Hall of Fame fighter hospitalised after saving elderly parents from fire

Details of the fire initially emerged through local news outlets, shrouded in anonymity. “A special girl”: Orphaned crash victim receives bravery award for saving baby brothers

<p>Synthia Rose Day, a five-year-old girl from Western Australia, has received a Children of Courage award for her actions in the devastating crash that orphaned herself and her two younger brothers. </p> <p>Synthia was in the car with her mother Cyndi Braddock, Cyndi’s partner Jake Day, and her two brothers when their Land Rover left the road in Wheatbelt and flipped a handful of kilometres short of their home. Jake was 28, and Cyndi only 25. </p> <p>In the backseat with her little brothers, Synthia survived the accident, but the trio were not found for 55 hours in the wake of the tragedy despite a frantic search by both their loved ones and the local authorities. </p> <p>While the situation the children found themselves in was nothing short of devastating, Synthia stepped up, and took action to make sure her brothers got out of there okay. </p> <p>"She took the seatbelt off the one-year-old Charles,” the childrens’ uncle, Al Slatter, informed <em>9News</em>, “[she] got him out of the seat and then got her foot stuck so she couldn't move … and what she did for Bevan was amazing."</p> <p>The children, freed from the vehicle and watched over by young Synthia, were eventually found on the roadside. </p> <p>For her actions that day, Synthia has been presented with a Children of Courage award, and was nominated by her teacher, Tony Smeed.</p> <p>“She's always been a caring and compassionate person,” Smeed said of the decision to put Synthia forward for the award, “and obviously the bravery she showed in 50 hours of heat to keep her brothers alive was just amazing.”</p> <p>“The award will mean that much to her,” their uncle, Al Slatter added, “and I even had a tear in my eye when they read it out to me, because she’s a special girl.”</p> <p>Synthia’s beloved brothers - two-year-old Bevan and one-year-old Charles - were in attendance to support their hero big sister, and the family had to travel more than three hours from their home in Kondinin to Perth to attend the ceremony. </p> <p>Slatter also opened up to <em>9News </em>about Synthia’s attitude since the tragedy, as the children adjust to their lives in their grandparents’ care, saying, “Charles, she loves him, but Bevan, wherever he goes - if he’s out riding his pushbike out the front - she’s got to be out there checking on him, making sure he’s not too far from Nanny.”</p> <p>Synthia was one of 38 exceptional children across Western Australia to be recognised for demonstrating resilience, determination, and positivity while living with trauma and various health challenges. </p> <p><em>Images: 9News</em></p>

Six inches from death: New biography reveals Prince Harry’s bravery while serving in Afghanistan

<p>In 2007, Prince Harry was deployed to southern Afghanistan with the Household Cavalry and now, a new biography has detailed his time in the war-torn Hemland Province and his close brushes with death.</p> <p>Harry was based in the Gamsir area, close to the Pakistani border, which was, according to his commanding officer Major Mark Millford “about as dangerous as it can get”.</p> <p>Harry was employed as a forward air controller, which involved studying “Taliban TV”, a live feed from cameras mounted on aircraft and unmanned drones, reported the <a href="http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-5513595/New-biography-reveals-bravery-Prince-Harry.html" target="_blank"><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Daily Mail.</span></strong></a></p> <p>Carefully analysing the images before him, Harry would search for troop movements or signs of body heat that could reveal the position of the Taliban.</p> <p>The job involved hours of consulting detailed “pattern of life” studies to identify schools, mosques and marketplaces with innocent civilians to ensure they were not targeted.</p> <p>For the first time in his life, Harry found that he could be unrecognised as a member of the royal family which allowed him to talk with the village elders and learn about local life.</p> <p>However, his anonymity meant he was in just as much danger as all his other comrades.</p> <p>Captain Dickon Leigh-Wood, who knew Harry since their time together at Ludgrove prep school and who had trained with him at Combermere Barracks, explained the time Harry and his unit “drove over” an unexploded landmine.</p> <p>“One of the vehicles in the column suddenly noticed something flick underneath the tank in front and everyone was ordered to stop,” Captain Leigh-Wood said.</p> <p>“You automatically think, ‘This is gonna go off. This is it’.</p> <p>“The previous vehicles, including Harry’s, had missed the pressure plate of an IED by about six inches. If any of us had gone over it, it would have been game over.”</p> <p>The captain said that Harry slept in trenches with up to four people in sleeping bags, with temperatures as low as -26C at night.</p> <p>“I never once heard him complain.”</p> <p>“He often went into the villages with the interpreter to chat to locals, just to find out what was going on, drink some chai, and experience their life. “He was never recognised and I think he really cherished that. These people had no TV. </p> <p>“I don’t think they’d have recognised the Queen if she’d have been there. He was also brilliant at keeping everyone’s spirits up. </p> <p>“We had a lot of Fijians in our troop. </p> <p>“They love playing touch rugby and Harry’s obsessed with it, so he would often instigate a game right there in the middle of the desert with a ball he kept in the tank.”</p> <p><em>Image credit: Air Force Space Command </em></p>

6-year-old girl tries to stop axe-wielding robber

<p>This is the heart-stopping a fearless young girl tries to stop an axe-wielding robber attacking an employee at her family’s store.</p> <p>CCTV footage captured six-year-old Sarah Patel at her parents’ electrical shop in Auckland, New Zealand, running towards a masked robber as he threatens an employee with an axe.</p> <p>The video shows the masked intruders attacking other employees, but it is one scene that has captured the world – the moment a fearless Sarah runs towards an attacker, who is standing over a store employee with an axe, and pulls his leg in an attempt to stop him. She’s pushed away and her grandfather quickly picks her up to take her to safety.</p> <p>Sarah says she was "trying to save" the 19-year-old employee Jordan Byrt, and that she wasn't scared of the "bad guy".</p> <p>Thankfully, Sarah wasn’t hurt by the incident, but is a bit shaken up by the whole ordeal.</p> <p>Her dad Suhail Patel, told the New Zealand Herald: "The whole incident is not only disturbing mentally it's also too much disturbance in life. She couldn't sleep last night, she has got a bit of nausea and anxiety."</p> <p>“Last night she was very upset. Was in shock. We’ve been trying to say to her ‘You’re the bravest girl’, that sort of thing,” he said.</p> <p>The suspects escaped by car but were caught by West Auckland police after a car chase. Woman and her dog heroically rescued from floodwaters
