and are equipped with both fixed wings and hover propellers, allowing them to behave as miniature versions of both aeroplanes and helicopters. They can travel at speeds of more than 110 km/h and carry packages of up to 1.2 kilograms.

According to Simon Rossi, General Manager at Wing Australia, the drones typically require less energy to make a delivery than a kettle does to boil.

So how does drone delivery work?

Products can be ordered using the Wing app. Coles is currently offering delivery of more than 250 of its most popular grocery items, including bread, fresh produce, healthcare items, and toilet paper.

When the order is received, the products are packed and loaded onto a drone, which ascends to its flying altitude of about 45 metres above ground and sets off for the delivery location. The drone will follow a route planned by Wing’s unmanned traffic management (UTM) software.

“The aircraft automatically monitors its systems to make sure it is safe to fly and will prevent take-off or automatically take contingency actions if a problem is detected,” Rossi explains.

“Our trained remote aircraft pilots oversee everything to make sure the system is operating smoothly.”

Once arrived, the drone descends to its delivery height of about seven metres above ground and hovers as it lowers the package to the ground on a tether. The package is automatically released, and the drone returns to the delivery facility.

Customers can track the progress of their delivery on the Wing app. According to Wing, the company’s fastest delivery time to date is two minutes and 47 seconds from order to delivery.

Is drone delivery catching on?

Wing has existing drone delivery partnerships with several businesses in both Canberra and Logan, Queensland. The service also has a presence in the US and Finland.

According to Rossi, the company completed more than 100,000 drone deliveries in Australia in 2021, and 30,000 in the first two months of 2022.

Early feedback from customers on the partnership with Coles in Canberra has been positive, he says.

“Customers are ordering a range of items including pantry staples like bread, eggs, and milk, fresh produce and convenience meals, as well as health care items like over-the-counter cough medicine and bandages.”

Are there any risks to drone delivery?

Adding large numbers of unmanned flying machines to the air would seem to have the potential to be disruptive.

“Perhaps Wing’s most interesting feature is its airspace integration and deconfliction,” says Pauline Pounds, an associate professor in information technology and electrical engineering at the University of Queensland.

“Balancing the needs of CASA [the Civil Aviation Safety Authority], commercial aviation operators and other drone operators requires some care.”

Because they fly in a zone between ‘ground clutter’ and manned aviation traffic, the drones are likely to remain comparatively safe. This also helps explain why flying drones are increasingly integrated into our everyday lives, while driverless cars languish on the sidelines.

“It’s far easier to build a robot to fly in clear air where obstacles are rare, rather than on roads where pedestrians and human drivers may behave erratically,” says Pounds.

However, the drones’ airspace won’t be completely risk-free.

“A collision between a drone and a bird is unlikely to be a pleasant experience for either,” Pounds admits.

Is drone delivery the future of grocery shopping?

Unfortunately, a drone can’t yet do your entire weekly grocery shop for you, and Rossi emphasises that this isn’t the service’s intention.

“Rather, it is to enable customers to quickly order small grocery and convenience items, coffees, and snacks which they may need in a hurry,” he says.

But could it be done one day?

“Scaling drones to carry heavier payloads is a fundamental challenge: the more the drone carries, the shorter its flight will be,” says Pounds.

“Drones are optimised for specific payload-range characteristics. Improving performance requires more energy-dense batteries, more efficient propulsion systems; the same limitations that hold back flying cars.

“However, a distributed network of mini-aerodromes allowing packages to make many short hops – like a drone ‘Pony Express’ – could allow these systems to scale without limit, much like mobile phone base station cells.”

Coles frames the new partnership with Wing as part of its strategy to become Australia’s most sustainable supermarket, as drone delivery options could reduce the need for cars and trucks.

Wing also emphasise their green credentials, describing drone delivery as “one of the fastest, safest and most environmentally friendly modes of delivering goods when compared to a truck or car”.

But with the drones only able to carry a kilo or two, would environmentally-conscious supermarkets be better off investing in electric cars and trucks instead?

“Flying is innately energy-intensive and will always be more demanding than a comparable electric vehicle rolling the same distance, but drones fly directly point to point and do not require detours or stop at traffic lights,” says Pounds.

“However, both drones and wheeled electric vehicles also have differing manufacturing, maintenance and disposal costs; whether autonomous cars or drones turn out to be more energy efficient over their lifetimes has yet to be seen.”

This article was originally published on Cosmos Magazine and was written by Matilda Handsley-Davis. Two of the coolest places for a short break

Coolest? We don’t mean climate, otherwise we’d be talking about Australia’s High Country and snowfields — depending on the time of year. Or, our wonderful Tassie.

No, there’s the more modern meaning of “coolness” — not exactly favoured by those of us who grew up before the ‘60s, when “cool, man” was the statutory ending to every sentence.

So, Canberra? Orange? How do they qualify?

Each boasts unique attractions which make them a great place for a short break. And, while already easily accessible from Sydney by train, plane or car, Tigerair now offers direct flights from Melbourne and Brisbane to both regional cities.

Of course, there’s a huge difference between the nation’s capital and a regional city, but there are similarities as well.

The common defining factor may well have something to do with fresh country air, great regional produce and wine, a range of activities from very active to quite passive, and simply a surprising “vibe” — to use another of those ‘60s words that have crept into our language.

Let’s see what each city has in store:

Canberra

If you’ve thought of Canberra as a place for “serious” tourism — Federal Parliament, the Australian War Memorial, the National Gallery, and so on — you’d be right. Those places should be high on every Australian’s bucket list.

But you’d only be half-right. There’s another side to the city, which is attracting a new wave of visitors looking for fun, excitement, good food and wine — and lots of activities that will keep you busy with Facebook or Instagram posts for everyone back home to see. It's no wonder it's been ranked the third best city in Lonely Planet's Best in Travel 2018.

For example, hot air ballooning on a frosty winter morning is one way to get the pulse racing. It may sound a bit nerve-racking, but ballooning is statistically safer than driving down the street and it’s a lot more fun. In the hands of experienced operators such as Balloon Aloft, you get a wonderful bird’s eye view of the city and the picturesque countryside — a joyflight you won’t easily forget.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Em (@_capitalgirl) on Mar 11, 2018 at 3:09pm PDT

Ballooning is just for starters. Our favourite is the Giraffe Treehouse where you can feed the handsome Humbekhali from your balcony.

Take a Segway tour around Lake Burley Griffin — it certainly beats walking and the guides give an amusing commentary.

Try your hand at glass blowing at Canberra Glassworks, a unique workspace for glass artists where visitors can get arty and make a glass paperweight under the patient guidance of a professional artist.

Visit the new Capital Brewing Company in Fyshwick, an industrial area fast becoming a trendy urban precinct. Enjoy superb craft beers, and tasty food from the famous Brodburger food truck.

Spend an hour (or three!) at one of many wineries in the district. The closest to town is Mount Majura Vineyard and if you’re anything like us, you’ll want more than a sip of their excellent Tempranillo.

Dine at one of Canberra’s hot eateries like Italian and Sons, ONA Manuka for great locally roasted coffee, or Pialligo Estate on the banks of the Molonglo River which incorporates a vineyard, olive grove, market garden and smokehouse for a true gourmet dining experience.

Book well ahead for Floriade in September 2019 — one of Australia’s premier flower and garden shows, now in its 32nd year.

Orange

Many may remember the motor events of the past, at the Gnoo Blas car races, which set out to rival Bathurst’s Mount Panorama circuit with famous drivers like Jack Brabham and Bob Jane competing.

Today, motor events have given way to food, wine, art, and music festivals, attracting a very different kind of visitor. In addition to the usual procession of Sydneysiders and interstate grey nomads in shiny rigs, direct flights from Brisbane and Melbourne are bringing trendier lifestylers seeking new pastures for grazing and graping.

Regional wine is at the forefront of the “New Orange”. This is made apparent by a visit to the Orange Wine Festival, showcasing a huge selection of cool climate varieties from mainly family-owned boutique wineries.

The emphasis here is on high quality, limited production, with altitude the key defining attribute, along with the usual variables of terroir: geology, soils, climate, and temperature.

According to Justin Jarrett, President of the Orange Region Vignerons Association, the annual Wine Festival has had extraordinary success since it started in 1999; it now runs over ten days and last year’s attendance topped 23,000. That’s a lot of sips at the various venues, translating to the sellout of many vintages on offer. The bubblies were a particular favourite, encouraging the plantings of more grapes for Prosecco — popular with the Surry Hills and Carlton crowd.

But the city offers more than wine, of course. The foodie scene in Orange and nearby Millthorpe has been recognised with several Chef’s Hats, and top reviews at places like Charred, the Agrestic Grocer, and The Greenhouse in town; and Tonic, the Old Mill, and Le Billot de Boucher in the quaint Millthorpe village.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by The Agrestic Grocer (@agrestic_grocer) on Jan 11, 2019 at 2:24am PST

To top it off, there’s the Origin Organic Chocolate factory where you can make your own bespoke chocolate in a Masterclass, and pair it with local wine, beer, and cheese.

The ideal road trip

Perhaps the perfect way to spend a week or so would be to combine visits to Canberra and Orange in a single road trip — they’re less than four hours apart by car if you don’t dally along the way.

But then, you’d miss some beautiful country scenery and some excellent coffee stops. Canberra café surprises burglar with hilarious note

The staff at Niugini Arabica in Canberra had the last laugh after leaving a note inside their cash register after repeat burglaries.

The café has been targeted before, so knowing that thieves would return to their shop, staff took the cash from the register before locking up for the day and replaced it with post-it-notes that read, “HAHA No Money” and “F**k you”.

On March 20, the thieves returned with security footage showing three men wearing hoods break the glass before entering and rummaging through the store.

The thieves found the cash register open with the notes and then left with a couple bags of coffee beans and a mobile phone.

“Apart from stealing the work mobile phone, the thieves managed to walk right past the tip jar and get away with 2kg of our finest single origin roasted beans,” staff shared.

“At least they have great taste in coffee.”

Last Tuesday, the ACT Police attended the café and investigations are ongoing.

It is not the first time Niugini Arabica enjoyed outsmarting thieves.

On a previous occasion, a man used an axe to break in but only left with a first-aid bandage.

The CCTV footage of the break in was paired with the Benny Hill soundtrack and commentary from owner Theodore Levantis’ son, who used it for a school assignment.

Canberra cat spotted chasing kangaroo

A feisty feline from our nation’s capital has become quite the sensation after footage was released of him chasing after a kangaroo. Bailey, a domestic short-hair, has a reputation around Canberra for her decidedly dog-like behaviour, patrolling the neighbourhood and chasing after other animals – just like a good guard-cat should!

“He does patrol the neighbourhood, he goes around the houses,” Bailey’s owner Ann Connell told 9News. “When someone rings the doorbell, he gets up and runs to the door and growls. There’s a guy who delivers community papers, Bailey follows him around every house, and when he gets to my letterbox (the cat) stands in front of him and growls.”

The curious kitty has even taken on somewhat of a protective role towards his canine brother and Ann’s grandchildren. And, after watching the video above, we don’t think we’d want to get on his bad side!

Tell us in the comments below, do you have a pet that thinks they’re another animal?

Related links:

Is this cat walking up or down the stairs?

Ginger cat spends nine years running a store

Meet Samson, the biggest cat in the world

Franklin the sheepdog has roamed a town in Australia for three years

A mysterious shaggy stray dog named Franklin, who has roamed the streets of a small Canberra suburb in Australia for at least three years, has become a celebrity.

The Maremma Sheepdog has apparently been freely walking the streets of Gungahlin for years, finding food from regularly gifted bones and treats by locals and a woman who feeds him on his daily visits to her house.

The big white shaggy dog even has his own Facebook fan page, where locals frequently post sightings of the elusive canine. Franklin has been dubbed the “Ghost Dog” due to his snowy-white coat, sudden random appearances and elusiveness

A group of locals who regularly interact with Franklin say he generally likes to keep to himself but wouldn’t hurt a fly. However, residents of the town are debating whether Franklin should be left alone or if he does need to be caught and re-homed. The RSPCA said they have not had any complaints about the welfare of the dog.

Mark Scarborough, who started Franklin’s Facebook page after sighting him a few times three years ago, says Franklin was adopted from the pound by a family three years ago, but escaped when brought home. He was briefly recaptured, but ran away again and has been on the loose ever since.

“The ACT Rangers have all but given up trying to catch Franklin as he is too elusive. Others have also tried without success,” said Scarborough.

“We have discussed Franklin with RSPCA and they have advised that the best thing we can do is to leave Franklin alone.”

While Scarborough is worried about Franklin’s health in the “wild”, he said he wasn’t sure forcing a roof over Franklin’s head was necessarily the answer.

"People say he needs a home, but does he?” Scarborough says, “Does he need cuddles and pats and to sleep on a bed every night? Are we romanticising that?

"From what I've seen of him, he does look happy."

Scroll on the gallery above to catch a glimpse of Franklin's adeventures. To find out more, visit Franklin's Facebook page here.

Related links:

10 quotes dog lovers will enjoy

Then and now: portraits of dogs from puppyhood to old age

Dogs can spot liars and will disregard them
