No more Mr Nice Guy: Tom Hanks blows up at movie critics

Tom Hanks has taken aim at movie critics in a heated on Conan O'Brien's podcast, calling out the entire review section of the entertainment industry.

The Hollywood actor launched into his tirade on the Conan O'Brien Needs a Friend podcast as he looked at how movie reviews and the general audience reception to films has changed over the years.

“Now what happened is that time has become one of the metrics for how these things matter, right?” he said.

“In the day it was just a fist fight. It was every movie you came out, are you going to make the playoffs or not? Guess what? No, kid, you’re 2 and 12 and you ain’t going nowhere. Or, you got a shot.”

“It used to be you had these Rubicons that you crossed,” he continued. “First of all, do you love it or not? That’s the first thing. Yes, okay, you have crossed the Rubicon, right? The next Rubicon you cross is when the movie is completely done a year and a half later, and you see it for the first time, and you might like it. It doesn’t matter if it works or not, you look at it and say, ‘Hey, I think we acquitted ourselves pretty good.’ That’s Rubicon No. 2.”

Hanks went on, “Then the critics weigh in, that’s Rubicon No. 3, and that’s always up down. ‘We hate it, we like it. This is the worst thing … Oh hey, oh hi Tom, I saw you in a movie. It was cute.’”

“That’s when you ask the wife, ‘Hey, honey, could you take the revolver out of the glove box and hide it somewhere, because I think…,” Hanks joked.

Podcast host O'Brien then brought up that Hanks was initially “disappointed” with his 1996 film That Thing You Do!, which marked his directorial debut, but the movie has since become a cult classic in pop culture.

“Let me tell you something about these c***suckers who write about movies,” Hanks responded, before asking O’Brien and his co-hosts, “Can I say that?”

“Somebody who wrote about it is, ‘Tom Hanks has to stop hanging around with veterans of TV, because this is just like the shot on TV and it’s not much of anything,’” Hanks recalled. “That same person then wrote about the cult classic That Thing You Do! Same exact person. They said, ‘All you need is 20 years between now and then, and it ends up speaking some words.’”

“This is the guy”: Shocking new footage of Trump shooting released

New footage has emerged from the attempted assassination of Donald Trump, as investigations continue into the shooting.

Graphic new bodycam footage has shown local authorities speaking to a Secret Service agent after the shooter, 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, was gunned down at a Trump rally.

The footage shows the moment authorities climbed onto the roof where Crooks was positioned, and captures the moment police identify the shooter as a suspicious person.

One man, who appears to be a Secret Service agent, tells a Beaver County Emergency Services Unit (ESU) officer that Crooks’ body appeared to be the person who was previously reported to them for suspicious activity.

“So this is the guy,” the agent says, as the Beaver County ESU officer replies, “This is him.”

The ESU officer also says a police sniper took photos of Crooks, including of him on a bicycle, according to the footage.

“That’s the sniper that sent the original picture and seen him come from the bike and set the book bag down and then lost sight of him,” the officer tells the apparent Secret Service agent.

Crooks’ gunfire grazed Mr Trump’s ear and hit three rally-goers, killing 50-year-old volunteer firefighter and married father-of-two Corey Comperatore, before the gunman was quickly shot and killed by a Secret Service agent.

Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley a Republican, called on the Secret Service to release more information to the public about the attempted assassination as the federal law enforcement agency faces fierce criticism over security failures at the rally.

“Federal agencies, particularly the Secret Service, have failed to be transparent with the American people,” Mr Grassley said in a statement.

“This assassination attempt is a matter of substantial public interest, and the public’s business ought to be public.”

Image credits: Beaver County ESU / Bethel Park School District

"You guys can't touch me": Djokovic slams Wimbledon crowd

Novak Djokovic has launched into a staggering tirade after emerging from the Wimbledon courts victorious, after claiming the crowd was being "disrespectful" by booing him.

The Serbian tennis champ accused the audience after his 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 victory over Danish player Holger Rune, calling out the behaviour during his winning speech.

“To all the fans that have had respect and stayed here tonight, I thank you from the bottom of my heart and I appreciate it,” he said.

“And to all those people that have chosen to disrespect the player, in this case me, have a goooood night."

“Goooood night, goooood night, have a good night,” he continued.

The on-court interviewer suggested that the crowd was chanting “Rooooon” and was not in fact booing, but Djokovic was determined.

“I’m hoping they were just commenting on Rune and they weren’t disrespecting you,” the courtside interviewer said, as Djokovic responded, “They were, they were, they were, they were.”

“I am not accepting it. No, no, no. I know they were cheering for Rune but that’s an excuse to also boo."

“Listen, I have been on the tour for more than 20 years."

“I know all the tricks. I focus on the respectful people that pay for the ticket, and love tennis and appreciate the players."

“I have played in much more hostile environments, trust me ... you guys can’t touch me.”

He then headed for the Centre Court exit to initial applause before further chants of "Ruuuuuuune" followed.

Zoo's upright bear accused of being just a guy in a suit

A Chinese zoo has had to be completely trans-bear-ant about its popular sun bear, following allegations that it was actually a human in disguise.

The Hangzhou Zoo in China gained international recognition after video footage of their sun bear standing on its hind legs and waving at visitors caused many to paws and look twice.

Many were bear-side themselves with excitement as theories that it was a human in disguise continued to spread.

The local Hangzhou Daily first reported on the attention that the four-year-old sun bear named Angela was receiving.

“Because of the way they stand, some people online question whether they are ‘humans in disguise’,” they wrote.

As Angela gained popularity, experts were summoned and had to confirm that the bear was in fact fur-real.

Ashleigh Marshall, an expert from Chester Zoo, told BBC News that the animal “is definitely a real bear,” and affirmed to doubtful visitors that sun bears do often “look a lot like people in costumes”.

The animal expert also pointed out that the folds on the sun bear’s back weren’t because the costume was loose, but its actual function is to protect the bear from predators and allow them to “turn around” and fight back if attacked.

Various representatives of the zoo have had to come out and release statements addressing the controversy.

A spokesperson has reportedly said that the state-run facility would never intentionally deceive people, in an audio clip circulating on popular Chinese social media platform WeChat.

“Some people think I stand like a person,” read another social media post, written from the point of view of the bear.

“It seems you don't understand me very well.”

Another spokesperson for the zoo has also denied the allegations and said that a human in a fur bear suit “would not last more than a few minutes before collapsing” in the 40°C summer temperatures.

Images: Twitter / WeChat

"Guy is clueless": Kyrgios hits back at Pat Rafter

Nick Kyrgios has hit back at Aussie tennis legend Pat rafter after he dubbed Kyrgios' doubles team with Thanasi Kokkinakis a "circus".

Kyrgios and Kokkinakis, a duo that has been dubbed the "Special Ks", took the Australian Open by storm in 2022 when they teamed up and claimed the doubles crown.

The doubles act brought their signature flair to the court, bringing audiences to their feet in a memorable display of sporting showmanship.

But Rafter said the way the pair conduct themselves during the match has ruffled feathers among those on tour and left them on the outside within the locker room.

Rafter appeared on the Australian Open: The Happy Slam podcast and labelled the doubles act as a “circus”.

“It’s an interesting one that is, because the players are really upset about it,” Rafter said.

“I don’t know how that operates with them and doesn’t really bother me either way. It’s a bit of a circus … doubles is a great event, it’s a lot of fun, and it helps you with singles, but it’s not where it’s at. But at the same time, it’s entertainment.”

“If they create drama, create ticket sales, and they create people watching, then good on them, but at what expense, I don’t know. The players are really upset. Are you supposed to understand the underwritten rule that that’s not how you behave when you do?” Rafter said.

Kyrgios hit back at Rafter on social media, slamming the Aussie sports legend for fabricating the outrage of players.

“He would have absolutely zero idea on what the locker room thinks. Me and kokk have great relationships with most of the players on tour. Guy is clueless,” Kyrgios wrote on Twitter.

We’re reinventing who he is and that takes time. He was found not guilty of 13 charges.

Crown prosecutor David Morters SC on Friday told the court he was applying for Day to go straight to prison on the basis he was found guilty of so many charges, the quantity of money they involve and the period of which they were committed.

“The offender has been found guilty of 34 of 47 counts, the total value is about $648,000...each offence can carry a maximum penalty of prison,” Mr Morters told the court.

“The accused was in a position of trust over four years.”

Day’s defence barrister Dominic Toomey told Judge Timothy Gartelmann SC he would have to be “positively satisfied” Day would definitely go to prison after undergoing a sentence hearing.

Judge Gartelmann told the court while Day is “likely” to be sentenced to full-time imprisonment, he is not “positively satisfied” of the certainty due to the limited evidence before the court.

“The application must be refused. However, it must be understood that the determination I have made today does not mean the accused will not be sentenced to full time imprisonment nor does it mean it is unlikely.

“The determination whether a sentence of imprisonment is appropriate will be made following a sentence proceedings in due course.”

Day must surrender his passport to the court and report to police at Waverley Police Station once a week.

Images: Nine News

Guy Sebastian questioned over home intruder head-butt

Guy Sebastian has been grilled in court over claims he head-butted an intruder who broke into his Sydney home while his wife and newborn son were sleeping.

The singer recalled the incident while being cross-examined at the embezzlement trial of his former manager Titus Day.

“I had a newborn who was sleeping, I was at my recording studio … I received a call from my wife about this person who was trying to get into our house through my little boy’s window and as a result I arrived home,” Mr Sebastian told the court on Tuesday.

“By the time I got home the guy trying to break in was still there. I chased after him.”

However, the court heard different stories about what the singer told people happened next.

When asked repeatedly if he head-butted the intruder, Mr Sebastian said he had not.

But he agreed with Dominic Toomey SC, who is acting for Mr Day, that’s what he told people afterwards.

“While I was holding him he was trying to grab me … elbowing and kicking me … he grabbed my [motorbike] helmet,” Mr Sebastian said.

“I’ve told people that I knocked him out … I didn’t head-butt him … I agree I’ve told people that I head-butted him."

“You’re implying I head-butted him as an intentional act but it just didn’t happen like that.”

The incident was brought up in relation to its inclusion in an Apprehended Violence Order taken out by Titus Day.

Mr Sebastian was served with the AVO application two days before he reported Mr Day to police over the allegations of embezzlement.

Mr Sebastian said his former manager was trying to “weaponise” the incident by including it in his AVO.

New medical emergency hits Guy Sebastian trial

Guy Sebastian’s trial against his former manager faces more delays after another medical emergency unfolded just days after the presiding judge suddenly passed away.

One of the jurors was rushed to hospital after suffering a severe allergic reaction during the lunch break - prompting the new judge to question whether it is practical for the trial to continue, as reported by 7News.

Judge Timothy Gartelmann announced that he would be taking over the trial on Monday, and with several jurors handing him notes raising concerns about future commitments, he said he would deliberate overnight once he found out about the welfare of the ill juror.

“I will then make a decision about whether or not it is practical for individual jurors and indeed the trial itself to continue,” he said.

Sebastian’s former manager, Titus Emmanuel Day, has pleaded not guilty to 50 charges, including allegedly embezzling money owed to Sebastian through royalties and performance fees, as well as 50 alternative counts of larceny.

Beginning his testimony on Wednesday, May 4, the Voice judge testified that Day promised him 10 percent equity in his company 6 Degrees - which Day managed him through for nearly a decade - in recognition of his importance as a “foundation client” in the company’s success.

Email exchanges tendered in court also showed that Day told Sebastian he would give him 10 percent ownership of Solar D, a sunscreen brand Day created.

Sebastian said he then became an informal ambassador for the brand, conducting interviews and participating in a rowing event and photoshoot among other duties.

He said he didn’t expect any payment for the work because the emails made it clear he was part-owner of the company.

Sebastian said “there were requests for intros”, and when asked about Day’s character in relation to the company, he gave “him a wrap”.

“He’s a good bloke, and I’m involved as well. There’s nothing to worry about,” he recalled saying.

The trial is expected to continue under Judge Gartelmann on Tuesday.

The funeral for Judge Peter Zahra, who presided over the trial until his sudden passing and was a highly respected and senior judge in the NSW District Court, will be held on Friday.

In a statement, Judge Zahra’s family said he would be remembered as a “special soul”.

“We have received many lovely messages and memories that demonstrate the type of person he was, he had a big heart and wanted to see everyone achieve more than what they ever thought possible,” the statement said.

“In honour of our Dad and his life, we encourage everyone to have a hot chocolate and share a dad joke in his honour!”

Image: Guy Sebastian (Facebook)

Guy Sebastian responds after lashing out at teens in new clip

Guy Sebastian has admitted he regrets language he used in a clip of him swearing at a group of teenagers over the Easter holiday break, adding the clip didn’t show the full extent of the situation.

The footage, obtained by The Daily Telegraph, shows the Voice coach storming up to the group of teens and calling one a “f***wit” after they allegedly said something offensive to him.

Looking clearly frustrated, the clip shows Sebastian approach the group saying, “I was f***ing being nice to you”, as one teen tells him to calm down.

“He’s a kid, calm down,” one teen repeats.

“I was a kid once, I wasn’t a f***wit,” Sebastian replies.

In his response to the clip, the 40-year-old singer said he regretted using strong language, but that the clip didn’t show everything.

“We all know teenagers can push boundaries,” he told Sunday Confidential.

“This isn’t an isolated situation.

“Being provoked for a reaction and being filmed sometimes comes with being in the public eye.

“I shouldn’t have sworn, I am not proud of that, but … it’s a very short snippet of a situation that does not tell the full story.”

The emergence of the footage comes at the end of a tough week for the Aussie artist, who gave evidence against his former manager in court and was forced to postpone his tour dates after testing positive to Covid.

Image: @guysebastian (Instagram)

“I’m so sorry”: Guy Sebastian apologises for pro-vax video

Guy Sebastian has issued an emotional apology after posting a now-deleted social media message urging Australians to get vaccinated which was part a music industry advertisement called #VaxTheNation’.

In an Instagram video shared late Monday night, The Voice judge claimed the original post from #VaxTheNation had been published without his “direct involvement” and he told his followers he was “really sorry.”

“I would never, ever tell people what to do when it comes to their personal health choices,” he said.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by guysebastian (@guysebastian)

#VaxTheNation is an advertising campaign

#VaxTheNation is an advertising campaign for the music industry, urging Australians to get vaccinated so live shows can resume.

Music industry heavyweights including Jimmy Barnes, Amy Shark, and the Hilltop Hoods, along with major record labels, ticketing agencies and festival organisers, have backed the #VaxTheNation
initiative, which was released on Monday.

The campaign calls for Australians to help “stop the interruptions” to the entertainment industry and help end the cycle of lockdowns.

Sebastian is promoted among the high-profile names behind the cause.

But it seems Sebastian has had second thoughts and he aired these on his Instagram video, saying:

“I’m sure some of you today would have seen an industry call-out with the best of intentions for our live music industry – which has been absolutely decimated – trying to find a pathway forward so that we can all assemble together again.”

“While I, like everybody else in my industry, want things to get going again, it is not my role to communicate in a way that that post was communicated,” he said.

“I would never, ever tell people what to do when it comes to their personal health choices. I’m very sensitive of it – not only on a public level, but even in my personal life, with people who have circumstances that they have to consider when making these choices.”

Sebastian ended with a direct apology: “I just want to say I’m really sorry, it was not a post that communicated with the love or compassion which I feel is needed when it comes to addressing things like vaccinations.

“I just wanted to clarify that so I could speak my truth and people would know how I actually feel.”

Apology seems to have backfired

It seems the apology video seems to have backfired, with many fans and fellow musos left confused by his message.

Ben Lee tweeted: ‘To be honest, this is actually a really sad example of what happens when your career is dependent on trying to be all things to all people.’

Another tweeted: ‘Man, any musicians apologising for trying to get back to work by advocating for a safer audience is self defeating. Unpack your spine ya goofballs.’

And Joel Creasey tweeted: ‘But seriously, Guy trying to sit on the fence in a pandemic is a fun new move.’

Last year, Sebastian copped a similar backlash from the industry after posing with Prime Minister Scott Morrison in an unpaid role to help promote the federal government’s $250 million emergency relief package.

But the botched funding was widely criticised by the entertainment industry, who were disappointed by the slow rollout - and Sebastian later told the Herald Sun he felt he’d been used as a “prop” by the Federal Government.

“I copped it, because I was trying to support something I believed would make a difference. And it hasn’t, so that’s on me,” Sebastian said.

“I made that decision, I’ll cop it, that’s fair enough. But it doesn’t mean I agree with how it’s been rolled out, I think it’s dismal.”

Sebastian’s personal decision

In a statement to news.com.au, Sebastian made his position on vaccination clear: “There is no confusion, I made the personal decision to be double vaccinated. I support the music industry initiatives to revive our industry, however, I personally don’t believe it is my place to deal in absolutes to tell people what to do in regards to their personal health choices. We need to remember to communicate with empathy and understanding. This has always been my goal.”

Image: Instagram

We studied what happens when guys add their cats to their dating app profiles

These photos don’t just relay attractiveness; a recent study suggested that 43% of people think they can get a sense of someone’s personality by their picture. You might guess that someone who has included a photo of themselves hiking is an outdoorsy type of person.

But as scientists who study human-animal interactions, we wanted to know what this meant for pet owners – in particular, male cat owners.

If you’re a guy who owns a cat, what kind of effect does it have on suitors if you post a picture posing with your favourite feline?

Prior studies suggested that women do judge a potential male partner based on whether he has pets. While they favour men with dogs, the results showed that they also give men with cats an edge over non-pet owners.

Because of this, we reasoned that men pictured with cats would probably be viewed as more attractive and desirable than men who didn’t pose with any animals.

In our study, we recruited 1,388 heterosexual American women from 18 to 24 years old to take a short anonymous online survey. In the survey, we presented them with photos of one of two young white men in their early 20s either posing alone or with a cat. To avoid biasing the women’s responses, we randomly presented which photo they saw first. Each participant only rated one man, with and without a cat.

Each time the participants saw a photo, we asked them to rate the man pictured on several personality attributes, including his masculinity, femininity and date-ability. We also asked the women if they defined themselves as a “cat person,” “dog person,” “neither” or “both.”

Most of the women found the men holding cats to be less dateable. This result surprised us, since previous studies had shown that women found men with pets to have higher potential as partners. They also thought the men holding cats were less extroverted and more neurotic, agreeable and open. Importantly, they saw these men as less masculine, too.

This last point may explain our findings.

Prior research suggests that women often seek masculine men – both in terms of physical appearance and behaviors. So the fact that women in our study found the photo of the man alone more masculine and more dateable supports the idea that women are likely to look first for clues related to masculinity when determining date-ability.

We suspect old cultural norms may be playing a role in the responses. Past research suggests that male femininity and homosexuality are still perceived to be connected. Since cats are sometimes associated more closely with female owners – and therefore, considered a feminine pet – posing with cats may have primed the women taking our survey to default to this outdated trope, despite some popular media efforts to elevate the status of male cat owners.

Alternatively, the perception of male cat owners as less extroverted and more neurotic, agreeable and open may have nudged our respondents to put these men in the “friend zone.” In other words, perhaps seeing a man pose with the cat suggests he might be a better confidant than date.

It’s important to note that whether the women identified themselves as “cat people,” “dog people,” “both” or “neither” affected their perceptions. Women who self-identified as “cat people” were more inclined to view the men pictured with cats as more dateable or say they had no preference.

Of course, like any research, our work has its limitations. Our sample is a very specific population – heterosexual, primarily white women, aged 18 to 24 years and living in the United States. We don’t know how these results would change if we surveyed, say, bisexual or gender-fluid women, men interested in men or individuals from different cultural backgrounds.

And that’s the best part. This is a new, growing area of research, and it’s only one of a handful of potential studies on the relationship between pet ownership and first impressions on dating apps. This means we have our work cut out for us.

But in the meantime, if heterosexual men are looking to get a match, it’s probably a good idea if they save showing off their photos with their favourite felines for the first or second date.

Written by Misha Ketchell. Bride-to-be blasted for slamming sentimental ring: "Hope that guy takes it back and runs"

A woman has been labelled “trashy” after she made fun of an engagement ring given to her by her partner.

The unnamed bride-to-be posted her complaints on Facebook, which was later shared on Reddit.

“My boyfriend finally asked me to marry him and this is really what he gives me,” she wrote, including two pictures of her wearing the ring.

“He pulled it out of his pocket and it took just about everything in me to not laugh and question whether this was real life or not.”

The woman's post as shared on Reddit

She said while she was getting used to the jewellery after a few days, she still wished for something different. “It was his grandmother’s and the pearl is my birthstone and I think that’s the only reason I’ve been able to tolerate it.”

However, the backlash to her post was immediate.

“Hope that guy takes the ring back and runs,” a user commented.

Many people agreed that the pearl piece may not be suitable as an engagement ring.

“As someone who worked in the jewelry industry for years, if you're going to go with an alternative stone instead of diamond, the pearl is the LAST stone you want in an everyday engagement ring,” one commenter wrote.

“They are porous and are easily damaged. Pearls are meant to be worn occasionally, and then kept in a bag away from moisture.”

Others were also not a fan of the piece, with many describing it as “hideous”, “ugly” and “upsetting”.

However, most agreed that the ring was not the main issue with the woman’s gripe.

“That ring is pretty ugly in my opinion, it’s okay to be disappointed with something you’ll have to theoretically wear forever. Posting it all over social media however...” one posted.

“The trashiness comes from the Facebook post, not the ring itself. She can hate the ring and talk to him about it. Instead she broadcasted her feelings to the world at his expense.”

What do you think of the bride-to-be’s post? Share your thoughts in the comments.
