From cheeky thrill to grande dame – the Moulin Rouge celebrates 135 years of scandal and success

Will Visconti, University of Sydney

When the Moulin Rouge first opened on October 6 1889, it drew audiences from across classes and countries.

The Moulin offered an array of fin-de-siècle (end-of-the-century) entertainments to Paris locals and visitors. Located in Montmartre, its name, the “red windmill”, alluded to Montmartre’s history as a rural idyll. The neighbourhood was also associated with artistic bohemia, crime, and revolutionary spirit. This setting added a certain thrill for bourgeois audiences.

From irreverent newcomer to a French institution, the Moulin Rouge has survived scandal, an inferno and found new ways to connect with audiences.

Red and electric

In 1889, the Moulin Rouge was not the only red landmark to open in Paris. The Eiffel Tower, built as part of the Universal Exhibition and originally painted red, had opened earlier that same year. What set them apart, however, was their popularity.

The Moulin Rouge was an instant hit, capitalising on the global popularity of a dance called the cancan. Dancers like Moulin Rouge headliner La Goulue (“The Glutton”, real name Louise Weber) were seen as more appropriate emblems for the city than the Tower, which many considered an eyesore.

In an illustration from Le Courrier Français newspaper, a dancer modelled on a photograph of La Goulue holds her leg aloft, flashing her underwear with the caption “Greetings to the provinces and abroad!”.

Every aspect of the Moulin spoke to the zeitgeist, from its design to the performances, the use of electric lights that adorned its façade, and its advertising.

Its managers, the impresario team of Joseph Oller and Charles Harold Zidler, had a string of successful venues and businesses to their names. They recognised the importance of modern marketing, using print media, publicity photographs, and posters to spark public interest.

Among the most iconic images of the Moulin is Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec’s 1891 poster. At its centre is La Goulue, kicking her legs amid swirling petticoats.

She certainly can cancan

Found primarily in working-class dance halls from as early as the 1820s, the cancan became a staple of popular entertainment the world over.

Part of the dance’s thrill lay in the dancers’ freedom of movement and titillation of spectators, as well as its anti-establishment energy. Women used the cancan to thumb their nose at authority via steps like the coup de cul (“arse flash”) or coup du chapeau (removing men’s hats with a high kick).

The cancan was not the only attraction at the Moulin. There were themed spaces, sideshows, and variety performances ranging from belly dancers and conjoined twins to Le Pétomane (“The Fartomaniac”) who was a flatulist and the highest-paid performer. People watching was equally popular.

Scandals, riots, and royalty

Over the years, the Moulin has been no stranger to controversy.

In its early years, it cultivated an air of misbehaviour and featured in pleasure guides for visiting sex tourists.

In 1893 it hosted the Bal des Quat’z’Arts (Four-Arts Ball) held by students from local studios. Accusations of public indecency were made against the models and dancers in attendance, and violent protests followed after the women were arrested.

In 1907 the writer Colette appeared onstage at the Moulin in an Egyptian-inspired pantomime with her then-lover, Missy, the Marquise de Belbeuf. When the act culminated in a passionate kiss, a riot broke out.

Historical footage shows the Moulin Rouge as it was.

Kicking on and on

Over time, the Moulin Rouge shows changed their format to keep pace with public taste, though the cancan remained. The venue hosted revues and operettas, and various stars including Edith Piaf, Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra and Liza Minnelli.

Famous guests have included British royalty: from Edward VII (while Prince of Wales) to his great-granddaughter, Queen Elizabeth II, and her son, Prince Edward.

Since its opening, the Moulin’s fortunes have waxed and waned.

In 1915 the Moulin Rouge burned down but was rebuilt in 1921. Its famous windmill sails fell off overnight earlier this year but were swiftly repaired.

In the 1930s, it survived the Depression and rise of cinema (also capturing the attention of several filmakers). It also survived the Nazi occupation of Paris in the 1940s.

By the early 1960s, Jacki Clerico was managing the Moulin’s show after his father had revamped the venue as a dinner theatre destination. The younger Clérico oversaw additions like a giant aquarium where dancers swam with snakes, and its now-famous “nude line” – a chorus of topless dancers – in its shows.

In 1963, the Moulin Rouge struck upon a winning formula: revues, all named by Clérico with titles beginning with the letter “F” – from Frou Frou to Fantastique and Formidable. Since 1999, the revue Féerie (“Fairy”, also a French genre of stage extravaganza) has been performed almost without interruption.

Ticket sales were boosted thanks to Baz Luhrmann’s 2001 film Moulin Rouge! and more recently Moulin Rouge! The Musical.

Since COVID, the Moulin Rouge management have diversified. The windmill’s interior has been rented out via AirBnB and the Moulin’s dance troupe has performed on France’s televised New Year’s Eve celebrations. This year, the Moulin Rouge and its dancers were part of the Paris Olympics celebrations, dancing in heavy rain.

Though people have come to appreciate the Eiffel Tower too, the Moulin Rouge can still argue its status as the pinnacle of live entertainment in the French capital: immediately recognisable, internationally visible, and quintessentially Parisian.

Will Visconti, Teacher and researcher, Art History, University of Sydney

This article is republished from The Conversation under a Creative Commons license. Glimmer of hope: World reacts to Federer's sad news

Swiss tennis legend Roger Federer has posted a new video to his Instagram account giving his legions of fans an update as to his health status.

“I will be on crutches for many weeks and out of the game for many months,” the 20-time Grand Slam title winner said.

But in even sadder news, many sports commentators are now asking whether we’ll ever see Federer playing competitively again – given that the Swiss star is now 40 and the knee surgery will take him out of the sport for “many months.”

Federer's decision immediately rules him out of the US Open, where he has been champion five times and which starts in two weeks.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Roger Federer (@rogerfederer)

“I’ve been doing a lot of checks with the doctors on my knee ... Even the last fortnight I think I've grown as a person," she said.

"I've certainly been able to use my experience as a tennis player to get me through some tough matches this week.

"I felt like I was able to get better and better with each match and trust myself more and more each and every time I stood out on the court."

Absolute idiot: Grand slam birthday stitch-up puts Nick Kyrgios on the back foot

It may not have been the 25th birthday Nick Kyrgios had in mind, but it went from bad to worse on Monday night when a fellow tennis star posted a particular photo.

As countless people wished the talented Aussie a happy birthday, Greek tennis champ Stefanos Tsitsipas decided to go down a different path with his Instagram upload.

Tsitsipas’ post was an image of himself holding up a cardboard sign which he captioned: “Lift others up”.

View this post on Instagram

‎Lift others up 🙌🏼 . . . . . . . . 💭: @dudewithsign | #dudewithsign

A post shared by Stefanos Tsitsipas (@stefanostsitsipas98) on Apr 27, 2020 at 2:07am PDT

The only problem was, the sign contained a mobile number, which fans quickly realised belonged to the one and only Nick Kyrgios. Kyrgios commented on the post: “You are an absolute idiot, everyone stop calling me!!!!!”

The number was quickly disconnected after what most likely was a never ending hoard of phone calls and text messages.

Of course, not all of the birthday wishes directed towards him caused a headache, as many took to social media to say happy birthday in a much more conventional way.

Coronavirus RNA found on cruise ship 17 days after passengers abandoned liner

Coronavirus RNA has been determined to have the ability to live for up to 17 days among surfaces after health authorities studies the Diamond Princess cruise ship.

The disease can survive longer than research has previously shown, new data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has shown to us on Monday in new data.

The study sought out to show how the Japanese and U.S government’s efforts to contain the COVID-19 outbreaks on the Carnival-owned Diamond Princess ship in Japan and the Grand Princess ship in California has been.

RNA is the genetic material of the virus that causes COVID-19, and was “identified on a variety of surfaces in cabins of both symptomatic and asymptomatic infected passengers up to 17 days after cabins were vacated on the Diamond Princess but before disinfection procedures had been conducted,” the researchers wrote.

The CDC added the genetic material of the virus that specifically causes COVID-19 revealed that there was no indication that the virus can “spread by surface”.

They also added researchers were unable to “determine whether transmission occurred from contaminated surfaces,” and that more studies focussing on whether COVID-19 can be spread through touching surfaces on cruise ships was warranted.

“COVID-19 on cruise ships poses a risk for rapid spread of disease, causing outbreaks in a vulnerable population, and aggressive efforts are required to contain spread,” the data report read.

The CDC has urged people to stay away from cruise ships at this time if they are part of the more vulnerable population.

Researchers at the national Institutes of Health, CDC, UCLA and Princeton University previously found that COVID-19 can last up to three days on plastic and stainless steel.

The study also determined the RNA of the virus decreases over time on plastic and stainless steel.

The new study set out to understand just how “transmission occurred across multiple voyages of several ships.” It noted at least 25 cruise ship voyages had confirmed cases of COVID-19 as of March 17.

All of these cases where either detected during or after the cruise trip ended.

Almost half, 46.5%, of the infections aboard the Diamond Princess were asymptomatic when they were tested.

The study revealed it partially explaining the “high attack rate” of the virus among passengers and crew.

On February 4, all 3,700 passengers and crew of the Diamond Princess were quarantined at a Japanese port after a passenger had been diagnoses with COVID-19 after returning to Hong Kong.

What resulted was the largest cluster of confirmed coronavirus cases outside of China at the time, with more than 800 passengers and crew eventually going on to become infected.

Nine people died due to the outbreak after disembarking the ship. Research revealed that 712 of 3,711 people on the Diamond Princess, or 19.2% were infected by COVID-19.

78 cases were also found on the Grand Princess, which was force to moor off the coast of California after two passengers tested positive when they disembarked the vessel.

The 78 cases tied back to the ship across separate voyages. California officials allowed the ship to remove all passengers from the vessel at the Port of Oakland.

The Diamond Princess and Grand Princess has accounted for more than 800 total COVID-19 cases, including 10 deaths.

Mums slam "secretly underwhelming" tourist attractions

Mumsnet is a forum where mothers gather together and voice their opinions on a range of topics, including what tourist destinations are “secretly underwhelming”.

This topic spread like wildfire, and the answers will either have you agreeing or shaking your head in disapproval.

In a thread titled “What famous landmark or must visit place/thing were you secretly underwhelmed by?”, Mumsnet user Midge1978 elaborates on her provocative question.

“I went to Stonehenge this year and whilst I was trying to get in touch with my inner druid, trying to project historical importance and mystery onto the place, I just couldn’t escape the feeling that I was just looking at some very old stones and it was actually (whisper) a little bit boring!!” she said.

“My husband thought it was all marvellous though so I have never told him!!!”

Others were quick to voice their opinions, even knocking the Great Barrier Reef.

“The Grand Canyon and the Great Barrier Reef,” said one mum, declining to elaborate.

Another mum seconded her, “Yes, Great Barrier Reef – sadly, and only because there is so much coral die back it is depressing. Genuinely disappointing as diving here was a long-held dream of mine.”

Paintings were even on the list, with some mentioning The Scream.

Midge agreed and shared her experience of seeing The Mona Lisa.

“Oh gosh yes The Mona Lisa – queued for bloody ages to see a small dull painting that I had already seen emblazoned over every item in the gift shop!” she said.

“The pyramids/sphinx,” said another mum. “I expected a mystical, magical place in the desert. I got … lots of beggars/sales people/McDonalds. Gutted.”

Another mum agreed: “Yep Midge, sorry. I have a fabulous photo that everyone aaahs over of the sphinx with a pyramid behind it and a clear blue sky. When I look at it all I can think is “I was standing in front of McDonald’s when I took that …”

However, some comments called out the lack of culture in Australia.

“The whole of Australia frankly – no culture at all apart from the Aboriginal history,” someone wrote.

“The Aborigines were treated like sh*t by the white Australians which disgusted me. Didn’t hear a single one have a good thing to say about the indigenous population – notice how there’s never any on Australian TV.”

New Zealand made the list too.

“Another vote for the various different landmarks in New Zealand. I went expecting awe-inspiring views and to be blown away by the scenery, but I wasn’t,” one said.

“It’s all really nice, don’t get me wrong. But the mountain views aren’t as good as those in the European Alps, the fjords aren’t as good as Norway’s, various bits of Scotland etc. It’s like a 7 out of 10 of everything all in one country, compared to 9 or 10 out of 10 of other things scattered around the world.”

Rafael Nadal breaks down after "emotional" US Open win

Rafael Nadal has claimed his 19th Grand Slam championship and was overcome with emotion after realising what he has achieved.

The 33-year-old was playing in his 27th major final but 23-year-old Medvedev fought him every step of the way.

The match went for a shocking five hours, but eventually Nadal was able to nab the victory.

The emotion of the occasion was too much for the tennis legend to bear as a highlight reel of his slam wins played inside the stadium after he claimed match point. Tears rolled down his face as Nadal gracefully thanked the crowd.

“It has to be one of the most emotional nights of my tennis career,” Nadal said. “This victory means a lot and especially with the way the match became so difficult, so tough ... it has been a crazy match, no? I’m just emotional.”

Witnessing history, from 1 to 19....@RafaelNadal | #USOpen pic.twitter.com/33kDYn4kwf
— US Open Tennis (@usopen) 9 September 2019

It was a tough match for Nadal after the crowd booed him in the fifth set after the New York crowd thought that the star was wasting time as he went to get a new racquet while Medvedev was serving.

However, he didn’t flinch and went on to take the victory.

It’s clear that Nadal had his eye on the prize, as his other opponents from this past fortnight have struggled to find the words to describe Nadal’s technique.

Diego Schwartzman suggested Nadal was “like a lion in the middle of the jungle” while Matteo Berrettini called him “the greatest fighter ever in this sport.”

“It’s tough to find words,” added Medvedev. “He’s one of the greatest champions in the history of our sport. He’s just a machine, a beast on the court.”

Tennis writer sparks huge Anna Kournikova debate – do you agree?

New York Times tennis reporter Ben Rothenberg has caused a bit of a stir after he made a shortlist of his most influential women in tennis history.

It all started with a simple tweet from the International Federation of Tennis, who were celebrating Chinese New Year.

The tweet was about Li Na, who was the first Chinese Grand Slam Champion. Na also went on to win the French Open in 2011 and the Australian Open in 2014 before retiring the same year.

Crushing stereotypes and inspiring millions, Li Na’s extraordinary journey to becoming China’s first-ever Grand Slam champion is a story like no other 🇨🇳#ChineseNewYear pic.twitter.com/8DGHCSXSlX
— ITF (@ITF_Tennis) 5 February 2019

This tweet was quick to make its way through the tennis media, with Women’s Tennis Association Insider podcast host Courtney Nguyen saying that Na was a lock for the top 10 most important women in tennis history.

“Be the bird that sticks out.”

Easily shortlisted for Top 10 most important women in tennis history. https://t.co/X7CoYJhJiM
— Courtney Nguyen (@FortyDeuceTwits) 5 February 2019

Rothberg decided to join in and named his top 10, which included Serena Williams, Steffi Graf and early 20th century champion Suzanne Lenglen.

However, one name caught everyone’s attention. Anna Kournikova, who came in before Serena Williams on his list at number 8 and 9 respectively. The list is in chronological order, and not the order that Rothberg favours the players.

Oooh ooh I'll play this game ok:

Lenglen
Gibson
BJK
Evert
Navratilova
Graf
Seles
Kournikova
Serena
Li
— Ben Rothenberg (@BenRothenberg) 5 February 2019

Safe to say, tennis fans weren’t happy with Rothberg’s inclusion of Kournikova.

...Kournikova? pic.twitter.com/luZwseJJJs
— Eve Honeywell (@captcitrus) 5 February 2019

However, Rothenberg explained that she “paved the road for a massive post-Soviet wave that followed, completely redefined what success and value could mean in women’s tennis and changed how the sport was seen”.

Kournikova was one of the world’s most known tennis players, although she never won a singles title. She had much more success in doubles, reaching world number one and winning the Australian Open doubles title with Martina Hingis in 1999.

Rothenberg also pointed out that there’s a difference between importance and performance.

Ok upon further review, Graf is out, Venus is in.

Everyone is getting mad about Kournikova, but “most important” is a *very* different metric from “winningest” or “most impressive.”
— Ben Rothenberg (@BenRothenberg) 5 February 2019

Ken Merritt, who coached Kournikova, explained the influence that she had on the world in a 2015 interview with CNN.

"Construction workers were watching tennis, business people were watching tennis.
