Drawings by teen Queen Victoria to go up for auction

A set of 19th century drawings made by a teenage Queen Victoria will be put up for sale at the Old Master, British and European Pictures auction in Roseberys, London next week.

A few of the sketches were made when the royal - who reigned from 1837 until her death in 1901 - was still a princess and just 14 years old.

Dated July 1833, the drawings depict a knight, a woman, and a veiled woman on a horseback.

The fourth drawing was made a year after she ascended the throne, and depicted a woman sitting with a crown and sash, similar to herself, with the inscription: "by Her Majesty."

Charlotte Russell, Head of Sales at the auction house, said: "These slightly early drawings show that maybe she was still learning a lot, that she was still honing her craft."

"She was very curious and keen as an artist," Russell told CNN.

Roseberys set an estimated sale price of £1,500 to £2,500 ($AU2853 to $4755) for the album with the four sketches, as well as works by other artists.

Russel added that the album was likely assembled by Augusta Hayter, daughter-in-law of George Hayter, who was the Queen's court painter and painted her coronation portrait.

The album also features royal ephemera, including an invitation to the coronation of King George IV at Westminster Abbey in 1821.

"I'm interested to see how it performs," Russell said.

Queen Victoria was very passionate about art, receiving her first drawing lesson at just eight years old.

She went on to be tutored by renowned artists like Edwin Landseer, William Leighton Leitch and Franz Xaver Winterhalter.

"She is known to have experimented quite a lot with different subjects," Russel said, adding that Victoria would make "little sketches of costumes of people in the areas" where she travelled.

Images: Roseberys Fine Art Auctioneers & Valuers via CNN/ Shutterstock

Rebecca Loos claims Beckham is "playing the victim" over affair scandal

Rebecca Loos, the woman at the centre of the alleged affair scandal with iconic football legend David Beckham, has recently shared her thoughts on the new Beckham docuseries, which was released on Netflix.

Loos, now 47 and residing in Norway with her husband and two children, expressed her concerns regarding the way the affair was handled in the docuseries, which was produced in collaboration with Beckham's production company.

In the early 2000s, Loos gained notoriety for her claims of a romantic involvement with David Beckham during his time as a football superstar. In the docuseries, the Beckhams primarily discussed the media frenzy that ensued following Loos' revelations in 2003, but skirted around the specifics of the affair itself.

It was during that tumultuous period that Loos had declared her connection with the football player while working as his personal assistant, even suggesting that the Beckhams had been dealing with marital issues before her involvement came to light. At the time, the celebrity couple vehemently denied any wrongdoing and even considered legal action against Loos.

Victoria Beckham, 49, revealed in the docuseries, "It was the most unhappy I have ever been in my entire life," while David Beckham, 48, tearfully stated, "Victoria is everything to me. To see her hurt was incredibly difficult… what we had was worth fighting for."

Loos, however, took issue with David's statement. In a candid interview with the Daily Mail, she expressed her frustration: "The [worst] bit for me is that he says he didn't like seeing his wife suffer. That bothered me. Because he's the one that's caused the suffering. He can say whatever he likes, of course, and I understand he has an image to preserve, but he is portraying himself as the victim and he's making me look like a liar, like I've made up these stories. He is indirectly suggesting that I'm the one who has made Victoria suffer."

Loos also argued that the docuseries had thrust the affair back into the spotlight, an issue that many had forgotten about since the news first broke 20 years ago, thereby further impacting her reputation. She emphasised, "Yes, the stories were horrible, but they're true. He talks in the documentary about this ultimately being his private life, shutting it down. I think it's one thing to keep your private life to yourself. It's another thing to mislead the public."

She suggested that David could have chosen to acknowledge that it was not one of his proudest moments or characterised it as a challenging period and moved on from the subject. However, she felt that he continued to phrase his statements in a way that indirectly shifted the blame onto her.

"If you don't want to take responsibility for things because of your family and your children, that's absolutely fine," Loos commented, "But he specifically made it look like… my fault, that he had nothing to do with this."

Loos, after the 2003 allegations, embarked on a path as a media personality, participating in various English and Dutch TV shows. In 2008, while filming the Dutch TV show 71 Graden Noord, she crossed paths with her future husband, Norwegian doctor Sven Christjar Skaiaa. After becoming pregnant, the couple decided to relocate to Norway in 2009. Today, she works as a yoga teacher and a massage therapist in Norway while raising her two sons and only occasionally making media appearances.

Images: Instagram

David and Victoria Beckham open up about alleged affair

David and Victoria Beckham have chosen to open up about the "unhappiest" period of their lives, in their highly-anticipated Netflix documentary.

The power couple candidly spoke about David's alleged affair in 2003, where he was accused of cheating with his former personal assistant Rebecca Loos after they were spotted leaving a night club in Spain.

The rumours spread just after David was transferred from the Manchester United club to Real Madrid .

David called the claims “ludicrous” at the time, and now his wife Victoria has also shared her heartache during that time, describing it as the "unhappiest in her life".

Ahead of the release of the four-part documentary series, director Fisher Stevens revealed how "unpleasant" it was for him to ask the couple such personal questions.

"It wasn't pleasant, but we got into it," he said.

"For me, I approached it as, "How did your marriage stay together?" and you'll see how he responds," he added.

Producer John Battsek also told The Sunday Times that the couple "signed up” to a nothing off-limits contract, and were happy to discuss tougher subjects.

“There was no, “You will not ask that or do that,’" he said

"Fisher and I thought that might be the case, but we were clear from the start that we would only do this if we could go in any direction we wanted. And we did," he added.

Aside from the alleged affair, the couple also opened up about their first date and are clearly still smitten with each other.

“The fact I went to the games really was to - some might say I stalked him, I would say see him," she joked about their first meeting at a charity football match in 1997.

She also added that she was immediately attracted to the football star when she spotted him chatting with his parents before the game.

“When I saw him in the footballers’ lounge, all the other footballers were at the bar, and he was standing and talking to his parents, and I’m very close to my family, and I loved that side to him.”

David's recollection of their first meeting was a bit more simple: “I just fancied her”.

The couple have been married since 1999 and have four kids together - sons Brooklyn, 24, Romeo, 21, Cruz, 18, and a daughter Harper, 12.

Image: Kevin Winter/Getty Images

“Once-in-a-lifetime find”: Man discovers gold nugget worth six figures

A man from Victoria has struck gold armed with his budget metal detector.

The man, who wishes to not be named, discovered a 4.6kg rock in Victoria’s “Golden Triangle” which stretches between Ballarat, Bendigo and up to St Arnaud.

Unsure of whether it was worth anything, he brought the rock to Lucky Strike Gold in Geelong for evaluation where Gold trader Darren Kamp discovered it contained a staggering 2.6kg of gold worth $240k.

“He said, ‘Oh, do you think there’s $10,000 worth in it?’, and as soon as it hit my hand I looked at him and said: ‘Try a $100,000’,” Kamp told 9News.

"And he said, 'Oh wow, the wife's going to be happy with that," said Kamp.

Funnily enough, the man had only brought in half of the rock and left the other half “at home”.

“It’s a once-in-a-lifetime find,” said Kamp.

Small nuggets of gold are worth up to $1000, but the value of gold has soared due to inflation.

“You’ll hear the term, ‘if it’s got your name on it, you’ll find it’,” Kamp said.

“You just need some luck and persistence. It’s like a Tattslotto ticket, you’re never going to win it unless you’ve got a ticket,” he added.

The gold nuggets from this region were famous for their quantity, size and purity, and were mostly found in streams or river beds.

Image: Nine News

More than anything in this world. Our family will never be the same. Life will never be the same."

"Each and every little thing makes me think of you. From the sun rays, to the sunset. You taught us to see the beauty in the simple things. You were our bright light. Our sunshine. And that will never change. You were perfect in every way. The best person I knew. The most beautiful girl, inside and out."

Lee was born and raised in Hawaii, where she was part of a family with a strong MMA pedigree.

Both of Victoria's siblings hold championship MMA titles from around the world, with Victoria following in their footsteps and donning the stage name The Prodigy.

ONE, the largest MMA promoter in Asia, paid tribute to Victoria and her family's devastating loss, as chairman Chatri Sityodtong recalled the first time he met the aspiring athlete.

“I first met Victoria when she was 11 years old,” he wrote in a Facebook post. “I watched her blossom over the years as a martial artist and a human being. I always remember thinking how wise, thoughtful, and selfless she was beyond her years."

"Of course, she was an extraordinary martial arts prodigy even back then, but I could see that she was so much more than that. Victoria had the purest heart of gold and a brilliant mind. She looked after others before herself. She wanted to use her life to help the world. I will always remember Victoria for the beautiful and precious soul that she was.”

"The injuries are horrific": Rollercoaster victim identified

The victim of a shocking roller coast accident has been identified as Melbourne based woman Shylah Rodden.

Ms Rodden, aged 26, remains in intensive care after sustaining horrific injuries in the accident, which remains under investigation.

Her father, Alan Ridden, says there is great mystery surrounding the situation. On Monday, police claimed Shylah was struck by the ride at the Royal Melbourne Show while trying to retrieve her mobile phone from the tracks, however eye witnesses claim she had been on the ride.

Horrified audience members watched on as the chaos unfolded, with paramedics treating Shylah for serious injuries before she was taken to hospital. Her father suggests these injuries are life-changing.

“Obviously I can't talk to my daughter. She's going to be in a coma for quite a while,” Mr Rodden told Daily Mail Australia.

“The injuries are horrific. Horrific. She's brain damaged. It's pelvic, her arms, legs, back, neck - there's hardly a thing that's not broken. I just can't work out how the hell so much damage has been done. Even the doctors have said they haven't seen anything as bad as this for a long time.”

One witness, who had been positioned next to the ride, claimed police assertions the woman had been retrieving a phone were not accurate.

"I did not see her walking or climbing on the tracks at all, we saw her flying from the ride, where she landed and how she landed is not consistent with being hit," a woman claimed.

"Not from what we witnessed. We were standing right next to the ride when it happened."

The witness had taken her young son on the ride shortly before the accident.

"We saw her fall from the ride, (heard) the scream and the crack of her hitting the ground. My husband was one of the first on the scene. We were standing right next to it when it happened ," she said.

In a statement issued by Victoria Police, investigators claimed the woman may have walked onto the track to try and retrieve a dropped phone.

Speaking to ABC Mornings host Virginia Trioli on Monday, Show CEO Brad Jenkins refused to say whether there was a fence around the ride or how high that fence was.

The incident remains under investigation and anyone who witnessed it are urged to call crime stoppers.

Image: Facebook

Solemnity and celebration: how political cartoonists have handled the death of a monarch, from Victoria to Elizabeth II

It sounds very familiar – a well-respected monarch dies, and a radical, left-leaning, Antipodean cartoonist struggles to find the right tone to commemorate the event.

He is torn between his distaste for what he sees as the archaic, pre-modern institution of monarchy, and the undoubted personal quality of the late incumbent.

More used to poking fun at the great and good, or attacking governments for their weak-willed or wrong-headed policies, changing tone to reverence and respect is difficult.

But in the end, he manages to strike a very good balance and produce a memorable cartoon.

The well-respected monarch was George VI; the radical, left-leaning, Antipodean cartoonist was David Low; and the year was 1952. With From One Man to Another, Low not only conveyed his own respects, man-to-man, but imagined also the British workman, his hat in his hand and sleeves rolled-up, casting a humble bunch of flowers towards a mighty tombstone labelled “The Gentlest of the Georges”.

This was an expression of democratic – even socialist – sensibility, in an age when monarchy seemed, to many, to be increasingly out-of-step with the advance of modernity and the inexorable march of post-war history.

Low was compelled to look back, not forward, conscious he had an historic role to fulfil in commemorating the passing of the king who had embodied so much of the stolid, British pluck and humility during the second world war.

He reflected in his 1956 autobiography that he hated the old-fashioned, “The Nation Mourns”-style of Victorian cartoon, but it was to that set of images and traditions that he turned.

A long lineage

Cartoonists have had to do something similar in 2022, with the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

In the United Kingdom, the likes of Peter Brookes, Ben Jennings and Christian Adams have all been conscious of the need for solemnity, as well as celebration.

#QueenElizabeth #QueenElizabethII #queen #Queen Elizabeth II #Rest In Peace @EveningStandard #cartoon pic.twitter.com/bzEcwRlaEb

— Christian Adams (@Adamstoon1) September 8, 2022

Across the world, cartoonists have had to struggle with much the same thing, and some favoured themes are already apparent: Elizabeth reunited with her husband, the Duke of Edinburgh, or troops of sad corgis; So too is the very idea that a cartoonist should commemorate the event – something unthinkable when William IV died in 1837, or so much so when George IV died in 1830 that a well-known cartoonist never published his draft sketch.

The sheer immensity of the loss of Victoria called for some pretty special treatment, at a time when cartooning was a lot more formal and respectable than it is today.

It preoccupied several days’ work for Linley Sambourne, chief cartoonist of London’s Punch (for a while, a magazine that was almost as much a British institution as the monarchy).

Requiescat was huge: a double-page spread in sombre black-and-white, depicting a gaggle of goddesses in mourning for their lost monarch.

Allegorical female figures representing countries were all the rage in Victorian and Edwardian cartooning (something David Low also hated and thought was “moth-eaten” by the time he was at his peak).

England, Scotland, Wales, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and India were all included by Sambourne.

Just one goddess was enough for his junior colleague, Bernard Partridge, who imagined Clio – History herself – adding the name of Victoria to the roll of great monarchs.

It was the same when Victoria’s son and heir, Edward VII, died in May, 1910.

Bernard Partridge went with just two figures, rather than a whole host, imagining a weeping Britannia seated before the empty Coronation Chair, an angel of peace reaching out to touch her shoulder.

This was designed to express “an empire’s grief” in terms even more explicit than Sambourne had done with Victoria, but the imagery was very British; even domestic.

Minus the caption, it could almost be recycled in 2022 - crucially, the monarch does not actually appear. So too, Partridge’s offering in January 1936, when George V died (apparently by the hand of his doctor).

Britannia tolling a bell from a medieval bell-tower, with a fog-laden London skyline in the background. Clear the fog, add a Gherkin and a Shard, and the effect would be much the same.

While David Low struggled against the Victorian style of memorial cartoon, it is still very much with us. As so often, cartoons can encapsulate a whole host of feelings that mere words can’t express.

This article originally appeared on The Conversation.

Queen's letter for Sydney that can't be opened until 2085

Sitting inside a locked, glass case, within the dome of Sydney’s Queen Victoria Building, is a letter from Queen Elizabeth II that can’t be opened until the year 2085.

The letter was written by the monarch in November 1986 and has become the subject of conversation once again following the news of Her Majesty’s passing last week.

Addressed to the Lord Mayor of Sydney, the Queen requested that her message be shared with the people of the city in 2085.

“On a suitable day to be selected by you in the year 2085 AD, would you please open this envelope and convey to the citizens of Sydney my message to them,” the Queen wrote on the outside of the letter, signing it simply as, “Elizabeth R”.

The letter in question will remain sealed until 2085. Image: Creative Commons

She wrote the letter after the restoration of the Queen Victoria Building in the 1980s, which was saved from demolition in the late 1950s by “ardent public campaigning” from Sydneysiders.

According to 7news.com.au,it is unknown what the Queen wrote in the letter, even among her personal staff.

In 2012, The Sydney Morning Herald reported that the letter came to be in the building when the Queen visited, with then-centre manager Natalie Douglas telling the outlet that the monarch put the letter inside a time capsule and buried it in the central dome.

“Nobody knows what it says,” Ms Douglas said.

It seems that mystery will continue to surround the letter until its fateful opening many decades from now.

Image: Getty Images

Why this 100-year-old woman was arrested

A 100-year-old woman was arrested after local police officers found out that it was on her bucket list.

Jean Bicketon was at Narracan Gardens Residential Aged Care in Victoria when three constables arrived in a police car with their lights flashing and siren blaring to arrest her.

The former WWII nurse and her fellow aged care residents were spoken to, to assure them that no one was in fact in trouble.

Ms Bicketon was then arrested and officers gently placed handcuffs on her, declaring her ‘officially’ under arrest. She did not resist.

Victoria Police shared the incredible moment to Facebook, showing a happy Ms Bicketon as she was arrested.

“Now these kinda arrests, we’re happy to make,” their post read.

“For many, getting through life without being arrested is a pretty good run. An obvious one we would like to think.

“But for ex-nurse Jean Bicketon - who recently celebrated her 100th birthday, a good run in and of itself - getting arrested was on her bucket list.

“So, when we heard of Jean’s wishes, our team at Moe station were ready to step in and help check it off.

“While celebrating her milestone at Narracan Gardens Residential Aged Care, three young constables whirled in, lights and sirens, to make sure Jean’s birthday wishes were met.

“According to Jean it was one of the best celebrations, and we’re glad we could help grant the experience. Wishing Jean a wonderful 100th birthday!

“Thanks to everyone that made this possible.”

Ms Bicketon said it was an exciting experience and was happy that police accommodated her wish.

“I've never been arrested in my life,” she told Daily Mail Australia.

“I said to them I've never been drunk and I've never been arrested, never lost my driving licence and never had an infringement.”

Images: Facebook

“People are going to die”: Over 1000 uncared for after council aged care services end

More than 1000 elderly residents on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula have been left without care after the local council stopped providing care services and made more than 110 staff redundant.

In July, private aged care service providers took over the care of more than 3500 residents who had previously been cared for by the council, with 2063 people transferred to Mecwacare and 1554 to Bolton Clarke, per WA Today.

Aimee Bonfield, a spokeswoman for Bolton Clarke, said “essential services” were being provided for 300 residents, with services starting or scheduled for another 200.

“All remaining clients have been contacted and we remain in touch on a regular basis to update on progress and to address any immediate needs,” she said.

“Bolton Clarke has a strong track record of understanding local needs and supporting wellbeing and independence for older people on the Mornington Peninsula.”

But, at least 1000 residents have been left without care, including Barbara Rimington, who has a fused back from spinal surgery and has undergone surgery for lung cancer and was receiving assistance with cleaning from the council.

Since Bolton Clarke took over on July 1, the 77-year-old said she hasn’t received any care and is “one of the luckier ones” because she is still relatively independent.

“The council said they are monitoring,” she said. “Pig’s arse they are. Nobody has contacted me to see if I am still alive.”

Rimington said she was worried for others who needed help with shopping, since there are limited delivery options available on the peninsula.

“Are any of these people eating?” she said. “People are going to die. Some people are totally isolated. It’s an indictment on the whole of society.”

89-year-old Michael Nolan said he and his wife, 85, were left in the lurch by Mecawacare and haven’t received care for more than a month.

The council used to provide assistance to Nolan once a fortnight, helping with cleaning and tasks around the home, such as checking smoke alarms, changing light bulbs, and changing bed sheets.

“[Mecwacare] has been on the job since July 1 and nothing is happening,” he said.

“We have to try and do the cleaning ourselves and we tackle it a little bit at a time, but it takes us days and days to do because I can’t bend down, otherwise I fall over.

“Mecwacare has had months and months to prepare for this.

“It is typical of the former federal government, they want to give everything over to private enterprise.”

Anthony Marsh, the mayor of Mornington Peninsula, said the council decided to “transition” away from using its own staff to prepare for the federal government’s open-market system, and that the council had no say in the providers that would replace them.

“The peninsula had no provider other than council delivering these services and we needed to ensure our residents had choice and the advantage of a competitive market environment,” he said.

“We did not get a say in the appointment of new providers; that was done by the federal government.”

Marsh said the council was assured by both providers and the government that essential services would continue from July 1, and that an offer to keep some staff on “to help with the transition” was turned down.

“The welfare of our older residents is a major priority for council, and we will continue to advocate to the federal government to make sure older people receive the support they need to remain independent and involved in the community,” he said.

A government spokesman said the government was “continually reviewing” the transition and selection process for councils that chose to exit the Commonwealth home support program and was aware of the situation on Mornington Peninsula.

“The department is aware of the transition of clients from Mornington Peninsula Shire council to Mecwacare and Bolton Clarke and is actively working with My Aged Care and the providers on outstanding transition issues,” he said.

Image: Getty Images

“I tried to protect her”: Victoria and David Beckham recount terrifying stalking incident

David and Victoria Beckham have opened up about their ordeal with a stalker who has been charged with harassing the former athlete.

The Beckhams are being represented by their lawyers in a Westminster Magistrate Court where 58-year-old Sharon Bell is facing stalking charges.

Bell believed she was in a relationship with Beckham and, after trying to contact him through a series of letters, claimed he and his wife were conspiring to “steal her eggs from inside her body”, as reported by The Daily Mail.

One of the letters Bell sent to the football star read: “I do love you and have done so since we were children.”

In a statement read to the court, the father of four said he doesn’t have a relationship with Bell and had never seen her before.

“I felt like the language in the letters was escalating and becoming more emotional and threatening towards me and my family and this worried me,” he said in his statement, addressing the impact the letters had on him.

The court also heard of a terrifying event involving the couple’s youngest child, 11-year-old Harper.

Bell reportedly appeared at Harper’s school in an attempt to abduct her.

“I’m Harper’s mother. I’m here to pick her up,” she reportedly told the school.

After police were called to the school, Bell was taken away.

A statement from Victoria was also read out in court by prosecutor Arizuna Asante, detailing the fashion designer’s concern for her young daughter following the incident.

“Due to the volume of attention [my husband and I receive from fans], we are rarely informed of the nature of communications from fans,” her statement read.

“I tried to protect her and I am worried about her.

“I am very concerned and anxious about Harper going to the park or being taken on school trips.”

Prosecutor Asante added: “She is now scared to go out and it has made things harder for her.

“She is worried, especially when Harper goes on school trips.”

Bell, who is currently detained under the Mental Health Act, was deemed a risk to the couple's children because she was “obsessed with the family” by District Judge Michael Snow.

Judge Snow charged Bell with stalking, though she will not face a criminal trial because of her mental health.

Image: Getty Images
