Antarctic heat, wild Australian winter: what’s happening to the weather and what it means for the rest of the year

Martin Jucker, UNSW Sydney

Australia’s south and east have seen freezing temperatures and wild weather this winter. At the same time, the continent as a whole – and the globe – have continued to warm.

What’s going on? As ever, it’s hard to pinpoint a single cause for weather events. But a key player is likely an event unfolding high above Antarctica, which itself may have been triggered by a heatwave at surface level on the frozen continent.

Here’s what’s happening – and what it might mean for the rest of this year’s weather.

When the stratosphere heats up

Out story begins in the cold air over Antarctica. July temperatures in the stratosphere, the layer of air stretching between altitudes of around 10 and 50 kilometres, are typically around –80°C.

The winds are also very strong, averaging about 300 kilometres per hour in winter. These cold, fast winds loop around above the pole in what is called the stratospheric polar vortex.

Occasionally, persistent high air pressure in the lower atmosphere can influence large-scale waves that extend around the globe and up into the stratosphere. There they cause the strong winds to slow down, and the air high above the pole to become much warmer than normal.

In extreme situations the stratospheric winds can completely break down, in what is called a “sudden stratospheric warming” event. These events occur every few years in the northern hemisphere, but only one has ever been observed in the south, in 2002 (though another almost happened in 2019).

Pushing polar weather our way

Once the polar vortex is disturbed, it can in turn influence the weather at the surface by steering weather systems from the Southern Ocean towards the Equator. However, this is a slow process.

The impact at the surface may not be felt until a few weeks or even months after the initial weakening of the stratospheric polar vortex. Once it begins, the stratospheric influence can prevail for more weeks or months, and helps meteorologists make long-range weather forecasts.

In climate science terms, the weak stratospheric winds put an atmospheric system called the Southern Annular Mode into a negative phase. The main effect of this on surface weather is to bring westerly winds further north.

In winter, this means polar air outbreaks can reach places like Sydney more easily. As a result, we see more rain over much of southern Australia, and snowfall in alpine regions. In spring and summer it means westerly winds blow over the continent before reaching the east coast, bringing warm and dry air to southeastern Australia.

The exact impact of a weaker polar vortex depends on how much and for how long the weather systems are being pushed further northward. It will also depend on other weather influencers such as El Niño and the Indian Ocean Dipole.

This winter’s weirdness

Unpicking exactly why any weather event occurs is tricky at the moment, because global weather has been absolutely crazy over the past 12 months or so. Global temperatures are much higher than usual, which is making unusual weather very common.

But there are indications that the stratosphere is having some influence on our weather this winter.

The stratospheric polar vortex started to warm in mid-July, and is about 20°C warmer than the long-term average. At the time of writing, the winds slowed down to about 230 kilometres per hour, 70 kilometres per hour slower than average.

These numbers mean that, technically, the event does not qualify as a sudden stratospheric warming. However, further warming may still occur.

If we look at how southern hemisphere winds have evolved in the past few weeks, we see a pattern which looks like what we would expect from a sudden stratospheric warming.

First, we see warming in the stratosphere which is at first accompanied by a poleward shift of weather systems.

The stratosphere’s influence then propagates downward and seems to induce many weeks of weather systems shifted towards the equator.

This coincides with the period of cold and rainy weather along Australia’s east coast in late July and the beginning of August. Forecasts suggest the Southern Annular Mode will be a long way from normal conditions in the first half of August – four standard deviations below average, which is extremely rare.

How initial warming high in the stratosphere ends up changing winds near the surface and pushing polar weather further north. Z.D. Lawrence / StratObserve / Annotated by Martin Jucker

A surface disturbance

The main reason for the polar vortex to slow down is disturbances from the surface. Weather over the Amundsen Sea near Antarctica in the South Pacific is an important source of these disturbances.

This year, we have seen disturbances of this sort. There have been near-record surface temperatures around Antarctica.

These disturbances may be due to the globally high ocean temperatures, or even lingering effects of the eruption of the Hunga Tonga volcano in 2022. But more research will be required to confirm the causes.

What should we expect for the rest of the year?

There are two pathways until the end of the year. One is that the stratospheric winds and temperatures recover to their usual values and no longer influence surface weather. This is what the forecasts from Ozone Watch seem to suggest.

Another is that the stratosphere keeps warming and the winds keep being slower all the way into summer. In this scenario, we would expect a persistent negative Southern Annular Mode, which would mean a spring and potentially even summer with warmer and drier than usual weather over southeastern Australia, and a small ozone hole.

The seasonal forecasting models from the European Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasts seem to favour this second scenario.<!-- End of code. “Insufferable” bride rinsed over her list of “wild demands”

A bride-to-be has been slammed online after her list of “wild demands” was posted by one of her bridesmaids, who were expected to spend thousands of dollars to be part of the “wedding of the century”.

The bride wasn’t afraid to set her sights high ahead of her nuptials, and wasn’t shy in asking for a mixture of friends and sponsors to pay for it.

One of her bridesmaids shared the exhaustive list of non-negotiable demands to Reddit, in which she asked her bridal party to “step up their game” months before the wedding.

“Welcome to the beginning of my wedding journey, I'm thrilled to have you all along for the ride, but let's be clear, this is my day and everything needs to be perfect,” the bride began.

“I know what I want and I won't settle for anything less, get ready to follow my lead and make this the most fabulous day ever - this isn't just a wedding, it's basically the met gala.”

She first demanded weekly one hour zoom progress meetings, in addition to everyone meeting at a private member's club every Tuesday.

Then there was a weekend of luxury dress fittings with “no skips allowed”, followed by demands for everyone to spend approximately $700 on champagne brunches, hotel rooms and travel.

The expenses didn’t stop there, with bridesmaids expected to shell out $1,200 for beauty treatments, and $500 accommodation for her 'safari barbie' themed engagement party.

The packed and pricey itinerary continued with the girls then jetting off to Ibiza for “bachelorette party number one”.

“Mother in law is leading the charge and will send Venmo requests soon so you guys can budget,” the bride said.

The bridesmaids were also expected to buy the bride a gift, which she felt she deserved for all her hard planning, and expected her bridal party to throw her the “perfect” bridal shower.

“It needs to be elegant, chic and totally Instagrammable; think designer decorations and gourmet catering, make sure it's perfect, this is your responsibility to handle and make amazing,'” she said.

There was one last trip for final dress fittings and then a reminder to set aside another $1,000 for the wedding weekend itself, which promised to be amazing.

The post was quickly met with a wave of backlash with many commenting on the bride’s “entitled and narcissistic” behaviour, with one saying the list should be titled “how to lose friends in one page”.

Some people said the hefty cost was one thing, but that it was “horrible” how much time the bridesmaids were expected to give up for planning every week, for months leading up to the big day.

“The minute I read ‘weekly one hour check in meeting’ I would have been out. I don't do that s*** for my actual job, let alone this bankruptcy in the making,” one woman said.

Wild conspiracy theory emerges over leaked horse cruelty video

The equestrian world continues to reel after a controversial video surfaced showing British dressage star Charlotte Dujardin whipping a horse 24 times, described by critics as "like a circus elephant".

However, the timing of the video's release, just days before the Olympics, has led to allegations of sabotage from within the British dressage community.

In a statement to members, British Dressage Chief Jason Brautigam condemned Dujardin's actions as "completely unacceptable" but expressed skepticism about the motives behind the leak. "I do find claims that this was done to 'save dressage' somewhat disingenuous, given that it was timed to cause maximum damage to our sport," Brautigam wrote. He urged members to be kind to Dujardin, acknowledging the human element in the controversy.

Madeline Hall, a former dressage correspondent for Horse & Hound magazine, echoed Brautigam's sentiments. Speaking to The Daily Mail, Hall remarked, "The timing of this video days before the Olympics smells of sabotage. To me, it is suspect."

The video's release has led to significant fallout for Dujardin, including the loss of sponsorships and a tarnished reputation, jeopardising her chance to become Britain's most decorated female Olympian.

The identity of the individual who leaked the video remains unknown, though the complainant's lawyer, Stephan Wensing from the Netherlands, has refused to comment on the matter. Wensing's involvement has fuelled speculation, given the historic rivalry between the British and Dutch equestrian teams.

The Dutch team, which Dujardin defeated at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, have quickly distanced themselves from the incident. A spokesperson for the Netherlands team stated, "We regret the expulsion of our fellow athlete but also condemn the training method used by Dujardin in the video. This has no place in our equestrian sports, where the welfare of the horse comes first."

As the dressage community grapples with the scandal, Brautigam reminded people of the need for a compassionate response. "Charlotte Dujardin has done the right thing by accepting responsibility and expressing remorse," he said. "While we do not condone her behaviour, we must remember that there is also a human element to this – and, regardless of what has happened, she still deserves our understanding."

Dujardin, who was a favourite for a Damehood if she secured a medal in Paris, now faces an uncertain future in her sport. The dressage community continues to debate the ethical and competitive implications of the video, with calls for increased focus on the welfare of horses and the integrity of the sport.

Images: Instagram / Good Morning Britain

Wild reason why woman divorced her husband

A woman has asked for advice online after she explained the wild reason why she is divorcing her husband.

Taking to Reddit's popular "Am I The A**hole?" thread, the mother explained that after her husband sat in the car for too long, she decided to end her two-year marriage.

As she began to recall the situation, she prefaced the story by saying that for many years, her partner always liked to stay in the car five to 10 minutes after he got home.

“I don’t know why he does it, but he talked about a past traumatic experience he had when he came home and caught his ex cheating on him,” the Redditor wrote. “Because of that he’d just spend few minutes in his car before he enters his home as response to his trauma.”

While the woman is understanding of her husband's unusual car quirk, she said he does not take into account how it negatively impacts her and their family.

According to the Reddit writer, his prolonged period in the car makes her “uneasy” and has caused several arguments, especially when he’s sat in the driveway when guests are inside, or "when dinner is waiting on him and he’d take 10 minutes silently sitting in the car.”

She went on to share that her biggest concern was finding her husband sitting in the car during a crisis, which was realised when a family emergency unfolded at home.

The woman explained that her eight-year-old son fell and tripped when walking down the stairs, breaking his ankle as a result and needed to be taken to hospital.

She then called her husband and asked if he could leave work to take him to the emergency room, saying, “Then I called and called and then I was stunned when I looked out the window and I saw him sitting outside the house in his car. I was both shocked and angry.”

According to her husband, he had been sitting in the car for eight minutes and said that he wouldn’t come inside to help until his 10 minutes lapsed because he didn’t feel “comfortable.”

The original poster noted, “He told me to get my son ready to take him to the hospital, but I started screaming at him nonstop telling him this was a family emergency and that he was out of his mind to behave like that.”

The mother took her son to the hospital with the help of a neighbour and refused to answer her husband's calls when he finally emerged from the car.

Later, she decided his response was so uncalled for that she took herself and her son to her mother's place and said she wanted a divorce from her husband of two years.

“He tried to rationalize and justify what he’s done saying he could not help it and that he was nervous and wanted to help my son but felt stuck,” the Redditor said.

She continued, “I refused to reply to his messages and days later his family literally harassed me saying I was making my husband’s trauma more severe and that I disrespected his boundaries.”

After time had passed from the situation, the woman wondered if she had been too rash in her decision, and asked those online for their advice.

Her post was met with hundreds of comments, with many saying they believe her husband is suffering from obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).

“It sounds like some form of OCD to me,” one person commented, while another agreed: “It sounds like he is stuck in a compulsive behavior.”

The original writer confessed she had asked him to seek professional help for his behaviours, but he wasn’t up for it, saying, "He had refused professional help and his family sided with him.”

To this, one reader added, “The fact that he has refused to seek help for it. Peak selfishness. Leaving is warranted. Best luck to you and your boy.”

“If he refused professional help then you have your answer. You need to be able to rely on your husband in case of an emergency and he proved to you that you can’t. You’re definitely NTA (not the a**hole,” another argued.

“Don’t marry him”: Bride-to-be shares wild altercation with her future in-laws over her wedding dress

A woman has been told to “run” from her fiancé after sharing a wild conversation she had with her future in-laws about her wedding dress.

The bride-to-be shared that ever since she was a child, she wanted to wear her mother’s wedding dress on her own big day.

However, the woman was then confronted by her soon-to-be in-laws, with drama ensuing over her wedding dress.

Taking to Reddit’s “Am I The A**hole?” page, the woman explained, "My mother's wedding dress has been passed down for generations and I remember being a little girl dreaming of walking down the aisle in it."

Despite her wishes to wear the family heirloom on her big day, she said things went south at a dinner at her sister-in-law’s (SIL) house when she "tapped her spoon against the glass and said that she had to make a toast."

"She then said she would be right back before going into another room and returning with a large plastic bag," the bride continues.

"Everyone seemed to be excited but I just felt confused."

As she "awkwardly smiled", her SIL opened the bag to reveal her wedding dress from her wedding two years earlier as her in-laws began clapping, as her future sister-in-law announced she wanted the bride to wear her dress at her upcoming nuptials.

"I tried to smile but I guess I didn't do a good job of hiding my disappointment and everyone began asking me what was wrong," the bride-to-be continues, adding that she tried to explain that she wanted to wear her mother's wedding dress.

At this point, her SIL began to cry and her in-laws began berating her, causing the bride to burst into tears and run outside.

"My fiancé didn't even come after me and after crying my eyes out on the steps for what felt like hours, he finally came outside and yelled at me to get into the car," she says.

Confused, she got into the car only for her fiancé to berate her for making "such a big scene" leaving him feeling "embarrassed in front of his family."

"He sounds so mad and he even said he couldn't believe he chose to marry such a 'bitchy c--t' (his exact words)."

The woman tried to explain how important it was to her to wear her mother's dress and that she had already promised her mother she would be wearing it on her big day.

"I felt like my fiancé's family planned this and put me on the spot thinking I wouldn't stand up for myself and just agree to wear SIL's dress," she continues.

"I don't think I did anything wrong but a part of me thinks I should have just gone along with it and then told SIL in private that I wouldn't be wearing the dress."

Hundreds of people were quick to comment on her post, suggesting that she “run” not only from her in-laws, but from her partner as well.

"Ma'am you need to leave that whole family behind including your fiancé," one said. "You just had a peek into your future if you carry on with this relationship."

"Don't you dare marry that man!!!" another said.

"The problem doesn't exist as the wedding shouldn't be happening anymore," another added.

One Redditor suggested she "be thankful that he is showing you who he really is before you marry him."

"You have just had a glimpse of what your future is going to look like if you go through with your wedding."

Influencer's windscreen smashed in wild road rage act

Video footage has captured the scary moment a New Zealand influencer's windscreen got smashed in a wild road rage incident.

Social media influencer Chantelle Baker claimed that the blue Mazda Demio had cut off another car behind her and began tailgating her when she was driving 40km/hr as she was carefully navigating a near-crash.

“They started to scream at me from their car, trying to indicate [and] use their hands to tell me to pull over so they could go past,” she said in a video posted to Instagram.

“I obviously didn’t. We go a few hundred metres and they decide to throw a rock at my car with my eight-month-old baby asleep in the back seat.”

Baker said she saw them down a side road a couple of minutes later and followed their car to get the licence plate.

She then recalled them pulling into an area near an old petrol station in Rangiora, Waimakariri, where the footage was filmed.

In the viral clip, which has racked up over seven million views on TikTok, the two women can be seen exiting the Mazda and sprinting towards Baker's car.

One of them ran up the bonnet and on to the windscreen causing it to shatter.

The same woman then goes to the driver's door and tells Baker to "f*** off".

Baker then reverses and drives away.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Chantelle Baker (@chantellebakernz)

New Zealand Police have said that they were aware of the incident and are in the initial stages of investigation.

“Police received reports of an incident in the King Street area around 1pm on Saturday where one driver apparently followed another driver after a car failed to merge correctly,” they told news.com.au.

“The cars have stopped at a petrol station where a person has reportedly got out and jumped on the other person’s vehicle, breaking a window. The wild reason woman is suing her boyfriend

A woman from New Zealand is suing her boyfriend after he failed to give her a lift to the airport, causing her to miss her flight.

The woman, who has remained anonymous, asked her partner to pick her up from home and drop her at the airport, but he failed to show up.

As a result, she missed her flight and was forced to travel the following day, missing a concert she had tickets for.

The woman was so enraged that she took her partner of six years to the Disputes Tribunal to try and get him to cover some of the money she’d lost.

The woman also wanted to be compensated because her boyfriend had not stayed at her house while she was away to look after her dogs, which he had agreed to do.

She claimed their agreement had constituted a legally binding agreement and was seeking to be paid travel costs and the cost of putting her dogs in kennels.

Tribunal referee Krysia Cowi said in a statement, “partners, friends and colleagues make social arrangements, but it is unlikely they can be legally enforced unless the parties perform some act that demonstrates an intention that they will be bound by their promises”.

“When friends fail to keep their promises, the other person may suffer a financial consequence but it may be that they cannot be compensated for that loss,” she said.

Cowie said the promises made within the relationship fell short of a contract and dismissed the woman’s case, with the couple breaking up as a result.

What the fox! Driver finds wild animal trapped in his car

A motorist has shared the startling moment a fox got trapped in the front grill of his car, after he accidentally hit the wild animal while travelling at 80km/h.

While driving down a country road in South Australia on Saturday night, the man behind the wheel said he was shocked when he felt something slam into the car.

When he later checked the vehicle, he was astonished to find the angry fox trying to break free from behind the front grill of the car.

“Y’all thought you had a bad day,” he can be heard saying while filming the animal furiously biting the front grill in an attempt to escape.

In a series of videos posted to TikTok, the man documented the fox's attempts at escape, before informing his followers that he had enlisted the help of a local vet to help free the animal.

“Took him to the vet, they sedated him and we got him out safely, the poor guy,” he said, adding he was glad — and impressed — the fox was alive after such a high-speed impact.

Throughout his videos, many took to the comments to offer their advice to free the fox, as one person suggested "popping the lid", with the driver explaining that he did but “couldn’t even see him through the bonnet”.

The saga has been viewed more than 400,000 times in the past 24 hours, with numerous people saying they were stunned the fox wasn’t seriously injured. “How does this even happen?” one person wondered.

“What in the fox is going on here!” another joked, while others pondered how the man would explain the incident to his insurance company.

“Insurance would never believe you if you didn’t have that video,” someone else added.

Wild moment giraffe snatches toddler from car

A father has recalled the heart-stopping moment his toddler was snatched by a giraffe at a safari park in Texas.

Jason Toten, 24, his fiancé Sierra Robert, 23, and their daughter Paisley were at Fossil Rim Wildlife Centre in Glen Rose where visitors can drive-through the park and get close to wild animals.

"We were having a little family day, just getting out of the house," Jason told a local news outlet.

While the family were admiring the view, one giraffe slowly approached them and the pair encouraged their daughter to offer it some food, but within an instant, the two-year-old girl was lifted into the air.

"I looked out the back window and I saw the giraffe … and then up she went," Jason recalled.

The giraffe, who was only trying to grab the bag of food from Paisley, accidentally hoisted the toddler up by her shirt, with other park visitors behind them capturing the wild moment.

Sierra reacted immediately and clung to her child, as she was pulled into the air, and all it took for the giraffe to let go was a stern "hey".

The giraffe then dropped the tot back into the car uninjured, and throughout the entire ordeal Paisley was the bravest of them all.

"I guess it startled the giraffe. She wasn't even scared," Jason recalled.

"As soon as her mom caught her, she went 'oh.'"

"It scared me but after it was all over, we realised everyone was safe and unharmed, and we laughed about it," Jason added.

After the incident, the family took Paisley to the gift shop and "all she wanted was a giraffe toy and a giraffe T-shirt."

"We ended up getting her both, we figured she deserved it."

Images: Facebook

Hollywood star reveals breast cancer diagnosis

Olivia Munn has revealed that she was diagnosed with breast cancer last year, and has undergone a double mastectomy following her diagnosis.

In an emotional post shared on Instagram, the actress shared a series of photos of her receiving treatment over the past year, and how she first found out about her diagnosis in an effort to "help others find comfort, inspiration and support on their own journey".

"In February of 2023, in an effort to be proactive about my health, I took a genetic test that checks you for 90 different cancer genes," she said.

"I tested negative for all, including BRCA (the most well-known breast cancer gene). My sister Sara had just tested negative as well. We called each other and high-fived over the phone. That same winter I also had a normal mammogram."

"Two months later I was diagnosed with breast cancer.

"In the past ten months I have had four surgeries, so many days spent in bed I can't even count and have learned more about cancer, cancer treatment and hormones than I ever could have imagined.

"Surprisingly, I've only cried twice. Ted Lasso star ordered to pay massive child support sum

Jason Sudeikis has been ordered to pay ex Olivia Wilde an enormous sum of child support, as a bitter two-year custody battle draws to a close.

According to new court filings obtained by Page Six, the Ted Lasso star has allegedly agreed to pay his ex $27,500 ($A42,800) per month in child support for their two kids, Otis, 9, and Daisy, 6.

The hefty settlement has been based on Sudeikis' reported 2023 income of $10.5 million ($A16.3 million) and Wilde’s estimated income of $500,000 ($A778,000).

“The parties agree that child support for the minor children in the amount of $27,500 per month is sufficient to maintain the needs of the minor children considering Jason’s station in life … is consistent with each child’s best interest, and application of the guideline would be unjust or inappropriate in this case,” the court papers reportedly state.

The legal proceedings began two years ago, and took a dramatic turn in 2022 when Wilde, who was promoting her new movie Don't Worry Darling at the time, was served legal papers while on stage delivering a speech at CinemaCon.

At the time, a source told Page Six that Wilde was mortified over the brazen act.

“It seemed unthinkable to her, and it took a moment to set in, but as mortifying as it was, she did not want to give a reaction,” the insider explained.

Since then, things have improved for the couple, as they were both seen putting on a united front at Otis' soccer game in LA.

Wilde and Sudeikis started dating in November 2011 and got engaged in January 2013. They welcomed their two kids before separating in November 2020.

Stevie Nicks faces wild backlash over Hawaii fires post

Stevie Nicks, the celebrated icon from Fleetwood Mac, has drawn a mixed response among her admirers due to her extensive reflection on the Maui fires, with even her most devoted supporters not hesitating to express their concerns.

The legendary artist took to social media to convey her thoughts regarding the tragic Maui fires, a subject close to her heart. However, her detailed account of how the catastrophe impacted her, particularly in relation to her niece's disrupted holiday plans, has drawn a divisive reaction.

In a post entitled "“Lahaina is not gone ~ It is just away,” Nicks opened up about her personal connection to the coastal town that fell victim to the destructive fires, claiming the lives of at least 96 individuals.

“As I am sure you have heard – the island, Maui, where I own a house I have been staying at since the 80s – and the small village, city, most magical place on earth, Lahaina, burned to the ground over the last few days,” she wrote.

She further explained the distressing situation involving her young niece, her spouse, and their child, who had just embarked on a much-needed vacation before the niece's return to her studies in psychology. Regrettably, their vacation was cut short due to the onset of the fire.

Nicks also delved into the profound connection that the members of Fleetwood Mac share with Maui. “This island, in so many ways, defines Fleetwood Mac and me and our families. My truth was that I wanted a house here just so I could spend time in Lahaina walking the streets; visiting the art galleries – sitting on the rock wall – Most all the opals I wear on my fingers came from a store on Front Street. I hope the sweet lady who owned that store was able to grab all her opals and run. I hope she made it out.”

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Stevie Nicks (@stevienicks)

The response among her fan base has been polarised. Some voiced disappointment with Nicks for placing emphasis on her niece's disrupted vacation rather than the tragic loss of nearly 100 lives in the fires. They also questioned the absence of any links or information directing her substantial Instagram following, which numbers 1.4 million, towards aiding the fire survivors.

One Instagram user commented, “I’ve been a Stevie fan forever and a day but this is Completely tone deaf! There are people who have LOST THEIR HOMES, their livelihood and their loved ones. Regular people – not rich, and not tourists. “Ruining” someone’s well deserved holiday is the absolutely LEAST of it all. True colours are shining and it’s such a disappointment.”

While detractors were vocal, others stood up for Nicks, contending that her personal connection to the island warranted her sharing her story just as much as anyone else – with one post in particular offering a particularly insightful explanation:

"People commenting with criticism: I sincerely understand but what you don’t realize is that this is a woman who doesn’t go on the internet or understand how any of that works. She hand writes these notes to express her heart and has an assistant post them. She has always given back without advertising it. The concept of crowdfunding donations on social media is something she really just has no idea about. If she knew better, I could understand the frustration but she’s just not a part of social media discourse whatsoever. I can guarantee that she is not only giving back but reaching directly out to individuals she has crossed paths with there over the years. Stevie has always been charitable, but has never been a citizen of the internet."

Images: Instagram

Julia Faustyna takes DNA test to prove wild identity claims

Julia Faustyna, the Polish woman who is convinced she is the missing Madeleine McCann, has reportedly taken a DNA test to prove her claim.

However, in a stunning twist to the tale, Faustyna’s private investigation with spokesperson Dr Fia Johansson has led the young woman to consider the possibility that she may actually be another missing child - Livia Schepp, who went missing with her twin sister in Switzerland in 2011.

“I’ve spoken to her about this and she is open to the fact she could be any missing child out there,” Dr Johansson said while speaking to The Sun. “Not just Madeleine. Julia wants to know the truth about who she is.”

While Faustyna’s main argument has involved the physical similarities between herself and Madeleine McCann, one of the pivotal points in her story is how she recognised a suspect from McCann’s case - a man she has named as her own abuser.

“One of the reasons she made the connection to Madeleine is because one of the suspects in Madeleine’s case looks very much like a man who she says abused her as a child,” Dr Johansson explained. “But the same man could be connected to Madeleine and other missing children, this is how predators and traffickers work.”

“Julia has taken a DNA test,” she confirmed, “and we are investigating if it’s possible to check her DNA with that of [the] missing Livia. We are investigating all possibilities at this stage.”

Livia Schepp - and her twin sister Alessia - went missing when they were six, after their father abducted them from Switzerland in 2011. Days later, he took his own life in Italy, and when police discovered the body, the twins were nowhere to be seen.

Faustyna, who claims to have post-traumatic amnesia due to sexual abuse in her childhood, lacks clear recollection of her formative years, and has stated while she can recall holidays, she doesn’t “recall my mother being there, for example, or my stepfather, much less my dad.”

Whether or not any of Faustyna’s theories are true, the public will have to keep speculating, as no results have yet been shared.

However, Faustyna’s viral “@iammadeleinemccan”, where she was sharing updates and side-by-side comparisons with her followers, has since been deleted from the platform.

The removal coincides with reports of the DNA test, and after Faustyna closed both her Facebook and Tiktok accounts, disputing her parent’s claim that she was only in this for attention when she said “if you don’t like me, please unfollow. I don’t want fans or followers.”

Images: Instagram, Twitter

How Olivia Newton-John's family remember her

Seven months on from the passing of Olivia Newton-John, her family are still navigating their emotional journey of grief.

Her daughter Chloe Lattanzi and her husband John Easterling opened up about how they are remembering Olivia in all aspects of their life, as they believe she is still with them in spirit.

Chloe and John told A Current Affair's Ally Langdon that they regularly look back on the fond memories they shared as a family, and connect with her in a unique way.

"I talk to her every day," Lattanzi said while remembering her late mum in the emotional interview.

"She's always there and I wear her every day, so her energy is on my body," Lattanzi said as she touched a cross necklace around her throat.

"But I would love to hold her again."

John also looks back on their "15 extraordinary years together", saying "There was a little bit of magic."

Chloe admitted that when she had to get up and speak at her mother's state memorial on Sunday, her "heart was beating out of her chest".

"As soon as I stepped up there I felt my mum come inside of me, my body. I felt her energy … and it was supernatural. The love in the room carried me through that," she said.

Lattanzi said she talks to her mother every day when she meditates or is walking, saying "It might sound crazy to some but whenever I have a doubt or I have a question I speak to her."

Olivia Newton-John died in August 2022 after a long battle with cancer, which Chloe said her mother always handled in a positive way.

Lattanzi said her mum was always very positive and never considered her cancer diagnosis as a "war or battle".

"She wasn't in a battle or fighting cancer ... we were living life and living life well," Easterling added.

Her daughter said despite her positive attitude, her mother also shared moments of vulnerability with her, which she wanted people going through their own cancer journeys to know was normal.

"I don't want people who are going through cancer to think that it's not ok to break down and have a hard day, or cry, or be scared," Lattanzi said.

"I know my mum would want them to know that."

Chloe went on to say she believed her mum had comes to terms with dying, as she admitted, "I think she stayed for me and John."
