Never-before-seen party photo of Kate Middleton surfaces

A previously unseen photo of Kate Middleton has been posted to social media by one of her old university friends.

Laura Warshaur - who was in the same halls as the royal - shared the photo to Instagram and reminisced their "lovely" college years together at St Andrews.

She captioned the photo: “Sending love to Kate Middleton, the future Queen of England and my university dormmate!

“This was us at a Hope Street flat party. I have the loveliest college memories with Kate.

“She is the kindest, most caring, down-to-earth, genuine person, and it’s incredible to see her shining so brightly and inspiring the world with her compassion and courage.”

The Princess of Wales was snapped wearing a cream turtleneck jumper with minimal makeup and her natural curls flowing.

The picture taken at a flat party on Hope Street, was also where the Prince and Princess of Wales lived in their second year, according to The Sun.

In the photo the Princess and Laura smiled for the camera as they held up brownie bites.

Laura shared the photo on her Instagram a while back to show support for the Princess of Wales as she continued her cancer treatment.

The image caught the attention of royal fans this week, who took to comments to share their delight.

“Neither of you has changed much, so gorgeous. So happy to see her out and about again with that big smile,” commented one user.

“How sweet your tribute to her back when she was diagnosed. And how beautiful you both are in this picture," added another.

“No way, most unexpected duo EVER," commented a third.

Laura, who has since lost touch with the royal couple, previously revealed that all their friends rooted for the royal couple and believed that they would end up together.

Image: Instagram

"I’m coming home from a party, and I don’t want to end up getting arrested": do driving apps help people break road rules?

Verity Truelove, University of the Sunshine Coast; Michelle Nicolls, University of the Sunshine Coast, and Oscar Oviedo-Trespalacios, Delft University of Technology

Apps such as Google Maps, Apple Maps and Waze can tell drivers when they are approaching speed cameras or random breath testing stations. Countries such as Germany, France and Switzerland have banned apps from displaying these enforcement locations.

But what effect are these apps having in Australia – are they helping drivers break road rules?

Our new paper, published in the journal Safety Science, examined this question.

We found this technology can, in some cases, contribute to people thinking they are invincible on the roads. However, we also found they can sometimes help people drive more safely.

Being made aware of enforcement can help road safety

We conducted focus groups and interviews with a total of 58 drivers from Queensland, to understand how the use of this technology influences perceptions of being caught for breaking road rules.

One driver told us: "If I know it’s coming up, I’ll put my phone down. If I was, say, texting or checking something, but then like once a good few 100 metres away, I sort of pick it up again, depending though."

Another said: "It sort of depends where I am driving, I guess. Like, if I am driving on a country road and there is a speed camera there I would probably slow down for the speed camera and then sort of speed up again once I am sort of past that; it sort of depends on the circumstances."

We also found that, for some people, being made aware of enforcement locations can help drivers better regulate their speed. This helped them comply with road rules more consistently.

Waze also shows the speed limit in the area, which further assisted some drivers to stick to the speed limit. One driver told us: "I’m a bit careful if I just look at the speedo and just double check that I’m on the right amount of speed."

Another said: "It just gives you a warning like, ‘OK, you need to check your speed.’ Just to double-check you’re going on the right speed perhaps or when it’s a camera coming up."

Concerning behaviours

Concerningly, we also found some drivers who use these apps are looking at and touching their screens more than they otherwise would. This can distract drivers and increase their risk of crashing.

One driver told us they post traffic updates on the app they use while driving, “which I know is wrong.”

Another said: "Just hit the button on the phone. Just two steps after I go past the camera."

Another driver told us: "It’s so helpful […] Especially if it’s, say, late night and I’m coming home from a party, and I don’t want to end up getting arrested."

One driver said: "I probably feel slightly more invincible, which is probably not a good thing."

When asked why these apps are used, one driver said: "I guess the drug and the drink-driving."

Apps can help and hinder road safety

We know breaking road rules significantly contributes to crashes and road fatalities, with deaths on Australian roads continuing to increase over time.

On the one hand, when drivers are aware of enforcement measures like cameras and police, they are more likely to stop breaking the rules in those areas. That’s particularly true for behaviours such as speeding and using a phone while driving, we found.

Using apps that flag where cameras and police are located also means drivers would be more exposed to enforcement activities than they otherwise would be on a normal drive.

On the other hand, our results suggest some drivers are using these applications to break road rules more often in places where they think they won’t be caught.

These apps are also not always completely accurate.

For instance, even though Waze can display some police operation locations such as roadside breath testing, it can’t capture all on-road police activities. Further, camera locations are not always up to date or accurate.

Weighing benefits against risks

While these apps do have some benefits, it’s important to weigh these against the risks.

It’s also important to recognise traffic enforcement isn’t just there to make you comply with road rules at a specific point; it is meant to remind you of the constant risk of being caught and to encourage consistent rule compliance.

The goal is to ensure that drivers are following the traffic rules across the entire network, not just in isolated spots.

With road fatalities at some of the highest rates we’ve seen in recent years, we need everyone to work together to stop more preventable deaths and injuries.

Verity Truelove, Senior Research Fellow in Road Safety Research, University of the Sunshine Coast; Michelle Nicolls, PhD Candidate, University of the Sunshine Coast, and Oscar Oviedo-Trespalacios, A/Professor Responsible Risk Management, Delft University of Technology

This article is republished from The Conversation under a Creative Commons license. Readers response: What’s your most memorable birthday party?

One of the best parts of birthdays is celebrating with your loved ones, whether it's a milestone birthday or not.

We asked our readers to share the stories from their most memorable birthday parties, and the response was overwhelming. Here's what they said.

Jill Harker - My 80th birthday last November! My family organised it! Had no idea who was coming! I'm a big Elvis fan and when I got to the hotel for lunch everybody was holding up an Elvis face in front of their face so I still had no idea who was there! When they took the faces down there were all my family from Queensland including grandchildren and great grandchildren! Plus my 2 sons organised a birthday video message from Tex Walker my favourite footballer! Plus my granddaughter organised a ride in a Cadillac for me! So many wonderful surprises! It was fantastic!

Judi Baker - My 21st. My Mum and Dad were there. Plus my late Mum's 70th and 80th. Both so funny.

Annette Guernier Clay - In 2007 when two good friends and I celebrated our 60th birthdays with a party at the old Cairns Yacht Club. Live band, lots of dancing, loads of friends.

Lesley Peacock - My 21st, as it was the only one I had.

Christine Whyte - Never had children’s birthday party as mine was always with immediate family, but had a memorable 70th last year with my family and 3 grandkids in Townsville.

Barbara Jaramenko - Didn’t have one as there was no money, but just had a homemade birthday cake with siblings which was lovely.

Margie Buckingham - On my 40th, I was a single mum and I held a combined party- my 40th, end of 3rd term (teacher) & taking leave service leave, the Parliamentary election & going overseas! I took a cruise from Singapore for a week, beginning with a Singapore Gin Sling in the Long Bar at the Raffles Hotel. that was pretty memorable.

Woman “bullied” on plane over budget seating trick

A young woman has recalled a flight from hell when she was “bullied” by a couple who were trying to utilise a seating hack that went viral on TikTok.

The solo traveller took to Reddit to recount the story and ask social media users if she was in the wrong for her action.

The woman began by saying she usually pays more to select her plane seat ahead of time, but a medical emergency on another plane had her waiting on standby and left with no option other than to sit in a middle seat.

When she was finally able to board, she was greeted by a couple who had purchased both the window and aisle seats in a bid to have more space, utilising a travel “trick” that has been popular on TikTok.

The method, which has been dubbed the 'poor man's business class', usually leaves travellers with an empty middle seat and more space, and few travellers opt to pick a middle seat.

“When I got to my row the man and woman were chatting and sharing a snack... it was obvious they were together. I mentioned to the man that I'm in the middle, and he got up to let me in,” the unsuspecting traveller wrote on Reddit.

“I asked them if they would prefer to sit together, I said I was totally okay with that. The woman reacted rudely to this and said ‘you're not supposed to be sitting here anyway’.”

After noticing how the plane was full, she offered to show the pair her new ticket with the correct seat number on it.

“She flicked her hand at my ticket and made a disgusted sound. I offered again if they wanted to sit together to which she didn't reply, her partner said it's okay and... made some small talk,” she continued.

The man’s girlfriend then interrupted their conversation to ask,”'Did you use one of those third party websites to book your flight? It's so frustrating when people cheap out to inconvenience others.”

The American woman explained that she had booked her flight directly and she had been placed on standby like everyone else and didn't choose the middle seat - she was assigned it.

She then tried to keep the peace by refusing to engage with the furious woman.

“I was so done with her attitude, I put my headphones on and attempted to do my own thing,” she explained.

But the “entitled” girlfriend wasn't letting it go, as the woman explained, “This woman kept reaching over me and tapping her partner and trying to talk to him in a way that was super intrusive.”

“I could tell even her partner was trying to engage her less so that she would hopefully stop, but she didn't.”

“I think they tried to pull that tactic where they don't sit together on purpose...hoping no one will sit between them. But on full flights it doesn't work. And even so - it's not the other person's fault.”

The traveller's post was met with hundreds of comments slamming the girlfriend’s behaviour, as one person wrote, “It's like a toddler having a tantrum.”

“She was disappointed and a total a**hole. Gross entitled people,” another added.

Another person applauded the traveller’s level-headed behaviour, writing, “Wow! You are my hero for keeping it classy - I’m afraid I would not have been as kind as you.”

Two young fundraising heroes treated to private party at Buckingham Palace

Two fundraising heroes have been treated to a private tea party, hosted by Queen Camilla herself, after being forced to miss previous royal events.

Tony Hudgell, nine, and Lyla O’Donovan, 11, were due to attend a garden party in May, but Hudgell got stuck in a major traffic jam, while Lyla was undergoing treatment for cancer.

Tony — whose legs were amputated after horrific child abuse - was devastated to miss the royal event, as his adoptive mother Paula shared on X (formerly Twitter) how they spent two hours stuck behind a fire truck on a major highway.

However, a response on the Royal Family indicated all was not lost, as they replied, “Sorry to hear this, Tony! We were looking forward to seeing you too. Fancy trying again another day? Leave it with us.”

Two months on, the two youngsters arrived at Buckingham Palace for the rescheduled treat last week and were given a front-row spot to watch the Changing of the Guard.

The two children and their families then enjoyed a private tea party with Queen Camilla, 76, in the palace garden’s Summer House.

🫖 🍰 When Tony and Lyla came to tea … pic.twitter.com/LTfLrPDjT7

— The Royal Family (@RoyalFamily) July 1, 2024

The Queen then presented Tony with his British Empire Medal after his nomination in the 2024 New Year’s Honours.

Tony, who lost his legs as a baby due to his parents’ cruelty, inspired the nation after doing a 10km walk, raising $2.4 million at age five.

Paula said, “We were all extremely honoured and grateful to be invited for afternoon tea with the Queen. Everyone was so kind and thoughtful and made us feel comfortable and relaxed."

“Tony chatted to the Queen as if they were old friends. She was lovely with him.

“An exceptionally proud moment was when the Queen gave Tony his BEM. It was one of the most memorable days we’ll ever have.”

Lyla has raised funds to grant wishes to children affected by cancer or lifelong illness. She said of the event, “Everyone made us feel so comfortable and made me feel super-special. We’re so grateful.”

Dad Paul said, “It was an amazing moment for us. Lyla was gutted about missing the original Garden Party but she said she’s glad she missed it now as she’s got to meet the Queen."

“There’s no one more important than her, apart from the King, of course.”

Image credits: Buckingham Palace/WPA Pool/Shutterstock Editorial

Morbid reason why cruise ships throw "free ice cream parties" on board

Dara Starr Tucker, a former cruise ship employee has shared the morbid reason why they throw “free ice cream parties” on board.

Tucker, a singer who spent six months living on a cruise ship in the Mediterranean and the Caribbean 10 years ago, shared what life was like at sea.

In one of her latest videos, she answered one of her follower's question asking whether it was true that if cruise staff started giving away ice cream, it meant that they needed more freezer space for a body.

“This is unfortunately often true,” she said.

“If the crew suddenly makes a bunch of ice cream available to passengers, ‘Free ice cream party’, it is often because more people have died on the ship than they have room for in the morgue.”

She said that most large ships are legally required to maintain a morgue and carry body bags in the event a passenger dies mid-journey and added that she “thankfully” didn't have to deal with the "morbid stuff".

“But we were friends with some crew members who did deal with it and they said maybe four to 10 people die every cruise,” she claimed.

“There are a lot of older people on ships, and often (out of) a ship that carried maybe 2500 to 3000 passengers on a typical cruise, four to 10 people would die.

“So the morgue, I believe they said held about seven people, and if more than seven people died on that particular ship, they would have to start moving bodies to the freezer.”

She claimed that if employees would have to "make room for the extra bodies" in the freezer, they would have to take out everything including ice cream.

Her video has been viewed over 2.3 million times, with many other cruise ship employees confirming her claims.

“Cruise ship medic here. Can confirm the morgue and ice cream correlation,” one said.

“Former sailor here — yes, it is accurate. Sometimes space needs to be made in the freezer," another added.

Image: TikTok

"You've restored my faith": Community shows up for lonely birthday boy

One dad's desperate plea has "restored" his faith after his local community showed up for his son's third birthday party.

Pre-schooler William Buck and his dad Steven sat patiently on a beach in Wellington, waiting for his friends to arrive and begin the celebrations for his third birthday party.

As time passed, William and his dad grew more hopeless, and they worried about the fate of the celebrations.

"He kept asking where everyone was, and we were like 'they’re coming soon'," Steven Buck told Stuff.

Steven felt "guilty" that none of his son's mates had come to the party, especially given how excited his son had been for this birthday, as he had been talking about the celebration for weeks.

In a last ditch effort to make William's day special, Steven turned to social media for help.

Steven posted an image of the pair online and invited any locals wanting "some sun and sand" to join them.

"William would love some friends to play with. He has Hot Wheels, sand toys, dinos, and we have some snacks and drinks. Any and all welcome," he wrote.

Amazingly, locals responded in their thousands, wishing William a 'Happy Birthday' while many others joined the three-year-old and his parents.

"Going there. See you soon," one local wrote, before arriving with her family.

The partygoers arrived with bubbles and inflatables, parking themselves down on beach chairs ready to celebrate the sunny day with William.

"Thank you so much everyone for the birthday wishes and support," Steven wrote online after the day. "Wellington you always restore my faith in humanity!"

Hunt for Cinderella! Mystery shoe left at Prince Christian's party sparks search

"Cutest thing ever": Bride and groom praised for breaking wedding tradition

A bride and groom have been praised online for deviating from the traditional wedding party to include their siblings in an adorable way.

Carla Wehbe took to TikTok to share a video from her cousin Raymond's nuptials to his partner Bella, in which both the bride and groom wanted their siblings standing next to them on their big day.

Raymond had his sister wear a black dress, to match his groomsmen in their black tuxedos, and be given the title best woman.

In contrast, Bella’s brother was given a pink suit to match the pink dresses of the other bridesmaids and was given the title man of honour.

“The reason they did it was because their siblings were their best friends and they wanted them to stand by their side on their special day,” Wehbe said in an interview with Newsweek. “I loved the idea and thought it made the day really special.”

The video has racked up over 65 million views, with thousands of people flocking to the comments to congratulate the newlywed couple, while praising their decision to break with tradition.

“This needs to be done more often,” one comment read.

However, not all of the commenters were on board with the idea, while many traditionalists slammed the act.

Despite the critcs, Wehbe said most of the comments were positive, and that she wanted to use the video to let people know that they can have any kind of wedding they want, whether it breaks tradition or not.

“It will definitely inspire people who may have wanted to but were not sure if it was acceptable,” she said. “People should just do what makes them happy on their special day!”

“You deserve more”: Company slammed over measly send-off party

A company has been slammed online for their measly attempt to farewell a hard-working employee of 42 years.

John Barlett was a dedicated worker for four decades, commuting long distances to work at minimum wage and give his all to his colleagues.

After 42 years of hard work, John announced his retirement from the company, prompting a measly farewell party from his place of work.

One of John’s longtime co-worker, Sonia, was devastated over the injustice, sharing a short clip to social media of John – now in his 70s – and what she felt was his hard work going unappreciated.

“Today is my co-worker’s last day. He worked for this company for 42 years making minimum wage,” Sonia wrote with the video.

“The company only threw him a barbecue and gave him a certificate. He takes the bus and Bart (train) to get here every day on time. He’s 70+.”

“He loves working here so much he didn’t want to retire. [He got] No bonus, just a barbecue and a certificate. Don’t be a slave to your job. Thank you John for your loyalty.”

The video quickly went viral and was flooded with comments of support for John, with one person even suggesting that John start a GoFundMe for people to contribute to his retirement.

In the fundraiser, she revealed John could not drive because of a disability, but “rain or shine” would always make it to work.

He was “extremely dependable”, Sonia added, revealing it had been difficult to convince him to take a break because he always wanted to work.

He was “one of the most talented and hard working” employees at the company and his energy was “unmatched”, she said.

“He has no wife or kids, however he does have a nephew whom he loves dearly,” she wrote in the fundraiser.

“It would be nice to give him some kind of company or something to do so he knows that he’s special and loved.”

In the few days since the GoFundMe was created, it has raised almost $45,000, as many shared their comments of support.

One person wrote, “Happy retirement, John. You deserve more than what this company has offered you. Wish you all the best in your life and your future.”

How 1920s high society fashion pushed gender boundaries through ‘freaking’ parties

Dominic Janes, Keele University

The 1920s brought about a rise in androgynous fashion among a high society set that broke boundaries and caused controversy. This drew on a subculture that had existed for decades, perhaps centuries, but after the first world war gender-bending fashions became front page news.

It was a time of upheaval. Established regimes were toppling across Europe. In Britain, women over 30 had finally been given the vote and there was widespread concern about the new hedonism of their younger “flapper” sisters.

There was also a new market for novels, such as Radcylffe Hall’s banned book The Well of Loneliness (1928) that focused on, rather than merely hinted at, queer lives. Daring male university students started wearing makeup. One of these was Cecil Beaton, the future celebrity photographer, who delighted in cross-dressing both on stage and off.

Beaton became part of a set of high society socialites who were known as the “bright young things”. They were often socially privileged, many of them were queer and their antics were widely followed in the media with a mixture of horror and fascination.

The “things” took partying seriously and paid great attention to their outfits. They dressed to transgress. In 1920, high society magazine The Sketch reported that what it termed “freak parties” were suddenly in vogue with the younger set.

Before the war, articles had appeared condemning unusual styles as “freak fashions”, but suddenly “freaking” was all the rage.

Until this point, menswear had been heavily circumscribed. Black was the default colour for formal occasions and tweed for informal settings. But suddenly there was a circle who were keen to try out new looks, no matter how bizarre – or queer-looking – the results.

Queer parties, queer fashions

These styles were often worn as fancy dress, but they borrowed looks from marginalised queer communities such as feminine-styled queer men, some of whom made a living by selling sexual services.

One such man was Quentin Crisp, whose memoir The Naked Civil Servant (1968) was dramatised as a pioneering TV drama.

Another source of inspiration was the freak show. These displays, horrifying from a 21st century point of view, were a popular element of circuses at the time. They featured such stock characters as the muscled giant and the bearded lady, some of whom became celebrities in their own right.

Masquerade and fancy dress parties had long been a feature of urban social life, but the bright young things innovated in that they impressed less through the expense of their outfits and more through their queer implications.

Many such parties were themed, such as a Greek-themed freak party that was hailed as the greatest “Dionysia” of 1929 (Dionysus being the Greek god of sex and pleasure). Androgynous and cross dressing looks were common and men such as Beaton designed their own frocks.

In July 1927, one magazine declared that an event attended by Beaton’s friend Stephen Tennant dressed as the Queen of Sheba and bisexual actress Tallulah Bankhead dressed as a male tennis star was: “one of the queerest of all the ‘freak’ parties ever given in London”.

The party’s over

The Wall Street crash of 1929 led to a rapid shift in public mood. Economic recession led people to favour sobriety over flamboyance. Money for the parties ran out and media attention faltered.

Gender-bending style vanished from the fashionable arena, although it persisted on inner cities streets. Quentin Crisp’s mode of queer dandyism was daring for its time, but it only became extraordinary by virtue of his unwillingness to modernise.

Seemingly he, and pretty much he alone, continued to wear the queer looks of the interwar period into the television age. He duly became a transatlantic celebrity late in life when he became the inspiration for Sting’s song Englishman in New York in 1987.

Cecil Beaton, meanwhile, became a leading photographer for Vogue magazine and was commissioned to take official coronation portraits of Elizabeth II. He also designed the fantastic dresses worn by Audrey Hepburn in the film My Fair Lady (1964), inspired by the gowns he and his compatriots had dreamed up for themselves some 40 years earlier.

Dominic Janes, Professor of Modern History, Keele University

This article is republished from The Conversation under a Creative Commons license. "I fell for it!": Boys in blue crash gender reveal party

One Sydney couple have taken their friends and family by surprise with their high-stakes gender reveal, where the father-to-be was apparently put under arrest by two police officers.

Mina Ibrahim revealed their elaborate prank with a video posted to his TikTok account. Mina’s video begins with footage of the moment of his ‘arrest’, before it cuts to the TikToker at a later date, explaining that “that’s me being arrested at my baby’s gender reveal.”

He goes on to share the full video, and a promise that the ending will answer any questions his viewers may have.

In the clip, the parents-to-be can be seen talking to two uniformed NSW ‘police officers’, guests all around them, with Mina asking for onlookers to get their phones out. He then pushes one of the officers, telling them to leave, and both grab him before attempting to handcuff him, while his pregnant partner attempts to intervene.

As family members rush to assist, one of the officers calls for everyone to calm down, then delivers news that takes them all by surprise - and delight - by telling them, “it’s a baby girl.”

“So it was the cops who announced to everyone that I was having a baby girl,” present-day Mina informed his audience, before noting that there was a fake balloon inside to throw their guests off the surprise scent.

The prank attracted thousands of views online, with many flocking to his comments section to share their congratulations with the parents-to-be.

Others, while thrilled for them and their happy news, were open about their concern, having fallen for the trick right along with the couple’s loved ones.

“I fell for it and I was worried for your wife!!!,” one confessed. “I was freaking out hahahah you got me”.

“I was worried too haha … you scared me,” another said.

“Omygosh! I was ready to sue them coppas with you!” came one response, “but congratsss! What a way to reveal!”

One other simply wanted to know if the entire situation was even allowed, believing that impersonating the police may not be.

And another had simply been suspicious from the very start, noting “Broooo the whole time I was like … something ain’t right! He’s not carrying his gun”.

Images: TikTok

Birthday boy’s Bunnings bonanza

When it comes to birthdays, most children dream of a bouncy castle and a cake of epic proportions. But for one young boy and his parents, it was far more important to hit the nail of the theme on the head with the Bunnings bash.

Shay Chalmers and her husband, Ray, transformed their backyard for three-year-old Remy’s big day, decking the place out with Bunnings-themed decor, a pot planting worktable, a bouncy castle, and their very own sausage sizzle station.

“On the day we had a planting station, a painting station and a Play-Doh station (with printed Bunnings themed cutters),” Shay told The Daily Mail’s FEMAIL.

As for why they spent the $600 to give Remy his unique celebration? He’s one of Bunnings’ top fans, according to Shay.

“My son Remy is Bunnings obsessed, like his dad, and points them out as we drive,” she said. “It was fun to put together a party.”

A total of 30 guests came to join in on the fun with Remy and his family, each having their turn with the Bunnings merchandise on hand, which featured everything from branded uniforms for the children, volley and soccer balls, hats, and lolly bags. Although sourcing the goods proved a challenge for Shay and Ray, as “it's actually pretty hard to get a lot of branded merch in Perth, I [Shay] had to get my dad from Queensland to send a bunch of things over.”

Remy even had his very own Bunnings cake to enjoy, made for him by Shay’s friend.

“The highlight was seeing how excited the adults were to be there,” Shay noted, “I secretly think they enjoyed it more than the children.”

If footage from the party - shared to Shay’s social media accounts - is anything to go by, she could be onto something. Although the kids certainly seemed to be having a blast, too.

And the fun may yet go on, with many in the video’s comments voicing their desire to have a birthday just like Remy’s, while some were simply wondering where their invite had gotten to.

“I’m 27 and want a Bunnings themed party for myself,” one declared.

“Nah bc [because] this is a dream,” shared another, “I can literally spend hours at Bunnings and not get bored.”

One Bunnings employee viewed the clip, and admitted that “this is the cutest thing ever.”

Meanwhile, another saw potential for young Remy as a future Bunnings employee, and offered a tip by telling Shay “you better put some of these pictures in in his job application down the track.”

And Shay was in complete agreement, responding “oh yes!! They wouldn’t deny him a job with all this experience.”

Images: @mortgagebrokershay / Tiktok, @shaychalmbers / Instagram

Mum left devastated after no guests attend her daughter’s party

A US woman has been left devastated after none of the 27 invited guests showed at her daughter’s third birthday party.

Mum-of-three Breanna Strong had planned a massive celebration for her daughter, Avery, at KidsTopia Playground, a “jungle-themed indoor playground”, and had catered with pizzas, a Frozen-themed cake, and plenty of goodies for the kids.

But, she was left devastated for her daughter when none of the kids turned up.

Taking to TikTok, the 27-year-old shared her heartbreak in a clip that quickly went viral and prompted a flood of love to be sent Avery’s way.

“We invited 27 kids to Avery's third birthday party. Not a single one of her friends showed up,” she wrote in the video, which showed the empty party room.

“Money and time wasted. Literally going to go home and snuggle my babies.”

Images: TikTok

The video also included footage of Avery sitting alone eating pizza, before Strong took the rest and threw it in the bin, as well as a clip of Breanna holding back tears while driving home.

“I wish I was making this up,” she added in the caption.

She later explained in the comments that she had sent out virtual party invitations through Facebook, and while seven families had initially said they would come, some messaged her at the last minute to let her know they couldn’t make it - and the rest stood her up without explanation.

But Strong said she was more upset than her daughter was, who was too young to fully understand what happened and had fun at the indoor playground.

“She got everything she wanted. Pizza, Frozen cake, and jungle gym. She didn’t know any different rather than having fun. Just shattered my heart,” Strong explained.

Commenters were quick to share their support for the young girl, with some sharing that they had similar experiences with their children.

“Let’s have a redo. I’ll travel and got a bunch of kids who loves to make friends,” one suggested.

“This is a rule at my house. If we are invited, we’re GOING!” another wrote.

“We have been the only one that shows up. Cameron Diaz's star-studded 50th birthday party

Cameron Diaz has celebrated her 50th birthday surrounded by friends and family.

The beloved Hollywood actress’ 50th birthday milestone was a star-studded affair featuring husband Benji Madden and his twin brother Joel, sister-in-law Nicole Richie, Adele, Zoe Saldaña, her The Other Woman costar Leslie Mann and Mann's husband Judd Apatow.

A source told People that Cameron “celebrated for hours” with her family and friends.

"Cameron was wonderful. She had the best time celebrating her birthday," the source said.

"She was laughing and very much enjoying herself. She kept hugging Benji and her friends.

Another insider told the publication that the actress loves spending time with her family and is excited to get back into acting.

"She really loves her life so much. She loves being married and she loves being a mom," the source said.

"She enjoys being an entrepreneur and is also excited to start filming again. Cameron's daily motto is basically, 'Life is good!'”

The Charlie’s Angels star will star alongside Jamie Foxx in a Netflix movie called Back in Action.

Foxx announced the exciting news on Twitter in the form of a three-way phone call between himself, Diaz and NFL player Tom Brady.

Brady, who earlier in the year announced his retirement from the game but retracted it a few weeks later, was advising an “anxious” Diaz on how to come back into the spotlight.

Foxx and Diaz have a quick chat where he is asking how she’s feeling, trying to calm her nerves before surprising her with Brady on the other line.

There is not much yet known about the movie, but it is expected that comedian and fellow actor Seth Rogan will be directing it.

This also won’t be the first time Diaz and Foxx appeared alongside each other with the pair starring in Annie (2014) and Any Given Sunday (1999).

Diaz took a break from acting in 2014, a year before marrying rocker Benji Madden of Good Charlotte.

The couple have one child together, Raddix Madden who was born in December 2019.

After becoming a mother, Diaz did a small number of interviews speaking about whether or not she could get back into acting.

“Will I ever make a movie again? I’m not looking to, but will I? I don’t know. I have no idea,” Diaz previously said.

“Maybe, never say never, but I couldn’t imagine being a mum now where I’m at as a mother with my child at her first year to have to be on a movie set that takes 14 hours, 16 hours of my day away from my child.”

Image: Instagram

Get out your glitter and head down the Atlanta Highway – the B-52s are setting out on their final dance party!

After 45 years together the B-52’s have announced they are unplugging and de-wigging for their final US tour. “No one likes to throw a party more than we do, but after almost a half-century on the road, it’s time for one last blowout with our friends and family… our fans,” said Fred Schneider.

Who was to know that an impromptu jam session in 1976 in the American college town of Athens, Georgia, would be the foundation of a 45-year career?

The innovative band that formed in 1976 originally consisted of Cindy Wilson (vocals and guitar), Kate Pierson (vocals and keyboards), Fred Schneider (vocals), Ricky Wilson (guitar) and Keith Strickland (drums).

The world’s introduction to the B-52’s was the almost seven-minute song Rock Lobster. An unexpected hit, this uplifting musical concoction is comprised of a baritone-tuned Mosrite electric guitar riff, interspersed with stabbing Farfisa organ accents, and an array of vocal interplay with jazz-esque backing vocal parts.

These are interspersed with Pierson’s dolphin like vocal sounds while Schneider’s unique lead vocal spoken delivery offers lyrics about a crustacean. The accompanying video presented a mixture of pop culture’s past with 1950’s cartoonist hair styles, surf culture, combined with uniquely erratic choreography, but musically there are elements that serve as a disruption to pop music.

Rock Lobster reached number one in Canada, three in Australia, 37 on the UK singles charts and 56 on the US Billboard Hot 100.

Influences and scene

The band’s influences draw from diverse sources across pop culture, such as B-grade movies, Captain Beefheart, 60’s dance moves, Dusty Springfield, comic books, animated cartoons, the composer Nino Rota (Fellini films), pulp science-fiction and Yoko Ono.

This is perhaps best illustrated in the song Planet Claire (1978) which opens instrumentally with intermittent radio frequencies that fade to a central guitar riff derived from Mancini’s Peter Gunn theme, then bongos and keyboards stabs, and Pierson’s mesmerising unison singing (chromatic long notes) with the DX7 keyboard part. This is followed by witty, farcical lyrics with an abundance of sci-fi references: satellites, speed of light, Mars.

The B-52’s emerged from the 1970’s New Wave (rock) scene with their own combination of non-threatening post-punk and alternative surf rock musical aesthetics. Subversion was in the form of less musical dissonance and less density, more freedom, more harmonies, more play. Less aggressive, more diva, with an infectious enthusiasm.

They created their own niche that was unquestionably southern, and importantly broke new ground as LGBTIQ+ icons, by infusing an uncompromisingly camp and queer sensibility into pop culture.

From 1979 to 1986, the band recorded four studio albums that were best known for dance grooves, featuring the distinctive vocals of Schneider using sprechgesang(a spoken singing style credited to Humperdinck in 1897 and Schoenberg in 1912), the highly experimental vocal approaches of Pierson, growls and harmonies by Wilson, and Strickland’s surf guitar riffs.

They made novel instrumentation choices: toy pianos, walkie talkies, glockenspiels, and bongos, coupled with the innovative use of up-cycled fashion and costumes evoking individuality and liberation.

The exception was the EP Mesopotamia (1982) produced by David Byrne, a significant departure from their previous song production. Most noticeable is the slower tempo of Mesopotamia, 119 beats per minute (BPM) compared with Rock Lobster’s (1978) 179 BPM and Private Idaho’s (1980) driving 166 BPM tempo. Mesopotamia features additional synthesizer parts, poly-rhythmic beats (the combination of two or more different rhythms following the same pulse) and world beat influences.

On the surface the B-52s lyrics could be misconstrued as merely comedic, or nonsensical, however there are deeper underlining lyrical meanings that speak for the marginalised, referencing the band’s political ideology: environmental causes, feminism, LGBTIQ+ rights, and AIDS activism.

Late 1980s and early 1990s

Bouncing Off The Satellites took three years to complete and was released in 1986. Sadly, Ricky Wilson died from HIV/AIDS related illness in 1985 just after the recording sessions were complete. The B-52s reshaped the band with Strickland switching from drums to lead guitar. Later, the band also added touring members for studio albums and live performances.

The B-52s album with the greatest commercial success was Cosmic Thing (1989) co-produced by Don Was and Nile Rodgers. The single Love Shack, went double platinum, reached number 1 for eight weeks, and sold 5 million copies.

The song opens with engaging drum sounds at an infectious dance tempo of 133 BPM (beats per minute). Schneider’s distinctive vocal enters, then the bass and guitar parts. The arrangement places the hooks at the front in the song, with chorus vocal parts in 4ths.

Adding to the infectious groove is the live band sound featuring real brass section, and bass guitar and a bluesy guitar riff with crowd noises in the background. The alluring backing vocal parts on the lyrics “bang, bang, bang, on the door baby” are clearly reminiscent of the Batman television theme music.

Into the 21st century

In 2008 the band re-emerged from a 16-year recording absence with the 11-track album Funplex. There are notable modifications to the B-52s signature sound. Funplex is not the frenetic and spontaneous party music of previous albums. There are a few adaptations vocally too, with a change of roles with spoken word from Wilson and Pierson.

The band has toured every summer, with a variety of other bands on the circuit, the Tubes, Go-Go’s, Psychedelic Furs and KC & The Sunshine Band building new audiences.

Their appeal is still broad. In 2020, Rock Lobster was used in Australia for an Optus ad. The farewell tour billed as “their final tour ever of planet Earth” commences in August this year in Seattle.

This article originally appeared on The Conversation.
