Strength training has a range of benefits for women. Here are 4 ways to get into weights

Erin Kelly, University of Canberra

Picture a gym ten years ago: the weights room was largely a male-dominated space, with women mostly doing cardio exercise. Fast-forward to today and you’re likely to see women of all ages and backgrounds confidently navigating weights equipment.

This is more than just anecdotal. According to data from the Australian Sports Commission, the number of women participating in weightlifting (either competitively or not) grew nearly five-fold between 2016 and 2022.

Women are discovering what research has long shown: strength training offers benefits beyond sculpted muscles.

Health benefits

Osteoporosis, a disease in which the bones become weak and brittle, affects more women than men. Strength training increases bone density, a crucial factor for preventing osteoporosis, especially for women negotiating menopause.

Strength training also improves insulin sensitivity, which means your body gets better at using insulin to manage blood sugar levels, reducing the risk of type 2 diabetes. Regular strength training contributes to better heart health too.

There’s a mental health boost as well. Strength training has been linked to reduced symptoms of depression and anxiety.

Improved confidence and body image

Unlike some forms of exercise where progress can feel elusive, strength training offers clear and tangible measures of success. Each time you add more weight to a bar, you are reminded of your ability to meet your goals and conquer challenges.

This sense of achievement doesn’t just stay in the gym – it can change how women see themselves. A recent study found women who regularly lift weights often feel more empowered to make positive changes in their lives and feel ready to face life’s challenges outside the gym.

Strength training also has the potential to positively impact body image. In a world where women are often judged on appearance, lifting weights can shift the focus to function.

Instead of worrying about the number on the scale or fitting into a certain dress size, women often come to appreciate their bodies for what they can do. “Am I lifting more than I could last month?” and “can I carry all my groceries in a single trip?” may become new measures of physical success.

Lifting weights can also be about challenging outdated ideas of how women “should” be. Qualitative research I conducted with colleagues found that, for many women, strength training becomes a powerful form of rebellion against unrealistic beauty standards. As one participant told us:

I wanted something that would allow me to train that just didn’t have anything to do with how I looked.

Society has long told women to be small, quiet and not take up space. But when a woman steps up to a barbell, she’s pushing back against these outdated rules. One woman in our study said:

We don’t have to […] look a certain way, or […] be scared that we can lift heavier weights than some men. Why should we?

This shift in mindset helps women see themselves differently. Instead of worrying about being objects for others to look at, they begin to see their bodies as capable and strong. Another participant explained:

Powerlifting changed my life. It made me see myself, or my body. My body wasn’t my value, it was the vehicle that I was in to execute whatever it was that I was executing in life.

This newfound confidence often spills over into other areas of life. As one woman said:

I love being a strong woman. It’s like going against the grain, and it empowers me. When I’m physically strong, everything in the world seems lighter.

Feeling inspired? Here’s how to get started

1. Take things slow

Begin with bodyweight exercises like squats, lunges and push-ups to build a foundation of strength. Once you’re comfortable, add external weights, but keep them light at first. Focus on mastering compound movements, such as deadlifts, squats and overhead presses. These exercises engage multiple joints and muscle groups simultaneously, making your workouts more efficient.

2. Prioritise proper form

Always prioritise proper form over lifting heavier weights. Poor technique can lead to injuries, so learning the correct way to perform each exercise is crucial. To help with this, consider working with an exercise professional who can provide personalised guidance and ensure you’re performing exercises correctly, at least initially.

3. Consistency is key

Like any fitness regimen, consistency is key. Two to three sessions a week are plenty for most women to see benefits. And don’t be afraid to occupy space in the weights room – remember you belong there just as much as anyone else.

4. Find a community

Finally, join a community. There’s nothing like being surrounded by a group of strong women to inspire and motivate you. Engaging with a supportive community can make your strength-training journey more enjoyable and rewarding, whether it’s an in-person class or an online forum.

Are there any downsides?

Gym memberships can be expensive, especially for specialist weightlifting gyms. Home equipment is an option, but quality barbells and weightlifting equipment can come with a hefty price tag.

Also, for women juggling work and family responsibilities, finding time to get to the gym two to three times per week can be challenging.

If you’re concerned about getting too “bulky”, it’s very difficult for women to bulk up like male bodybuilders without pharmaceutical assistance.

The main risks come from poor technique or trying to lift too much too soon – issues that can be easily avoided with some guidance.

Erin Kelly, Lecturer and PhD Candidate, Discipline of Sport and Exercise Science, University of Canberra

This article is republished from The Conversation under a Creative Commons license. The rental housing crisis is hurting our most vulnerable and demands a range of solutions (but capping rents isn’t one of them)

Andrew Beer, University of South Australia and Emma Baker, University of Adelaide

Roughly one in three Australians rent their homes. It’s Australia’s fastest-growing tenure, but renting is increasingly unaffordable. From 2020 to 2022, our research found a large increase in the proportion of renters who said their housing was unaffordable.

Change in Australian renters’ assessments of affordability from 2020 to 2022. Baker, Daniel, Beer, et al, forthcoming, The Australian Housing Conditions Dataset, doi:10.26193/SLCU9J, ADA Dataverse

Australians are concerned about the pace of rent rises. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese says increasing housing supply and affordability is the “key priority” for tomorrow’s national cabinet meeting.

The crisis has impacts well beyond affordability. The rental sector is where the worst housing accommodates the poorest Australians with the worst health.

The unhealthy state of rental housing

Forthcoming data from the Australian Housing Conditions Dataset highlight some of these parallel challenges:

it’s often insecure – the average lease is less than 12 months, and less than a third of formal rental agreements extend beyond 12 months

rental housing quality is often very poor – 45% of renters rate the condition of their dwelling as “average, poor, or very poor”

poor housing conditions put the health of renters at risk – 43% report problems with damp or mould, and 35% have difficulty keeping their homes warm in winter or cool in summer

compounding these health risks, people with poorer health are over-represented in the rental sector. Renters are almost twice as likely as mortgage holders to have poorer general health.

Measures that potentially restrict the supply of lower-cost rental housing – such as rent caps – will worsen these impacts. More households will be left searching in a shrinking pool of affordable housing.

It’s all about supply

Fixing the rental crisis needs more than a single focus on private rental housing. The movement between households over time between renting and buying homes means the best solutions are those that boost the supply of affordable housing generally. No one policy can provide all the answers.

Governments should be looking at multiple actions, including:

requiring local councils to adopt affordable housing strategies as well as mandating inclusionary zoning, which requires developments to include a proportion of affordable homes

improving land supply through better forecasting at the national, state and local levels

giving housing and planning ministers the power to deliver affordable housing targets by providing support for demonstration projects, subsidised land to social housing providers and access to surplus land

boosting the recruitment and retention of skilled construction workers from both domestic and international sources.

The biggest landlord subsidy isn’t helping

More than 1 million Australians claim a net rent loss (negative gearing) each year. Even though negative gearing is focused on rental investment losses, it is not strictly a housing policy as it applies to many types of investment.

The impact of negative gearing on the housing system is untargeted and largely uncontrolled. As a result, it’s driving outcomes that are sometimes at odds with the need to supply well-located affordable housing.

The most impactful action the Australian government could take to deliver more affordable rental housing nationwide would involve refining negative-gearing arrangements to boost the supply of low-income rentals. These measures may involve

limiting negative gearing to dwellings less than ten years old

introducing a low-income tax credit scheme similar to the one in the United States.

We can learn much from the US, where the Low-Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) scheme subsidises the acquisition, construction and renovation of affordable rental housing for tenants on low to moderate incomes. Since the mid-1990s, the program has supported the construction or renovation of about 110,000 affordable rental units each year. That adds up to over 2 million units at an estimated annual cost of US$9billion (A$13.8billion).

This scheme is much less expensive per unit of affordable housing delivered than Australia’s system of negative gearing.

Closer to home, the previous National Rental Affordability Scheme showed the value of targeted financial incentives in encouraging affordable housing. This scheme, available to private and disproved investors, generated positive outcomes for tenants. The benefits included better health for low-income tenants who were able to moved into quality new housing.

A raft of evaluations have demonstrated the achievements of this scheme.

Crisis calls for lasting solutions

Short-term measures such as rent caps or eviction bans will not provide a solution in the near future or even the medium or long term. Instead, these are likely to worsen both the housing costs and health of low-income tenants.

Reform focused on ongoing needs is called for. Solutions that can be implemented quickly include the tighter targeting of negative gearing and the introduction of a low-income housing tax credit.

Talking about change, as the national cabinet is doing, will begin that process of transformation, but it must be backed up by a range of measures to boost the supply of affordable housing. This, in turn, will improve the housing market overall as affordable options become more widely available.<!-- Below is The Conversation's page counter tag. As countries ranging from Indonesia to Mexico aim to attract digital nomads, locals say ‘not so fast’

Should your community welcome digital nomads – individuals who work remotely, allowing them freedom to bounce from country to country?

Our research has found that workers are eager to embrace the flexibility of not being tied to an office. And after experiencing economic losses due to the COVID-19 pandemic, cities and countries are concocting ways to entice visitors.

One idea involves stretching the meaning of tourism to include remote workers.

Today, a growing number of countries offer so-called “digital nomad visas.” These visas allow longer stays for remote workers and provide clarity about allowable work activities. For example, officials in Bali, Indonesia, are looking to formalize a process for remote workers to procure visas – “the faster, the better,” as the head of the island’s tourism agency put it.

Yet pushback from locals in cities ranging from Barcelona to Mexico City has made it clear that there are costs and benefits to an influx of remote workers.

As we explain in our new book, “Digital Nomads: In Search of Freedom, Community, and Meaningful Work in the New Economy,” the trend of “work tourism” comes with a host of drawbacks.

Wearing out their welcome

For as long as there’s been tourism, locals have griped about the outsiders who come and go. These travelers are usually a welcome boost to the economy – up to a point. They can also wear out their welcome.

Perhaps the classic example is Venice, where high numbers of tourists stress the canal-filled city’s fragile infrastructure.

In the U.S., New Jersey shore residents have long used the term “shoobies” to denigrate the annual throng of short-term summer tourists. In our research on digital nomads in Bali, locals referred to digital nomads and other tourists as “bules” – a word that roughly translates as “foreigners.”

Generally the terms are used to express minor annoyance over crowds and increased traffic. But conventional tourists come and go – their stays usually range from a couple of nights to a couple of weeks. Remote workers stay anywhere from weeks to months – or longer. They spend more time using places and resources traditionally dedicated to the local residents. This raises the chances that outsiders become a grating presence.

Excessive numbers of visitors can also raise sustainability concerns, as waves of tourists tax the environment and infrastructure of many destinations. Many of Bali’s beautiful rice fields and surrounding lush forests, for example, are being converted into hotels and villas to serve tourism.

Digital nomads look to stretch their dollars

Whether they’re lazing around or plugging away on their laptops, privileged tourists ultimately change the economics and demographics of an area.

Their buying power increases costs and displaces residents, while traditional businesses make way for ones that cater to their tastes. Where once there was a neighborhood food stand, now there’s an upscale cafe.

This dynamic is only exacerbated by long-term tourists. Services like VRBO and Airbnb make it easy for digital nomads to rent apartments for weeks or months at a time, and people around the world are increasingly alarmed at how quickly such rentals can change the affordability and character of a place.

Living a vacation lifestyle on a long-term basis implies a need to choose lower-cost destinations. This means that remote workers may particularly contribute to gentrification as they seek out places where their dollars go furthest.

In Mexico City, residents fear displacement by remote workers able to pay higher rents. In response to calls to choose Mexico City as a remote working destination, one local succinctly expressed opposition: “Please don’t.”

And in New Orleans, almost half of all properties in the historic Tremé district – one of the oldest Black neighborhoods in the U.S. – have been converted to short-term rentals, displacing longtime residents.

Culture becomes commodified

Neocolonialism in tourism refers to the way processes such as overtourism and gentrification create a power imbalance that favors newcomers and erodes local ways of life.

“There’s a distinction between people who want to learn about the place they are in and those who just like it because it’s cheap,” one digital nomad living in Mexico City recently told the Los Angeles Times. “I’ve met a number of people who don’t really care that they’re in Mexico, they just care that it’s cheap.”

Bali, where as much as 80% of the island’s economy is estimated to be affected by tourism, offers a stark example.

People come to Bali to be immersed in the culture’s spiritual rituals, art, nature and dance. But there’s also resentment over yoga lovers, resortgoers and digital nomads “taking over” the island. And some locals come to see the tourism in and around temples and rituals as the transformation of something cherished – the nuanced and spiritual aspects of their culture – into experiences to be bought and sold.

For instance, Balinese dance performances are huge tourist draws and are even featured in global promotions for tourism on the island. Yet these performances also have cultural and spiritual meaning, and the impact of tourism on these aspects of dance is debated even among performers.

So there is inevitably friction, which can be seen in the high levels of petty crimeagainst foreigners. Neocolonialism can also pit people from the same country or culture against one another. For example, conflicts arise between local Balinese taxi cooperatives and taxi services that employ drivers from other parts of Indonesia.

Although remote employees still make up a small portion of the overall tourist population, their work-related needs and longer stays mean they’re more likely to use services and places frequented by locals.

Whether this leads digital nomads to be welcomed or scorned likely depends on both government policies and tourists’ behavior.

Will governments take measures such as protecting locals from mass evictions, or will landlords’ desire for higher rents prevail? Will guests live lightly and blend in, trying to learn the local language and culture? Or will they simply focus on working hard and playing harder?

As remote work reaches an unprecedented scale, the answers to such questions may determine whether “the faster, the better” attitude toward digital nomad visas and other incentives continues.

This article originally appeared on The Conversation.

NASA’s Perseverance rover sends back Mars soundscape playlist

Nearly two years after its launch, and almost 18 months after landing on Mars, NASA’s Perseverance rover has hours of audio recordings from the red planet’s atmosphere.

So, what does Mars sound like? On the whole, it’s quiet. Very quiet. But the recordings did pick up interesting weather events and changes which give us a better overall picture of Mars’s clime.

Perseverance’s primary mission is to explore sediments in a dormant river delta on the edge of the 45 kilometre-wide Jezero Crater, to learn about the crater’s formation and hopefully find signs of ancient life. But microphones are light and cheap, so it made sense to add a couple to the rover’s instruments.

The first audio from Mars was sent by Perseverance earlier this year. Now, a year’s worth of recording from the Martian atmosphere has been condensed into about five hours of sound.

The findings are due to be presented by Baptiste Chide of the Los Alamos National Lab during a seminar, “Mars soundscape: Review of the first sounds recorded by the Perseverance microphones,” at the 182nd Meeting of the Acoustical Society of America tomorrow, May 25, in Denver in the US.

With no large dynamical natural phenomena, extant animal species (that we know of), industrial civilisation, or extreme weather events, you’d expect Mars to be pretty silent. And it is. Under the same conditions on Earth, sounds are 20 decibels louder than on Mars.

“It is so quiet that, at some point, we thought the microphone was broken!” says Chide.

But, like giving a new music album a second run-through, closer listening revealed some fascinating phenomena. The group heard much variability in the wind and abrupt changes in the atmosphere, see-sawing from calm to intense gusts.

The team noticed that the red planet’s soundscape is seasonal. During winter, carbon dioxide freezes in the polar caps. This causes changes in atmospheric density, and environmental volume fluctuates by about 20%. Atmospheric CO2 also causes high-pitched sounds in the distance to become fainter.

The rover also used laser sparks to calculate the speed of sound’s dispersion, confirming a theory that high-frequency sounds travel faster than low frequencies.

“Mars is the only place in the solar system where that happens in the audible bandwidth because of the unique properties of the carbon dioxide molecule that composes the atmosphere,” notes Chide. While the rover will continue to record audio as it travels across Mars’s surface, Chide believes that the technique could be applied to studies of other celestial bodies. Planets and moons with denser and more volatile atmospheres, such as Venus and Titan, may yield even more information as sound waves interact more strongly and travel further.

This article was originally published on Cosmos Magazine and was written by Evrim Yazgin. Loyal to the end: touching detail surrounding Symonds' tragedy

The cricket world is in mourning following the devastating death of legendary player Andrew Symonds.

The 46-year-old died on Saturday night after his car veered off the road in a single vehicle accident near his home in Hervey Range, in the city of Townsville, Queensland.

Two witnesses who were first on scene following the awful accident have given more insight into what happened – including the fact that Symonds' two very loyal Blue Heelers were also in the vehicle at the time.

“One of them was very sensitive and didn’t want to leave him,” the unnamed witness told Courier Mail.

“It would just growl at you every time we tried to move him or go near him. My partner tried to get (Symonds) out of the car, to put him on to his back.

“He was unconscious, not responsive and had no pulse.”

Waylon Townson was another witness and told 9News that Symonds had no pulse when he tried to help.

"He was stuck in there, so I tried to pull him out," he said.

"(I) started doing CPR and checked his pulse but I didn't get much response."

Police continue to investigate the incident which has seen Symonds leave behind a wife and two kids.

Symonds’ wife Laura has spoken out since his death saying the family is still in “shock” and described him as “the most laid-back person”.

“I’m just thinking of the two kids. He was such a big person and there is just so much of him in his kids,” she said.

“Nothing stressed him out. He was an extremely chilled operator. So practical.

“He was never good with his phone but he always had time for everyone."

Images: Instagram

Australia is putting a rover on the Moon in 2024 to search for water

Last month the Australian Space Agency announced plans to send an Australian-made rover to the Moon by as early as 2026, under a deal with NASA. The rover will collect lunar soil containing oxygen, which could eventually be used to support human life in space.

Although the deal with NASA made headlines, a separate mission conducted by private companies in Australia and Canada, in conjunction with the University of Technology Sydney, may see Australian technology hunting water on the Moon as soon as mid-2024.

If all goes according to plan, it will be the first rover with Australian-made components to make it to the Moon.

Roving in search of water

The ten-kilogram rover, measuring 60x60x50cm, will be launched on board the Hakuto lander made by ispace, a lunar robotic exploration company based in Japan.

The rover itself, also built by ispace, will have an integrated robotic arm created by the private companies Stardust Technologies (based in Canada) and Australia’s EXPLOR Space Technology (of which I am one of the founders).

Using cameras and sensors, the arm will collect high-resolution visual and haptic data to be sent back to the mission control centre at the University of Technology Sydney.

It will also collect information on the physical and chemical composition of lunar dust, soil and rocks — specifically with a goal of finding water. We know water is present within the Moon’s soil, but we have yet to find a way to extract it for practical use.

The big push now is to identify regions on the Moon where water sources are more abundant, and which can deliver more usable water for human consumption, sample processing, mining operations and food growth.

This would also set the foundation for the establishment of a manned Moon base, which could serve as a transit station for further space exploration (including on Mars).

The ispace moon lander was displayed in Washington DC. Courtesy of Australian Embassy staff

Moon-grade materials

Once the Hakuto lander takes off, the first challenge will be to ensure it lands successfully with the rover intact. The rover will have to survive an extreme environment on the lunar surface.

As the moon rotates relative to the Sun, it experiences day and night cycles, just like Earth. But one day on the Moon lasts 29.5 Earth days. And surface temperatures shift dramatically during this time, reaching up to 127℃ during the day and falling as low as -173℃ at night.

The rover and robotic arm will also need to withstand the effects of space radiation, vibrations during launch, shock from the launch and landing, and exposure to dust and water.

At the same time, the arm must be light enough to conduct advanced manoeuvres, such as grabbing and collecting moon rocks. Advanced space-grade aluminium developed in Australia will help protect it from damage.

The TechLab antenna chamber at the The University of Technology Sydney is being used to test communication signals which will be critical to this mission.

The team behind the mission is currently in the process of testing different designs of the robotic arm, and figuring out the best way to integrate it with the rover. It will be tested together with the rover at a new lunar test bed, at the EXPLOR Space Technologies facility in New South Wales.

Like the one used by NASA, this test bed can mimic the physical and chemical conditions on the Moon. It will be critical to determining whether the rover can stay mobile and continue to function under different environmental stressors.

Step into your astronaut boots

The rover will also send back data that allows people on Earth to experience the Moon with virtual reality (VR) goggles and a sensor glove. Haptic data collected back by the robotic arm will essentially let us “feel” anything the arm touches on the lunar surface.

We plan to make the experience available as a free app — and hope it inspires future generations of space explorers.

Joshua Chou, Senior lecturer, University of Technology Sydney

This article is republished from The Conversation under a Creative Commons license. Royal memorabilia once owned by Prince William and Kate is up for grabs

An impressive piece of royal memorabilia is up for grabs.

The personal vehicle of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, a black Range Rover, is up for auction.

The pricey item has been labelled as a “rare opportunity to acquire a vehicle with royal roots”.

Prince William and Duchess Kate used the luxury vehicle in 2013 – the same year Prince George was born.

It is now being offered by auction house Bonhams with the expectation for it to sell between $54,000 - $72,000.

The car has been billed as an “ex-royal household” vehicle and even comes with its original number plate.

"Usually, Land Rovers and Range Rovers used by the Royal Household have the vehicle registration numbers changed once out of service, making it difficult to confirm their famous history," the listing on Bonhams' website reads.

Range Rovers and Land Rovers have long been popular choices for the royal family.

"Overall we are told the car is in excellent condition and drives very well, presenting itself as a rare opportunity to acquire a vehicle with Royal roots," the listing says.

The car isn't being sold by William and Kate, as it was purchased in July 2020, from a used car dealership before it came into Bonhams’ possession.

The late Prince Philip’s 2016-plated Range Rover was up for sale back in 2018 with the eye-watering price of $234,340.

The vehicle was fit out with custom features, including covert lighting and police emergency lights, along with grab handles for the Duke of Edinburgh and Queen Elizabeth.

Most notably, the same vehicle was used by Prince Philip to pick up then-US President Barack Obama during a state visit to the United Kingdom back in 2016.

The Northern Territory’s secret mountain range

Ever heard of the West MacDonnell Ranges? We didn’t think so. Here’s why you need to add it to your travel wishlist.

Where are they?

The MacDonnell Ranges stretch for hundreds of kilometres either side of Alice Springs. As the name suggest, the West MacDonnell Ranges roll out to the west of the town and became part of a national park in 1992. The park is easily accessible by round and can be reached all year round, though it is more comfortable during the cooler months from April to September.

Why are they so special?

The short answer is, they are incredible beautiful. People tend to imagine the centre of Australia is nothing but dry and red. The West MacDonnell Ranges are stunningly beautiful with ochre coloured quartzite peaks, dramatic gorges, permanent waterholes and twisting trees under an endless bright blue sky. It’s a simple, quiet sort of beauty that you will find yourself falling in love with.

The area is the traditional home of the Western Arrernte people, who have been living here for at least 20,000 years. The have a strong connection with the land and their Dreamtime stories tell of the giant caterpillars that became the mountains.

What can I do?

The most famous tourist attraction in the West Macs (as they are known) is the Larapinta Trail. It’s one of the best walking trails in the country, a 223-kilometre ribbon that winds right through the ranges. There are 12 different sections, so you can walk part of it for a day or take on the whole journey over a couple of weeks. The walk runs very close to the main road, so it’s easy to pack a day bag and head out to walk one of the easier sections.

There are lots of other great walking, trekking and cycling trails around the region. You can cool off with a dip in a hidden watering hole, climb to the top of one of the towering peaks or enjoy the shade of a steep gorge. There are many rare and threatened plant species to be found as well as curious wildlife and majestic birds. The area used to be part of Australia’s great inland sea, so there are lots of fossils embedded in the rocks – keep your eyes peeled.

Have you ever been to the West MacDonnell Ranges?

Destination focus: Yarra Valley and Dandenong Ranges

It’s been Victoria’s favourite holiday destination for more than a century and there is still plenty to love about the Yarra Valley and Dandenong Ranges.

Do

Many people believe the ancient forests of the Dandenong Ranges are full of magic and looking at the lush rainforest, hidden glens and trickling streams leading to fern-fringed waterfalls, it’s easy to see why. There are many walks winding through the forest, ranging from easy strolls of just a couple of kilometres to the 40-kilometres Lilydale-Warburton Rail Trail. Listen for the distinctive call of the lyrebirds that inhabit the forest, as well as curious wallabies, wombats and echidnas.

See

Coombe, the sprawling home of opera legend Dame Nellie Melba, has only recently opened to the public and is one of the hidden gems of the region. The beautifully restored house sits in seven acres of garden and has a world-class restaurant, as well as a small museum filled with priceless Melba memorabilia. Book a guided tour to get the full experience. You’ll also find one of the country’s most innovative and groundbreaking museums in Yarra Valley, the Tarrawarra Museum of Art. The building itself is architecturally arresting and the contemporary art exhibitions inside change with the seasons, so it’s always a good time to visit.

Drink

The Yarra Valley is the birthplace of the Victorian wine industry, with vineyards dating back to the 1830s. It’s still one of the closest wine regions to a capital city and there are more than 50 wineries producing some of the finest wines in the country. Almost 40 of these have cellar doors where you can sample some excellent cool climate wines and many have fine restaurants or art galleries attached. If you tire of wine, there’s also a cider and ale trail that takes you to the region’s leading breweries.

Stay

Step back in time and spend the night at the Yarra Valley Grand Hotel, built in 1888 and recognised as a landmark historic hotel by the National Trust. The luxurious Chateau Yering dates back even further, to the 1850s, and is surrounded by one of the oldest vineyards in the state. There are plenty of great accommodation options on vineyards, from small self-contained cottages to stylish modern studios.

What’s your favourite thing to do in the Yarra Valley and Dandenong Ranges? “Free range” parenting: neglect or common sense?

It is my 6-year-old daughter's greatest wish to walk home from the park on her own.

It's just 100 metres of wide pathway, which turns into our quiet little street. My catastrophising mind says: "Forget it kid, walking all that way is a dangerous prospect, what with all those child-catchers and heavy traffic to contend with."

But I say: "Sure." And then I tail her up the path as though at least one of us is playing What's the time, Mr Wolf.

This is my small foray into "free-range parenting" - a style of parenting that is supposed to give your littl'uns freedom to learn self-reliance by being allowed to test limits out in the real world.

We can call it free-range parenting but really, it's just a dinky title for how we grew up - and I'm talking the 1970s here, when certainly at the age of 8 or 9 my siblings and I, along with our mates, would roam a neighbourhood consisting of beach, bush tracks and all that lay in between. Home time was when dusk fell and we could smell dinners being cooked as we meandered home for our own.

The only time I recall my mother being remotely worried was when a friend and I were a tad late for dinner and I told her it was because we'd got stuck several metres up on a shed roof, where we'd been playing, naturally.

And all this is to say nothing of our exploits "nicking out" at night to do what, I can't exactly recall.

Now that I'm a parent I have grasped firmly the adage "do as I say, not as I did".

If I had it my way, I'd probably tether my daughter to me. For life. At the moment, she quite likes the idea of living with mummy and daddy till she's 40. But then she's also told us she'd like to marry us, so that's where she's at right now.

All this free-range malarkey has reared its public head with the story from Montgomery County, Washington, about the parents of a couple of free-range kids – a 10-year-old and a 6-year-old - who were allowed to walk a mile to their home unsupervised.

The police stopped them halfway, took them home and got the child protection service involved.

The parents are determined their children will continue to range freely. Meanwhile, outraged comments from both free-range and conservative parents ensue online.

Tracey McLeish, mother of four, made headlines recently after her 7-year-old son, Jacob, fell several metres off a rock in White's Bay, near Blenheim.

He was not seriously injured but her and husband John's parenting has been criticised online in social media.

Tracey and John responded to the backlash by saying their son was just being a boy.

They are firm believers in giving kids scope to be independent.

Their three older sons – aged 10, 7 and 5 – all walk 1km to school together crossing two roads to get there.

"We taught them from a young age that roads and cars were dangerous so they are really on to it," Tracey says.

"We gave them rules and we gave them our trust and they have not betrayed that trust.

"There's no reason kids can't do this on their own. By giving them independence to walk to school they gain confidence in themselves, self-reliance and self-worth."

Safer world today

Russell Ballantyne, co-director and teacher at Early Childhood on Stafford, in Dunedin, has long been an advocate of free-range parenting. The father of three grown-up free-range kids runs what he terms a "risk-taking centre". That is to say, they have ropes and swings, kids leap from great heights and ride their bikes fast.

Ballantyne says today's world is safer than the one he grew up in "but the mentality is that we are under siege".

"We think risk is hiding behind every lamp-post in the neighbourhood. Fear has become the dominating young parent's response.

"Those parents who let their kids walk home from the park in Montgomery County made the conscious effort of giving their children responsibility but they're being punished for it. We should be aspiring to do what they did."

If you give your children freedom, he says, these same children will not be scared to make decisions in life, they'll know their capabilities. They are the people who will become our future leaders.

"Ninety-nine point nine per cent of people are good and yet we treat them as if they are evil and that's where we have lost the plot.

"We have to have faith in our children. We have to have faith in our society, in our villages. If you do not have faith in your village then as a community, we do not exist."

Sure, he says, we have to monitor our children and make sure they are OK but we should not always be the source of their entertainment.

"That's not healthy. The way for children to know themselves is to have the freedom to try."

Lenore Skenazy would have a field day with my parenting style.

Skenazy, to her naysayers' chagrin, embraces rather self-deprecatingly the title of "World's Worst Mum" bestowed on her after she let her kid take the subway home by himself at the age of 10 in New York's Manhattan.

The backlash from this act was huge and enough for her to launch the Free-Range Kids website, write a book and star in her own TV show. So, what would a free-range parent let an almost 6-year-old do?

Skenazy, mum to two boys now aged 16 and 18, reckons we could let them walk down the street and knock on a friend's door to play or maybe walk to school with a friend, depending on the area you live in and how far away the school is.

Heart palpitations kick in. It's OK, Skenazy says. "Take a moment to think back to your own childhood.

"Think back to when you were a kid and try to recall the times you enjoyed the most.

"A lot of people recall making forts, playing ball with their buddies. Most recall doing these things without a parent.

"You might be giving your kids organic bananas and violin lessons but you could be missing the one thing that you recall so fondly. Why would you keep that precious thing from them? Give them the free-range childhood you had." Skenazy says by giving the reins on our kids some slack, we're giving them the knowledge that their parents believe in them.

"If you're doing everything with, and for, your child, they get the message that you don't believe in them.

"I'm trying to restore perspective on the fact that our children are not in constant danger. We shouldn't have to make our decisions based on that premise."

But how has it come to this, I wonder. Why are we so freaked out by every conceivable danger for our kids?

The fact that we live in a fairly litigious society means we see everything through the lens of danger, Skenazy says.

"In America, recently a school got rid of all its swings because they read a study that said swings were the most dangerous equipment in the playground. If you look at everything like 'what terrible thing could happen?' nothing seems safe enough."

She coined the phrase "worst-first thinking", which means coming up with a worst-case scenario first and perceiving that it's likely to happen.

"It drives us crazy and it has no relation to reality. It has relation to fantasy.

"The fact that you can dream up something terrible doesn't make it more likely to happen."

The number of horrifying TV shows and 24-hour news add to our paranoia. So does the culture of "experts" where parents are fed so much information on how to do everything from hugging their own kid to how to have fun in the sun. It's got to the point where we don't even trust ourselves to make our own decisions without going to some expert to tell us what to do, she says.

Skenazy also points to the exploitation of parental fear - the easiest way to make a buck is from a terrified parent, she says.

"We live in constant fear of two things: One is that your child will be kidnapped and eaten and the other is that they won't get in to the best university. So, all these products and services exist to make them safe and make them get ahead."

Basically, Skenazy says, giving your child a free-range childhood gives them a place in the world, not just inside our homes.

But whether you're letting your 8-year-old walk to school on his own or letting your 6-year-old daughter walk up the path by herself, wannabe free- range parents might consider the story of a 10-year-old kid who rode his bike across the George Washington Bridge to New York City on his own.

He pedalled 30 kilometres down unfamiliar roads and busy streets, past neighbours and strangers, out into the unknown. "I didn't need help from anyone. It took me all day, but I found the way and did it myself," he recalled.

This free-range kid went to the moon. His name is Buzz Aldrin.

Tell us in the comments below, what’s your take on so-called “free-range” parenting?

Written by Bess Manson. The easy way to clean a greasy range hood

It’s something we use almost every day but sadly gets neglected come cleaning time. Our range-hoods serve an important purpose, but as you can imagine, they get quite a grimy build-up after countless nights slaving over the stove, making it less effective. So, in the spirit of a new season, why not give your range hood filter a much-needed spring clean? Thanks to TheKitchn, we’ve got the perfect step-by-step guide (with handy pictures above) to making your range hood look brand new.

You will need:

Very hot or boiling water

De-greasing dishwashing liquid

Baking soda

A non-abrasive scrubbing brush

Paper towels (or a tea towel)

Method:

Remove the filter from the hood. In most models, this should just mean popping or sliding it out of place from underneath.

Fill your sink with boiling water. The hotter the water, the cleaner the filter will be.

Add 1/4 cup baking soda and a good squeeze of de-greasing dishwashing liquid and swirl around with a brush until the water is soapy – make sure not to burn yourself with the hot water, though!

Put the greasy filters in the soapy water, making sure they’re fully covered, and let them soak for about 10 minutes.

Using the brush, scrub the filters thoroughly, adding more dishwashing liquid if needed.

Rinse the filters well in hot water and dry with paper towel or a tea towel.

Place the filters back into the range hood and repeat the cleaning process as needed (once a month is a good rule of thumb).

Easy, huh? If you have a smart cleaning trick, we’d love to hear it. Share it with us in the comments below.

Related links:

The quick and easy way to clean a dirty hairbrush

8 household spots dirtier than your toilet seat

The secret trick to cleaning your cheese grater

How to buy the most ethical eggs

Natalie Penn and Debbie Kertesz, the founders of an online resource for consumers looking to make conscientious decision called Consumers with Care, has released an ethical shopping guide for purchasing eggs. We’ve taken a look at the four main steps outlined in their guide.

1. Buy organic eggs

Organic standards ensure hens have access to a pasture, are stocked at a maximum density of 1500 birds/hectare and also ensures that none of the hens are de-beaked.

2. Choose accredited free-range eggs

The term “free-range” can mean a lot of things. Several organisations accredit farms that uphold high animal welfare standards, so look for ticks of approval.

3. Check out the alt.egg directory

For a comprehensive list of small-scale family farms producing true free range eggs check out alt.egg. These eggs are usually sold at farmers markets and specialty organic stores.

4. Questions to ask at a farmers market

Going to a farmers market is one of the best ways to ensure you’re getting a high quality egg. Use the opportunity to figure out where they’re from.

Here are some useful questions to ask:
- How many hens do you have, on how much land?
- How many hens in each flock and how many hens in each shed?
- Are the hens' beaks trimmed?
- What are the hens fed?
- Does the feed contain meat meal?
