Rod Stewart "puts the record straight" over family rift

Rod Stewart has taken to social media to hit back at the tabloids claiming his marriage to Penny Lancaster is on the rocks.

The 79-year-old singer explained that he "wanted to put the record straight" and disputed the reports that his marriage is in trouble.

"There is absolutely no rift between Penny and I and no disagreement over where we should reside, in fact it's the opposite," he wrote on Instagram.

"We moved permanently back to our beloved Britain a year ago but are fortunate to also have homes in different countries, which we love to visit."

"Originally we did think it made sense to sell our house in LA, but having spent a wonderful time there this summer with family and friends during my Vegas residency we realised that it makes sense to keep our house there," he explained.

"Two of my eldest children still live in Celtic House (the LA residence)."

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Sir Rod Stewart (@sirrodstewart)

He ended the message saying he could not be more in love with his wife after almost three decades together.

"Penny and I could not be more in love with each other after 27 glorious years. Please trust me on this..... there's no disharmony in our marriage.

"Rod 'a very lucky man' Stewart."

Fans praised the rockstar for standing up to the media.

"It was none of our business and I’m sorry you had to stand up for yourself like this. Stronger together for sure!" one wrote.

"Very sad when you have to put out statements like this because of intrusive media speculation. Glad you're both very happy and in love," another added.

"As if you'd be silly enough to let Penny go!!! She's absolutely incredible and you are indeed a lucky guy ❤️ you make a wonderful couple, ignore the rubbish, you know the truth and that's all that matters!" a third commented.

Images: Instagram

Teen with Down Syndrome sets new world record

A 19-year-old teen with Down Syndrome has conquered the London Marathon and became a Guinness World Record after just five months of training.

Lloyd Martin from Cardiff completed the 42.1 km course across the capital with his mother cheering him on.

Guinness World Record has awarded him the certificate for becoming the youngest person in his learning disability category to finish a marathon.

"I'm so excited to run London. I love being fit and healthy and I want to make my family and friends proud," the teenager said.

Mum Ceri Hooper also told the BBC how proud she was of her son's accomplishment.

"In Lloyd's words, it's achieving his dream," she said.

"Really anything is possible if you put your mind to it. With a bit of work, you can achieve it."

Recalling the experience, the proud mum said: "He ran continuously for 14 miles which is the longest he's ever run before."

Although Lloyd walked for a bit after his 14-mile-long streak, the crowd cheered him on every step of the way, and despite the challenge the mother-and-son duo had "a ball".

The pair were at a loss for words when he finally crossed the finish line and they both "burst into tears."

Lloyd is also now the third Welsh Special Olympics athlete to compete in the London Marathon.

Prior to completing the world-famous marathon, Lloyed had completed an astonishing 30 Parkruns.

Until last Christmas the teenager had never run further than three miles, but his mother was determined to get him marathon-ready.

Ceri, who has taken on the London Marathon four times, created a specialised training regime for her son which included weekly runs.

Lloyd managed to secure a spot in the marathon thanks to the help of the Special Olympics GB, where he is also a footballer and a gymnast.

Images: Facebook/ Twitter

Djokovic hit with record fine after Wimbledon loss

Novak Djokovic has been fined a whopping £6,100 ($11,700) for smashing his racquet in frustration against the net post during the men's singles final at Wimbledon.

The Serbian player, who suffered a five-set defeat against Carlos Alcaraz, marking his first loss on Centre Court in a decade, was penalised for "racquet abuse" when he was crucially broken in the deciding set.

Acknowledging the fine, the world No. 2, who earned $2.3 million as the runner-up, stated, “It was frustration in the moment. He played amazing to break my serve, which was enough to win the fifth set.”

The final match garnered a peak audience of 11.3 million viewers on the BBC, representing the highest viewership since Andy Murray's victory in 2016, which attracted 13.3 million viewers.

The incident where Djokovic smashed his racquet was not the only time he tested the umpire's patience during the tense final.

A fortunate spectator managed to acquire the now iconic broken racquet after the match.

Furthermore, Djokovic received a time violation for exceeding the allotted time during his serve in the second set. As a result, the umpire issued a warning for his behaviour.

Although never a crowd favourite at SW19, Djokovic faced boos from the Wimbledon audience due to his outburst that resulted in the destruction of his racquet.

The £6,100 fine imposed on Djokovic stands as the highest individual fine given during this year's tournament, setting a record in 2023.

Similarly, Mirra Andreeva also incurred two fines totalling £6,100 during the tournament.

The 16-year-old Russian player struggled to control her temper throughout the event and was observed angrily striking herself during the early rounds.

She was eliminated in the round of 16 after unintentionally handing a match point to Maddison Keys.

Keys was awarded the point when Andreeva was deemed to have thrown her racquet to the ground after slipping, as confirmed by the umpire.

This incident marked the second time Andreeva had been involved in a racquet-related episode, as she had received a warning earlier in the match for tossing her racquet across the grass.

After her defeat to Keys, Andreeva declined to shake hands with the umpire.

For her conduct in the round of 16, she received two fines of A$5,860 each.

Image: YouTube

Become a master record keeper

Whether you want to brush up your admin skills for your current job, seek new employment, or you’re simply keen to further your knowledge and become the master of your own personal admin, understanding the process of record keeping can be very rewarding. Take Over60 community member, Di Rieger, for example.

“During my time [working and volunteering] I assisted with customer service, collection and data entry of statistics, brochure management, information research, ticket and retail sales, preparation of the volunteer roster, writing applications for grant funding and writing award submissions,” Di explains.

From working in libraries to volunteering, her experience in research and administration tasks instilled her with the knowledge and know-how to start researching the genealogy of her family. An experience, which she says, changed her life.

“Would you believe that while doing an Internet search for my husband’s great grandfather I found information that I did not already have – his parent’s birth and death dates and places, his siblings and all of their birth dates and places and quite a lot more information. One of my cousins had never seen a photograph of [our relative] Thomas Oscar Miller that I found. She is thrilled that I am able to send her a digital copy of the photo.”

Whether you want to get a little more organised at home or take on a research project, learning the art of record keeping is a skill that is transferable to many fields. Here are some basic tips and tricks that will help get your personal affairs in order.

4 tips to become the master of your personal records

1. Divide and conquer

Nearly all of your admin and financial papers can be divided into three categories: records that you need to keep only for the calendar year or less, papers that you need to save for several years, and papers that you should hang onto indefinitely.

For example, you don’t really need to hang onto all of your ATM-withdrawal receipts, deposit slips or credit-card receipts do you? Once you’ve crosschecked receipts with your bank statement, you can throw them away.

While it’s a good idea to keep receipts for major purchases, it isn’t necessary to hold onto sales receipts for minor purchases after you've satisfactorily used the item a few times or the warranty has expired.

Shortly after the end of the calendar year, you should be able to throw out a slew of additional paper, including your monthly credit card and or other bank statements, utility bills (if they are not needed for business deductions), and monthly or quarterly reports for the previous year.

2. Paper place

Designate a place – a desk, corner or room – as the place where you deal with paperwork. If you don’t have the space for this, a drawer, cabinet, or closet where you can store bills and current records, situated near a table on which you can write, will do. Stationery items such as manila folders will come in handy for filing the papers, as will a file cabinet or cardboard box to hold the records. Keep your will, birth and marriage certificates, insurance policies, property deeds, and other permanent records in a safe but accessible place near your other financial documents, so you and your heirs will always be able to get to them quickly, if they need to.

3. Organised systems

Having a plan for how you process all records is key. A rudimentary filing system will do. The simplest method is to sort everything into categories – for example, tax related, financial or house. Each area should have it’s own folder or drawer. Then, when you sit down to either pay your bills or gather information, you'll have all the paperwork you need in one spot.

4. Stay in front

Once you have a system in place, you’ll want to make sure you stay on top of things and don’t have a backlog of unsorted paperwork. Set aside a half an hour a day to sift through old papers, perhaps while watching the news or listening to music.
You'll be amazed at the difference a little organisation makes.

Vinyl record sales keep spinning and spinning – with no end in sight

Over the past decade, vinyl records have made a major comeback. People purchased US$1.2 billion of records in 2022, a 20% jump from the previous year.

Not only did sales rise, but they also surpassed CD sales for the first time since 1988, according to a new report from the Recording Industry Association of America.

Who saw that coming?

I certainly didn’t. In the mid-1990s, I sold off my family’s very large collection of records over my wife’s protests. I convinced her we needed the space, even if the buyer was picking up the whole stash for a song.

Back then, of course, there were far fewer options for listening to music – it was years before on-demand streaming and smartphones.

I now teach at a business school and follow the economy’s latest trends. Sales of records have been increasing since 2007, and the data shows the vinyl record industry’s rebound still has not peaked. Last year, the music industry sold 41.3 million albums, more than in any year since 1988.

This resurgence is just one chapter in a broader story about the growing popularity of older technologies. Not only are LP records coming back, but so are manual typewriters, board games and digital cameras from the late 1990s and early 2000s.

There are many theories about why records are making a comeback.

Most of them miss the point about their appeal.

Why records and not CDs?

One suggestion is that sales have been spurred by baby boomers, many of whom are now entering retirement and are eager to tap into the nostalgia of their youth.

Data shows this theory is not true.

First, the top-selling vinyl albums right now are current artists, not classic bands. As of this writing, Gorillaz, a band formed in the late 1990s, was at the top of the vinyl charts.

Second, data from the recording industry shows the most likely person to buy a LP record is in Gen Z – people born from 1997 to 2012.

Another theory is that records are cheap. While that might have been true in the past, today’s vinyl records command a premium. “Cracker Island,” the Gorillaz album that is currently topping the vinyl sales charts, lists for almost $22 – twice the cost of the CD. Plus, subscribing to an online service like Spotify for 15 bucks a month gives you access to millions of tracks.

A third explanation for the resurgence is that people claim records have better sound quality than digital audio files. Records are analog recordings that capture the entire sound wave. Digital files are sampled at periodic intervals, which means only part of the sound wave is captured.

In addition to sampling, many streaming services and most stored audio files compress the sound information of a recording. Compression allows people to put more songs on their phones and listen to streaming services without using up much bandwidth. However, compression eliminates some sounds.

While LP records are not sampled or compressed, they do develop snap, crackle and popping sounds after being played multiple times. Records also skip, which is something that doesn’t happen with digital music.

If you’re really going for quality, CDs are usually a superior digital format because the audio data is not compressed and has much better fidelity than records.

Yet even though CDs are higher quality, CDs sales have been steadily falling since their peak in 2000.

The ultimate status symbol

In my view, the most likely reason for the resurgence of records was identified by an economist over a century ago.

In the late 1890s, Thorstein Veblen looked at spending in society and wrote an influential book called “The Theory of the Leisure Class.”

In it, he explained that people often buy items as a way to gain and convey status. One of Veblen’s key ideas is that not everything in life is purchased because it is easy, fun or high quality.

Sometimes harder, more time-consuming or exotic items offer more status.

A cake is a great example. Say you offer to bring a cake to a party. You can buy a bakery-made cake that will look perfect and take only a few minutes to purchase. Or you could bake one at home. Even if it’s delicious, it won’t look as nice and will take hours to make.

But if your friends are like mine, they’ll gush over the homemade cake and not mention the perfect store-bought one.

Buying and playing vinyl records is becoming a status symbol.

Today, playing music is effortless. Record-breaking "oldest" twin babies born

The world's "oldest" twin babies have been born more than 30 years after being frozen as embryos.

They could well be the longest-frozen embryos to ever result in a live birth, according to official records.

Lydia and Timothy Ridgeway were welcomed into the world on October 31st 2022, three decades after the embryos were created for an anonymous married couple using IVF on April 22nd 1992.

Lydia and Timothy's parents, Philip and Rachel, were never expecting to set a record as their fifth and sixth children were born.

"We liked the idea that we are saving lives that are trapped,” Philip, 35 and a software developer, told The New York Post.

The couple chose the oldest available option from National Embryo Donation Center (NEDC), a Knoxville, Tennessee, non-profit that provides donated embryos to couples wanting kids.

“We knew basic information [about the genetic parents] such as height and weight, but we weren’t using that [as criteria] how we were going to choose,” said Rachel, a 34-year-old stay-at-home mom near Portland, Oregon.

But they were more interested in, as Rachel put it, “How long have {the embryos} been waiting — which ones were waiting for parents to come and get them?”

“When we went into this process, we wanted to find the embryos that were overlooked or most unwanted,” Rachel said. “We were looking for embryos that needed a home because they had been overlooked.”

The process is sometimes referred to as “embryo adoption”, and is a recent phenomenon within the Evangelical Christian community in the Unites States.

“The idea of giving birth to your adopted child was fantastic to me,” said Rachel.

Philip would have been five years old when the embryos were first frozen, to put their age into perspective.

"There is something mind-boggling about it," Philip told CNN.

Building and construction emissions and energy use reaches record levels

Despite improvements in energy efficiency, greenhouse pollution levels from the building and construction sector reached an all-time high in 2021.

A new report on the building and construction sector by the United Nations Environment Programme released for COP27 found energy demand in buildings – for heating, cooling, lighting and equipment – increased by 4% from 2020 levels. As a result, the sector’s emissions increased 5% compared to 2020.

While the increase partly reflects a re-bound in building and construction activities after the pandemic, energy and emissions levels were also above 2019 levels.

This is significant because the sector accounts for around a third of total energy demand, the report says.

The UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres told the opening forum of COP27 that the future of the planet is in our hands. “…and the clock is ticking. We are in the fight of our lives. And we are losing. Greenhouse gas emissions keep growing. Global temperatures keep rising. And our planet is fast approaching tipping points that will make climate chaos irreversible.

“We are on a highway to climate hell with our foot still on the accelerator. “

With the release of the report, UNEP executive director, Inger Andersen added: “If we do not rapidly cut emissions in line with the Paris Agreement, we will be in deeper trouble.”

The UNEP report argues investments in energy efficiency must be sustained in the face of growing crises – such as the war in Ukraine and rising energy and living costs – to help with reducing energy demand, avoiding greenhouse gas pollution and reducing energy cost volatility.

“The solution may lie in governments directing relief towards low and zero-carbon building investment activities through financial and non-financial incentives,” Andersen says.

Also critical to reducing the sector’s emissions are including buildings in climate pledges under the Paris Agreement – known as Nationally Determined Contributions – and mandatory building energy codes.

The report’s recommendations include: building coalitions of stakeholders in support of sustainable buildings, governments introducing mandatory building energy codes and government policies, increasing investment in energy efficiency and commitments from industry.

This article was originally published on Cosmos Magazine and was written by Petra Stock.

Image: Getty Images

Mum’s clever hack helps dry your dishes in record time

For many people, the ultimate kitchen pet peeve is when you open your dishwasher after its cycle has finished and while your dishes may be clean, they are still sopping wet.

Rather than running the appliance through another drying cycle, one clever mum has discovered how to dry your dishes in five minutes flat.

Known online for her cleaning hacks and recipes, Babs shared a video to her Instagram to share her savvy hack.

"Has this ever happened to you? You're ready to unload the dishwasher, and guess what!? Everything is still wet," says Babs.

"Don't hand dry - do this instead."

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Babs (@brunchwithbabs)

She explains, "Take a terry cloth dish towel, open the door, lay it right over. Record-busting droughts are uncovering long-lost relics

As much of the Northern Hemisphere experiences record-breaking droughts, the drying up of lakes, rivers and other bodies of water has exposed more than just dirt and debris.

In Spain, a prehistoric circle of stones dubbed “Spanish Stonehenge” has emerged in a drying dam in the central province of Caceres. Since it was first discovered in 1926 and was subsequently covered by floodwaters, the stones have only been visible four times.

Elsewhere in Europe, 20 German WWII warships have been exposed, sunken in the Danube River near Serbia’s river port town of Prahovo.

Twenty Nazi warships emerged as the Danue River continues to dry up. First local monkeypox case recorded in NSW

The first case of locally-acquired monkeypox has been recorded in New South Wales, with authorities confirming that 42 people have been infected with the virus to date.

Although most contracted monkeypox overseas, two people were infected in other parts of Australia.

The announcement, made by NSW Health on Sunday, comes as a first for NSW a week after the JYNNEOS vaccination program was launched for those most at risk from the virus.

“NSW Health is urging the community, particularly gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM), to continue to be vigilant for the symptoms of monkeypox following local transmission of the virus in NSW,” NSW Health said.

Symptoms - which include a rash or lesions around the genital area, headache, body aches and fever - commonly appear between seven to 14 days after prolonged skin-to-skin contact with an infected person.

Illness generally lasts for two to four weeks, with most experiencing mild symptoms that can be lessened with regular over-the-counter pain medicines and oral fluids and monitored by their GP, according to NSW Health. For those with severe illness, antiviral medications are also available.

“It is important that people with these symptoms avoid close contact with others, including sexual activity, as condoms are not effective at preventing the transmission of monkeypox,” NSW Health Executive Director of Health Protection Richard Broome said in a statement.

NSW Health also warns that monkeypox can also be transmitted by respiratory droplets during the initial infectious period and from contact with contaminated clothing, linen and other items.

The news comes after Victorian authorities reported monkeypox was spreading in Melbourne last week, which was the first widespread example of local transmission in Australia since the global outbreak began.

Prior to the 2022 outbreak, cases of monkeypox have mostly been reported in Central and Western African countries, with the first human case reported in the Democratic Republic of Congo in 1970.

According to the CDC, 41,358 confirmed cases of monkeypox have been recorded as of publication, with 40,971 reported in locations without any historical cases of the virus, with a total of 89 in Australia and four in New Zealand.

Image: Getty Images

Record listing of Kenny G's former waterfront estate

The sprawling Washington estate formerly belonging to saxophonist Kenny G has hit the market for an eye-watering $US 85 million ($AU 121 or $NZ 134 million) - claiming the title of most expensive listing in the greater Seattle area.

Sitting on four acres, the 1100-square metre mansion was designed by celebrity architect Richard Landry and features a “very European feel to the exterior” of sandstone and glass, according to listing agent Anna Riley.

“It’s the premier address we have in Washington,” Ms Riley said.

“Most properties in Hunts Point are 1 acre. This one is 4.3 acres on Lake Washington, a beautiful fresh-water lake. It’s a really rare, world-class property.”

The property also boasts plenty of celebrity-worthy amenities, including a pool, a tennis court, a four-bedroom staff house, a pool cabana with changing rooms and showers, and a dock big enough to house a 150-foot yacht, a seaplane and jet skis.

“It has an unrivalled dock. It’s almost like having your own marina,” Ms Riley said.

Inside the home, you’ll find high ceilings with custom mouldings, a wood-panelled office, and a two-storey formal dining room that features 24-carat gold leaf ceiling details painted by hand and a hand-carved fireplace mantle.

The home also features a saltwater fish tank and wet bar in the recreation room, and a marble fireplace and private balcony in the upstairs primary suite.

As for views and water access, the home has nearly 100 metres of waterfront and access to a sandy beach, with views extending beyond the gardens and water features to the mountains and lake.

“One of the coolest things about the property is that it has an outdoor stage and two really grand lawns,” Ms. Riley said. “You could do epic entertaining here.”

“It’s an amazing property for doing charitable events and large-scale entertaining,” she added.

The Careless Whisper crooner reportedly sold the home to Bruce and Jolene McCraw in 1999, four years after it was built.

Images: @kennyg (Instagram) / Mansion Global

Record coral cover doesn’t necessarily mean the Great Barrier Reef is in good health (despite what you may have heard)

In what seems like excellent news, coral cover in parts of the Great Barrier Reef is at a record high, according to new data from the Australian Institute of Marine Science. But this doesn’t necessarily mean our beloved reef is in good health.

In the north of the reef, coral cover usually fluctuates between 20% and 30%. Currently, it’s at 36%, the highest level recorded since monitoring began more than three decades ago.

This level of coral cover comes hot off the back of a disturbing decade that saw the reef endure six mass coral bleaching events, four severe tropical cyclones, active outbreaks of crown-of-thorns starfish, and water quality impacts following floods. So what’s going on?

High coral cover findings can be deceptive because they can result from only a few dominant species that grow rapidly after disturbance (such as mass bleaching). These same corals, however, are extremely susceptible to disturbance and are likely to die out within a few years.

The data are robust

The Great Barrier Reef spans 2,300 kilometres, comprising more than 3,000 individual reefs. It is an exceptionally diverse ecosystem that features more than 12,000 animal species, plus many thousand more species of plankton and marine flora.

The reef has been teetering on the edge of receiving an “in-danger” listing from the World Heritage Committee. And it was recently described in the State of the Environment Report as being in a poor and deteriorating state.

To protect the Great Barrier Reef, we need to routinely monitor and report on its condition. The Australian Institute of Marine Science’s long-term monitoring program has been collating and delivering this information since 1985.

Its approach involves surveying a selection of reefs that represent different habitat types (inshore, midshelf, offshore) and management zones. The latest report provides a robust and valuable synopsis of how coral cover has changed at 87 reefs across three sectors (north, central and south) over the past 36 years.

The results

Overall, the long-term monitoring team found coral cover has increased on most reefs. The level of coral cover on reefs near Cape Grenville and Princess Charlotte Bay in the northern sector has bounced back from bleaching, with two reefs having more than 75% cover.

In the central sector, where coral cover has historically been lower than in the north and south, coral cover is now at a region-wide high, at 33%.

The southern sector has a dynamic coral cover record. In the late 1980s coral cover surpassed 40%, before dropping to a region-wide low of 12% in 2011 after Cyclone Hamish.

The region is currently experiencing outbreaks of crown-of-thorns starfish. And yet, coral cover in this area is still relatively high at 34%.

Based on this robust data set, which shows increases in coral cover indicative of region-wide recovery, things must be looking up for the Great Barrier Reef – right?

Are we being catfished by coral cover?

In the Australian Institute of Marine Science’s report, reef recovery relates solely to an increase in coral cover, so let’s unpack this term.

Coral cover is a broad proxy metric that indicates habitat condition. It’s relatively easy data to collect and report on, and is the most widely used monitoring metric on coral reefs.

The finding of high coral cover may signify a reef in good condition, and an increase in coral cover after disturbance may signify a recovering reef.

But in this instance, it’s more likely the reef is being dominated by only few species, as the report states that branching and plating Acropora species have driven the recovery of coral cover.

Acropora coral are renowned for a “boom and bust” life cycle. After disturbances such as a cyclone, Acropora species function as pioneers. They quickly recruit and colonise bare space, and the laterally growing plate-like species can rapidly cover large areas.

Fast-growing Acropora corals tend to dominate during the early phase of recovery after disturbances such as the recent series of mass bleaching events. However, these same corals are often susceptible to wave damage, disease or coral bleaching and tend to go bust within a few years.

Inferring that a reef has recovered by a person being towed behind a boat to obtain a rapid visual estimate of coral cover is like flying in a helicopter and saying a bushfire-hit forest has recovered because the canopy has grown back.

It provides no information about diversity, or the abundance and health of other animals and plants that live in and among the trees, or coral.

Cautious optimism

My study, published last year, examined 44 years of coral distribution records around Jiigurru, Lizard Island, at the northern end of the Great Barrier Reef.

It suggested that 28 of 368 species of hard coral recorded at that location haven’t been seen for at least a decade, and are at risk of local extinction.

Lizard Island is one location where coral cover has rapidly increased since the devastating 2016-17 bleaching event. Yet, there is still a real risk local extinctions of coral species have occurred.

While there’s no data to prove or disprove it, it’s also probable that extinctions or local declines of coral-affiliated marine life, such as coral-eating fishes, crustaceans and molluscs have also occurred.

Without more information at the level of individual species, it is impossible to understand how much of the Great Barrier Reef has been lost, or recovered, since the last mass bleaching event.

Based on the coral cover data, it’s tempting to be optimistic. But given more frequent and severe heatwaves and cyclones are predicted in the future, it’s wise to be cautious about the reef’s perceived recovery or resilience.

This article originally appeared on The Conversation.

Image: Shutterstock

Why the penguins are out in record-breaking numbers

Australia’s Phillip Island, home to the world’s smallest penguins, has been the site of a record-breaking “penguin parade”, with over 5,200 birds crossing the beach in a single night.

Every day at dusk, some of these penguins make the trip to their nesting grounds on-shore after hunting for fish, squid, kill and small crustaceans in the ocean in an event that regularly draws large numbers of tourists.

“Penguin viewing has occurred at the same location for over 50 years and the birds have been habituated to nightly activity over time,” Paula Wasiak, a Phillip Island Nature Parks field researcher, told Live Science.

On May 3, 5,219 of the 40-centimetre-tall penguins stormed the beach toward their burrows in less than an hour.

“We couldn’t believe our eyes when more than 5,000 penguins came out of the water in less than an hour,” Wasiak said in a statement.

The penguin extravaganza comes just a week after the record for the island’s largest penguin parade was broken, when 4,592 penguins came ashore all at one on April 29 according to Wasiak.

Overall, May has seen multiple parades with surprisingly high numbers, with 3,000 to 5,000 birds marching each night.

“It’s been a penguin party night after night, which is unusual for this time of year, let alone in record numbers like we are seeing now,” Wasiak said.

Historically, the larger parades tend to take place in November and December during peak breeding season, according to the Penguin Foundation.

As for why they’re coming together in such large numbers lately, it might be to do with this year’s La Niña event.

Little penguins primarily eat small fish, such as anchovies, which can only live in a narrow temperature range, according to Wasiak.

“It suggests that during La Niña years, the ocean conditions around Phillip Island are often ideal for an abundant supply of fish/food close to shore,” she told Live Science.

But, Wasiak said the turnout could also be related to another phenomenon called the “autumn breeding attempt”, where older penguins attempt to breed outside of mating season and results in more penguins heading out to forage, or improvements in the island’s habitat.

“One of the main areas we’re seeing an increase in penguin attendance is to the east of the colony. In the past, poor habitat erosion in this area meant penguins had difficulty accessing and nesting there,” she explained.

“A lot of work has gone into improving dune structure, creating penguin pathways and restoring habitat, which is now paying off.”

If you can’t make it to the island for the nightly parades, you can also watch livestreams on Facebook and YouTube.

Image: Phillip Island Nature Parks

Warhol’s bullet-riddled Marilyn Monroe sets new record

Andy Warhol’s iconic 1964 portrait of Marilyn Monroe has sold at a New York auction house for a record-setting $195 million.

The sale of the painting, called Shot Sage Blue Marilyn, is now the most expensive work by a 20th-century artist ever to be sold at auction.

The image depicts a press photo from Monroe’s 1953 film Niagara in Warhol’s signature “pop-art” style, with the image being repeatedly used by the artist in his work until his death in 1987.

It derives from his Shot Marilyn portrait series, which Warhol produced after an incident at his downtown studio when he prompted a collaborator, Dorothy Podber, to shoot into a stack of canvases.

The result for this 1964 work almost doubled the artist's previous auction record of $105.4 million, which was set in 2013 when his 1963 canvas Silver Car Crash (Double Disaster) sold at Sotheby’s.

With the sale, Christie’s auction house also rode a double-pronged pop culture wave of renewed interest in both Warhol and Monroe.

Streaming giant Netflix has released separate documentary series on both the actress and the artist, with both icons making a resurgence in the pop culture zeitgeist.

Not only did Shot Sage Blue Marilyn bring a new artist record for Warhol, it has also become one of the most expensive works of art ever to sold at auction, surpassing Pablo Picasso’s Les Femmes d’Alger (“Version O”) as the second high-selling work to hit the auction block.

That painting sold at Christie’s for $179 million in 2015, with the most expensive work to ever sell at auction being Leonardo da Vinci’s Salvator Mundi which sold for $450 million.

Pink Floyd reunite to record Ukraine protest song

For the first time in 28 years, legendary rock band Pink Floyd have reunited to collaborate for an incredible cause.

Band members David Gilmour, Nick Mason and Guy Pratt have recorded a protest song against the war in Ukraine titled Hey Hey, Rise Up!

The song is built around a spine-tingling refrain from Ukrainian singer Andriy Khlyvnyuk of the band Boombox.

David Gilmour said the song is a show of “anger at a superpower invading a peaceful nation”.

But the track can also be seen as a morale booster for the people of Ukraine, and a call “for peace”.

Work on the haunting song began when Gilmour saw Khlyvnyuk's Instagram feed, with a video of the singer in Kyiv's Sofiyskaya Square, fully armed and ready to fight the Russian invasion.

Facing the camera, the Ukrainian performer sang The Red Viburnum In The Meadow, a protest song written during the first world war, which has become a rallying cry in Ukraine over the last six weeks.
<blockquote class="instagram-media" style="background: #FFF;
