Daughter stunned by little-known iPhone feature after father's sudden death

Queensland woman Carrie Payne was unable to access her father's phone after he died unexpectedly last month due to Apple's policy.

The policy is that devices locked with a passcode and therefore protected by passcode encryption, cannot be accessed without erasing the contents on the device.

Apple has refused to create software to hack into the iPhone for security reasons, and for grieving families who don't have access to their loved one's phones, this could mean that hundreds of photos and memories could be lost.

After losing her father unexpectedly from intracranial haemorrhage, Payne did not have access to his phone, which made it difficult for her to contact his friends and colleagues to inform them of his death.

“We also then couldn’t use any of the family photos he may have had on there in his funeral service,” she said.

“In the end, we are at peace with things now and haven’t pursued anything. We may still investigate this once we have all the legal documents to confirm his passing/the terms of his estate, but we are weighing this up with his right to privacy in death. The immediacy of needing access has gone, so we are instead focusing on remembering him.”

While she has tried almost everything to gain access to the phone, she has had no luck, and now she wants to prevent the same thing from happening to someone else.

Payne, an estate planning lawyer, shared the little-known iPhone feature, called a Legacy Contact.

This can be set for your Apple ID on an iPhone (starting from iOS 15.2), iPad (iPadOS 15.2) and Mac (macOS 12.1).

The Legacy Contact gets access to data stored in your Apple account after your death including iCloud photos, contacts, calendars, messages, mail, voice memos, notes, files stored in iCloud drive, apps you have downloaded and device backups.

But, data like payment information and passwords remain off limits.

To add a Legacy Contact on your iPhone or iPad, you go to settings, tap your name, tap sign-in & security, and then tap legacy contact.

On a Mac, click the Apple menu, then system settings, then Apple ID, then sign-in & security, and legacy contact.

After your death, your Legacy Contact will need the access key that you generate when you choose them as your contact and your death certificate.

The Legacy Contact will have access to your data for three years from when the first legacy account request has been approved.

In Australia, next of kin can request access to an account with the right legal documentation if they don't have a Legacy Contact access key.

Images: Carrie Payne

"I can't hear you!": New feature set to do away with subtitles

Nothing is more annoying than sitting in front of your TV, eager to watch your favourite show only for the dialogue to be completely wiped because of cars passing by or a plane taking off.

Not being able to hear the dialogue in a TV show or movie, especially in an action or crime-driven blockbuster where anything exploding masks all dialogue has been an everlasting problem for viewers.

Netflix has revealed that 40 per cent of subscribers have subtitles on at all times while surveys in the US and UK saw anywhere between 60 and 70 per cent of young viewers as frequent users of subtitles.

If you’re using subtitles for the purpose of hearing the dialogue rather an accessibility reasons, streaming giant Amazon is introducing a new feature that could eradicate the need to turn them on because of the sound mix.

The feature is called ”dialogue boost" and it raises the volume of the dialogue track relative to the score, ambient sound or effects.

Although Amazon has so generously offered this solution to subscribers, the dialogue boost feature will only be available on a handful of Amazon Prime Video’s originals, like Beautiful Boy, Being The Ricardos, Jack Ryan and The Marvelous Mrs Maisel.

A similar feature already appears on some expensive sound systems and TV sets, but Amazon boasts it’s the first streaming platform to roll it out worldwide.

To work the feature, select it from the audio and subtitles drop-down menu on an individual title, there will be two options to select from, “English Dialogue Boost: High” or “English Dialogue Boost: Medium”.

The title page for a TV series or movie will show whether the dialogue boost is available.

According to Variety, the helpful feature was originally designed for hearing-impaired viewers.

Rest assured, if you struggle to hear the dialogue due to the sound mix, there's help on the way, granted it's exclusive to Amazon.

Long-awaited feature FINALLY available for iPhones

iPhone users rejoice! The latest iOS update has brought with it a long-awaited feature: editing and unsending text messages.

The new iOS 16 update, available for iPhone released after 2017, now allows users to unsend and edit iMessages, but there are some caveats.

A message can only be unsent within two minutes of it being sent, while editing can occur within 15 minutes.

How to unsend

To unsend a message, open the Messages app, press and hold down the text you want to unsend.

This will bring up the Tapback reactions and a quick action menu, which includes the option to undo send or edit, and then tap Undo Send.

The text will then disappear from both your phone and from the recipient’s, though it will be replaced by a notification saying that a message has been unsent.

But, this function won’t work if the recipient doesn’t have the new update, even if your phone says it has unsent the message.

How to edit

If you’ve sent an unfortunate typo or some other details, editing messages is now a simple affair.

To edit, simply open the Messages app, go into any thread that is using iMessage (also known as blue text), and hold down the message you want to edit.

When the reactions and menu appear, tap on Edit. This will allow you to delete the entire message, fix mistakes or add more text.

Once you’re happy, tap the blue checkmark on the right side to save your edits.

A single message can only be edited a maximum of five times, and an “edited” button will appear under your text, which the recipient can tap on to view previous versions.

Image: Getty Images

Forget plastic surgery! These 7 makeup tricks could completely transform your features

Nose contouring instead of a nose job

If you find your nose too big, too wide, or too something else, get ready to transform it with contouring. For the uninitiated, contouring is the process of strategically placing bright concealer or highlighter on areas you want to catch light, making them more pronounced, and darker products on places where you want to create shadows, making them less noticeable.

There are specific contouring techniques for each nose shape, but in every case, you’ll want to apply concealer that’s two shades lighter than your skin tone to the bridge of your nose, and a greyish-brown or dark taupe colour (a powder or liquid) to cover bumps, wide nostrils, or hook shapes. Always blend the light and dark colours into place using a beauty blender sponge or a rechargeable makeup brush, which evenly disperses granules of makeup in thin, even layers for an airbrush-like finish. The results are like an instant nose job – no surgery required!

Strategic eyeliner instead of an eye lift

Oh, the wonders of a good eyeliner. Whether your eyes are too small, too big, too down-turned or too something else, applying eyeliner in the proper style and colour is the perfect way to visibly alter their shape. To open up the eyes, adding white liner to the lower lash line creates an optical illusion as it acts as a continuation of your eyes, making them look bigger.

For down-turned eyes, nothing works better than a reverse cat eye in black liner. For hooded lids, apply smokey eyeliner to enhance the outer corners for the illusion of lift.

Shading cheekbones instead of fillers

Women have been turning to pricey injectable fillers to fake supermodel cheekbones, but there’s a much easier – and cheaper – way. For this no-fuss three-step process, all you need is your trusty contour kit (foundation that is two shades lighter than your skin tone, plus a base that is two shades darker), which you will use to outline and highlight the apples of your cheeks.

First apply the one-shade lighter cream foundation on your cheekbones to draw light; then apply the two-shades darker base below the cheekbones to help those areas recede. Finish with a pop of pink or peach on the apples of your cheeks, and dab a few drops of liquid highlighter at the top of cheekbones. Blend, et voila – Hollywood cheekbones.

Smoothing foundation instead of botox

Many foundations are prone to caking, cracking and flaking, which are likely to make any wrinkles and blemishes more noticeable instead of concealing them. If you want your face to look younger, one of the easiest ways is by smoothing skin.

That means starting with a primer, which smooths the canvas of your face, like a painter would spackle and prime walls before applying colour. Follow with a satin foundation for a silky smooth, practically Photoshopped face.

Overlining lips instead of injectable plumpers

Less is definitely more here, but this tiny adjustment will make a huge difference in the appearance of your lips. The trick is to first apply a neutral-coloured, matte lip liner all over your lips; then trace slightly outside the lines. Don’t venture more than a few millimetres beyond your natural lip line, as that looks too obvious (and a little scary).

You can also strategically choose the areas you want to overline, like the cupid’s bow or bottom lip instead of the entire rim. Once you’ve overlined, apply your favourite matte lipstick not only to your lips, but onto the overlined area as well. A matte finish will hide the line you’ve added, whereas shiny lipstick emphasises it.

Chisel your chin with powder instead of surgery

If your jawline isn’t quite as sharp as you’d like, shaping powder is an easy way to get more definition. Take a greyish-brown powder (nothing too orange) and apply it along your jaw line from behind your ear all the way down to the tip of your chin.

Repeat this application on the other side of your jaw. Blend the powder down your neck so that there aren’t any noticeable lines or colour differences. You’ll absolutely love the look of your sharp new bone structure.

Slim your silhouette

Though some celebrities manage to rock a round face, the rest of us can feel insecure about so-called chipmunk cheeks. A great way to slim your face is to use a contour stick and bronzer to hollow out the cheeks, then apply blush and highlighter above the bronzer to make your cheekbones more pronounced.

This will not only elongate your face shape, but will give you those model-like chiselled cheeks.

This article originally appeared on Reader's Digest.

Bargain rental is “spacious” but missing key features

A studio apartment up for rent in Birmingham, England, for less than $850 a month isn’t unusual just for its cheap price - it’s missing some crucial amenities.

Listed on Rightmove for £425 ($NZ 810) a month, the studio’s shower is located in an unlikely spot, directly opposite the bed.

The prime location of the shower in relation to the bed could be a perk for some, but it's clear screen makes for a lack of privacy. Finally! Long-awaited features coming to iPhones

Apple has announced a new suite of features will be introduced to iPhones in the latest update, including some that have been highly anticipated by iPhone owners.

The tech giant broke the news at its Worldwide Developers Conference at Apple Park in Cupertino, California, in early June, which corresponded to a jump in the value of Apple’s shares by 0.2 percent according to news.com.au.

Apple revealed that the new iOS 16 operating system would include one of the company’s most highly-requested changes: the ability to edit and un-send iMessages.

A total overhaul of the phone’s lockscreen will also be included in the new operating system, with users gaining the ability to create their own using custom fonts and widgets for a host of different apps.

The new lockscreen was announced at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference Image: Apple

Apple said that notifications will also “roll in” through a compact bar at the bottom of the screen rather than dominating the whole display.

“We have re-imagined how the Lock Screen looks and works with exciting new features that make it more personal and helpful, introduced iCloud Shared Photo Library for families, streamlined communication through new capabilities in Messages and Mail, and harnessed enhanced intelligence with updates to Live Text and Visual Look Up,” Craig Thompson, Apple’s senior vice president of software engineering, said in a press release.

The news comes as Apple will be forced to use the same charger for smartphones, tablets and laptops sold in the European Union, under a landmark deal that will see a single charger be able to charge any device sold in the EU from late 2024, per news.com.au.

“This is a rule which will apply to everyone,” said Member of the European Parliament (MEP) Alex Agius Saliba, who led the negotiations.

“If Apple ... or anyone wants to market their product, sell their products within our internal market, they have to abide by our rules and their device has to be USB-C,” he said.

Image: Getty Images

Anti-trans billboard featuring Aussie swimmers comes under fire

Swimming Australia and the Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) have threatened a conservative lobby group with legal action over billboards featuring images of elite female swimmers used in a campaign against trans women competing in sport, per The Guardian.

Conservative group Advance, formerly the Advance Australia Party, has produced billboards and social media graphics featuring the phrase “Women’s sport is not for men” alongside images of Dawn Fraser, Emma McKeon and Emily Seebohm, after all three commented on the issue recently.

The group recently launched the billboards as criticism of Warringah MP Zali Steggall’s support for including trans women in female sports, all while supporting Liberal Warringah candidate Katherine Deves following her controversial comments about trans people.

A spokesperson for the AOC said the organisation will send a legal letter to Advance, alleging the billboards use its intellectual property without permission.

The billboards use images of Seebohm and McKeon in their uniforms that feature the Olympic rings, the intellectual property the AOC claims is being used without permission.

Swimming Australia has also sent a legal threat to Advance to “immediately” remove the ads, and “strongly condemns” the use of the athletes’ imagery.

The organisation has claimed Advance didn’t seek or receive permission to use the imagery.

“For clarity - if it was sought it would have been categorically denied. Swimming Australia does not endorse this, or any message, from the Advance Australia party,” Eugénie Buckley, the chief executive of Swimming Australia, said in a statement.

“Swimming Australia believes in a competitive environment that is inclusive, fair and equitable for all athletes at the same time. Ultimately, all Australians deserve to feel welcome, safe, valued and celebrated in swimming.”

Advance has indicated it will not remove the billboards following Swimming Australia’s legal threat.

Seebohm has criticised Advance for using her comments and image “as part of a political agenda without my consent”.

The Olympic swimmer previously told Sky News that “biological males are always going to be stronger, fitter, faster than biological females” and that swimming authorities “need to work out how we can all come together in this sport”.

Meanwhile, Fraser told the Daily Telegraph, “I don’t think it’s fair to have transgender men competing against women”, and McKeon said she “personally would not want to be racing against someone who is biologically male” at a Griffith University event.

Seebohm has stood by her comments, telling Guardian Australia she didn’t consent to their use by Advance.

“As I have stated in the media this week, there needs to be a conversation started about how to be inclusive while still maintaining fairness for all athletes,” she told the publication.

“I did not, and would never, give my permission for my image or brand to be used by Advance Australia on the mobile billboards, or advertising that is currently circulating, as part of a political campaign.

“I remain committed to finding a fair solution for all athletes to be able to compete on a level playing field, while encouraging inclusiveness and supporting more young people to become involved in the sport.”

According to reports from Nine News, Fraser has engaged her own solicitor to address the use of her image in the campaign.

Image: Advance Australia (Facebook)

18 hidden voice memos features you never knew about

Make the most of your voice memo app

Your iPhone is packed with productivity tools, but you don’t have to download a dozen apps for your device to become a true time-saver. Apple’s voice memo app alone can add to your productivity, help you keep track of your appointments and reminders, and act as your personal assistant. Use Voice Memos to record conversations, meetings, lectures, and the great idea you had while driving or walking the dog. You can even record a phone call on your iPhone by using the Voice Memos app.

The app is easy to locate – you’ll find it in your Utilities folder, though you can move it wherever you’d like, or ask Siri to open it for you. It’s easy to use. It’s available on iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch and Apple computers. And best of all, it’s free. There’s no time limit for recordings (it’s dependent on the internal storage capacity of your device), so you can likely record that entire lecture without worry.

Scroll down for tips that take you beyond voice memo recording and to all of the truly cool things you can do with a voice memo app.

Record a voice memo

There are a whole host of reasons you might make good use of a voice memo app. Maybe your boss loves to have walking meetings, but you’re not quite skilled at walking, note-taking… and not running into a tree. Maybe you’re meeting colleagues for a brainstorming dinner and want to keep track of everyone’s ideas. Or maybe you need a quick way to take down a brilliant idea – for a business, a birthday gift, you name it – during your commute.

It’s incredibly easy to use your iPhone’s Voice Memos app. (Just be sure to ask the other person’s permission first!) Here’s how:

Open the Voice Memos app.

To start recording, tap the red record button.

Boom! You’re recording your conversation.

Pause a recording

While you may often record straight through without breaks, there are times when you may want to pause a recording. For instance, during an important lunch meeting with colleagues, you really don’t need to keep track of your coworkers ordering coffee at the care. This iPhone trick will also be helpful during conversations with long pauses or when you’re put on hold. Here’s how to do it:

While recording, tap or swipe up on the recording field at the bottom of your screen to bring it into full-screen view.

Tap the pause symbol to temporarily stop recording.

Tap Resume to continue.

Stop a recording

When you’re done recording your conversation, remember to actually stop the recording or you’ll be stuck with a really long voice memo that eats into your storage space. Here’s how to do it:

In partial-screen view: Hit the red square.

In full-screen view: Tap the pause button, then hit the word Done.

Delete a recording

Not every recording is worth saving. If you decide you don’t need yours, it’s easy to delete. Here’s how to do that:

In your All Recordings list, find the voice memo you’d like to delete.

Select the recording to expand the field.

Tap the trash can.

Recover a recently deleted recording

If you delete the wrong file, don’t panic. Just as you can recover deleted photos, you can recover recently deleted recordings. Just follow the steps below.

Navigate to the main Voice Memos screen.

Tap Recently Deleted.

Tap the recording you’d like to restore.

Select Recover to restore your recording.

To recover multiple deleted voice memos, select Edit in the upper-right corner. Tap all of the recordings you’d like to restore, then select Recover All from the lower left-hand corner.

One thing to bear in mind: you only have about 30 days to recover deleted files.

Save a recording in the Voice Memos app

If you’re satisfied with your recording, you’ll want to save it. Thankfully, a voice memo on iPhone saves automatically. As soon as you stop a recording, it’ll save in the Voice Memos app and appear in your All Recordings list. Yep, it’s actually as simple as that.

Rename your recording

Be sure to give your file a new name so you’ll be able to find it easily in the future. Here’s how to do that:

Tap the recording.

Tap on the name.

Type your new file name.

Save a recording to an iCloud folder

While Voice Memos automatically saves a recording, you may want to save it to iCloud for extra security – or so you can access it from any device. By following the steps below, you’ll ensure your voice memo remains in the app and in your chosen folder.

Tap the recording you want to move.

Look for a circle with three dots in it. Tap it.

Select Save to Files from the list below.

Tap the folder you’d like to add it to.

To create a new iCloud folder, tap the folder icon in the top right corner.

Organise recordings in Voice Memos folders

If you use the voice memo app often, you may want to organise your recordings to make them easier to find, just as you would organise your apps for easier access. You can group them in folders, which you’ll find on the main Voice Memos screen.

Here’s how to move a voice memo to a folder:

Tap the recording you want to move.

Tap the circle with three dots in it (to the right of the recording’s name).

Select Move to Folder from the list below.

Tap on the folder you want your recording to appear in.

To create a new folder, tap the folder icon in the lower right-hand corner. Give the folder a name, then select Save. Select that folder to save your recording there.

Crop a recording

There are many reasons why you might want to crop your new file. Musicians often use the Voice Memos app and then crop out the bits they don’t want to share. One thing to keep in mind: While the crop icon looks the same as in Voice Memos as it does in other apps, the function is actually called Trim.

Navigate to your All Recordings list.

Tap the voice memo you want to crop.

Tap the button to the right of your recording that looks like three small dots in a circle.

Select the Edit Recording option.

Tap the crop tool at the top right of the file.

Drag the yellow trim handles until the section you want to keep is highlighted in yellow and the section you want to crop is in white.

Be sure to check that you’re keeping the part you want. Tap the play button to listen.

Click the Trim button to crop everything except the section highlighted in yellow.

Tap save and then Done, and you’re good to go.

You can also delete an entire portion of your recording. With the section selected (it’ll be yellow), tap the Delete button. Remember, Trim removes everything except the yellow segment, while Delete removes the yellow segment.

Replace sections of a recording

If you mumbled or coughed in the middle of an important voice memo, fear not! It’s really easy to record over the bits you don’t like.

Go to your All Recordings list.

Tap the recording you want to fix.

Tap the button to the right of your recording that looks like three small dots in a circle.

Select Edit Recording.

Move your finger over the waveform (the lines that visually represent your recording) until you’re in the section of your recording you want to replace.

Tap the red Replace button to start recording. The waveform will turn red while you record.

Tap the pause button when you’re done.

Check your recording by hitting the play button. If you’re satisfied, tap Done to save your changes.

The great news: You can do this in as many places as you like to make sure you’re happy with the entire recording.

Speed up or slow down a recording

If a fast or slow talker is making your voice memo sound weird, or if you need to speed up or slow down a section of music, you can do that easily with the voice memo app.

Navigate to your All Recordings list.

Tap the audio file you want to speed up or slow down.

You’ll see an icon in the bottom left corner that looks like a synthesizer, or three lines with buttons. Tap the icon.

Under Playback Speed, move the horizontal slider to the left (toward the tortoise icon) to slow down the playback speed of your recording. Move it to the right (toward the hare) to speed up your recording.

Tap the X at the top right of the box to close the screen.

Press play on your recording to test the new speed.

If you’re not happy with the way it sounds, return to the Playback Speed function and select the blue Reset option.

When you’re happy with the recording, tap the X to close the screen again.

Automatically skip silences in a recording

Unlike in real life, it’s really easy to remove awkward silences from recordings in your Voice Memos app.

Tap the audio file you want to edit.

Tap the icon in the lower-left corner that looks like a synthesiser (three stacked lines, each with a knob).

Toggle on the Skip Silence button.

Tap the X icon.

Tap the play button to listen to the recording and see if you like the way it sounds.

Enhance a recording

While writing this article, I was typing in the background. I also coughed quite a few times, which didn’t sound amazing on my recording. If you have street noises or other background sounds on your voice memo or just want to create a more professional recording, you can easily enhance it, just as I did.

Tap the audio file you want to edit.

Tap the icon in the lower-left corner that looks like a synthesiser (three stacked lines, each with a knob).

Toggle on the Enhance Recording button.

Tap the X icon.

Tap the play button to listen to the recording and see if you like the way it sounds.

Duplicate a recording

Before you edit any recording, you probably should make a backup. That way, if you end up hating your edits, you always have a fresh copy of the original. It’s also helpful if you want to compare the original with the edits.

Go to your All Recordings list.

Tap the recording you want to duplicate.

Tap the button to the right of your recording that looks like three small dots inside a circle.

Select Duplicate from the list.

The copy of your recording will appear directly below the original with the word “copy” added to the file name. Tap the file to change the file name.

Copy a recording

I like to keep copies of all my important files in several places. If a file becomes corrupted, I can head to my backup and work from there. Here’s how to copy a recording in your iPhone Voice Memos app.

Go to your All Recordings list.

Tap the recording you want to copy.

Tap the button to the right of your recording that looks like three small dots in a circle.

Select Copy from the list.

From there, you can paste the voice memo into an email or text to send to yourself (or someone else) as a backup.

Share a recording

There are many reasons why you might want to share your recording. Maybe your colleagues want a copy of that daylong meeting you recorded or you’re sending your audio notes to someone for transcription. The Voice Memos app makes sharing your file super simple; just follow the steps below.

Navigate to your All Recordings list.

Tap the file you want to share.

Tap the button to the right of your recording that looks like three small dots in a circle.

Select Share from the options below.

Select how you’d like to share this file, such as via email, text, or AirDrop.

Record a phone call

Maybe you’re speaking with a lawyer and want to catch every last detail. Or maybe you’re interviewing someone. Whatever your reason, it’s helpful to know how to record a phone conversation. Apple doesn’t make that easy – you can’t record a call in Voice Memos while you’re on your phone. But there’s a workaround: Use two devices.

Open the Voice Memos app on your iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch, or Mac computer.

Start recording by tapping the red record button.

Make your phone call from a different phone. Be sure to place the call on speaker so Voice Memos captures both sides of the conversation.

When your call is over, hang up the phone and stop recording.

Written by Rachel Weingarten. Little known iPhone feature saved this man’s life

A New Zealand man has shared how a feature on his iPhone saved his life after he fell through a five-metre crevasse while snowboarding alone.

Tim Blakey fell down the hole while snowboarding in Switzerland, with nobody seeing him disappear.

Taking to Instagram to share his story, Mr Blakey said he would never snowboard alone again after the incident.

“No matter how experienced you think you are, it is no joke,” he wrote.

“I was lured into a false sense of security which also led me to be very blasé about researching the areas I snowboard.”

Though his iPhone had just three percent of its battery left and he had very little reception, Mr Blakey was able to signal for help using a feature found on recent models.
<blockquote class="instagram-media" style="background: #FFF; Harry and Meghan’s Christmas card features first photo of Lilibet

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have released their virtual Christmas card, and it comes with a delightful surprise for the holidays: the first photo of daughter Lilibet.

Lilibet Diana Mountbatten-Windsor was born in June, but no photos of her have been released by the family, until now. Lost song featuring The Beatles unearthed

A previously unheard song featuring George Harrison and Ringo Starr has been discovered in a Birmingham loft during lockdown.

The song, titled Radhe Shaam, was written and produced by broadcaster Suresh Joshi in 1968 and features George on guitar and Ringo on drums at the height of their fame.

The track was unearthed in Suresh’s home by a friend who was checking up on him during lockdown, and was played for 100 people at the Liverpool Beatles Museum.

Mr Joshi was a good friend of George Harrison’s and was the one who introduced him to Ravi Shankar: one of India’s most celebrated musicians.

He was a big influence on the Beatle and famously taught him to play the sitar.

The broadcaster was working on music for a documentary film in London at the time the song was recorded, when George Harrison and Ringo Starr turned up and offered to play.

The pair were taking a break from recording Hey Jude at the same Trident Studios in London’s Soho at the time.

The track also featured renowned Indian classical musician Aashish Khan, but Suresh Joshi said he never got round to releasing it to the public.

"Time had gone on, [then] The Beatles were breaking up and had various problems so no-one wanted to [release it]," he said to the BBC.

However he said the coronavirus lockdown was a "blessing in disguise as we had nothing to do".

Despite the track being locked away, Mr Joshi said the song is still relevant to today’s audiences.

"The song itself revolves around the concept that we are all one, and that the world is our oyster," he said.

"[That is] something that we have all realised during this pandemic."

Mum shares “life-saving” iPhone feature

A woman has taken to Facebook to share a simple iPhone feature that could save lives.

The mother based on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland said she was shopping at a local Kmart when a woman became unresponsive and was in dire need of medical attention.

“I was looking through her purse and then when I found her phone, it’s locked and needs the pin number she was unresponsive so we could not access the contacts,” she wrote on Facebook.

While searching through the woman’s phone in the hope to find out more information, she remembered a feature she could access without needing the pin code or face time to unlock.

“Lucky she was ok but if I could of called her nearest and dearest we could of been told of any possible illnesses and maybe they have an epipen or something,” the woman added.

She was referencing Apple’s emergency contact feature which is on every iPhone, even if the handset is locked.

“In your settings add a medical ID, it will have all medical knowledge and emergency contact numbers that an ambulance or member of the public can use without unlocking your phone,” the woman explained.

The emergency contact features is available for all iPhone users to nominate an emergency contact phone number as well as list any allergies or medical requirements that can be identified without having to unlock the device or risk any other private information being shared.

To make an emergency call the Apple website instructs users to go to the lock screen and then tap the red “emergency” button.

The person can then call the emergency number the iPhone user has nominated.

Medical information such as allergies and conditions can be listed in this screen as well,

“If someone needs help and is unresponsive, you can check their iPhone for Medical ID.

“Medical ID provides information about a person that may be important in an emergency, like allergies, medical conditions and who to contact,” the Apple website states.

Hallmark Channel apologises for pulling ads featuring same-sex weddings

The Hallmark Channel is backtracking on their decision to pull advertisements featuring same-sex couples and apologising for removing them in the first place.

The decision comes after Hallmark parent company Crown Media Family Networks faced criticism from viewers and advertisers over the TV spot, with them threatening to boycott the network.

The ads, from online wedding planning company Zola, showed same-sex couples celebrating marriages.

Hallmark president and CEO Mike Perry said Sunday the company made the “wrong decision” and wants to reinstate the commercials.

“The Crown Media team has been agonising over this decision as we’ve seen the hurt it has unintentionally caused. Said simply, they believe this was the wrong decision,” Perry said in a statement to CNN Business.

“Our mission is rooted in helping all people connect, celebrate traditions, and be inspired to capture meaningful moments in their lives. Anything that detracts for this purpose is not who we are,” he said.

“As the CEO of Hallmark, I am sorry for the hurt and disappointment this has caused.”

Zola said earlier that the ad was one of several that were scheduled to run on Hallmark and that “the only difference between the commercials that were flagged and the ones that were approved” is that the flagged ads included a lesbian couple kissing.

They then revealed that an ad featuring a heterosexual couple kissing was approved.

One of the ads in question shows a lesbian couple at the altar on their wedding day, talking about whether they should have used Zola to share details of their ceremony and registry with their guests.

But after conservative group One Million Mums targeted the network, demanding for the ads to be taken down, Hallmark caved into the pressure.

In its original statement, Hallmark said it pulled the ads because the “debate surrounding these commercials on all sides was distracting from the purpose of our network, which is to provide entertainment value.”

But now, CEO Perry says that Hallmark will discuss with Zola on ways to “reestablish our partnership and reinstate the commercials.” It will also work with the advocacy organisation GLAAD to “better represent” the LGBTQ community across its brands.

Baby alert: Game-changing pre-flight feature set to make long-haul flights more bearable

Being around kids can be an enjoyable experience.

However, long-haul flights near a screaming toddler never makes for an easy flight.

But one airline has taken matters into their hands and come up with a handy idea to potentially lessen the situation from ever happening to anti-baby flyers ever again.

Japan Airlines (JAL) has implemented a new feature on its booking system which shows what seats on the aircraft will be occupied by infants up to the age of two.

During the seat selection process of booking with the airline, any seats taken by a toddler are highlighted with a baby icon.

Japan Airlines (JAL) has introduced a new feature on its booking system that indicates which seats on the plane will be occupied by infants.

The site states: “Passengers travelling with children between 8 days and 2 years old who select their seats on the JAL website will have a child icon displayed on their seats on the seat selection screen.

This lets other passengers know a child may be sitting there.”

People have responded to the new feature, with one saying : “Flying exclusively Japan Airlines from now on so I can sit next to babies.”

Another Twitter user sung the carrier’s praises, writing: “Thank you, @JAL_Official_jp for warning me about where babies plan to scream and yell during a 13-hour trip. This really ought to be mandatory across the board.”

However, one social media user said the new feature is unfair.

“This is a form of prejudice against children and their families even though i totally agree sitting close to little children is not comfortable,” they wrote.

The airline says the seat plan showing where babies are sitting will only work if passengers make their booking through its website.

The baby icons will also not display if there is a change in aircraft.

Facebook restricts “Facebook Live” feature following Christchurch attacks

After the horrific Christchurch attacks that saw a lone gunman kill 51 people in two mosques whilst streaming it via Facebook Live, the social media giant has decided to take action.

Facebook has said in a statement that it’s introducing a “one-strike” policy for use of Facebook Live. From now on, anyone who violates our most serious policies will be restricted from using Live for set periods of time – for example 30 days – starting on their first offense. For instance, someone who shares a link to a statement from a terrorist group with no context will now be immediately blocked from using Live for a set period of time.”

A spokeswoman for Facebook pointed out that “it would have not been possible for the shooter to use Live on his account under the new rules”.

The company plans to extend the new restrictions to other areas of the site over the coming weeks and it plans to start with preventing the same people from creating ads on Facebook.

There are also plans for Facebook to fund research at three universities on techniques to detect manipulated media, which Facebook’s systems still struggle with. This was proven after the attacks as manipulated media was everywhere on the platform.

Facebook has said it removed 1.5 million videos globally that contained footage of the attack in the first 24 hours after it occurred. It said in a blog post in late March that it had identified more than 900 different versions of the video.

Not only can you get up without crawling over people, but you can make your seat extra roomy at the push of a button, thanks to one of the coolest secret airplane features. Reach under the armrest closest to the aisle and feel around near the hinge. You should find a button, which will instantly let you swing the armrest up when you push it, according to Travel + Leisure. Once it’s in line with your seat back, it won’t dig into your side anymore, and you can move your legs around without hitting anything.

2. Flight attendants don’t just touch the ceiling for fun when they walk; the bottom of the overhead compartment has a scalloped area that gives better grip when walking down a moving airplane, according to Condé Nast Traveler. If there’s an emergency water landing, the wings would be very slippery for passengers trying to get to the inflatable slide that would have deployed. To help travellers get off without falling, the easy-to-miss airplane features let cabin crew slip a rope through one hook and fasten it to the next, according to pilot “Captain” Joe. Passengers could hold on to the rope while on the plane to make it away from the plane safely.

5. Each one lines up with the edge of the airplane’s wing, according to pilot “Captain” Joe. If a flight attendant needs to check the airplane’s slats or flaps – the moving parts on a wing – they’ll know exactly where to go for the best view. If you’re getting motion sick on a plane, you might want to see if you can move to a seat between the triangles. Take an even closer look and you’ll realise that unlike other windows, this one is made of three panes, and the hole is in the middle one. The quirk is there to protect against the pressure drop of flying high into the atmosphere, according to Slate. As a plane ascends, the pressure outside drops massively, but the cabin is designed to stay at a comfortable pressure. That leaves a big difference in pressure inside and outside of the plane. The outside window takes on most of that pressure, and the hole in the middle one helps balance the pressure difference. The inner window is just to protect the middle one.

7.
