Both these twins needed a liver – only one got a transplant in time

Twin brothers Devin and Nick are facing dramatically different paths after only one received a lifesaving liver from a transplant list.

The identical twin brothers, 18, who are from Slidell, Texas, were both diagnosed last year with stage 4 cirrhosis of the liver caused by a genetic mutation.

Devin Coats is preparing himself for a new organ and a future without his brother, Nick, whose health has deteriorated to a point that a new liver can no longer save him.

“Nick’s now in the dying stage,” their mother, Margi Coats, told station KHOU.

“Nick’s 18 years old, he’s a senior in high school. And that was his big dream when his doctor asked what he wanted in life, he wanted to graduate. I see it’s not going to happen now.”

Both brothers are struggling to accept the future.

“[Devin’s] trying to heal through this too,” the mum said. “He’s got his life and yet his brother doesn’t. It’s been very hard for both of them.”

Margi has created a GoFundMe page for their medical bills since the family does not have life insurance.

“Thank you all for following along on our journey of trials, truth and triumph,” the mum wrote. “We are going to stand and fight, and we know God is with us every step of the way.
