"Finally!": 2023’s Sexiest Man Alive crowned

Patrick Dempsey has been named People’s Sexiest Man Alive for 2023!

The 57-year-old actor known for his role as Derek "McDreamy" Shepherd on Grey's Anatomy snagged the title from last year's winner, Marvel heart-throb Chris Evans.

In his interview with the publication, the actor said that he will use his new-found status to promote “something positive”.

“I’m glad it’s happening at this point in my life,” he said.

“It’s nice to have the recognition, and certainly my ego takes a little bump, but it gives me the platform to use it for something positive.”

When asked about his reaction to finding out he was 2023's Sexiest Man Alive the actor joked that it was a long-time coming.

“I was completely shocked, and then I started laughing, like, this is a joke, right? I’ve always been the bridesmaid!” he joked.

“I’d completely forgotten about it and never even contemplated being in this position. So my ego is good.”

Introducing PEOPLE’s 2023 #SexiestManAlive, Patrick Dempsey. 🔥 https://t.co/4eYnCAG1Zr pic.twitter.com/5V0xVblnaE

— People (@people) November 8, 2023

The father-of-three also joked about how his children, Talula, 21, and 16-year-old twins Sullivan and Darby, will react to this news.

“They’re just going to make fun of me and pick on me and figure out every reason why I shouldn’t be,” he said.

“Which is good, they keep me young.”

Funnily enough, his newfound status was also met with confusion, mostly from the younger generation who have no idea who he is.

“Who the hell is Patrick Dempsey?” one confused Gen Zer wrote.

“You all are making up new people every day; who is Patrick Dempsey?” another commented.

This left many Millennials feeling old.

“People ... not knowing who Patrick Dempsey is making me feel like a grandma. What do you mean you didn’t grow up watching Grey’s Anatomy, and you weren’t obsessed with Derek Sheppard since you were 10,” one commented.

“There is an is actual difference in being 26 vs. being 23! Because I am seeing 23 yr olds not know who Patrick Dempsey is,” another added.

And not everyone who is a Millennial agreed with People's choice.

"I mean… yes back in the day. But seriously? How is it not someone who is hot right now? I haven’t even seen/heard him mentioned in years," commented one person.

Is it 2005?” another wrote.

“Um, he is so 2007,” a third commented.

Regardless, Dempsey has aged like fine wine and many have said it's about time.

“Finally! Ain’t nobody under this post showed me a white man finer!"

Image: People Magazine/ X

6 Irish films to watch this St. Patrick’s Day

Looking for a way to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day that doesn’t involve drinking green beer and wearing a sequined hat? Why not snuggle into the comfiest couch you own and watch some of these wonderful Irish films?

1. Once

This 2007 film is a pure delight to behold. Simultaneously an inspiring musical and tender love story, Once features mesmirising performances from Markéta Irglová and Glen Hansard, and unforgettable music. The film won an Academy Award for its signature tune, “Falling Slowly”, and was reimagined as an award-winning Broadway musical in 2012.

2. In the Name of the Father

A co-production between Irish, British, and American creative forces, this 1993 courtroom drama is based in the true story of four people falsely convicted of the 1974 Guildford pub bombings. In the Name of the Father is captivating, with standout performances from lead Daniel Day-Lewis, and from Emma Thompson.

3. Sing Street

Hailed by some as the best original musical of 2016 (over the beloved La La Land), Sing Street follows the exploits of a boy growing up in 1980s Dublin. As a way to escape his troubled family life, and in an effort to impress the girl he likes, Robert Lawlor starts a band. The rest is pure, musical joy.

4. The Crying Game

This thriller explores nationality, sexuality, gender, and race, with the perfect backdrop of the Northern Ireland conflict setting the scene. Considered one of the greatest British films of all time, The Crying Game explores a member of the IRA, who has a brief but impactful encounter with a soldier. To say more risks ruining the film, and that would be a shame.

5. Brooklyn

This endearing romance from 2015 solidified Saoirse Ronan as a bona-fide star, reminding the world why she earned her first Oscar nomination at the age of 13 (in Joe Wright’s Atonement). Ronan’s Eilis immigrates to Brooklyn from her small Irish town, hoping to find employment. After arriving in Brooklyn, Eilis finds work, studies bookkeeping, and meets a charming young suitor, but misses her beloved sister. Sir Patrick Stewart admits he uses marijuana everyday

Sir Patrick Stewart has admitted he uses medical marijuana daily to help him manage the pain of his debilitating arthritis symptoms.

The 76-year-old veteran actor revealed his usage to support a UK-first research initiative by Oxford University exploring the benefits of cannabis-based medicines.

In a statement, Stewart said that he uses an ointment, spray and edible marijuana medicine to help him with his arthritis.

“Two years ago, in Los Angeles, I was examined by a doctor and given a note which gave me legal permission to purchase, from a registered outlet, cannabis-based products, which I was advised might help the ortho-arthritis in both my hands.

“This, it would seem, is a genetically-based condition. My mother had badly distorted and painful hands.

“I purchased an ointment, spray and edibles. The ointment, while providing some relief from the discomfort, was too greasy to use during daytime and so I only use it at night.

“It helps with sleep as the pain was reduced. The spray, however, is much more usable and I spray my fingers and particularly my thumb joints several times a day.”

Stewart adds: “The spray very quickly evaporates and leaves my hands quite dry, though with a slight burning or tingling sensation, which is not unpleasant.

“I believe that the ointment and spray have significantly reduced the stiffness and pain in my hands.

“I can make fists, which was not the case before I began this treatment."

“I have had no negative side effects from this treatment and the alternative would have been to continue taking NSAID's, Advil, Aleve and Naproxen, which are known to be harsh on the liver and to cause acid reflux.

“This is an important step forward for Britain in a field of research that has for too long been held back by prejudice, fear and ignorance. I believe this programme of research might result in benefits for people like myself as well as millions of others.”
