Sam Neill moved to tears by simple question

Sam Neill has unexpectedly broken down in tears over one question posed to him by a university student.

The Jurassic Park actor was the surprise guest during the premiere of ABC's new series, The Assembly, based off the UK show which sees high-profile figures being interviewed by a class of university students who are all autistic.

The students can ask whatever they want, and one student, Abby brought the actor to tears with her question.

“What’s the best lesson you learned from your parents?” she asked.

“Ooft, wow. That’s a really interesting question … A really, really interesting question,” Neill replied, before pausing as he began tearing up.

“I don’t know why that question has moved me so much, but it has.”

The actor then went on to explain that his parents were “of the generation that went through a lot” – including the Great Depression and World War One, in which his maternal grandfather was killed – leaving both his parents “very stoic”.

“And I’d done a year of university and I’d done bugger all. I was acting in plays and trying to find a girlfriend, you know … so it came to exam time and I realised I’d done almost no work,” Neill recalled.

“It got me very anxious. Anyway, I got home and Mum said, ‘How are you, darling?’ and I said, ‘I think I’m having a breakdown, I’ve got exams in a couple of weeks …’ and she just looked at me and said, ‘Well, you’re just going to have to pull yourself together’.”

He continued: “And I think that’s the best lesson I learned from her. Sometimes you just have to pull yourself together. It’s a tough lesson, but a good one – and thank you for that question."

Elsewhere during the interview, he also spoke candidly about his recent blood cancer battle, and while he is in remission after a year of chemotherapy, he still requires monthly treatments which he'll have to do for the rest of his life.

One student asked him, "what motivated you to keep going, and did you have anyone supporting you through it?”

He admitted that while it had been a "pretty brutal" process, he is grateful for all the treatments keeping him alive "and living is much better than the other thing.”

Images: ABC

Sam Neill reveals his pillar of strength during cancer battle

Anyone facing a major health battle will always cherish the support they receive from loved ones during tough times, and Sam Neill couldn't be more grateful for his support system.

In 2022, the Jurassic Park star was diagnosed with stage-three blood cancer and had to undergo treatment.

Fortunately, he is still in remission, and during a recent interview on the Big Talk Show podcast, he told host Jess Rowe that it was fellow actor and friend Bryan Brown who was a pillar of strength for him during his health battle.

"I would be completely lost without friends and old friends are even more precious because they have been through the tough times," Neill said.

“I had a spell in hospital and Bryan came in every day. Every day. I thought: ‘That’s a real friend’.

“He didn’t have anything to say, but he came in and kept me company.”

He added that despite the pair having very little in common, their friendship has lasted for more than 40 years.

"Bryan and I have been friends since 1980, I think it is," he said.

“I love him dearly, he’s a great family man [and] immensely loyal,” he added.

Sam found out he had stage-three blood cancer in 2022 during his first trip back to New Zealand following the Covid lockdowns, that made it almost impossible for him to see his family.

He had to undergo chemotherapy for three or four months, which he said was "brutal".

In another interview with Today, he also credited his work for keeping him busy and helping him survive his battle with cancer.

"I like working and when I was diagnosed, I didn't have any work to do, so I wrote a book and that saved my life because I was pretty down and I got up in the morning and I would write and write and write and that was good fun," he said at the time.

Image: Susanna Saez/EPA-EFE/ Shutterstock Editorial

"Let's not worry too much": Sam Neill's devastating diagnosis

Sam Neill has revealed he has been battling blood cancer, but has remained in remission for the last eight months.

The 75-year-old actor, who is most known for his work in the Jurassic Park franchise, told The Guardian he had angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma, or stage III blood cancer, and underwent chemotherapy.

He will remain on chemo drugs for the rest of his life, but is currently cancer free.

“I’m not off the hook as such, but there’s no cancer in my body,” Neill told the publication.

Despite being in remission, the actor has battled some "dark moments" since his diagnosis.

“I can’t pretend that the last year hasn’t had its dark moments,” Neill added in the interview.

“But those dark moments throw the light into sharp relief, you know, and have made me grateful for every day and immensely grateful for all my friends. Just pleased to be alive.”

Neill has detailed his journey with cancer in his upcoming memoirs, which he began writing while undergoing treatment.

He shared a video to Instagram to give his fans an update on his health after news of his diagnosis broke, and revealed more about his book.

He said, “I’m alive and kicking and I’m going to work and I’m very happy to be going back to work."

“We start filming in seven days’ time. I’m doing a thing called Apples Never Fall [with] Annette Bening and a really wonderful cast. Here I am, and I wish the headline wasn’t that thing because the main thing is that I have written this book, it’s called Did I Ever Tell You This?. And it does mention cancer because that’s the sort of context in which I wrote it. "

“But I didn’t really mean to write a book, I needed something to do while I was undergoing treatment, and I am used to going to work and I suddenly couldn’t go to work. So that’s why I wrote the book, and I have to say there’s been great response to it. People seem to love it, which is great."

“I was very nervous, obviously as a first time author. Anyway, I think it’s fun. We subtitled it Movies, Life, Love and Other Catastrophes. So it gives you an idea of all the crazy things that have happened to me."

“So I hope you enjoy it, and let’s not worry too much about ‘all that’ because I’m fine. OK!”

When speaking to The Guardian about his upcoming memoir, Neill revealed that the opening chapter of his book contained the line, “The thing is, I’m crook. Possibly dying. I may have to speed this up.”

Ten gardening tips for beginners

Wondering how to start a garden? You can find your confidence to do it with these expert gardening tips.

Site it right

Starting a garden is pretty much all about location. Place your garden in a part of your yard where you'll see it regularly because if it’s out of sight, it’ll be out of mind. This way, you'll be much more likely to spend time in it.

Follow the sun

Misjudging sunlight is a common pitfall when you're first learning to garden. Pay attention to how sunlight plays through your yard before choosing a spot for your garden. Most edible plants, including many vegetables, herbs, and fruits, need at least six hours of sun in order to thrive.

Stay close to water

One of the best gardening tips you'll ever get is to plan your new garden near a water source. Make sure you can run a hose to your garden site, so you don't have to carry water to it each time your plants get thirsty. The best way to tell if plants need watering is to push a finger an inch down into the soil (that's about one knuckle deep). If it's dry, it's time to water.

Start with great soil

When starting a garden, one of the top pieces of advice is to invest in soil which is nutrient-rich and well-drained. You can buy garden soil from hardware stores and mix this in with existing soil to make it more nutrient- dense for your plants.

Consider containers

When space is at a premium, look to containers. You can grow many plants in pots, including vegetables, herbs, flowers, fruit trees, berries, and shrubs. When gardening in containers, use a pot that's large enough for the plant it's hosting, and fill it with some potting mix. This will help the plants to thrive and it will also protect against over and under watering.

Choose the right plants

It's important to select plants which match your growing conditions. This means putting sun-loving plants into a sunny spot, choosing heat-tolerant plants in warm climates, and giving ground-gobbling vines like pumpkins and melons ample elbow room - or a trellis to climb up. Do your homework and pick varieties which will grow well where you live and in the space you have.

Discover your zone

Knowing your ‘hardiness zone’ can help you choose the best plants. Simply put, it describes the coldest place a plant can grow. The higher the zone number, the warmer the climate. So, if a plant is ‘hardy to zone 4’ and you garden in zone 5, that plant will survive in your yard. If, however, you're in zone 3, it's too cold to grow that particular plant.

Learn your frost dates

Planting too early or late in the season can spell disaster for your garden. You need to know the last average spring frost date for your area so you don't accidentally kill plants by putting them out prematurely. It's also good to know your first average fall frost date so you can get your plants harvested or moved indoors before late-season cold damages them.

Add some mulch

Apply a layer of mulch that's two to three inches deep around each plant. This will help reduce weeds by blocking out the sun, and reduce moisture loss through evaporation, so you have to water less. Or, you can put down straw, shredded leaves, pine straw or some other locally available material.

Feed plants regularly

We've already talked about the importance of starting with great soil, but that soil works best in concert with regular boosts of high-quality nutrition for your plants. In other words, amazing soil + top-notch plant food = super garden success!

So, a month after planting, begin feeding your garden with some plant food you’re your local store and be sure to follow label directions.

Photos: Getty Images

The parents of a child who plunged to her death after suffering a 46-metre fall from a cruise ship window are suing for millions as they release the chilling picture of where she died.

The toddler, Chloe Wiegand was in the hands of her grandad near to a window when she slipped.

However, her heart-stricken family insist the blame lies with the “negligent” cruise line, which they are reportedly launching legal action against.

The heartbreaking photograph taken of the tent covering the part of the deck that Alan and Kimberly Schultz’s baby girl died, was taken by a criminal investigator and is now being used in a negligence suit.

They are reportedly accusing Royal Caribbean of breaching safety protocols and standards.

The snap shows the view which Chloe’s grandad Salvatore “Sam” Anello had been balancing Chloe when he slipped and fell while the ship was docked in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

It also shows a partial space between the wooden railing that Mr Anello held his granddaughter and a large, glass window that could be completely opened.

Mr Anello is facing up to six years behind bars after he was charged with criminal neglect – however Chloe’s parents are adamant the blame lies in the hands of the cruise ship.

Mr and Mrs Schultz are sticking by their daughter’s grandfather, insisting nothing is worse than “what has already happened”.

The family have reportedly filed a suit against Royal Caribbean to figure out why the 11th storey window was allegedly left open.

It is reported the family will receive “unlimited” damages for “pain and mental suffering” if their claim is successful, as Chloe died on American soil and not in the high seas.

The grieving family’s lawyer say it will be impossible to “put a figure” on their grief however, saying “four simple words – caution these windows open – and we wouldn’t be talking about his.

“A sticker, a decal with the Royal Caribbean logo, anything, and Chloe is still with us.”

The family will claim in court that little Chloe was being “closely supervised” by her granddad at the time of her death.

They will further maintain Mr Anello was “unaware” one of the large panes of glass surrounding the ship’s 11th floor had been slid open when he carried his granddaughter over to the railings.

The case alleges the window was the only one open “among dozens” and there was no clear indication that it had been opened.

The lawsuit also claims there was a 46 cm gap between the wooden railing and the open window, which made it even more difficult for a horrified Mr Anello to reach over and grasp for his toddler as she plunged to her death.

They also allege that Mr Anello being colourblind made hard for him to differentiate between the glass and the open window.

Chloe’s family have insisted the toddler liked to bang on glass, just as she did when at her brother’s hockey games – which is why her grandad had sat her on the wooden railing.

In November, it was reported there is video evidence that supports the grieving family’s claim that Mr Anello was unaware the window was open – a potential bombshell for both the case against her distraught grandad and the family’s Royal Caribbean suit.

Royal Caribbean has refused to comment further but described Chloe’s death as a “tragic incident”.
