Dolly Parton struck by family tragedy

Dolly Parton's older brother David Wilburn Parton has passed away at the age of 82.

The news was shared by their sister, Stella Parton, on social media.

"My brother David Passed away peacefully this morning. It's never easy to say goodbye to a loved one but he got his angel wings and is now at peace," she initially wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

She shared another post on Facebook on Friday November 15 (Saturday November 16 in Australia), "It's never easy to lose a loved one. My wonderful brother David Parton passed in the early hours of the morning."

The following day, she thanked everyone for their thoughts and prayers in a follow-up post, "Thank you for all your kind thoughts to my family as we continue to grieve the loss of our much loved and cherished oldest brother David."

While a specific cause of death has not been revealed, David's obituary, posted online by Farrar Funeral Home in White Pine, Tennessee, confirmed that he passed away at his home.

"The family would like to extend special thanks to Dr. David McNabney, Smoky Mountain Home Health & Hospice, his Cornerstone caregiver, Aubrie Smith & caregiver, Robin Schmidt," the obituary read.

Dolly has yet to comment on the death.

David is the oldest son among Dolly's 11 siblings, which include six brothers and five sisters. Among them, those remaining include Willadeene, 84, Coy, 81, Robert Jr., 76, Stella, Cassie, 73, Frieda, 67, Rachel, 65.

Unlike his famous siblings, David stayed out of the spotlight and had a thriving career as a bridge builder superintendent, working on many of the bridges in Tennessee.

He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Kay Parton, as well as three children and a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Image: Instagram

The hilarious reason Dolly Parton turned down tea with Princess Kate

It's been a remarkable year for country legend Dolly Parton, that she even received an invitation to tea with Princess Kate Middleton.

Unfortunately, the icon had to decline and shared the hilarious reason why on her latest interview with BBC Radio 2.

“This time, Lordy, I even got invited to have tea with Kate but I couldn’t even go," the country queen revealed about her time in London.

“I thought it was very sweet and nice of her to invite me and one of these days I’m going to get to do that – that would be great," she added.

When asked why she couldn't attend the prestigious afternoon tea, Parton joked: “She wasn’t going to promote my rock album so I had to say no.”

On a more serious note, she said that despite her love for the people and London, she "unfortunately" doesn't have enough time to explore the city while she's there on business.

The icon has been booked and busy with an upcoming rock album that is set to be released on November.

Earlier this month she released Let It Be, a cover of the iconic Beatles song which she sang with two members of the band Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr.

She's also been very active in her charity work, particularly her Imagination Library, which she founded and is currently expanding to help more children get free books up until they turn five.

Images: Getty

Dolly Parton makes huge announcement about future career

Dolly Parton has made a huge announcement about the future of her career, as she admits she wants to slow down as she "is getting older".

The country music legend is still writing and recording new tracks for her legions of fans, but the 76-year-old has said it's doubtful she will ever tour again.

In a new interview with Pollstar, Parton boldly claimed, “I do not think I will ever tour again,” before adding, “I’ll do special shows here and there, now and then. Maybe do a long weekend of shows, or just a few shows at a festival. But I have no intention of going on a full-blown tour anymore.”

Dolly said she will continue to churn out new music, but wants to enjoy a simpler life with her husband, Carl Thomas Dean.

Speaking of touring, Parton says, “I’ve done that my whole life, and it takes so much time and energy. I like to stay a little closer to home with my husband. We’re getting older now, and I don’t want to be gone for four or five weeks at a time. Something could happen."

"I would not feel right about that, if I were gone and somebody needed me. Or I would feel bad if I had to leave a tour if somebody got sick at home and needed me and then I had to walk out on the fans.”

Parton, who has been married to Dean since 1966, says her husband is who she is currently making new music for, in the form of a rock and roll album.

“When I got nominated for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, I thought, ‘well, no better time to do it.’ I had always wanted to do it. My husband is a big hard rock ’n’ roll fan, and for years I thought, ‘One of these days I’d like to do an album mainly just for him, just to kind of do it.’”

Too bad, Dolly: Rock n Roll Hall of Fame responds

After a quiet three days since Dolly Parton’s declaration that she’d like to drop out of the contest for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, the foundation has come out with a statement. Parton will remain on the ballot.

With voting already underway, the Foundation's position is that, while her "thoughtful" statement is worth consideration, the Hall of Fame is a big tent that includes far more than core rock acts, and it will be left up to the voters.

"All of us in the music community have seen Dolly Parton's thoughtful note expressing her feeling that she has not earned the right to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame," the statement says. "In addition to her incredible talent as an artist, her humility is another reason Dolly is a beloved icon by millions of fans around the world."

The statement continues, "From its inception, Rock and Roll has had deep roots in Rhythm & Blues and Country music. It is not defined by any one genre, rather a sound that moves youth culture. Dolly Parton's music impacted a generation of young fans and influenced countless artists that followed. Her nomination to be considered for induction into to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame followed the same process as all other artists who have been considered."

The Foundation goes on to reiterate that voting is already in process: "Dolly's recommendation, along with the other 16 nominees for the class of 2022 was sent out earlier this month to our 1200 general ballot voters, the majority of whom are artists themselves, for consideration for induction at our ceremony."

It concludes, "We are in awe of Dolly's brilliant talent and pioneering spirit and are proud to have nominated her for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame."

Parton further explained her position in an interview with Fox Thursday morning: "Well, I didn't feel exactly right about that," she said, while being interviewed on the show Fox & Friends.

"Because my perception, and I think the perception of most of America — I just feel like that's more for the people in rock music. I've been educated since then, saying that it's more than that, but I still didn't feel right about it. It kind of would be like putting AC/DC in the Country Music Hall of Fame. That just felt a little out of place for me."

Earlier this week, it was reported that sources close to the Hall's leadership said they were disinclined to do anything that would interrupt or subvert a vote already in progress, and were hopeful that Parton will change her mind if she is voted in.

Image: Getty

My is a total rock 'n' roll freak, and has always encouraged me to do one."

"I wish all of the nominees good luck and thank you again for the compliment. Rock on!" her statement concludes.

Although she has requested to be removed from consideration, it isn't entirely up to her. Musicians such as John Lydon, Todd Rundgren and Axl Rose have previously protested their inclusion, but were voted in regardless. In fact, when Sex Pistols were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2006, Lydon sent an angry letter to be read at the ceremony.

Additionally, ballots featuring her name have already been sent out, so it may be beyond her control. If she is inducted, however, she can abstain from attending the ceremony, like Lydon did.

Image: Getty

Dolly Parton turns down offer of statue

Dolly Parton took to social media on Thursday (3 am Friday AEDT) to declare that she does not want the Tennessee legislature to approve putting up a statue of her at the state capitol.

"I want to thank the Tennessee legislature for their consideration of a bill to erect a statue of me on the Capitol grounds," she wrote.

"I am honoured and humbled by their intention," she continued — but not that humbled, necessarily, by the governing body's attempt to come up with some feel-good legislation amid all of its famously divisive and controversial bills.

The country-pop superstar said that she has "asked the leaders of the state legislature to remove the bill from any and all consideration. With all that is going on in the world, I don't think that putting me on a pedestal is appropriate at this time."

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Dolly Parton (@dollyparton)

Enshrining Parton at the Capitol had been in the talks for years and the suggestion especially picked up steam when there was increasing pressure to remove statues of famous Confederates from the Capitol, with some saying the biggest star from Tennessee would be a good replacement instead.

In January, Rep. John Windle (D-Livingston) introduced a bill that would create a "Dolly Parton fund" and entrust the State Capitol Commission with developing a plan for placing a Parton statue. The bill was scheduled to go up for consideration Tuesday before the House state government committee.

Parton has however left the door open for a statue of herself at some point in the future - when she doesn't have to show up for it.

"I hope, though, that somewhere down the road several years from now or perhaps after I'm gone if you still feel I deserve it, then I'm certain I will stand proud in our great State Capitol as a grateful Tennessean. In the meantime, I'll continue to try to do good work to make this great state proud."

Dolly Parton hasn't received vaccine despite donating $1 million

75-year-old Dolly Parton has confirmed that she hasn't received the vaccine for COVID-19 yet, but is waiting patiently.

This is despite the country music legend donating USD $1 million to vaccine development.

"I'm going to get it, though," she said Thursday to CNN. "I didn't want to jump line. I didn't donate the money so I could be protected. I did it for everybody."

This is despite the singer learning that her donation helped fund Moderna's promising vaccine at the same time as the rest of the world.

She was beaming with pride at the news when she found out.

"Praise the lord!" she told "Today" hosts Hoda Kotb and Jenna Bush Hager. "I'm just very grateful that this is happening, and if I had anything to do with it, that's great."

"I just felt so proud to have been part of that little seed money that will hopefully grow into something great and help to heal this world," she said. "I'm a very proud girl today to know I had anything at all to do with something that's going to help us through this crazy pandemic."

The Moderna vaccine is thought to be 94.5% effective against coronavirus, with the company tracking new mutations in COVID-19, including the highly contagious UK, South African and Brazilian strains.
