Gold medallist sleeps in Paris park to protest "disappointing" Olympic village conditions

A gold medallist has been spotted sleeping in a Paris park in protest of the conditions in the Olympic village.

Italian swimmer Thomas Ceccon was captured sleeping atop a white towel in a park located inside the Olympic village by Saudi rower Husein Alireza.

Alireza posted the photo to Instagram with the caption, "Rest today, conquer tomorrow."

The Italian swimmer, who won gold in the 100m backstroke, had already complained publicly about the accommodations in the Olympic Village, after he failed to reach the 200m backstroke final on Wednesday.

Since the commencement of the Paris Games, many athletes have spoken out about the conditions in the Olympic village, saying the beds are uncomfortable, the rooms are poorly air conditioned and the food is poor quality.

“There is no air-conditioning in the village, it’s hot, the food is bad,” Ceccon said, according to The Sun.

“Many athletes move for this reason: it’s not an alibi or an excuse, it’s the reality of what perhaps not everybody knows."

“I’m disappointed that I didn’t make the final, but I was too tired. It’s hard to sleep both at night and in the afternoon. Here, I really struggle between the heat and the noise.”

Andy Anson, the chief of the British Olympic Association, also voiced concerns about how the quality of the village is affecting athletes, telling The Times of London, “There are not enough of certain foods: eggs, chicken, certain carbohydrates.”

“And then there is the quality of the food, with raw meat being served to athletes.”

A number of athletes, including the entire US women’s tennis team (with the exception of Coco Gauff) have left the village and searched for alternate accommodation for the duration of the Games.

‘Teacher’s Pet’ journalist takes stand in Chris Dawson trial

The journalist whose podcast, The Teacher’s Pet, brought global attention to Lynette Dawson’s disappearance has taken the stand in Chris Dawson’s murder trial, telling the court he wasn’t out to “condemn” Mr Dawson.

Hedley Thomas, a journalist with The Australian, is one of the final witnesses the prosecution will call in the Supreme Court trial, during which Mr Dawson has denied killing his wife Lynette 40 years ago, per news.com.au.

Ms Dawson’s disappearance from her home on Sydney’s northern beaches in January, 1982, was the subject of investigation in Mr Thomas’ podcast, which was downloaded 60 million times internationally.

Mr Thomas began investigating the case in 2017 and spoke with Ms Dawson’s family about seeking “justice”.

“Justice for Lyn meant to you, didn’t it, the prosecution of Christoper Dawson?” Pauline David, Mr Dawson’s barrister, asked Mr Thomas on Monday.

“Yes, I think that that is a fair call, yes,” Mr Thomas answered.

Under Ms David’s questioning, Mr Thomas said he hadn’t met Mr Dawson but had formed an opinion of him after interviewing those close to the case and reading material from the two inquests into Ms Dawson’s disappearance.

“I don’t think you need to meet someone to form a view about them,” Mr Thomas said, after the court was told of an interview Mr Thomas had with 60 Minutes where he described Mr Dawson as “despicable”, “severely narcissistic” and “dangerous”.

“People can form views about tyrants, for argument’s sake, without ever having met them, study materials, talk to people and form a view.
“At that stage it was my view and it hasn’t changed.”

However, Mr Thomas denied that the podcast amounted to an attempt to “incite evidence” against Mr Dawson, saying he would have broadcasted evidence that contradicted his theory that Mr Dawson murdered his wife.

“There was no doubt from the outset of the podcast it was going to be an exercise in condemning Christopher Dawson?” Ms David asked.

“No, I disagree,” Mr Thomas said.

“If I had uncovered or received information from anybody that disrupted, changed the narrative, that disputed the findings by coroners or anyone, that would have become a very significant part of the podcast.”

As the case draws to a close, the court heard on Monday that Mr Thomas would be one of the final witnesses called by the prosecution, which argues that Ms Dawson was killed on or about January 8, 1982.

Mr Dawson argues that on the morning of January 9, 1982, he drove Ms Dawson to a Mona Vale bus stop so she could go shopping, and that she later failed to meet him at the Northbridge baths, where he worked as a part-time lifeguard.

According to Mr Dawson, Ms Dawson called him from the baths, telling him she needed time away.

His version of events were said to be corroborated by a woman - known for legal reasons as KB - who worked at the baths and was interviewed by former detective Damian Loone in March 2001.

Mr Loone didn’t take a statement from her, and told the court that he didn’t turn a blind eye to evidence that supported Mr Dawson’s account.

He disagreed that KB told him she remembered the phone call.

“I want to suggest your failure to take a statement from (KB) was consistent with your approach to the investigation, which was that if inquiries supported Christopher Dawson you would not take a statement,” Ms David said.

“That’s incorrect,” Mr Loone replied

The trial continues under Justice Ian Harrison.

Image: Nine

"It's a travesty": Meghan Markle’s dad rushed to hospital

Thomas Markle, Meghan Markle’s father, has reportedly suffered a stroke.

A photo has emerged of the 77-year-old being treated by paramedics and wearing an oxygen mask, with TMZ reporting that he suffered a medical incident at his home in Tijuana, Mexico, on May 24.

According to the publication, Thomas was transferred to a nearby hospital in Chula Vista, California, approximately seven hours away from Harry and Meghan’s Montecito home.

It’s reported that Thomas was unable to speak and was asked to write down his symptoms.

Shortly after the news broke, Meghan’s half-sister Samantha Markle issued a statement.

“My father is recovering in hospital. We ask for privacy for the family, for his health and wellbeing. He just needs peace and rest. Goodspeed,” she told the Daily Mail.

“We are praying. He just needs some rest. It’s a travesty how much he’s been tortured and how much he’s had to go through thanks to my sister’s disregard the past few years. That is unforgivable.”

In recent years, Thomas has suffered ailing health and was notably treated for a heart attack ahead of Meghan’s marriage to Prince Harry in 2018 and was unable to attend the wedding due to ill health.

It was around that time that the relationship between Meghan and Thomas broke down.

“The last time we spoke - actually, we didn’t speak, we actually texted each other - I was laying in a hospital bed after having a heart attack,” he told Good Morning Britain in 2021.

“I had to tell them that I couldn’t come to the wedding.

“At that point, we pretty much said goodbye.”

Thomas also claimed Harry chastised him as he lay in a hospital bed after undergoing surgery, who said if he had listened to the royal that “this wouldn’t have happened to you”.

“And me, laying in a hospital bed after I’ve had a procedure and getting a stent put here and a stent put here, felt that that was kind of snotty, so I hung up on him,” Thomas claimed. “And that’s the last conversation we ever had.”

Image: Fox News

Thomas Markle slams Meghan and Harry’s memorial absence

Thomas Markle has hit out at his daughter, Meghan, and son-in-law Prince Harry, for their “unforgivable” absence from Prince Philip’s memorial service.

Mr Markle - who has never met Prince Harry or seen his daughter since before her 2018 wedding - said their decision not to fly to the UK to attend the service was “a slap in the face for the Queen”.

“Attending and giving respect and giving God’s grace to Prince Philip for a lifetime of service was very important to the Queen, and for them not to show up was a slap in the face to the Queen,” he fumed in a video posted to his YouTube channel.

“It was unforgivable. The British people won’t forgive them for that, and they shouldn’t.

“I don’t know what the reason was, but there’s no excuse at all. Unseen texts claim Meghan Markle knew controversial letter would leak

As Meghan Markle's court battle with a British publisher continues, a major bombshell has been dropped about the authenticity of the Duchess' claims.

In the lengthy legal battle, Meghan Markle claims that Associated Newspapers misused Meghan's private information when they published a letter she sent to her father before her wedding to Prince Harry in 2018.

But now, Meghan's former private secretary Jason Knauf claims she was "happy for the public to read" the letter, and altered her language in the correspondence to "pull at the heartstrings" of the public.

The court heard that the duchess had written, “Given I’ve only ever called him ‘daddy’ it may make sense to open as such, despite him being less than paternal, and in the unfortunate event that it leaked it would pull at the heartstrings.”

“Obviously everything I have drafted is with the understanding that it could be leaked, so I have been meticulous in my word choice.”

The duchess later texted Knauf again, saying: “Honestly Jason, I feel fantastic."

“Cathartic and real and honest and factual. And if he leaks it then that’s on his conscience."

“And at least the world will know the truth, words I could never voice.”

As these revelations came to light, lawyers for Associated Newspapers are hoping to overturn the original decision of the high court by arguing the letter was crafted with the "possibility of public consumption" in mind.

The letter was sent to Meghan's father Thomas after he refused to walk her down the aisle at the high-profile royal wedding, and the letter was subsequently sold by Thomas to the UK newspaper.

Thomas Markle Jr pens apology letter to sister Meghan

Thomas Markle Jr opened up about his relationship with estranged half-sister Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, on Big Brother VIP on Monday night, with the support of fellow housemate and former Survivor favourite Luke Toki.

On Monday night’s episode, Toki, who’s been developing a friendship with Markle, was called into the diary room and asked to read the infamous letter Markle wrote to Prince Harry. In the letter, Markle urged Harry to reconsider his marriage, and called the pair’s marriage “the biggest mistake in royal wedding history”.

Toki was asked for his thoughts on the letter, and he was incredibly supportive of his newfound friend, saying, “He’s so upset, he’s seen his sister being given so many opportunities. Some people like to climb the corporate ladder and not look back. I understand - there are two sides to every tale.

“But from everything I know - I like Tom, and I think he loves his sister. As brothers and sisters we give each other s**t and we fight and get back together. At the end of the day family is family.

“Tom really wants to reconnect with his sister - he loves his sister,” Toki said while tearing up and adding, “I’m actually getting quite emotional over this - sorry.” Asked by Big Brother if this struck a chord with him, Toki replied, “A little bit… A little bit… I haven’t spoken to my sister for the last two or three years, I just started speaking to her again.

"Family is family and deep down the love is always going to be there, it doesn’t matter what happens.”

Toki was then asked to convince Markle to write an apology to Meghan, which Markle agreed to do. Asked what it was like growing up with Meghan, Markle said, “It was fun. There was a whole lot of love growing up. Her first nickname as a child was ‘flower' because her bedroom she had these decorative flowers over her crib, so when she woke up that’s the first thing she would see.”

“She’s my sister and she’s my blood and I love the hell out of her.”

After taking some time to write the letter, Markle read it aloud. He had written, ”Dear Meghan and Harry, the first thing I want to say to you two is that I’m sorry from the bottom of my heart for the awful, mean letter I wrote to you prior to your wedding.

“I want both of you to know that it didn’t come from the real person I am, but came from the very dark, hurt part of my heart. I am not a mean person at all and I have more love inside me to give than anyone I know.

“The letter was definitely written from my feeling hurt and confused from your response that I was ‘distant family’ and that you ‘didn’t know those people’. I was hurt and confused because of the amazing bond and relationship we shared growing up together, and all I could do was put up a defensive wall to protect my heart.

“I know that the letter was immature and wrong and I truly regret it. When your relationship with Harry first became known to the public, I - along with all of our family - became public figures overnight - no more privacy.

“Let me tell you, It was very, very stressful to deal with it all alone with no help at all. A real nightmare and constant pressure, and I if I could turn back the clock and do it all over knowing what I know now. I would never have tried to communicate any of my feeling to the media. I feel like a complete ass after what I’ve done and I am truly sorry for that.

“Meg, if I could turn the clock back, I would tell you that I'm so, so proud of you and I'm truly happy for you and Harry and I love you. You’re my little sister, my family, and you always will be. Now you’ve found the love of your life and started a family of your own, I couldn’t be more proud.

“The last several years of my life I have grown and learned more about myself, and I must say what I did to you with that letter is quite possibly the biggest mistake of my life. I hope you and Harry can find it in your hearts to accept my sincere apology because this is the real Tom Markle. I truly love you guys. I wish you, Harry and Meghan, and Archie and Lili the happiest most loving life possible. Sincerely, your big brother, Tom.”

Following the exercise, Markle said it felt like a weight had been lifted off his shoulders, and that he felt indebted to Big Brother, who confirmed he would be sending the letter to the couple.

“I’ve grown exponentially since my stay here,” Markle added.

Image: Gilbert Carrasquillo/Getty Images

"We miss him terribly but we know his legacy lives on."

Sir Thomas shot to worldwide fame after raising more than $42 million for health services and charities in the UK and was even knighted by the Queen for his efforts.

Piers spoke about being contacted by Sir Tom on Twitter.

"It really touched me as it touched everybody in the country," Morgan continued.

"Did you ever imagine Hannah that you'd end up with your dad not just raising nearly £40million for the NHS but also being knighted having a number one pop record, being a GQ cover star, a man of the year, winning a Pride of Britain award... "Showed no concern": Thomas Markle slams Meghan in court

Meghan Markle's father Thomas Markle has slammed his royal daughter in court, claiming that a private letter Meghan sent him "signalled the end of our relationship".

The letter, which was written in 2018, is at the centre of a highly-followed court battle with the former Duchess of Sussex suing Associated Newspapers for breaching her privacy by publishing the letter.

Associated Newspapers is the publisher of Mail on Sunday, which is where the letter was first made public.

Thomas said that he felt like he had no choice to make parts of the letter public after reading an article written by People magazine with quotes from Meghan's friends.

One of the quotes in the article read: “After the wedding she wrote him a letter. She’s like, ‘Dad, I’m so heartbroken. I love you. I have one father. Please stop victimising me through the media so we can repair our relationship.’”

Thomas claims that this comment is a "total lie" and the letter wasn't an attempt to save their relationship but was a "criticism" instead.

“(The People quote) suggested to people that Meg had reached out to me with the letter, saying in the letter that she loved me and that she wanted to repair our relationship.

“That suggestion was false. The letter was not an attempt at a reconciliation. It was a criticism of me.

“The letter didn’t say she loved me. It did not even ask how I was. It showed no concern about the fact I had suffered a heart attack and asked no questions about my health.

“It actually signalled the end of our relationship, not a reconciliation.”

Thomas then spoke about how the People article hurt him and his reputation in the statement.

“(It) vilified me by making out that I was dishonest, exploitative, publicity-seeking, uncaring and cold-hearted, leaving a loyal and dutiful daughter devastated”.

He also said that he didn't release the whole letter "because I thought the letter as a whole made Meg look terrible", according to his statement.

Lawyers for the Duchess of Sussex said that the publication of the “intrinsically private, personal and sensitive” letter was a “triple-barrelled invasion of her privacy rights”.

“It (the letter) is a heartfelt plea from an anguished daughter to her father (the word ‘pain’ or ‘painful’ appears no fewer than five times), begging him to stop talking to the press.”

Anthony White QC, who is representing Associated Newspapers, has argued that Meghan penned the letter “to defend her against charges of being an uncaring or unloving daughter” and must have known “that her father might choose to disclose it”.

Meghan's lawyers have applied for a summary judgement to be handed down, which means that the case could be resolved without going to trial.

However, if the case goes ahead, both Thomas and Meghan could take to the stand as witnesses.

Thomas Markle could be called on to testify against Meghan

Estranged father Thomas Markle could be called on to testify at the high court against his daughter Meghan as part of her ongoing legal action against the Mail on Sunday.

Reports have emerged suggesting that the paper’s defence is reliant on Thomas’ account.

The Duchess of Sussex is currently suing the newspaper for breach of copyright, invasion of privacy and misuse of personal data after it published excerpts from a letter that she sent to Thomas about how he was treating her.

Mail on Sunday filed its 44-page long defence at the high court on Tuesday arguing that the Duchess and other royals rely on publicity about themselves and their lives to maintain the privileged positions they hold”. It also argues that Meghan could not “have a reasonable expectation of privacy that the contents of the letter were private and would remain so”.

“There is a huge and legitimate public interest in the royal family and the activities, conduct and standards of behavior of its members,” the filing said. “This extends not merely to their public conduct, but to their personal and family relationships because those are integral to the proper functioning of the monarchy.”

The paper is targeting all of Meghan’s claims, including where she says that she had not courted publicity for her relationship with her father. The paper has countered this saying that Meghan hasn’t denied authorising her friends to speak about the relationship for an article with US magazine People.

Mail on Sunday has dismissed the copyright claim by arguing that the letter was not an original literary work while also saying that Meghan and her team “briefed” the media against Thomas to obtain favourable coverage.

"The privacy allegation, which is being made by Meghan in this particular case, is that there was also an invasion of her privacy by the revelation of this letter and the information about their personal relationship," media lawyer Mark Stephens told the BBC.

"Effectively, Thomas Markle and therefore the Mail on Sunday's defence is that because it is alleged Meghan and her team were out briefing against Thomas Markle — he had a right of reply, he had a right to defend himself, he had a right to put the record straight and it's much less clear that she wins that cleanly or at all".

The legal proceedings are being funded by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex privately and any proceeds will be donated to an anti-bullying charity.

“The letter didn't seem loving”: Duchess Meghan’s father Thomas Markle speaks out

The Duchess of Sussex’s father, Thomas Markle said he did not intend to share a letter his daughter wrote to him, but did so because he felt “pressured”.

The 75-year-old’s decision to release the note has landed him straight in the centre of a legal battle between both Prince Harry and his wife, and the Mail on Sunday.

However, while he did not have any intention to release the contents of his daughter’s heartfelt letter, he said he wanted to defend himself after it was first mentioned publicly in the American magazine, People.

"I decided to release parts of the letter because of the article from Meghan's friends in People magazine. I have to defend myself,” he said.

"I only released parts of the letter because other parts were so painful. The letter didn't seem loving to me. I found it hurtful.

"There was no loving message in there, nothing asking about my health, nothing from her saying, 'Let's get together and heal our differences'."

People quoted a “friend” of the Duchess, who chose to remain unnamed, who said the royal felt that her father did not understand her desire for privacy.

Mr Markle had suggested the two should pose together for a press photo.

However, the retired lighting director argued he did not want a picture “for any other reason” than to be left alone.

"I don't want a picture for any other reason than if we show harmony then the press will back off,” he said.

"When I opened the letter I was hoping it was the olive branch I'd longed for.

"I was expecting something that would be a pathway to reconciliation. Instead it was deeply hurtful.

"I was so devastated I couldn't show it to anyone - and never would have, had it not been for the People magazine piece which meant I had to release portions to defend myself."

Last week, Prince Harry accused the tabloid press of a “ruthless campaign” against Duchess Meghan.

He added: “lost my mother and now I watch my wife falling victim to the same powerful forces."

He continued: "Though this action may not be the safe one, it is the right one.

"Because my deepest fear is history repeating itself. I've seen what happens when someone I love is commoditised to the point that they are no longer treated or seen as a real person."

This week, the Duchess of Sussex began legal proceedings against the Mail on Sunday, claiming it had breached copyright, infringed her privacy and breached the Data Protection Act by publishing her letter.

The Mail on Sunday released a statement saying it intends to defend itself "vigorously" if the case ends up in court.

Flight attendant’s devastating announcement on last ever flight

The world reacted with shock and fury when Thomas Cook collapsed, leaving thousands of travellers around the world stranded, but true heartbreak was felt by those who worked on the front line – the cabin crew.

As passengers on an overnight Thomas Cook flight from Cancun to Manchester woke to the news the 179-year-old travel company had gone under, a flight attendant took to the in-flight PA system to deliver a heartbreaking message as the plane made its last ever trip to the UK.

The gut wrenching moment was recorded by a passenger.

Visibly emotional, the flight attendant began the announcement by apologising for the delay in boarding the aircraft in Cancun.

“As some of you may be aware, you may have switched your phones on this morning …” he told passengers, before becoming too overwhelmed with emotion as he found it hard to continue.

“Come on, come on!” called out passengers, as they encouraged him to keep going.

The flight attendant took a moment before saying: “I’d just like to take this opportunity to thank all the crew on board for operating in such a professional manner, all the way back to the UK, getting you all back here safe and sound.”

“We do have many friends, colleagues, throughout the business today and we’re sure you’ll appreciate…

“We’d just like to say thank you to those customers who’ve flown with us for many years, those customers who’ve flown with us for the first time. We do hope you’ve enjoyed your flight with Thomas Cook, and you’ve been the last people to be on this aircraft. So please have a safe journey onwards. Thank you.”

After a huge round of applause from all those present, the pilot then made an announcement of his own on the PA system, as he echoed the flight attendant’s sentiments.

He said his colleagues at Thomas Cook had been “fantastic people to work with”.

“It’s been a pleasure for 25 years now, for me,” he said. “Thank you very much, crew.”

The flight from Cancun to Manchester was one of the final flights for Thomas Cook, which announced that it was going into compulsory liquidation after failing to secure an extra $368 million demanded by its lenders over the weekend.
