King Charles' message to Mary as she becomes Queen

In a moment that felt like a page torn from a fairytale, Aussie-born Mary Donaldson has officially ascended to become the Queen of Denmark, marking the beginning of a new chapter for the nation.

Almost two decades after being named Crown Princess, Queen Mary's journey to the throne reached its pinnacle on a joyous day at Copenhagen’s Christiansborg Castle.

The atmosphere was electric as tens of thousands of people gathered to witness the historic occasion. From the balcony, Queen Mary, alongside her husband King Frederik X, waved to the cheering crowd, radiating happiness and a sense of unity. The ceremony, which saw the former queen Margrethe II gracefully abdicate, unfolded with grace and dignity.

The roar of the crowd echoed through the air when Queen Mary took centre stage, symbolising the beginning of a reign that promises to be marked by warmth, wisdom and dedication. With a radiant smile and hand-in-hand with King Frederik, Queen Mary kissed her husband, captivating the hearts of onlookers and setting the tone for a reign filled with love and unity.

The transition from Margrethe II to King Frederik X was a low-key affair, marked by the signing of official documents and a symbolic passing of the torch. The outgoing queen, after gracefully giving her seat to her son, left the room, leaving behind a legacy of over five decades of devoted service to Denmark.

In the wake of this historic moment, messages of support and congratulations poured in from fellow royals, with King Charles and Queen Camilla among the first to extend their best wishes.

“My wife joins me in writing to convey our very best wishes on the day of your accession to the throne of the Kingdom of Denmark,” Charles wrote. “I look forward to working with you on ensuring that the enduring bond between our countries, and our families, remains strong, and to working together with you on issues which matter so much for our countries and the wider world.”

King Harald V of Norway predicted that Queen Mary and King Frederik X would usher Denmark into a "new era" with warmth, wisdom and dedication. The close friendship between royal families was highlighted, underlining the importance of unity and support in the challenges that lie ahead.

Sweden’s King Carl XVI Gustaf conveyed his warm thanks to the outgoing Queen Margrethe for years of good cooperation and offered Queen Mary his heartfelt wishes for success in her new role. The friendship between the nations, he noted, remains warm and constant, a sentiment echoed by many around the world.

As Queen Mary ascends to the throne, this marks an incredible milestone in a fairytale story that has captivated millions for over two decades. With her grace, charm and dedication, Queen Mary is poised to lead Denmark into a bright and promising future, continuing the legacy of a monarchy that remains woven into the fabric of the nation's history.

The world eagerly anticipates the reign of Queen Mary, a symbol of love, unity and a modern fairytale come true.

Images: Getty

Danish royals recreate iconic Diana Taj Mahal photos

Crown Princess Mary and Crown Prince Frederik have marked the beginning of their India tour with some stunning images that throwback to the late Princess Diana.

The royals began their tour on Sunday, and opted for the Taj Mahal in Agra as their starting point. Specifically, the same bench upon which Princess Diana had posed for photos in 1992.

Perched together on the bench, smiling in the sunshine, Mary and Frederik made for quite the happy pair. A far cry from the solo Diana when her image was captured there.

The Danish couple are not the first to have paid tribute at the site, known to many as ‘Princess Di’s Chair’, with the British Royals having posed in previous years too. Most notably, the Duke and Duchess of Wales made their way there in 2016. And in 2008, Sweden’s Crown Princess Victoria visited the world heritage site, as well as the famous bench.

Mary and Frederik appeared to enjoy their day exploring, with the Danish Royal Family’s Instagram account even sharing some photos taken by the princess.

Despite the sightseeing, the main focus of their trip - their first overseas one of the year - is on India’s “green transition”, and strengthening the relationship between their countries.

They’re set to visit New Delhi and Chennai next, and to lay a wreath at the memorial for Mahatma Gandhi 70 years on from his assassination, with a gala dinner to follow.

Mary’s duties as a patron of the Maternity Foundation will see her visit a hospital, and the couple will enjoy a personal tour of the Presidential Palace and garden from India’s President Droupadi Murmu. Chennai will have them for the third and final day of their visit.

Whether or not the couple will share any more of their own pictures from the trip remains to be seen, but fans of the family have been delighted with Mary’s selection so far, taking to Instagram to thank the royals, and to wish them well on the rest of their journey.

“How beautiful - thank you for taking us,” wrote one.

“Beautiful pictures,” said one, with many similar comments scattered throughout as they added, “brings back lovely memories of my own visit there.”

“Fantastic! I’d love to see more of HKH Kronprinsesse Mary’s photos,” chimed one.

“Beautiful, brings back memories of my visits to India, such an incredible country. I hope that Her Majesty the Queen is recovering well, she is always in our thoughts and prayers,” wrote another, referencing the back surgery that Queen Margarethe II had the previous week.

Maragarethe has taken a break from her duties, with the palace confirming that she’s in good condition and “stable under the circumstances.”

Images: Getty, Instagram

Wild allegations suggest Prince Frederik's brother has a "secret crush" on Princess Mary

The feud between Prince Frederik and his younger brother Prince Joachim has made headlines after wild allegations have suggested Joachim has been harbouring a secret crush on his sister-in-law, Princess Mary.

The rumours began when Spanish magazine Vanitatis El Confidencial reported that Joachim had drunkenly tried to kiss the princess.

“With obvious signs of drunkenness, it seems that the youngest son of Queen Margrethe tried to stamp his lips on his sister-in-law’s mouth,” a source told the publication.

“[Mary] got as out of the way as she could and with an unperturbed smile, while [Joachim’s wife] Marie witnessed the embarrassing moment.”

The Spanish magazine went on to allege that Joachim was “deeply in love” with Mary, and “it didn’t help that in 2007 he announced his engagement to a French girl [Marie] with the same name and striking physical resemblance.”

If the shocking allegations prove to be true, it may explain the long-simmering tensions between the royal brothers.

"Fred and Joachim haven't been close for years, and this so-called crush on Mary could very much be the reason why," an insider told Woman's Day exclusively.

"It also explains why Mary and Marie have clearly never been very close, despite being sisters-in-law."

Relationships within the Danish royal family were further fractured recently after Queen Margrethe stripped Joachim’s children of their royal titles.

"Joachim is furious about how it's all played out, and blames Fred's ego and his powers of persuasion over their mother," a source told Woman’s Day.

"Weightless love": Mary celebrates 17 years as Australia's Princess

Mary Donaldson over twenty years ago could have never guessed her life would have been the fairy tale of all fairy tales, when she met her future-husband in 2000 in Sydney bar.

The world has been gripped by Mary ever since she first met the future king of Denmark, Crown Prince Frederik.

The pair met during the Sydney Olympics, at the Opera Bar on the harbour, and a little over four years later, they were walking down the aisle of the Copenhagen Cathedral.

One of the most breath-taking moments was the moment the world saw Mary in her elegant gown by Danish designer Uffe Frank.

It was made of breath-taking ivory duchess satin, and the skirt was lined with 31 metres of tulle.

The bride was walked down the aisle by her father, John Donaldson, who made headlines for his traditional Scottish kilt.

To pay homage to her homeland, Australia, for her wedding bouquet, she opted for a flowing trail of eucalyptus, roses, and a sprig of myrtle from Fredonsborg Palace.

Mary was an ethereal vision, and it was her husband who appeared to shed the first tear.

At their reception, the prince set out to honour his new bride by saying: "I love her, and I will protect her with all my heart. I will do my best to make her feel at home in her new country".

The royal did not skip over Mary’s father, who he addressed in his opening when he said: "Dear John, what a privilege, what a thrill, what an extraordinary feeling of happiness you have created in me," Frederik said.

"One might say Mary also belongs to you - but as of today, she belongs to me and I belong to her."

Prince Frederik also shared the moment he first laid eyes on his wife.

"I found myself in an unknown country amongst happy, festive foreigners," he said.

"My only luggage at that time was my high expectations of my visit and a certain degree of confidence.

"I had only been in Australia two days before our fates were sealed, even though neither of us was aware of it. But your radiance shone clearly for me from our very first meeting.

"Since then I have been blinded by it and totally dependent on it."

Crown Prince Frederik described his wife as the sun that "melts all doubt and darkness".

"I love you Mary. Come, let us go, come let us see. Throughout a thousand worlds, weightless love awaits.

"The joy and the strength you give me is like the sun in the daytime which, with its radiance, melts all doubts and darkness on earth.

"And like the moon at night, you shine with a watchful and delicate beam of gentleness, which extinguishes the mischief and deceit used by the symbols of darkness."

17 years later, it seems love is still at the heart of the royal pair’s relationship.

The couple share four children together, Prince Christian, 15, Princess Isabella, 14, and twins Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine, 10.

Images: Getty

Something rotten in Denmark: More split rumours abound as Princess Mary’s duties ramp up

2019 has been a year indeed for the Danish royal family, and this includes our beloved Aussie Princess Mary.

The Tasmanian-born senior royal member has stepped up and taken a number of duties this year after accepting the responsibility of acting monarch in the event of Queen Margrethe’s absence.

However, a rumour surrounding the future King and Queen of Denmark has swirled around the couple.

Recent rumours have speculated that since Prince Frederik and Princess Mary have appeared on a number of solo appearances lately that point to a potential split between the two.

An insider told Woman’s Day there is unrest from the palace and the pair are “spending nights apart”.

“It doesn’t bode well for Mary, given there have been a lot of rumours in Denmark that they’re spending nights apart,” the source reportedly said.

“The word going around is that he has some kind of bachelor pad close by that he runs off to when things are getting unbearable between them.”

Both Frederik and Mary were last seen together for a public engagement in Poland in November. Since then, Princess Mary has sent the internet buzzing while undergoing her engagements for a royal tour in Indonesia.

While she has been visiting local schools, dignitaries and Indonesian royal family members, Prince Frederik has been at home in Denmark with his family and local events.

However it is unlikely the couple will ever divorce, as they remain committed parents to their four children, Prince Christian, 13, Princess Isabella, 11, and seven-year-old twins Prince and Princess Josepine.

Additionally, it is not the first time the Danish royal family have weathered bitter split rumours.

In December 2018, an insider told New Idea that the couple had been going through issues as a result of Princess Mary feeling the strain of royal duties.

“There are a lot of rumours of tension between Mary and Fred,” the source said.

Thankfully, it seems like the Australian-Denmark love affair that we all fell in love with in 2001 is not to die just yet.

Then-commoner Mary met Prince Frederik during the Sydney Olympics in 2000, at Sydney’s Slip Inn.

Mary, then an advertising account manager, was 28 years old at the time, while Frederik was 31.

They secretly maintained a long distance relationship before going public in 2001, announcing their engagement in 2003.

In 2004, they tied the knot, making international headlines.

The Queen, the Crown Prince couple, and the participants of the hunt watched the proceeds of the day,” an Instagram post on the Danish royal family’s official account read.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by DET DANSKE KONGEHUS (@detdanskekongehus) on Nov 20, 2019 at 11:40am PST

The royal pair has been criticised for setting “poor” example to their four children – Prince Christian, 14, Princess Isabella, 12, and twins Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine, eight – by participating in the hunting parties.

Animal rights organisation People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) told Yahoo Lifestyle that the couple’s support for “violent blood sport” may encourage violent behaviour in their children.

“There is nothing noble about shooting defenseless animals for fun,” a PETA spokesperson said.

“Given the now well-established link between cruelty to animals in childhood and violent behaviour in adulthood, not only is it insensitive for Prince Frederik and Princess Mary to teach their children that killing animals is acceptable, it’s also a poor parenting decision.

“Few people today view hunting as anything other than a violent blood sport, a cheap thrill at taking a life and a display of wanton power over the powerless. It is surely the parents’ responsibility to help children grow into compassionate leaders for their country, with respect for all living beings.”

Throughout the years Princess Mary has also copped backlash over her frequent use of real fur, including seal fur traditionally used in Greenland.

“Times have changed, and unless Danes wish to be viewed as callous and out of touch, they should start creating new traditions that celebrate compassion and replace those tired, cruelly produced furs with new eco-friendly and humane fabrics,” PETA said.

See the images here (warning: graphic).
