Stevie Nicks faces wild backlash over Hawaii fires post

Stevie Nicks, the celebrated icon from Fleetwood Mac, has drawn a mixed response among her admirers due to her extensive reflection on the Maui fires, with even her most devoted supporters not hesitating to express their concerns.

The legendary artist took to social media to convey her thoughts regarding the tragic Maui fires, a subject close to her heart. However, her detailed account of how the catastrophe impacted her, particularly in relation to her niece's disrupted holiday plans, has drawn a divisive reaction.

In a post entitled "“Lahaina is not gone ~ It is just away,” Nicks opened up about her personal connection to the coastal town that fell victim to the destructive fires, claiming the lives of at least 96 individuals.

“As I am sure you have heard – the island, Maui, where I own a house I have been staying at since the 80s – and the small village, city, most magical place on earth, Lahaina, burned to the ground over the last few days,” she wrote.

She further explained the distressing situation involving her young niece, her spouse, and their child, who had just embarked on a much-needed vacation before the niece's return to her studies in psychology. Regrettably, their vacation was cut short due to the onset of the fire.

Nicks also delved into the profound connection that the members of Fleetwood Mac share with Maui. “This island, in so many ways, defines Fleetwood Mac and me and our families. My truth was that I wanted a house here just so I could spend time in Lahaina walking the streets; visiting the art galleries – sitting on the rock wall – Most all the opals I wear on my fingers came from a store on Front Street. I hope the sweet lady who owned that store was able to grab all her opals and run. I hope she made it out.”

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Stevie Nicks (@stevienicks)

The response among her fan base has been polarised. Some voiced disappointment with Nicks for placing emphasis on her niece's disrupted vacation rather than the tragic loss of nearly 100 lives in the fires. They also questioned the absence of any links or information directing her substantial Instagram following, which numbers 1.4 million, towards aiding the fire survivors.

One Instagram user commented, “I’ve been a Stevie fan forever and a day but this is Completely tone deaf! There are people who have LOST THEIR HOMES, their livelihood and their loved ones. Regular people – not rich, and not tourists. “Ruining” someone’s well deserved holiday is the absolutely LEAST of it all. True colours are shining and it’s such a disappointment.”

While detractors were vocal, others stood up for Nicks, contending that her personal connection to the island warranted her sharing her story just as much as anyone else – with one post in particular offering a particularly insightful explanation:

"People commenting with criticism: I sincerely understand but what you don’t realize is that this is a woman who doesn’t go on the internet or understand how any of that works. She hand writes these notes to express her heart and has an assistant post them. She has always given back without advertising it. The concept of crowdfunding donations on social media is something she really just has no idea about. If she knew better, I could understand the frustration but she’s just not a part of social media discourse whatsoever. I can guarantee that she is not only giving back but reaching directly out to individuals she has crossed paths with there over the years. Stevie has always been charitable, but has never been a citizen of the internet."

Images: Instagram

"Guy is clueless": Kyrgios hits back at Pat Rafter

Nick Kyrgios has hit back at Aussie tennis legend Pat rafter after he dubbed Kyrgios' doubles team with Thanasi Kokkinakis a "circus".

Kyrgios and Kokkinakis, a duo that has been dubbed the "Special Ks", took the Australian Open by storm in 2022 when they teamed up and claimed the doubles crown.

The doubles act brought their signature flair to the court, bringing audiences to their feet in a memorable display of sporting showmanship.

But Rafter said the way the pair conduct themselves during the match has ruffled feathers among those on tour and left them on the outside within the locker room.

Rafter appeared on the Australian Open: The Happy Slam podcast and labelled the doubles act as a “circus”.

“It’s an interesting one that is, because the players are really upset about it,” Rafter said.

“I don’t know how that operates with them and doesn’t really bother me either way. It’s a bit of a circus … doubles is a great event, it’s a lot of fun, and it helps you with singles, but it’s not where it’s at. But at the same time, it’s entertainment.”

“If they create drama, create ticket sales, and they create people watching, then good on them, but at what expense, I don’t know. The players are really upset. Are you supposed to understand the underwritten rule that that’s not how you behave when you do?” Rafter said.

Kyrgios hit back at Rafter on social media, slamming the Aussie sports legend for fabricating the outrage of players.

“He would have absolutely zero idea on what the locker room thinks. Me and kokk have great relationships with most of the players on tour. Guy is clueless,” Kyrgios wrote on Twitter.

Nick Kyrgios blasts Ash Barty’s historic win

Nick Kyrgios has hit back at Ash Barty’s historic win of the Newcombe Medal for a record fifth time in a row.

The 26-year-old retired tennis player won the Newcombe Medal at the Australian Tennis Awards for her Australian Open success.

This, however, did not appear to sit right with fellow Aussie Kyrgios, who said she did not deserve the medal after having only played the Australian Open this year.

In an Instagram story, Kyrgios shared a photo with Barty and his achievements in the past year, clearly showing he achieved more.

He had the caption: "LOL. No respect at all. I don't give a f***."

The graphic showed that Barty had played only three months of 2022 in which she won two singles titles and one doubles crown, including 14 matches across the two formats.

Kyrgios on the other hand had one singles title and three doubles crowns, as well as 61 victories across the two disciplines.

Despite the huge difference in numbers, it would appear that Kyrgios played better than Barty but that is not the case.

Barty won a singles grand slam and Kyrgios simply did not after losing the Wimbledon singles decider to Novak Djokovic while Barty defeated Danielle Collins.

Images: Instagram

The truth about house swaps

Swapping your humble home on a quiet street for a house that’s a stone’s throw from Regent’s Park in London’s prestigious north. It’s a romantic notion isn’t? As house swaps become more popular, it appears not everyone is sold on the concept. For some, the idea of house swapping has raised questions about security and safety. Over60 sat down with Nick Faud, the founder of Aussie House Swap Australia, to find out the truth about house swapping.

What are the common misconceptions about house swaps?
Some homeowners worry about having someone in their home. The key to house swapping is that this is a mutual agreement between two parties as you are staying in each other’s homes. Swappers treat their each other’s home with care and respect, knowing that they’re in their home and this is what they would expect from them. Also some people worry about their insurance. In fact, you'll find most insurance companies prefer that there is going to be someone in the home rather than leaving it empty and vulnerable. Check with your insurance company and inform them that you have someone looking after your home while you are away.

What measures are in place to ensure the safety of the houses?
House swap holidays are a mutual agreement based on trust. Both members are in each other’s homes and so they treat them as well as they would their own. Having someone in your home while you are in theirs ensures a level of trust and respect from house swappers. Many swappers will have a lockable cupboard in their home where they can store any valuables away while the swap partner is staying in their home. This can also include personal items or photos that you do not feel comfortable leaving out for others to look at.

The more open communication you have before commencing the swap, the better your swap holiday will be. If there are any rooms you don’t want your swappers to go in, you can make this clear at the outset and they will respect this. Be open about any concerns at the beginning and address them so they will not come up during the swap and become an issue.

Do swappers ever maintain contact after a swap?
Many swap members will swap again with a swap partner if they like the house and area. They can almost become each other’s holiday homes! We have heard of many swappers who go on to find that they have a lot in common and become friends. Some even holiday together at times. The house swap community is a great group of people. To be open to the idea of letting someone stay in your home while you holiday in theirs, is an open and trusting attitude so many swappers make positive and lasting friendships in the swap community.

What are the rules around pets?
Some swappers think they cannot swap if they have pets. This is not the case. Many house swap members love to spend some time taking care of their swap partner’s animal. As long as it’s not a big commitment then most swappers are happy to swap house with someone who has a family pet. If you have a treasured canine friend who you travel with, then this is usually also fine as many swappers are happy for you to bring your own pet with you. You just need to check at the beginning that the swap partner is happy for this, and if so, whether the animal is allowed inside or has to stay outside. Some homes are not set up for animals so in this case you cannot bring your pet with you, however, there are many pet-friendly swappers out there.

How long on average do people swap houses for?
People swap their houses for all different lengths of time. Some will swap of a weekend, a week, a month, a few months or even a year! Swappers travelling closer to home may want to swap only for a short length of time, but those who are travelling further away may want to swap houses for a longer time.

Image: @aussiehouseswap (Instagram)

Fan accused of being drunk by Nick Kyrgios wants to sue him

A tennis fan who was accused by Nick Kyrgios of being drunk during a Wimbledon match wants to sue him for defamation.

Kyrgios was playing against Rafael Nadal at Wimbledon back in July when the Aussie star complained to the umpire about Anna Palus who was “costing him the game”.

He said Palus was "drunk out of her mind" and "looks like she's had 700 drinks" which she took offence to after being removed from the crowd.

Palus has since hired legal representation and is looking to sue Kyrgios for defamation following his comments.

“On Sunday July 10 2022 I attended the final of the Wimbledon tennis championships with my mother. It was an event we had been looking forward to for some time,” Palus’ statement read.

“During the course of the final, Nick Kyrgios made a reckless and entirely baseless allegation against me.

“Not only did this cause considerable harm on the day, resulting in my temporary removal from the arena, but Mr Kyrgios’s false allegation was broadcast to, and read by, millions around the world causing me and my family very substantial damage and distress.”

"She's drunk out of her mind and talking to me in the middle of a game. Given the extant claim, I am unable to comment further on the events of the day in question.

“I hope that Mr Kyrgios will reflect on the harm he has caused me and my family and offer a prompt resolution to this matter.”

“However, if he is unwilling to do this, I am committed to obtaining vindication in the High Court.

Images: Getty

“I have been suffering”: Rafael Nadal withdraws from Wimbledon

Rafael Nadal has officially withdrawn from Wimbledon ahead of his semi-final match against Nick Kyrgios due to an abdominal injury, prompting his Aussie competitor to sail straight into Sunday’s men’s final.

Nadal confirmed the news on Friday morning (AEST) after it was reported that he suffered a 7mm abdominal tear during his quarter-final win against Taylor Fritz.

“Unfortunately, as you can imagine, if I am here, I have to pull out from the tournament,” he said in a press conference.

“As everybody saw yesterday, I had been suffering with pain in the abdominal. “Keep doing you”: Kyrgios goes head to head with reporter

After cinching a five-set win against Brandon Nakashima, Aussie tennis star Nick Kyrgios shut down a reporter’s attempts to stir up controversy.

During his post-match press conference, one reporter targeted Kyrgios’ wardrobe choices - namely the red Jordans and matching cap he wore for his fourth round clash against Nakashima - but the athlete was having none of it.

Referring to Wimbledon’s dress code rules - where players are required to wear almost entirely white while on the court - the reporter questioned why Kyrgios made such bold outfit choices in light of previous comments he made about controversy seeming to “materialise around” him.

“Because I do what I want,” Kyrgios said.

“So you’re above the rules?” the reporter hit back.

“No. I’m not above the rules,” the 27-year-old answered.

“So what is it? They don’t apply to you?” the reporter asked.

“I just like my Jordans.”

“Keep doing you then champion”: the way Kyrgios fails to get riled up by this line of questioning is a delight to watch pic.twitter.com/M6u6T94Wu0

— Gavin Coote (@GavinCoote) July 4, 2022

Though Kyrgios wasn’t biting, the reporter kept trying to bait the athlete.

“I don’t want to ruin the surprise but the referee’s going to be speaking to you about (his uniform),” the reporter said.

“That’s OK. I’ll wear triple whites tomorrow,” Kyrgios said.

“But that’s fine then. No one else, in both draws, wear …” the reporter began, with Kyrgios interjecting: “But no one else - even after Wimbledon - no one else really walks with Jordans on the court.”

When the moderator tried to interject, the reporter apologised, saying that Kyrgios “just moaned about the controversy that surrounds him”.

“I haven’t moaned. I love it.” Kyrgios said.

“So you just laugh it off then?” the reporter asked.

“Yeah, it’s just more attention for me. What’s that saying? Any publicity is good publicity right?” Kyrgios answered.

“If you say so,” the reporter said, to which Kyrgios replied, “Keep doing you then champion”.

Kyrgios has been the subject of plenty of controversy and criticism, but has said he’s okay with it.

“I just smile,” he said. “It’s so funny. Hilarious. I almost just wake up and read things, I just laugh.

“And I never forget things. Whether it was three, four years ago, I have a massive chip on my shoulder. I sit here now in the quarter-finals of Wimbledon again, and I just know there’s so many people that are so upset.

“None of you know me at all - people love just to have an opinion.”

Image: Getty Images

How an Aussie artist captured the attention of A-list celebrities

An Australian artist who specialises in vivid contemporary pieces of art has captured the attention of celebrity A-listers, including pop singer Miley Cyrus.

Nick Thomm left his native Melbourne in 2014 to move to New York in order to pursue his passion for art.

Just two years later, he received a message on Instagram from Miley Cyrus, who commissioned the up and coming artist to paint a mural in her Los Angeles home.

“Miley's awesome. She just followed me on Instagram and we started talking,” he told Westwood.

“Literally, two weeks later I was at her house putting up a mural for her. She's a really inspiring person to be around - a full genius. She kind of inspired me to get over to the United States permanently. She's been awesome to me.”

The hyper-coloured mural is saturated with radiant shades of purple, blue and orange on a pink backdrop.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by NICK THOMM (@nickthomm)

His abstract street-style artworks explore a modern colour scheme through a deep hallucinatory style that draws you into the art.

The mural serves as the backdrop for Miley Cyrus’s disco ball-esque grand piano, giving her music room a futuristic feel.

Nick owes a lot of his international success to Instagram, which he used to promote his works and his small exhibits he hosted during his first years in New York.

This self-exposure led to working with numerous celebrities, as well as international brands such as Nike, Maybelline and Adidas.

He's also made paintings for museums around the world including the Moco Museum in Barcelona.

Meet the ute-driving pup bringing joy to the world

The owners of a now-viral pup who was filmed behind the wheel of a work ute have been blown away by the fact that their innocent video has brought so much joy to people around the world.

Lexi the Jack Russell was recorded steering the Zschech family ute around a paddock on their farm in south-western Victoria – and the global responses they have received have been overwhelming.

"I've had messages from Finland, Canada, America, Great Britain," Cam Zschech, Lexi's owner, told A Current Affair.

"It took off a bit more than I thought. I had all these people messaging me. I can't believe it. I still can't believe it really."

Ian and Cam have a 1500-acre farm just outside Hamilton, Victoria, and they run grain crops and have about 2000 ewes.

"I've been here (for) the long 21 years of my life. It's a place that I'll probably be forever," Cam said.

"We got Lexi about 14 months ago. She was really quiet when we got her. We thought we had a good one, but she's turned out to be so much more than that."

As it turned out, Lexi has become an internet sensation after her efforts behind the wheel.

"I learned to drive with Dad in the passenger seat. We'd put it in low gear and we'd idle along and I would steer. I thought I'd try and teach Lexi," Cam said.

The attention that their pooch has received has brought the father and son even closer together.

"It's great," Ian said. "And here we are, near Hamilton. It's a beautiful part of the world."

For those wondering just how accomplished Lexi is behind the wheel, don't overthink it. To efficiently feed all the sheep, Cam often leaves the ute in low gear and Lexi jumps on the back to distribute hay around the paddock.

However, Lexi's latest role, where she sits up in the driver seat, is only to make people smile. She’s only ever left in the ute on their property, in a controlled environment, along a flat paddock.

Cam and Ian said they are just out to give everyone a laugh.

Image: A Current Affair

Nick Cave’s son has passed away at 31

Australian rocker Nick Cave has confirmed that his eldest son, Jethro Lazenby, has passed away at 31 years old.

In a statement with multiple media outlets in the early hours on Tuesday morning, Cave asked for privacy for the family in the wake of the tragic news.

“With much sadness, I can confirm that my son, Jethro, has passed away,” Cave wrote. “We would be grateful for family privacy at this time.”

Jethro’s cause of death hasn’t been confirmed.

Born in 1991 to Melbourne-based model Beau Lazenby, Jethro reportedly didn’t meet his father until he was seven and spent his early years in Australia, per 9Honey.

After moving to the United Kingdom, Jethro began a career in modelling.

“It was difficult at the time, but it turned out great in the end,” Cave told The Guardian of their relationship in 2018.

“To my eternal regret I didn’t make much contact with Jethro in the early years. I now have a great relationship with him.”

Jethro’s death comes just two days after he was reportedly released from jail after pleading guilty to one count of unlawful assault against his mother, and was due to return to court this month for sentencing.

It is also the second time Cave and Lazenby have lost one of their children to an early death, after their son, Arthur, suffered a fatal brain injury in 2015 after falling off a cliff near the family’s Brighton home in the UK.

Arthur, 15, was found unconscious by passersby who attempted CPR. After he was airlifted to a local hospital, he was pronounced dead.

Cave and Lazenby also share a 21-year-old son, Earl, who is Arthur’s twin, while Cave shares a 30-year-old son with his ex-wife, Brazilian journalist Viviane Carneiro.

Image: @jethrocave (Instagram)

Daylight robbery: Men arrested for nicking a bridge

Eight men have been arrested in the Indian state of Bihar for stealing an iron bridge in broad daylight.

When several men arrived in the village of Amiyavar with an excavator and gas torches, locals believed the government was finally removing an old metal bridge that had become more of a nuisance than useful.

The men, including some from the state government’s irrigation department, arrived at 7am and worked until dusk for three days. They cut the iron with gas torches and loosened the ground with excavators before taking the metal away in a rented van.

However, a local journalist told the BBC that no one knew the men were actually stealing the metal, before depositing it at the warehouse of a local scrap dealer for a profit.

“No-one suspected it was a heist,” Jitendra Singh, a journalist who lives “200 metres from the bridge”, told the outlet.

Unique theft in #Bihar, thieves became officers of the irrigation department and stole a 60 feet long iron bridge

In Nasriganj, Rohtas, thieves posing as officers, with the help of local personnel, 1/2@UtkarshSingh_ 📽️ pic.twitter.com/jhnTbUSYDw

— Siraj Noorani (@sirajnoorani) April 8, 2022

The operation was reportedly supervised by Arvind Kumar, who worked part-time at the irrigation department. He allegedly told anyone who asked that “the work had an official sanction”.

Ashish Bharti, the senior police official leading the investigation, said Mr Kumar was one of the men arrested.

“Irrigation department official Radhe Shyam Singh, the van owner and the owner of the scrapyard are also among those arrested. We are looking for at least four more people,” Mr Bharti said.

“Even three days ago, the structure of the bridge was there but suddenly it disappeared and we informed local officials,” Amiyaway local Suresh Kumar told The Hindu.

Pawan Kumar, who lives in a neighbouring village, made the discovery that the operation wasn’t legitimate after he tried contacting Mr Singh and couldn’t reach him.

“I tried calling irrigation department official Radhe Shyam Singh, but when he didn’t answer, I called a senior official to ask why they had not followed procedure - the authorities are expected to issue a tender and the work is given to the lowest bidder,” Mr Kumar told the BBC.

The remnants of the 500 tonne bridge that was stolen in Rohtas, Bihar. Thieves had stolen bits and pieces of the metal to put it to other use or sell it as scrap for a few rupees,” Shailendra Singh, who lives in the village, told the BBC.

“But what happened last week was daylight robbery.”

Metal is stolen in many parts of India, as well as the US, UK and parts of Europe.

In India, manhole covers and water pipes are common targets, while signalling and power cables, overhead line equipment, and clips to hold train tracks in place in England have caused thousands of hours of delays each year.

Image: Twitter
