Stevie Nicks faces wild backlash over Hawaii fires post

Stevie Nicks, the celebrated icon from Fleetwood Mac, has drawn a mixed response among her admirers due to her extensive reflection on the Maui fires, with even her most devoted supporters not hesitating to express their concerns.

The legendary artist took to social media to convey her thoughts regarding the tragic Maui fires, a subject close to her heart. However, her detailed account of how the catastrophe impacted her, particularly in relation to her niece's disrupted holiday plans, has drawn a divisive reaction.

In a post entitled "“Lahaina is not gone ~ It is just away,” Nicks opened up about her personal connection to the coastal town that fell victim to the destructive fires, claiming the lives of at least 96 individuals.

“As I am sure you have heard – the island, Maui, where I own a house I have been staying at since the 80s – and the small village, city, most magical place on earth, Lahaina, burned to the ground over the last few days,” she wrote.

She further explained the distressing situation involving her young niece, her spouse, and their child, who had just embarked on a much-needed vacation before the niece's return to her studies in psychology. Regrettably, their vacation was cut short due to the onset of the fire.

Nicks also delved into the profound connection that the members of Fleetwood Mac share with Maui. “This island, in so many ways, defines Fleetwood Mac and me and our families. My truth was that I wanted a house here just so I could spend time in Lahaina walking the streets; visiting the art galleries – sitting on the rock wall – Most all the opals I wear on my fingers came from a store on Front Street. I hope the sweet lady who owned that store was able to grab all her opals and run. I hope she made it out.”

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Stevie Nicks (@stevienicks)

The response among her fan base has been polarised. Some voiced disappointment with Nicks for placing emphasis on her niece's disrupted vacation rather than the tragic loss of nearly 100 lives in the fires. They also questioned the absence of any links or information directing her substantial Instagram following, which numbers 1.4 million, towards aiding the fire survivors.

One Instagram user commented, “I’ve been a Stevie fan forever and a day but this is Completely tone deaf! There are people who have LOST THEIR HOMES, their livelihood and their loved ones. Regular people – not rich, and not tourists. “Ruining” someone’s well deserved holiday is the absolutely LEAST of it all. True colours are shining and it’s such a disappointment.”

While detractors were vocal, others stood up for Nicks, contending that her personal connection to the island warranted her sharing her story just as much as anyone else – with one post in particular offering a particularly insightful explanation:

"People commenting with criticism: I sincerely understand but what you don’t realize is that this is a woman who doesn’t go on the internet or understand how any of that works. She hand writes these notes to express her heart and has an assistant post them. She has always given back without advertising it. The concept of crowdfunding donations on social media is something she really just has no idea about. If she knew better, I could understand the frustration but she’s just not a part of social media discourse whatsoever. I can guarantee that she is not only giving back but reaching directly out to individuals she has crossed paths with there over the years. Stevie has always been charitable, but has never been a citizen of the internet."

Images: Instagram

Fleetwood Mac star’s cause of death revealed

New details have emerged regarding the cause of death of Fleetwood Mac’s Christine McVie.

McVie passed away at the age of 79 in November 2022, surrounded by her loved ones, after being diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer.

As her family said at the time, “it is with a heavy heart we are informing you of Christine’s death.

“She passed away peacefully at hospital this morning, Wednesday, November 30, 2022, following a short illness. She was in the company of her family.”

And now, The Blast have revealed that the singer’s death certificate confirms that the cause of her death was an ischaemic stroke, with her cancer listed as the secondary cause.

McVie’s cancer was a “metastatic malignancy of unknown primary origin”, meaning that the disease had spread throughout her body but the primary source or tumour could not be detected.

According to the Stroke Foundation, an ischaemic stroke “is the most common type of stroke”, caused by “the blood supply being blocked” and restricted from reaching the brain.

The death certificate - unveiled in court with documents filed to settle McVie’s estate - also noted that McVie suffered from “atrial fibrillation” (otherwise known as AFib), and is explained by the Heart Foundation as being “is a type of arrhythmia in which your heart beats irregularly and often fast.”

The star had been open about her health journey in the months prior to her passing, even telling Rolling Stone that “I’m in quite bad health. I’ve got a chronic back problem that debilitates me. I stand up to play the piano, so I don’t know if I could actually physically do it. What’s that saying? ‘The mind is willing, but the flesh is weak’.”

However, McVie’s friend and bandmate Stevie Nicks wrote - in the wake of McVie’s death - that she “didn’t even know she was ill”, sharing a handwritten statement on social media that read “a few hours ago I was told that my best friend in the whole world since the first day of 1975, had passed away.

“I didn't even know she was ill… until late Saturday night.

“I wanted to be in London; I wanted to get to London - but we were told to wait. So, since Saturday, one song has been swirling around in my head, over and over and over. I thought I might possibly get to sing it to her and so, I’m singing it to her now. I always knew I would need these words one day … it’s all I can do now.”

Images: Getty

Lindsey Buckingham claims Fleetwood Mac didn’t work “on paper”

Fleetwood Mac guitarist and songwriter Lindsey Buckingham has admitted that the band’s unique characters didn’t necessarily fit together.

Reflecting on the band’s success and longevity, the 72-year-old believes that their “synergy” was greater than their individual parts.

He said, "Early on, soon after joining Fleetwood Mac, I realised that we were the kind of group who didn’t – on paper – belong in the same group together.”

"But yet that was the very thing that made us so effective.”

"There was a synergy there, where the whole became more than the sum of its parts. What happens is that you begin to understand that, and accept it as a gift."

Lindsey was ousted from Fleetwood Mac in 2018 due to a reported “disagreement over the band’s upcoming tour,” and was replaced by Crowded House’s Neil Finn.

Lindsey, who released his seventh solo album in September, also claimed that “inside politics” is the reason why Fleetwood Mac haven’t released a studio album since the 2003 release of Say You Will.

Despite receiving international success and recognition during his time in Fleetwood Mac, Lindsey said that losing fans while he pursues his solo project was bound to happen.

He said, “Fleetwood Mac is this big machine, and my solo endeavours are this smaller machine.”

"I’ve always done what I’ve wanted to do, basically, and I think the realisation I had to come to was being willing to lose some of the huge audience Fleetwood Mac have in order to pursue that.”

"It’s just a trade-off you have to be willing to make in order to do things on your own terms."

5 things you didn’t know about Fleetwood Mac

Fleetwood Mac have been together since 1967, so it’s safe to say that the group have some stories. The Grammy-award winning band have had amazing success all around the globe and only a few have managed to see what really goes on behind the scenes. Here are a few things you might not have known about Fleetwood Mac.

1. Founding member Jeremy Spencer left the group in 1971 to join a cult

Jeremy Spencer had missed rehearsal the day before a gig and they were unable to find him for a few days. Once the band did find him, he refused to rejoin the group and they were forced to find a replacement. Spencer’s replacement, Peter Green, made things worse for the group at the time by openly mocking the audience.

2. Mick Fleetwood’s wife, model Jenny Boyd, was having an affair with his best friend and former Fleetwood Mac guitarist Bob Weston through the mid-70s

The pair divorced in 1977, where Fleetwood quickly rebounded from the end of his marriage by becoming involved with Stevie Nicks.

3. “Landslide” was never released as a single and the reason it’s so popular today is largely due to a cover version by the Smashing Pumpkins

Although Billy Corgan recorded a solo recording of the song in 1993, the song was used as a b-side. Later on, in 1994, the Smashing Pumpkins had the song on their compilation Pisces Iscariot. The song became a radio hit, and caused Fleetwood Mac to revisit the song and record a newer version on their live reunion album called The Dance in 1997.

4. Stevie Nicks’ cocaine habit in the ‘70s and ‘80s was so bad that she burned a hole in the cartilage of her nose

Naturally, after hearing this information, Nicks’ was motivated to kick her habit. A plastic surgeon had warned her that she could lose her nose or die.

Nicks told Rolling Stone: "He [the plastic surgeon] said to me, 'The next toot that you do could be your last. The tissue in your nose is very delicate. It could go straight up to your head, and then you could drop to the floor and die a lousy, two-hour death.”

5. Christine McVie wrote “You Make Loving Fun” about her affair with the band’s lighting director, Curry Grant

Grant and McVie’s relationship started while she was still married to John McVie.

The pair remained married while the band was writing and recording Rumours, despite the duo being separated and seeing other people.

Did you know these facts about Fleetwood Mac? Have you ever seen them in concert? Let us know in the comments.

‘Mac and cheese’ pasta

Although this dish contains no cheese, it is bright yellow and creamy, so is reminiscent of conventional mac and cheese. Using gluten-free pasta doesn’t change the texture or taste, because this form of pasta tastes exactly like wheat-based pasta. You can use any shape of pasta, although I prefer the squiggly shapes because they hold onto the sauce well. Cook the sauce first, before you start cooking the pasta, because it will take longer than most pasta varieties to cook.

Serves: 4–6

Ingredients:

2 medium carrots, peeled and roughly chopped

1 cup peeled and cubed butternut pumpkin (squash), seeds removed

1 large onion, peeled and quartered

4–5 garlic cloves, peeled and roughly chopped

1 cup water

1 cup macadamia or cashew nuts

1½ cups rice milk

juice and rind of 1 large lemon

salt, to taste

250 grams/9 ounces (dried) gluten-free pasta

pesto of choice

Method:

1. In a saucepan, combine the carrot, pumpkin, onion and garlic. Pour over the water and place over a medium heat and cook for 20 minutes, or until the vegetables are tender, then remove from the heat.

2. Meanwhile, combine the nuts, rice milk and lemon juice in a blender (reserve the rind for later use). Blend until smooth and creamy.

3. Add the cooked vegetables to the blender and blend again until the mixture is creamy and smooth. Season with salt.

4. Cook the pasta as per the package instructions.

5. Pour the sauce over the pasta and serve immediately topped with the lemon rind and pesto of choice.

Variations

Add a 500-gram (17-ounce) bottle of pasta sauce to the blended sauce before tossing with the pasta to increase nutrient density. Serve with pesto.

To make a delicious soup, simply increase the rice milk to 3 cups and add ½ cup tomato paste to the sauce, heating slowly. Serve with pesto.

Extracted from Feed Your Brain: the Cookbook by Delia McCabe available from www.exislepublishing.com and wherever good books are sold.
Lisa Du is director of ReadyTechGo, a service that helps people gain the confidence and skills to embrace modern technology.

If you own an iPhone or iPad, you've most likely heard of Siri, and maybe even used its functions. For those of you who haven't yet interacted with this feature, allow me to introduce you to your new personal assistant! Siri allows you to utilise a number of features on your Apple device with ease and convenience, by simply holding down your home button, and asking. With the recent release of the new software for your Mac - Mac OS Sierra - you can now have Siri on your computer, also.

How do I access Siri on my Mac?

Firstly, it is important to ensure that your computer can update to Mac OS Sierra. Apple has compiled a clear, useful page here that will tell you whether or not your Mac can support the new software, and you can find it here. 7 year old boy collects over 10,000 food items for charity

Kaden is a 7-year-old boy from Texas who is the founder of “Mac & Cheese and Pancakes”, an initiative that donates children-friendly foods to the local food pantry. Before he started his food initiative, Kaden had been donating for nearly three years to his local food charity, Helping Hands of Rockwell County.

Diana, Kaden’s mum, explained to The Huffington Post that this has been a cause close to Kaden’s heart from an early age. “Kaden has a wonderful heart. He came to me at 4 years old, while still in preschool, and mentioned that he wanted to start a ‘company’ to feed the poor,” Diana said.

“My husband and I are still not sure what he heard or witnessed to feel this way at such a young age.”

They took Kaden to the food pantry and donated some items that were in their kitchen. Kaden enjoyed the trip so much that he regularly asked to revisit and moved from just dropping off food to touring the pantry.

As Kaden spent more time at the food pantry, he felt compassion for the families waiting to receive food and asked about the young children who were in need.

“He also was very aware that many of the food items were not items that those kids could look forward too. Many areas of the shelves sat empty and desperately needed donations in order to get the particular food to the people in need. He grew to have a special place in his heart to take care of those young kids that he had seen waiting on their next meals,” explained Diana.

On the February 2 2017, Kaden launched his food initiative by creating an Amazon wish list with foods that children would be happy eating. The Amazon wish list allows anyone to donate to the cause and the food items are shipped directly to the local pantry.

Kaden also rallied his school, extracurricular, church, family and friend circles to all get on board with his vision and has received a great response from his community.

On February 19, approximately 10,300 items had been donated to “Mac & Cheese and Pancakes”. Although Kaden has reached an incredible benchmark, he will continue to work on his initiative to do all he can to reduce children in his area going without food.

Image credit: Mac & Cheese and Pancakes

Related links:

Woman donates five-pound note, worth £50,000, to charity

Nigerian boy left for dead starts school a year later

Volunteering on a floating hospital in Africa

This food has more salt in it than a Big Mac

What do eight packets of Smith's salted potato chips and two Big Macs have in common?

Both have less salt than an average packet of instant noodles.

It was a finding that stunned researchers at The George Institute for Global Health, when they surveyed 765 noodle products collected from 10 countries between 2012 and 2016; including New Zealand, Australia, China, Costa Rica, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Samoa, South Africa and the UK.

Among the sample set, salt levels in instant noodles were the second highest, with an average packet containing more than 80 per cent of the daily recommended maximum salt intake of 5 grams a day.

Aldi's Simplee 2 Minute Noodles (chicken flavour) was declared one of the "worst offenders" because, based on the serving size provided on the pack, it contained 2.67g salt per serving, more than half a day's worth of salt.

However, if comparing levels based on grams of salt per 100 grams, then Maggi Mi Goreng Fusion Soy & Mild Spice would be considered the saltiest, despite ranking as one of the lowest, based on labelled salt per serve.

"This shows just how confusing it can be for consumers, because there is no clear and consistent labelling on instant noodles," said Clare Farrand, public health nutritionist at The George Institute.

"There is a huge amount of salt in a serving of noodles, but what is more worrying is that in reality people tend to eat the entire packet of noodles, rather than just the recommended serving size, eating even more salt than what is advertised."

A spokeswoman for Maggi said the sodium on the back of Maggi packs was not all sourced from table salt, but also comes from other ingredients within the product.

"We recognise that this category is relatively high in sodium and we have taken significant steps over a number of years to address this," she said.

"Over the last two years we have reduced sodium in our biggest selling product, Maggi 2 Minute Noodles (chicken) by 26 per cent. We will continue to make improvements to the recipe across the entire Maggi 2 Minute range, reducing sodium by up to 20 per cent over the next three years."

German discount giant Aldi, which manufactures Simplee noodles, said it has reviewed the salt content contained in the product range and was "currently working with suppliers to improve the products".

"Aldi's range is extremely dynamic, regularly adapting to match the changing tastes and needs of customers," a spokeswoman said. "We take market cues on labelling and branding and ensure we carry out due diligence when developing packaging of all of our products and labels."

But the fact that individual brands and manufacturers maintain their own labelling standards only causes confusion for consumers, The George Institute found, as some brands listed sodium information "as sold", while others referred to the "as prepared" amount, after water and flavouring are added.

The study also revealed large variations in the amount of salt in instant noodle products around the world. For example, the noodle product with the highest sodium content per 100g was found in Indonesia, containing 7584 milligrams per 100 grams, almost 30 times the amount of sodium found in those with the lowest sodium content in New Zealand, with 249 milligrams per 100 grams.

National food spokesperson for The Heart Foundation Kellie-Ann Jolly said the data did not come as a surprise.

"We've known for some time that about three-quarters of the salt we consume comes from processed foods with most of it hidden in everyday products, including in family favourites like two-minute noodles."

Jolly said that more than half of adults exceeding the recommended daily intake of salt.

Do you think labelling practices shod be standardised, to make it easier to see what is in the food that we eat? Let us know what you think in the comments below.

Written by Lucy Cormack. How to make your computer healthier in five minutes

Lisa Du is director of ReadyTechGo, a service that helps people gain the confidence and skills to embrace modern technology.

A healthy computer is a happy computer. A happy computer will make you happier while using it. But what makes a computer healthy?

Speed is an important indicator of a computer’s performance. A key factor that goes towards keeping a computer speedy is its storage space. With lots of free capacity, your computer will be able to run at full speed. Think of it this way: if you’re carrying a backpack up a hill, and that backpack is filled to the brim with heavy equipment, the weight of the backpack will slow you down.

So what should you do? Empty your backpack of all the unnecessary junk, and only keep the equipment you really need inside.

Here are some good sources of junk to target.

Downloads folder

There are many people who don’t take much notice of their Downloads folder, or who aren’t even aware of its existence! The Downloads folder is the default folder for your Internet downloads - this means that if you download something from online onto your computer without specifying a particular folder to save it in, your computer will automatically save it in the Downloads folder.

You can find the Downloads folder in the sidebar under File Explorer (Windows Users) or Finder (Mac Users).

When you’re surfing the web, you may inadvertently click on a link that downloads a document, image, video, or any other type of file onto your computer. These files will automatically end up in your Downloads Folder... and most of the time, they will be absolute junk! For this reason, you’ll want to clear your Downloads folder out.

However, one thing to keep in mind is that there might be files that you had intended to save, but which happened to end up in your Downloads folder. It’s a good idea, then, to first go through your Downloads folder and copy and paste the files you actually want to keep into another folder (such as your hard drive) before you clear it out. Once you’re sure that everything in there is junk, you can simply delete everything in your Downloads folder.

Recycle bin

This brings us to the next culprit: the Recycle Bin. The Recycle Bin (or Trash for Mac users) is where all your deleted files end up. That’s right - they haven’t actually been deleted yet! What you need to do to be rid of them for good is go into your Recycle Bin and permanently delete them. You can do this by simply deleting the files the way you normally would; by selecting them and pressing DELETE on your keyboard. It's kind of like needing to delete the files twice.

You can find Recycle Bin on your Desktop (Windows Users) and Trash on your Dock (Mac Users)

If these files are in your Recycle Bin, then chances are you’ve already deemed them useless. However, if you’re still uncertain, you can go through Recycle Bin and check to see if there are any files you may have accidentally deleted. You can recover these files by right-clicking on them, and then clicking on “Restore”. They will then appear in their original folder.

Mac users will need to go through each individual file, right-click, and choose "Put back" to recover a deleted file. Furthermore, Mac users can only permanently delete files from Trash by clicking on "Empty Trash". This will delete every item in Trash, so make sure there is only junk in there first.

Your hard drives

For those Windows users who are looking to be really thorough, you can clean up your hard drives with a little tool called Disk Cleanup. It’s a utility that’s been automatically installed onto your Windows computer, which you can use to eradicate some of the more obscure files that are unnecessarily taking up space.

To access this utility, you can simply click on the Start button on the bottom-left corner of your screen, type “Disk Cleanup” into the search bar, and press ENTER on your keyboard. Next:

A window will pop up asking you which hard drive you want to clear out. You can select any hard drive you want, and then go back later for the others - the more hard drives you clear out, the better!

The Disk Cleanup window will appear. This window will show you all the files that you can remove. Click on the box beside any file that you wish to remove

Only the files whose removal won’t affect the operation of your computer will be listed. Thus it’s fine to tick all of the boxes and remove all of the files

Once you’ve ticked every file you wish to delete, the window will show you how much disk space you will free up on this hard drive. Your messages will now be synced between your Apple device and your computer, as well as your contacts, meaning any messages sent between you and them should be viewable on your computer.

If your carrier doesn’t charge you for text messages, then you won’t have to pay a thing for this feature, otherwise the cost to send a text from your computer is the same as from your phone.

Android – MightyText

MightyText is the Android version of messages.
