One Direction band members Louis Tomlinson and Zayn Malik have shared emotional tributes to Liam Payne, who died at the age of 31 after falling from a hotel balcony on Thursday.

Payne's death was confirmed by Argentinian media outlet La Nacion, who reported that Payne fell from around 13 or 14 metres while on holiday in Buenos Aires and suffered "very serious injuries incompatible with life", while Alberto Crescenti, head of the state emergency medical system, confirmed "there was no possibility of resuscitation.”

His sudden death has sent shockwaves through the music industry, with fellow artists and millions of fans expressing their sadness online.

Louis Tomlinson, one of the members of One Direction, shared a lengthy post paying tribute to his friend and bandmate, recalling some of the moments they shared.

"I am beyond devastated to be writing this but yesterday I lost a brother," he wrote alongside a photo of the pair on stage. "Liam was somebody I looked up to everyday, such a positive, funny, and kind soul. "

"I first met Liam when he was 16 and I was 18, I was instantly amazed by his voice but more importantly as time went on I got a chance to see the kind brother I’d longed all my life for."

"Liam was an incredible song writer with a great sense of melody, we often spoke of getting back in the studio together to try and recreate the writing chemistry we had built up in the band. And for the record, Liam was in my opinion the most vital part of One Direction. His experience from a young age, his perfect pitch, his stage presence, his gift for writing. The list goes on. Thank you for shaping us Liam."

Tomlinson then shared a "message to you Liam if you’re listening", writing, "I feel beyond lucky to have had you in my life but I’m really struggling with the idea of saying goodbye. I’m so grateful that we got even closer since the band, speaking on the phone for hours , reminiscing about all the thousands of amazing memories we had together is a luxury I thought I’d have with you for life. I would have loved to share the stage with you again but it wasn’t to be. "

He went on to share a message to Payne's seven-year-old son Bear, adding, "I want you to know that if Bear ever needs me I will be the Uncle he needs in his life and tell him stories of how amazing his dad was."

"I wish I got chance to say goodbye and tell you one more time how much I loved you. Payno, my boy, one of my best friends, my brother, I love you mate. Sleep well X."

Zayn Malik, another member of One Direction, also shared his own tribute, writing how he has found himself talking out loud to Payne “hoping you can hear me”.

“I can’t help but think selfishly that there were so many more conversations for us to have in our lives,” he continued.

“I never got to thank you for supporting me through some of the most difficult times in my life. When I was missing home as a 17 yr old kid you would always be there with a positive outlook and reassuring smile and let you know. that you were my friend and I was loved.”

“I lost a brother when you left us and can’t explain to you what I’d give just to give you a hug one last time and say goodbye to you properly and tell you that I loved and respected you dearly.”

“There is no words that justify or explain how I feel right now other than beyond devastated. I hope that wherever you are right now you are good and are at peace and you know how loved you are. Love you bro,” he concluded the post.

Harry Styles also shared a tribute after Liam's sudden death, writing, "I am truly devastated by Liam's passing."

"His greatest joy was making other people happy, and it was an honour to be alongside him as he did it," he continued.

"Liam lived wide open, with his heart on his sleeve, he had an energy for life that was infectious. He was warm, supportive, and incredibly loving. The years we spent together will forever remain among the most cherished years of my life. I will miss him always, my lovely friend."

He concluded his message, which was shared alongside the "🖤" emoji and a photo of Payne looking out onto the stage, with: "My heart breaks for Karen, Geoff, Nicola and Ruth, his son Bear, and all those around the world who knew and loved him, as I did."

The One Direction Instagram account also shared a statement from all four of the members, that said, “We’re completely devastated by the news of Liam’s passing. In time, and when everyone is able to, there will be more to say."

“But for now, we will take some time to grieve and process the loss of our brother, who we loved dearly.

“The memories we shared with him will be treasured forever. For now, our thoughts are with his family, his friends, and the fans who loved him alongside us. We will miss him terribly. We love you Liam.”

The statement was signed from Louis and Zayn, as well as Niall Horan and Harry Styles.

Gallagher brothers clash again: Siblings feud over new documentary

Liam Gallagher’s new documentary As It Was premiered, but it wasn’t without controversy.

Liam said that his ex-bandmate, brother and sworn worst enemy Noel Gallagher wouldn’t let him include Oasis music in the film.

The new documentary is set to follow the “emotional story” of Liam and how he went from being at the top of Oasis down to “lost in the musical wilderness of boredom, booze and bitter legal battles”.

Liam describes it as, “about my musical comeback – it covers the writing and recording of my first solo album [2017s As We Were, which hit #1 in the UK], right through to playing it live for the very first time in my hometown of Manchester and around the world,” according to Music Feeds.

Liam addressed fans at the premiere and said that Noel wouldn’t give him permission to use their Oasis songs in the documentary.

“I think he has seen it, him and his little people [have seen] it and took the Oasis music out of it because that’s all he’s got left for me. Liam Neeson’s son pays touching tribute to his late mother Natasha Richardson

Liam Neeson’s son Micheál has chosen a touchingly beautiful way to pay tribute to his late mother, Natasha Richardson, nine years after her death.

According to Page Six, Micheál has legally changed his surname from Neeson to Richardson to ensure his mother’s legacy lives on forever.

Known for her extensive acting career, Natasha passed away in 2009, aged 45, after a skiing accident was to blame for a traumatic brain injury.

The couple’s sons, Micheál and Daniel, were 13 and 12 when their mother died unexpectedly.

Fellow actress and Natasha’s mother, Vanessa Redgrave, told the Daily Mail that Micheál’s intention was not to offend his father but to pay tribute to his mother.

“That wasn’t because he wanted to avoid his father’s fame, which is enormous,” she said. “He wanted to hold his mother close to him – because she was a remarkable actress. Absolutely remarkable.”

Natasha Richardson with Micheál (left) and Daniel (right)

An earlier interview dating back to 2015 with Micheál by the Sunday Times revealed that the now 23-year-old tried to hide his emotions as he “pushed it out". The built-up grief then led to unfortunate decisions that he now regrets.

“Things just started going downhill. The people I was with, we were partying a lot. It was dark. I hit rock bottom,” he admitted.

“Everybody said, ‘This kid has lost his mum, that’s where the problem comes from.’ And I was like, ‘No it isn’t, I just like to party.’ But looking back, I realise it was a delayed reaction.”

Couple banned from naming their baby daughter “Liam”

A French couple have been banned from naming their baby girl, Liam, after a judge determined she could get confused about her gender.

The unnamed parents, from Brittany, wanted to give their third child, born in November, the traditionally-male name.

However, French prosecutors stepped in arguing the name “would be likely to create a risk of gender confusion” and “therefore contrary to the interest of the child and could harm him in his social relations”, reported the Sun.

The prosecutor cited examples of famous Liams to support the argument, including singer Liam Gallagher and actor Liam Neeson.

The date of the trial hearing is yet to be announced, but the parents have requested a lawyer and reportedly postponed the date of their daughter’s baptism.

The French Civil Code states children can be given any name unless it is against the interest of the child.

A court has also previously ruled against the name Fañch, because it included the character ñ (called a tilde) in their baby’s name.

“The principle according to which babies’ names are chosen by their mothers and fathers must have limits when it comes to using a spelling which includes a character unrecognised by the French language,” the court ruled, according to the Guardian.

In 2015 a court in Valenciennes banned a couple from naming their daughter “Nutella”.

The judge decided that it wouldn’t be in the child’s best interest to be named after a chocolate spread.

“The name ‘Nutella’ given to the child is the trade name of a spread,” the court’s decision read, according to a translation.

“And it is contrary to the child’s interest to be wearing a name like that can only lead to teasing or disparaging thoughts (sic).”

8 incredible actors who haven’t won an Oscar

The world was thrilled when Leonardo DiCaprio finally broke his Oscars drought and won the Best Actor gong at this year’s Academy Awards. However, it got us thinking – which other incredible actors have been overlooked by the Academy? We were shocked at what we found!

Glenn Close

We were surprised to discover 69-year-old Close never received an Oscar, especially given her illustrious career, which spans four decades. She has been nominated six times before, first in 1982 and most recently in 2011 for Albert Nobbs.

Johnny Depp

It’s hard to believe that one of the quirkiest actors around has never earned an Academy Award, despite receiving three nominations. In 2012 the 53-year-old held the Guinness World Record for the highest paid actor, but unfortunately money doesn’t equal acclaim!

Liam Neeson

One of our favourites, 64-year-old Liam Neeson received a Best Actor nomination for his performance in Spielberg’s Schindler’s List but lost out to Tom Hanks. The movie went on to win the Best Picture gong that year.

Bill Murray

Though he’s known for his comedic roles, Bill Murray, 65, has diversified quite a bit in recent years, starring in critically acclaimed dramas like Lost in Translation, for which he was nominated for Best Actor, but lost to Sean Penn.

Sigourney Weaver

The 66-year-old has been prolific in sci-fi icons like the Alien franchise, the first instalment of which earned her a Best Actress nomination. She was also nominated for Gorillas in the Mist and Working Girl, but was unable to beat Jodie Foster and Geena Davis respectively.

Albert Finney

80-year-old Finney’s acting career began almost 60 years ago and he has been nominated for Best Actor an impressive four times (including for Murder on the Orient Express) and once for Best Supporting Actor but sadly has never won.

Harrison Ford

He’s played some of the most iconic roles in cinema, from Indiana Jones to Han Solo, but Ford, 73, has yet to win an Oscar. He was nominated for Best Actor back in 1985 for his role in Witness, but was beaten by William Hurt for Kiss of the Spider Woman.

Ralph Fiennes

The incredibly versatile 53-year-old actor has starred in many well-received films, including Schindler’s List and The English Patient, for which he received a Best Supporting Actor and Best Actor nomination respectively.

Which actors do you think should have received an Oscar for their performance? Let us know in the comments below.

Related links:

8 classic films getting remakes

10 over-60s action stars who still have it

Harrison Ford set to return for fifth Indiana Jones movie

Meet the first female jockey to win the Melbourne Cup

Michelle Payne has become the first female jockey to win the Melbourne Cup.

Ms Payne, 30, ran a great race on Tuesday with Prince of Penzance, which is quite a feat when you consider the 101-1 odds some of the bookmakers were giving before the race started.

Michelle and her brother Stephen

Image credit: Twitter / Sylvia Jeffreys

The only woman racing in the premier event, Ms Payne described the win as “unbelievable, a dream come true”, but also took a moment to note the chauvinistic side of the male-dominated sport.

“It is such a chauvinistic sport, some of the owners wanted to kick me off the horse,” Ms Payne said. “But I gave it everything I got. I want to say to everyone else get stuffed, they think women aren't strong enough but we just beat the world.”

This is Ms Payne’s second run at “the race that stops a nation”, after her first ride in 2009. She’s only the fourth female jockey in history to compete in the prestigious race.

At the victory presentation Ms Payne said: “Racing is a very male dominated sport. But you know what? It’s not all about strength. It’s about getting a horse into a rhythm for you. It’s being patient.”

Hero image credit: Twitter / ABC Grandstand
