Murderer and Eric Clapton drummer dies at 77

Jim Gordon, an infamous session drummer from the ‘60s and ‘70s, has passed away at the age of 77.

Gordon, who in his prime played with the likes of the Beach Boys and George Harrison, died in a psychiatric prison in California’s Vacaville. He had been sentenced to 16 years to life after killing his mother during a psychotic episode in 1983, and it is reported that he never attended parole hearings, or ever left prison.

His publicist Bob Merlis confirmed the news in a statement, where he also explained that Gordon had died of natural causes.

Gordon was born and raised in Los Angeles, and opted to pursue a career as a drummer while a teenager, even turning down a scholarship to UCLA. At just 17, he toured the United Kingdom with the Everly Brothers.

His professional resume only grew from there, with Gordon going on to become on the primary drummers for George Harrison’s All Things Must Pass. Additionally, he contributed to songs by The Beach Boys on Pet Sounds, Cher, Nancy Sinatra, Judy Collins, and Bobby Darin.

In 1970, he formed a group - Derek and the Dominos - with Eric Clapton. Together they wrote the hit ‘Layla’, with Gordon playing both piano and drums. Gordon’s girlfriend at the time, Rita singer Coolidge, claimed she had written the piano section.

Gordon’s relationship with Coolidge ended when he physically assaulted her.

As the years went by, Gordon developed issues with addiction, telling Rolling Stone in 1985 that he considered himself to be an alcoholic, and admitted to using heroin. By the late ‘70s, after he had confessed to hearing voices in his head, his mother had requested he seek help.

“He used to talk to me about hearing voices,” Bobby Whitlock informed Rolling Stone in 2013, “but I told him that it was his consciousness speaking to him. Gordon Ramsay slammed for "very sad" animal video

Gordon Ramsay has caused quite a stir after jokingly picking out a lamb to eat for his next meal.

The celebrity chef shared the TikTok video of himself standing on the fence looking at the lambs in delight as he rubbed his hands together repeatedly saying “yummy yum yum yum yum”.

He then asks "Which one's going in the oven first?" before pointing at a lamb saying “you”.

The 55-year-old then makes his way into their yard which forces the lambs to walk away from him as he says “oven time”.

The video was captioned, “The Lamb sauce was still not found in the making of this video” and in the comment section he posted, “No animals were cooked in the making of this video”.

Despite his joking matter, people were unimpressed with the video which has already been viewed more than 9 million times.

“I’m not even vegetarian but this is very sad,” someone wrote.

“Ok I am not a vegan or vegetarian but that crosses the line,” another commented.

“Ramsay playing with fire,” another wrote.

Others however, loved the video with many commending the chef for his sense of humour.

“Don't play with your food, Gordon,” one read.

“Gordon Ramsay keeping it real as usual,” another wrote.

“Who left Gordon unsupervised,” someone else joked.

Images: TikTok

E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial at 40 – a deep meditation on loneliness, and Spielberg’s most exhilarating film

40 years ago this month saw the release of Steven Spielberg’s E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial – a film about a stranded alien, the boy called Elliott who discovers it and a bond of friendship that remains as magical and heartbreaking as it did back in 1982.

We think of Spielberg movies today as thrilling roller-coaster rides, full of sharks, dinosaurs and swashbuckling archaeologists. Yet for me, E.T. remains Spielberg’s most exhilarating work: a deep meditation on loneliness, friendship and growing up in small-town America.

Aided by John Williams’s Oscar-winning score and Henry Thomas and Drew Barrymore’s touching performances, E.T. feels both of its time and for all time. As Spielberg once said:

I think that E.T. is for the people we are, the people we have been and the people we want to be again.

A child in need of a friend

After the breathless trio of Jaws (1975), Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977) and Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981), Spielberg wanted to make a more intimate film about his isolated childhood in suburban Arizona as he came to terms with the divorce of his parents.

At the same time, he had commissioned a script about a suburban family terrorised by a group of aliens with one befriending the family’s son. The DNA of both stories would make their way into this film.

Like Spielberg, Elliott is a loner. He’s not playing sport, or going out with girls or getting into trouble. He is introverted and thoughtful. And in need of company.

One of Spielberg’s great underrated talents is his direction of children. Many of his films feature young children at their centre – think The BFG (2016), A.I. (2001) and War Horse (2011).

In E.T., Henry Thomas and Drew Barrymore as brother and sister Elliott and Gertie bring credibility and pathos to their roles, fitting seamlessly into the southern Californian ‘burb culture recreated so fondly by the director.

Spielberg’s grasp of childlike wonder is everywhere: notice how he shoots from the children’s eye level and shows adults only from the waist down.

For the first time in his career, Spielberg rejected storyboards and shot scenes chronologically, allowing Thomas and Barrymore time and space to improvise. The domestic and school scenes (hiding E.T. from the mother, tempting it into the house with Reese’s Pieces, freeing frogs destined for dissection) all feel more real because of this.

And what of our alien?

Before E.T., Hollywood saw aliens as hostile critters intent on planetary carnage. The recent extra-terrestrials in Alien (1979) and The Thing (1982) had caused havoc and trauma.

E.T. is different: partly modelled on the facial features of Albert Einstein, it is inquisitive, thoughtful, funny. In the delightful Halloween scene, Elliott throws a white sheet over it as a disguise, and E.T. suddenly spots a child dressed up as Yoda, excitedly repeating “Home! Home!”.

From this moment, Hollywood realised the marketing potential of “cute aliens”; whether Ewoks, Grogu or Toy Story’s “Little Green Men”. It is small wonder that Variety praised E.T. as the “best Disney film Disney never made”.

The alien plays another role too: it fills the void of the absent father.

Paternal lack and the strains it places on families is a familiar trope in Spielberg’s films, from Jurassic Park (1993) to Catch Me If You Can (2002) to Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989).

All we know is that Elliott’s father is “in Mexico, with Sally”: left behind is a stressed mother and bickering siblings.

Some contend that E.T. is a modern-day fairy tale or a Christian parable. For others, it is an illustration of “Reaganite entertainment”, upholding the sanctity of the nuclear family but distrustful of bureaucratic interference and governmental surveillance.

Spielberg at his best

E.T. earned US$800 million at the box office. Adjusted for inflation, four decades on, that is still the fourth highest grossing movie ever.

For some naysayers, its success was further evidence of the special effects-laden, high-concept spectacle film that was beginning to reign in mainstream film culture. But I think E.T. is much more than that: it is a movie with a heart. The special effects are minimal. What counts is the story, and the boy and his friend.

Spielberg’s films are to this day criticised as mawkish and overly sentimental, deliberately engineered to cynically manipulate our emotions. Not so in E.T.: the pleasure is genuine and the tears are earned.

E.T. became a pop culture phenomenon. The shot of Elliott and E.T. on a bike, flying across the moon, remains an iconic image. “Phone home” has become part of our lexicon. Its message of peaceful coexistence between creatures from different worlds today seems more appropriate than ever.

Aliens stranded on earth are a staple of contemporary cinema, from Under the Skin (2013) to The Iron Giant (1999). And Netflix’s current global hit Stranger Things contains a treasure trove of E.T.’s visual references.

Spielberg may have made bigger, louder films, and more historically profound ones, but E.T. endures as his best.

This article originally appeared on The Conversation.

Image: Shutterstock

Gordon Ramsay makes piping hot profit on seaside mansion

The foul-mouthed celebrity chef has flipped his Cornwall mansion for £7.5 million ($NZD 14.5 million), earning him the title of this year’s most expensive sale in the area.

Gordon Ramsay famously spent much of 2020 in the Cornwall home, which made appearances as the backdrop for his clips on Instagram.

According to property records, he went on to sell the six-bedroom, four-bathroom home for the princely sum in 2021, as reported by Cornwall Live.

It also seems to have served him a tidy profit, after he initially spent £4 million ($7 million) on the property - resulting in a cool $7 million) in his pocket, per Domain.

Ramsay’s Cornwall home has made several appearances on his social media accounts, including clips with his daughter Tilly Ramsay. Image: ITV

Though we know very little about the home - besides it also boasting a swimming pool and tennis court - Ramsay’s time in Cornwall has been anything but uneventful.

In 2016, he infuriated his neighbours and local community members while engaged in a eight-month planning battle with council to bulldoze another Cornwall property which housed a 1920s-built home called Lanarth.

The Michelin star chef won his fight, levelling the home and replacing it with a new mansion which he still owns.

Even more recently, Ramsay sparked ire among the seaside community after appearing on radio and saying: “Trust me, I absolutely love Cornwall, it’s just the Cornish I can’t stand.”

Image: @gordongram (Instagram)

“He’s not a cowboy, he’s an actor”: Jane Campion hits back at Sam Elliott

Director Jane Campion has called out actor Sam Elliott after he criticised her film The Power of the Dog.

Campion called Elliott “a little bit sexist” and a “b****” a week after he slammed her film for being filmed in New Zealand and its theme of repressed homosexuality, claiming she didn’t know anything about the American West.

The New Zealand director responded to Elliott’s criticism over the weekend while speaking at the Directors Guild of America awards in Los Angeles.

“I’m sorry, he was being a little bit of a B-I-T-C-H. Couple claim Gordon Ramsay ruined their wedding

“There’s no compromise”: Gordon Ramsay talks about his new 5th son and his love of family

Gordon Ramsay is known for his angry and uncompromising nature, but his TV persona is a very different man to the one his family know and love. This is especially the case when he demanded to be in the delivery room for the birth of his fifth son after not being there for the birth of his other four children.

"Tana didn't f---ing want me there!" cried Ramsay.

He made sure history wouldn’t repeat itself 17 years after their fourth child.

"I said, 'F--k it, I'm going to be there'," he says, and his wife Tana happily gave in.

Despite Ramsay’s best efforts to be present in the delivery room, the reality of a c-section proved to be too much and he fainted for the first time in his life.

"It was hot in there, there was no air-conditioning, and the floor looked like the middle of a f---in' abattoir," he recalls to Now To Love.

"I'm not good at that stuff. I know my strengths and that was my weakness."

Ramsay made sure he learned from his fathers mistakes, as his father was a “hard drinking womaniser” who never owned a home. This drove Ramsay to purchase his first flat when he was just 19, making sure his future was already different from his parents.

"I learnt how to become a great dad," he says, "opposite to what I experienced."

As Ramsay divides his time between London and Los Angeles, he makes sure his kids get his best mood.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Gordon Ramsay (@gordongram) on Dec 24, 2019 at 6:55am PST

"I don't see them as much as Tana," explains Ramsay, "so when I do see them, I don't want fall-outs."

The happy couple definitely have their hands full with 22-year-old Megan, 20-year-old twins Holly and Jack, 18-year-old Matilda and 1 year old Oscar, but wife Tana is well aware people have the wrong perception of her husband.

"When Megan brings a boy home you can see in his eyes, he's terrified, but Gordon will be the first to make him feel at home. How Gordon Ramsay offended fans with this 9-word comment

He is famously known for his foul mouth, but celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay is facing backlash after offending vegans everywhere with nine words in one tweet.

The controversy began after a fan sent the chef a photo of their vegan lasagne on Twitter recently and asked him for his opinion.

The father-of-four responded on Twitter, writing: “I’m a member of PETA! People eating tasty animals ...”

I’m a member of PETA ! People eating tasty animals...... https://t.co/t9xCuVWDtq
— Gordon Ramsay (@GordonRamsay) February 2, 2018

While many meat-loving fans found Ramsay’s comments funny and responded with words of support, it didn’t take long for the backlash to begin.

A twitter user responded: “Alright. I love you but you hating on vegans is getting out of hand.” Another wrote: “You’re just a desperate individual intimidated by the rise of the #vegan movement. It’s the future, you should embrace it.”

“Vegan is the future, more young people than ever before, it’s healthier, good for the planet and even better for the animals,” another said.

The real PETA even got wind of the situation and weighed in, posting: “Oh, dear, Gordon. We’ve heard that old line before. While you’re spending time mocking the future #vegan we’re betting you one day become, most chefs are exploring healthy, animal- & environment-friendly #PlantBased dishes.”

Veganism is a growing trend worldwide. According to Roy Morgan research, the number of Australians eating a mainly vegetarian diet increased by over 23 per cent in the last four years.

Gordon Ramsay reveals weight loss: "I was so fat"

While he might be world-renowned for his exploits in the kitchen, celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay has been attracting just as much attention for his gruelling fitness regime.

The multiple-time Michelin star winner has slimmed down considerably, losing 20kg. Reports suggest a comment from his wife Tana prompted the move.

“Tana was not impressed with the way I was,” Ramsay told Dailymail.

“I was overweight, 18 stone. I looked like a sack of s***. I look at the pictures and think, 'How did Tana stay around?' Because Tana has got better-looking and more gorgeous. And there she is, getting in bed with a fat f***.”

Today Ramsay weights in much lighter, and regularly competes in Ironman events.

“I started focusing on getting super-fit five or six years ago when my life got super-busy. You get consumed by the work,” he said.

“You get sucked up. You get drawn in. All of a sudden your 'me time' is zero. There was no breathing space, no down time, no time to even think straight. It all started hitting me hard. I didn't panic, but my head was not in the game.”

Ramsay offered some advice for people on a similar journey.

“Take a couple of glasses before you eat, it just stops you eating a third more. You feel better but eat less,” he says.

What are your thoughts?

I rode 200km on my bike for charity

Wendy Gordon, 61, pushed herself to the limit to ride 200km for the inaugural “Ride to Conquer Cancer" charity fundraiser to raise money for the Chris O’Brien Lifehouse.

"You can't be serious!"

"Impossible!"

"I don't believe it!"

These were the reactions of my family. My husband said nothing. Too shocked. I knew it sounded ridiculous.

But I had already confided in one other. He said, "Of course you can! You will do it! How much time do you have?" "Eight months" I replied. And so it began ….

The next week I turned up at my indoor bike training class with one goal, and this one person who believed in me, my trainer: I would ride in the inaugural "Ride to Conquer Cancer", a bike ride event over one weekend. Two hundred kilometres. I would raise money to help bring into being the Chris O'Brien Lifehouse, a centre for excellence in research and treatment for cancer sufferers.

Yes, I had just turned 61. No, I didn't have a bike. No, I had not ridden a bike since I was twelve. Never had a bike with gears, never had cleats.

My training began, hour long sessions, twice a week, then three times a week. Then two hour sessions. Four hours on Saturday and Sunday afternoons as well. Cross training, resistance training to simulate hills, training in pedalling techniques, learning to use different muscle groups to avoid fatigue, speed training, planning nutrition and hydration, monitoring heart rate, learning the warm-up and cool down exercises, pacing myself, avoiding cramps.

Who knew there was so much to it? I had thought it would be just to get on a bike and keep going.

Guidance to buy a bike. Courage to start riding outside …specialist bike paths, around the lakes, along the river, then the road. Twenty kilometre rides in heat, with wind. Building up to eighty kilometres at a time, ninety kilometres. Learning how and when to change gears, adapting to cleats, leaning into curves, body position …. Inevitable tumbles, some bad falls. Impossible hills. Heart lurching as I was attacked time and again by swooping magpies in spring, snapping at my helmet, sounding like a cracking whip!

Many adventures, new friends. But lots of blood, sweat and tears.

In native bushland, on a bike path, swerving around a bend, I see a bride spreading out her gown – with her photographer …. No time to stop, so a successful swerve into the bush and out again. Same for a family of ducklings. Again for the young lovers listening to their music, the old couple …. Why on a bike path?!

Ah, but the small child … running straight into the bike path! Another swerve, but it did not feel right. Something was wrong. This was not just long grass alongside the bike path! I was sinking, sinking into a canal of murky water, cleats still attached to bike. I struggled to keep my head up, grabbed some reeds. How to unclip cleats, and free myself from the bike...? Finally I emerged, a horrifying sight of green slime trailing from my helmet, my face, my clothes, my bike – streamers announcing to all the folly of my undertaking. The child looked at me in terror.

Flinging off as much slime as I could, embarrassed beyond words, praying my bike, gears, brakes - everything – would still work, I hastened from the scene, praying also that my remote car lock and my mobile phone would survive their dunking, praying that I would not meet anyone I knew. All was well. A hurried change of bike clothes in the car (yes, at my age!) and a grim determination to finish my training plan for the day kept me at it. "Think of your reason for doing it!" I told myself.

The months passed, and as the day approached I confided in my trainer: "Do you know they have cars come along to pick up any who can't finish? I don't want to be in the 'sweep-up'! And I don't want to be last!" He promised: "You won't be swept up, and you won't be last!"

As the day approached I started to pray that I would be sick, unable to compete, that something would happen so that I could withdraw honourably. I became terrified. Two hundred kilometres for a novice was ridiculous!

The day before the event we had to take our bikes to the starting park, and lock them in for an early start. The weather was horrendous. Biting wind, gale force at times, sheets of rain, all buffeting the car as I drove down, black ice in the nearby hills. I will never finish the event, I thought glumly. But surely they will cancel if the weather is bad? This might be my answer!

The next day dawned, calm and still, perfect weather for riding. As we gathered, all 1600 of us, I noted that they were mostly very athletic looking young people, with a smattering of older ones who looked as though they had been riding all their lives. Fear gripped me. But we were riding for those who had cancer, the most difficult journey of all. I could do it. And I would.

We were away. I followed my training, pacing myself, recalling with clarity my trainer's instructions, and everything came together. I reminded myself of my reason for riding. The cancer journey is harder. Keep going. On hills I overtook the younger riders, those who had not trained as much ("just jump on a bike and keep going"). Down hills I flew, setting new speed records for myself!

It was exhilarating, amazing. The kilometres flew past. I finished the Saturday's 105 kilometre ride by lunch – and was in the first third of the field. Would the Sunday ride be more difficult? No, I had prepared well, trained to reach my peak on this weekend. I finished by lunch again, also in the first third of riders. Reaching the finish line to the cheers of the spectators was very moving, the climax to the most difficult thing I have ever done, and the most satisfying and fulfilling. This was my personal "Amazing Ride"!

I did not know it then, but my sister-in-law would be one of the first to be treated at the newly built Chris O'Brien Lifehouse, which made my amazing ride worth every ache and pain, every difficulty, and all the blood, sweat and tears. My ride was my gift to her and to all who are on the hardest journey of all.

Gordon Ramsay blasts Jamie Oliver over comment about his family – demands apology

Celebrity chefs Jamie Oliver and Gordon Ramsay have a history of feuding with each other.

In March earlier this year, Ramsay appeared on The Nightly Show where he made jokes about Oliver’s restaurants and called him “fat”.

In August, The Sun asked Oliver if he wanted to respond to Ramsay’s taunts but Oliver declined.

“I was doing TV years before him, so maybe five years ago it would have bothered me and I may have responded,” said Oliver.

“But he’s got four kids and I’ve got five kids, and I don’t want to be slagging off some kids’ dad on telly. It’s not nice.”

However, Ramsay took this response as an attack on his family and in a recent interview with Radio Times, he demanded that Oliver apologise to him and his wife Tana.

“To judge someone else’s family on the amount of kids you have … Boys will always fight and butt heads but Tana was mortified. I mean really mortified,” said Ramsay.

A report by The Mirror on the incident noted that Tana suffered a miscarriage in 2016.

Ramsay further criticised Oliver for his involvement in promoting healthier eating and lower sugar consumption.

“None of that was spoken about when he was label-slapping with (UK supermarket chain) Sainsbury’s for 10 years,” Ramsay told Radio Times.

“And no disrespect, but we’re chefs, not politicians,” added Ramsay. “Sadly, the only time he opens his mouth is when he’s got something to promote.”

Ramsay did the interview while promoting his new two-part documentary Gordon Ramsay on Cocaine.

The documentary will explore the issue of cocaine use in the restaurant industry.

Jamie Oliver has not yet responded publicly to Ramsay’s comments.

Do you think Jamie Oliver's comment was offensive? Tell us in the comments below.
