Shocking theory behind grandma's broad daylight murder-suicide

Warning: This article contains distressing content that some readers may find upsetting.

Court papers have revealed the sinister reason behind why a grandmother allegedly killed her daughter-in-law before killing herself.

Terminally ill ex-probation officer Kathleen Leigh, 65, fatally shot 45-year-old Marisa Galloway, who shares a child with Leigh’s son, Zachariah Reed, on a New York street before taking her own life.

Now Ms Galloway’s grieving parents, Nancy and John, have filed an emergency court petition claiming Mr Reed has run off to his “multimillion-dollar home” in Chicago with their grandchild Lili under the pretext of “mourning” his mother’s death.

He has also barred the Galloways from any contact, either in person or via technology, with the child.

“Clearly, [Mr Reed’s] mother had a deliberate plan to kill Marisa in order to provide custody for her son,” the court papers charge, according to an exclusive report by the New York Post.

“Unfortunately, [Mr Reed] has demonstrated an absolute intention to further those same goals of his mother as he has refused to provide us with any access to Lili at all in almost 3 weeks.”

According to legal papers filed on Friday, the grandparents, who live a 12 hour drive away in New Jersey, are asking a Manhattan Supreme Court judge to pass on Marisa’s parenting time, hashed out in a 2022 custody agreement with Mr Reed.

They are also asking that Mr Reed be forced to live in the New York until Lili is 18 so that she can keep a close relationship with her grandparents and with her half-sister, Mariel, the 1-year-old daughter Marisa had with a sperm donor who currently lives with the grandparents.

“While Marisa was always the best mother, we would love to be involved with all aspects of taking care of an infant, toddler, and ultimately the little girl that Lili currently is,” Nancy wrote.

Nancy said she is “extremely uncomfortable” being forced to file the petition but worried Lili would become estranged from her mum’s side of the family if they didn’t intervene.

The grandmother laid out the history of Marisa and Mr Reed’s “tumultuous relationship” since the pair split and their “contentious” custody battle while she also claimed the pair dated before Marisa became pregnant but said their relationship ended “driven by the interference of [Mr Reed’s] mother.”

On the day of the heinous crime on July 26th 2024, Marisa was loading her car and had put Mariel in her seat with plans to visit her parents for a few days.

She was approached by Leigh while she was putting something in the boot, and shot her once in the back of the head and again in the back before taking her own life.

Before her heinous crime, Leigh scrawled a seven-page letter “For Police” describing how she felt Marisa was trying to alienate Lili from her dad and saying she suspected Marisa of abusing Lili, despite child services clearing Marisa in two probes launched by Mr Reed.

“She took away the child’s mother in order to make her son happy … it’s shocking,” a law-enforcement source had told the New York Post of Leigh right after the alleged murder-suicide.

92-year-old grandma steals hearts in Paris

Australian judo champion Aoife Coughlan stunned Olympic audiences with a tense showdown against German athlete Miriam Butkereit in Paris, but some audience members had their attention drawn elsewhere.

The 28-year-old Aussie was holding her own against Butkereit, until sudden-death overtime saw Butkereit, 30, win at the last second in the women's 70kg judo round of 16.

Despite the unbelievable scenes inside Grand Palais Éphémère in Champ de Mars in Paris, some spectators were quick to notice a special guest hovering behind the TV cameras, who has since drawn the world's attention.

Coughlan's 92-year-old grandmother Pam Coughlan, from Ireland, scored a prime position mat-side to watch her granddaughter compete, with the judoka's cousin explaining just how his grandmother secured her prime, and unusual, spot on social media.

My 92 year old granny is at the Olympics today to watch her Australian grandchild in the Judo.

She persuaded them to let her sit here. Never doubt the Dublin Granny," Mark Coughlan wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

Wearing sunglasses inside and a red, French-style beret to complete her look, Coughlan's grandmother Pam kept a watchful eye on her granddaughter, with Mark commentating from at home.

"Judo is quicker than I knew, and harsh," Coughlan's cousin explained to his social media followers. "Round two 20 minutes after round one: Aoife lost on Judo's equivalent of extra time and penalties in the last minute."

"Massive pride. What an achievement. Olympian and hugs from Granny afterwards."

Pam Coughlan, Mark said, will "have to do the Paris look-around now" as she did eight years ago, when she flew aged 83 to spectate at Rio 2016.

Mark's Twitter thread about his grandmother quickly went viral, with many applauding the older woman for her supportive nature.

One fan wrote, "Dublin Granny…need you say more??" while another added, "All olympic grannies who can manage to attend in person should be given front row seats."

Cancer survivor becomes world's strongest great-grandmother

An Australian great-grandmother has become a world-record holder for an impressive feat in the gym.

Heather Maddern, 80, found a new love of weightlifting after she decided to hit the gym to regain strength after beating cancer three times.

Now, she is officially the world's strongest great-grandmother.

"I hold the Australian and world record for an 80-year-old lady. It's amazing," she told A Current Affair.

"I just absolutely love the life I am living and I put it all down to powerlifting."

Maddern, who suffers from Parkinsons, lifted the record-breaking 80kgs in Brisbane at a powerlifting competition, saying she is "absolutely chuffed" to break the world record for her age group.

Reflecting on the moment she broke the record, Maddern said, "I just put it [the bar] down and went through the crowd with a big smile on my face, I was absolutely chuffed."

Before the great-grandmother discovered her love for lifting weights, she was barely able to walk up and down stairs due to extensive chemotherapy and radiation to treat her cancer, and decided to make a change.

"I was very weak, my posture wasn't very good. I was extremely tired. I knew I had to do something to change it, otherwise it would keep getting worse and worse," she said.

Her coach, Jill Cox, said, "We had to help Heather walk down the stairs to get into the gym. She is inspirational. what she can do, anybody can do."

Heather's life has changed drastically since she regularly started going to the gym, and despite being 80 years old, she has never felt better.

"My son six months ago thought I was totally crazy, now they are all so very proud of me," she said.

"I just feel so fit. Mentally I feel clearer headed and happy all of the time."

Traveller's $3,000 mistake at airport security

A grandmother from New Zealand has copped a whopping $3,000 fine after failing to declare an airport sandwich to border control officers.

June Armstrong, 77, was travelling from her native Christchurch to Brisbane to housesit for a friend, and treated herself to a muffin and a sandwich ahead of her 4am flight.

Ms Armstrong ate her muffin before boarding the plane, and stashed the sandwich in her carry-on luggage to eat later on the flight.

However, the grandmother fell asleep on the plane and the sandwich was left uneaten.

When she woke up from her nap, she filled out the declaration form to enter Australia, as she had prescription medication, but completely forgot about the sandwich.

When she arrived at the security gates at Brisbane Airport and her bags were checked, she was met with an unfortunate welcome to Australia as she was slapped with the fine.

“I was just sobbing and said “$NZ3300 for a little sandwich?” Ms Armstrong told the NZ Herald.

She said asked the official who found the sandwich if they could throw it away for her, but after they walked away and came back, they allegedly just said, “Twelve points, $3300”.

Ms Armstrong first thought they were joking, but when she realised they were serious, she broke down in tears as staffers "strongly advised" her to appeal the fine within 28 days.

She went through with the appeal to avoid forking out the four-figure sum, but to no avail and eventually ended up coughing up the hefty fine.

“My husband kept saying, 'Just pay it'. I said, 'It’s our pension, we can’t afford this’,” Ms Armstrong said, adding that they had about $30,000 in savings as well as their pensions.

Ms Armstrong sent an email asking why she was fined, considering it was her first infringement, and why the cost was so high, especially considering the sandwich was untouched and sealed.

She also outlined the impact the fine was having on her mental health, but she allegedly never received a response.

Six months on from sandwich-gate, she has accepted she won’t be getting her money back and has since spoken out to warn fellow passengers not to make the same mistake.

“Everybody I show the fine to is dumbfounded, they just can’t believe it,” Ms Armstrong told the NZ Herald.

Australia’s Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry said Ms Armstrong needed an import permit to bring the chicken sandwich into the county, adding it could have been a much higher penalty, as fines can be as much as $6260.

“Meat has strict import conditions which can change quickly based on disease outbreaks,” a departmental spokesperson told news.com.au.

“Uncanned meats, including vacuum-sealed items, are not allowed into Australia unless accompanied by an import permit."

“Music somehow stays”: Great-grandma with dementia recalls lullaby in heartwarming moment with newborn great-grandson

When Connie Lynn uploaded a touching video of her mother singing to her Instagram account, she didn’t expect it to reach so many people or to warm so many hearts.

The clip features the moment 89-year-old Elinor Hanson got to hold her one-day-old great-grandson, Grayson. Elinor, who had been diagnosed with dementia years before but whose condition had worsened since 2020, delighted the whole family when she began to sing a beloved lullaby to the newborn.

"Okay, it goes like this,” she tells the swaddled baby, before asking, “now, are you listening?"

In the moments to follow, Elinor begins her heartfelt rendition, singing as she rocks him in her arms, “I love you, a bushel and a peck. A bushel and a peck and a hug around the neck. A hug around the neck and a barrel and a heap. A barrel and a heap and I'm talking in my sleep about you, about you, 'cause I love you.”

A teary-eyed Elinor trails off to look up at the camera, and with an emotional chuckle tells her family, “I’m going to cry.”

“Great grandma meeting and holding her newest great grandson and singing a song she sung to all the grandkids,” Connie Lynn captioned the post.

“A song my kids know very well. I love you a bushel and a peck,” she continued, “this night made her so happy. It’s amazing how the brain can lose so much but music somehow stays. Music really is amazing for healing and memory.”

Connie’s comments section was flooded with grateful messages from those who had watched the video, with many of them opening up about their own experiences with family members who had and have dementia, and the beautiful moments they shared over babies and music as well.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Connie Lynn Hanson (@fsvivace)

“I saw this on the Good News feed. I’m so glad this family will have this video to remember this sweet lady for years to come.”

Speaking to Today.com, Connie confessed that it was the moment right before her mum began singing that took her back to before she had dementia.

“It’s when she says, ‘okay, it goes like this, now you’re listening?,” she said, “that’s my mum that I remember.”

Connie opened up about her mother’s involvement in the lives of her children and grandchildren, calling her “the cookie-baking kind of grandma”, and a “musical lady” who liked to spend her time singing with choirs and at weddings.

With another great-grandchild on the way, Connie is positive that they’ll soon get another chance to hear Elinor’s sweet songs when the two meet.

Images: Instagram

"It's really special": Grandmother volunteers as surrogate for her son's child

The Hauck family is looking forward to welcoming another child into their family later this year, but under very unusual circumstances

Jeff and Cambria are parents to four children, who they had through IVF, and wanted one more baby to complete their family.

But after Cambria needed a hysterectomy after their last child was born, they had to contemplate using a surrogate.

“Cambria needed an emergency hysterectomy after having our boys,” her husband Jeff Hauck told NBC.

“We knew if we were going to be able to have any more of our embryos we would have to use a gestational carrier,” he said.

Enter: Jeff's mum Nancy.

The 56-year-old grandmother stepped up and offered to carry the couple's last embryo, as she became pregnant with her own granddaughter after several appointments with a fertility specialist and a complicated embryo transfer.

“Bringing another strong baby girl to our family, it’s just really special,” she said.

Despite not being pregnant in 26 years, Nancy said the pregnancy is going well and her body is handling the symptoms with ease.

“I am feeling great, surprisingly, and just like I did when I was younger and expecting,” she said.

The couple said the experience of getting their daughter here has been an incredible journey, and are eternally grateful to Nancy for her selflessness in carrying their child.

“It’s been so incredible to be part of this experience with her. I am eternally grateful,” Cambria said.

Just a couple of days after the embryo transfer, Nancy said she woke up in the middle of the night and heard a sweet voice clearly say, “Hi, my name is Hannah.”

Because of that experience, the couple has decided to name their daughter Hannah.

“Hannah means favour or grace which sums up the whole experience perfectly in every definition of the words! Nancy is doing this eternal ‘favour’ for our family. The way it all came to be has been through the grace of God,” Cambria said.

Young woman stuns in 91-year-old grandma's honeymoon clothes

A woman on TikTok has gone viral for giving her grandmother's clothes new life, 70 years after they were stashed away.

Maddy Bill, 27, found a suitcase that was full of her grandmother's clothes that she wore on her honeymoon in 1952, and hadn't seen the light of day since.

In a now-viral video on the social media platform, Maddy tried on all of the clothes and showcased the striking likeness to her grandmother, 70 years on.

"My grandmother kept all her honeymoon clothes in this suitcase to this day. Opening it up 70 years later," she wrote in the clip, which has been viewed more than six million times.

Maddy showed herself in the clothes, alongside pictures of her grandmother, who is now 91, wearing them on her honeymoon to New York City.

The suitcase full of clothes had been handed down to Maddy's mother, as the pair decided to reminisce together and find out what was inside.

"When my mom and I opened it up, it was like all the photographs I saw of my grandma growing up came to life," Maddy gushed.

'It was remarkable because I felt like we were bringing the past to life. Everything is honestly in pretty amazing condition."

The first thing she tried on was a black, button-down dress, which her grandma Marie had worn out to dinner during the honeymoon.

"I can't even describe the feeling of putting it on for the first time and having it fit perfectly."

When Marie saw her granddaughter in it, she was flooded with nostalgia and memories from her trip, making it feel like she was back on her honeymoon.

"I wish I was young again and could do it all over,' gushed Marie. "Seeing the dress fit her as perfectly as it fit me was like jumping back in time."

Grandma blasted by daughter for unthinkable act

A mother has been left fuming after her own mum left her toddler outside unattended while she went inside to grab a coffee.

The exhausted mother noted that she was already looking after her newborn child and was grateful that her mum was helping out with the kids.

However, the pair got into an argument when her mum left the 20-month-old toddler outside with no supervision.

The woman took to Mumsnet.com to ask whether or not she was overreacting.

“My mother and me just had a massive fight,” she began the post.

“My mother has been taking my toddler son out for a walk and came back to ‘charge her phone and drink a coffee’.

“She wanted to leave again afterwards, taking him for another walk, so she left him outside in the pushchair sleeping.

“I then said: ‘Can you please not leave him unattended outside the house?’”

The mother explained that she was just in her underpants, sick to the stomach, and was trying to settle her crying baby so was unable to walk outside to look after her son.

“My mother then called me ‘paranoid’ and said I watched too many crime shows.

“This resulted in us having a massive fight and I told my mother if she takes my toddler out, she has responsibility for him.

“In the end, she sat by the open door on a chair and had her coffee there.”

She then asked whether or not she was being paranoid and despite living in Birmingham where other families live, she was worried that an “opportunist was going to snatch him”.

Commenters sided with the mother, saying she was not being paranoid and it's her maternal instinct kicking in to ensure her children are safe.

“I don't think you're being OTT she shouldn't be leaving him outside where she can't see him,” one person wrote.

“This is a generational thing- in 1970 people happily left their babies in prams outside shops etc, just as these days you might leave a dog outside,” another explained.

“Times change, however, and these days it’s not generally seen as safe. Whether that’s because it’s genuinely more dangerous now or because we have a different attitude to risk, who knows? But it’s 2022 and not 1970.”

“No, no, no! The chance of him being snatched are small but there is still a chance and it's not a risk worth taking because you can't be arsed to take the pram into the house,” another commented.

Image: Shutterstock

Great-grandmother's hack for stopping toddler tantrums

A woman has shared invaluable advice she once received from her great-grandmother on how to diffuse toddler tantrums in just minutes.

"My great grandmother was a very strong willed Mexican woman and ever single time she heard this baby cry or toddler have a tantrum she would say the same thing," the woman explained in a Tik Tok video.

"Mija! Put the baby in the bath or bring it outside," she would always yell to parents who were dealing with a difficult child.

The woman, Lydia, is the mother of a teething baby and a very cheeky two-year-old toddler, and says her two boys have been "miserable" lately.

During a particularly tough day, Lydia remembered her great-grandmother's advice and decided to put it to the test - and discovered it really did work.

The struggling mother couldn't believe that the trick managed to work like a charm, so she consulted her paediatrician on her next visit.

The doctor backed the great-grandmother's tactic, saying there's a scientific reason why it works.

"It turns out that two major factors increases serotonin levels in babies, toddlers and anybody else - an increase in core body temperature and an increase in oxygen in your blood stream," she explained.

Lydia concluded the video by sharing the fail-proof saying with fellow parents, "If you're having a bad day and your kids are a wreck, put the baby in the tub or put the baby outside!"

Online followers thanked Lydia for her advice, with many saying they never thought of the trick before.

"Those abuelitas sure knew their stuff!! Grateful for them and their wisdom!" one person commented. Another said, "Such great advice! Love it!"

One mum also took to the post hinting that it's not just something that works on kids, "Works on mum's too! I always feel better after a bath or a sit on the porch."

"I'm terrified": William Tyrrell's grandmother speaks out

Image: A Current Affair

William Tyrrell’s biological grandmother has spoken with A Current Affair about the ongoing pain and heartache she has suffered – while sharing her insights into the seven-year-long case.

“He’s not alive. I knew he wasn’t alive for the last seven years. So, I’m just scared,” the woman, who cannot be identified, told ACA's Steve Marshall.

The grandmother shared she feels the loss for both for her grandson William and her own son, whose drug and alcohol issues have raged since the little boy's disappearance seven years ago.

"My son's been locked behind bars and treated like shear s—t …That's all I can say. I'm just being honest. You know, from day one. When this all started, I told thousands of people what I thought happened. My police statement, I've been honest," the woman said.

"That's where my heart's been."

The grandmother has also revealed details of the supervised visits that her son and his partner had with William, while he was in the care of his foster parents.

"So, we were like just having a little picnic - out jumps the foster care mother … about like giving the kids lollipops and Kinder Surprises," she said.

"So she's just like watching what's going on. Like and my son used to always say he was too scared to love his kids … he was too scared to love them for an hour ... supervised visits."

While there are theories circulating within the current investigation over what might have happened to William, his grandmother said she doesn't believe the theory that he might have fallen from the balcony and his body disposed of.

"I don't think anyone really knows what happened that morning," the grandmother said.

Until recently, the woman said she thought the police investigation, led by former detective Gary Jubelin, was a mess.

"Well, they didn't they didn't like, let me know or let anybody know," the woman said.

"…We knew nothing. Like … the first time I met Gary Jubelin was in the inquest. He walked past me, and I said to him, 'that's right, keep walking'," she said.

Emails from William's case worker in 2014 reveal the foster parents were making enquiries to adopt William and discussions were even had on the morning the little boy vanished.

William's grandmother also reacted to William Tyrrell's foster parents being charged over the assault of a child who is not William Tyrrell.

"I was like beside myself, I couldn't believe it. And like I always had, I once had that feeling that that was going on something was going on. So, I was pretty upset," the grandmother said in reaction to the unrelated charges.

After seven years of wondering, and four days into a renewed search, the heartache remains for William's biological grandma.

"Like I'm really scared when I hear something and my phone rings … I'm scared … If they're going to find him or bones or whatever. I'm terrified," she said.

UK drug trafficking grandmother dies in prison

A 72-year-old British woman who had been sentenced to eight years in a Portuguese prison for smuggling drugs has died behind bars.

Susan Clarke was arrested alongside husband Roger, 73, as their cruise ship sailed into Lisbon in December 2018. Police were acting on a tip-off, and found 9kg of cocaine in the linings of four of the couple’s suitcases on board the luxury Marco Polo cruise liner.

The couple claimed they thought they were smuggling exotic fruit after Roger picked up the suitcases while the ship was docked in St Lucia. However, they had previously been caught smuggling 240kg of cannabis into Norway in 2004, but skipped bail and changed their names from Button to Clarke.

Eventually, they were extradited and served time in a Norwegian prison. It is believed the couple had carried out multiple smuggling trips before a sniffer dog detected drugs in their old Nissan in Oslo.

The couple are from the southeastern English town of Chatham, in Kent, and tried to reinvent themselves as British expats living in Spain. But it is believed they worked for a drug gang, regularly smuggling cocaine into Europe on up to six cruises a year.

Susan found a lump in her breast last year and was subsequently diagnosed with cancer, but was due to be transferred to a British prison to serve out the rest of her sentence. A source told The Mirror that doctors had decided there was nothing they could do for her, so they ceased all treatments.

A month ago, she had one last visit with Roger, seeing him through a Perspex window. The source told The Mirror, “She was in so much pain. Roger seems to think they had won a battle to come back to the UK too, so he’s devastated that she wasn’t well enough to make the move.”

She died on Sunday, after spending two years sharing a 3m x 3m rat-infested cell with three other women at the maximum security Portuguese prison, EP Tires in Sao Domingo de Rana, west of Lisbon.

Image: Facebook

How a great-grandmother is creating a new generation of warrior women

Meenakshi Amma has become a driving force in the world of traditional Indian martial arts, as she has fought to revive the art of Kalarippayattu.

Kalarippayattu, also known as Kalari, is the oldest form of martial arts in India, and Amma has been working to encourage women and girls of all ages to take up the ancient practice.

“I started Kalari when I was seven. I am still practising, learning and teaching,” said the matriarch of the Kadathanad Kalari Sangham school, founded by her late husband in 1949.

“When you open the newspapers, you only see news of violence against women.”

“When women learn this martial art, they feel physically and mentally strong and it makes them confident to work and travel alone.”

Kalari can involve the use of weapons such as staffs, swords and shields, and contains elements of yoga and dance.

Reputedly 3,000 years old and often mentioned in ancient Hindu scriptures, the art remains infused with religion in the present day.

British colonial rulers in India banned the sacred practice in 1804, but it survived underground before a revival in the early 20th century and after independence in 1947.

Kalari is now recognised as a sport and is practiced by many all over India.

Inside Meenakshi’s Kalari hall, her son Sanjeev Kumar puts barefoot pupils, boys and girls alike, through their paces on the ochre-red earth floor as he takes up his mother’s legacy.

“It’s a form of poetry,” said civil engineer Alaka S Kumar, 29, daughter of Sanjeev. “I am going to teach Kalari, with my brother.
